    You have made this very simple. I wish this video was around years ago when I was starting to make maps. Now after many years of inactivity I am returning to the Source Engine for CS:GO, this is not only a nice tutorial but a very nice refresher. Any chance you'll go into details on various properties you can make in vmt?

    Hey, 3k.
    This tutorial doesn't really help when you want to Release the maps With the custom textures. Only the person who owns the textures will see them.
    You need to do a follow up tutorial on porting maps to steam With the textures embedded within the maps files, so that other people who download the maps get to see the textures as well!
    This comment is for 3k, as many will say to "use pakrat" or "try VIDE" but the wikis dont adequately explain HOW to use them, only what they are. So, a video tutorial may come in handy for those of us who are New to making custom textured maps.

      All you need to do is create a folder called materials in your addon folder, add the textures to the materials folder and then publish it, and when people subscribe to the addon the textures will automatically be placed into their materials folder. There's no need for pakrat.

    At Portal 2, the material directory is not "Portal 2\portal2\materials" (In Hammer it appeares, but ingame it is rendered as a flashing flat white texture)
    The right folder is "Portal 2\platform\materials"
    But anyway, it's working, so thx philip for great tutorial as always :)

    This one time I was looking for a way to bounce all my tracks in Ableton at once. Found a 10 minute tutorial where the guy talked for like 5 minutes about his track and stuff and played his song and whatnot. Finally he gets to the menu where you render the audio, and guess what? The solution is right in the render menu, in a little drop down box. It took him 10 minutes to show something I could have told you in a sentence.

    In VTFEdit, go to Options and make sure that "Auto Create VMT File" is enabled. If it isn't you wont get a vmt file.

    Thanks man. I wanted to edit textures mods I got from steam. But I'm no modder so I didnt know what to do. Kept looking online on how to open vmt files, and some pops up showing what and how to open it. But didnt say clearly WHAT vmt files are. You solve my question 30 seconds in. Really thanks a bunch.

      You now have to manually change this in VTFEdit's options menu. Tick "Auto Create VMT File" or something.

    Jakob, if a texture shows up in hammer but not in the game its probably because its from another game, you could find which game its from, then copy the texture from the game files into a new file within the game you want it to work with

    Actually the easiest way to create a custom texture is to go use a picture on your computer and use it as your spray, then it'll be available in the Hammer Editor, you don't even need the VMF file or VMT file and it can be any resolution you want, I don't know if this was an intended feature or not but it works 100%

    When you have your VTFEdit open, click "Options" and click "Auto Create VMT File". You can also click "Tools" and then "Create VMT File", but if you chose the last you have to do it everytime ;-)

    Hey Philip. You have by far the best Hammer tutorials. In following this one, everything works perfectly but the textures won't appear in game (purple and black squares instead). I have followed all the steps correctly and they show up nicely in Hammer. Any ideas?

    Half-Life 1 uses a different file format for textures. You need wad files which must go to the valve folder if I remember correctly. You need to select those in the worldcraft options.

    Does the texture automatically download for people who use the map? If not how to I make sure they have it?

      I believe how I can help:
      If you want it to download automatically when they go to play the map, I think you should include a .res file.
      But if you're going to pack the materials with the map, do the following:
      You have to download a program called 7-Zip. It's a *free* file manager.
      And then, using 7-Zip, create a new .zip file by right-clicking the desktop or an empty space and selecting '7-Zip < Create *.zip archive' or something similar.
      After doing that, open the .zip file, and then right-click on an empty space _inside_ of the .zip file, and select 'New folder' or 'Create folder'. Make 2 of them, with one being 'maps', and the second one being 'materials'.
      Now, minimize 7-Zip, and open the folder where your map is located. Copy the .bsp file into the folder 'maps', located in your .zip file, and wait for the map file to 'inject' itself.
      After doing that, go to your 'materials' folder (not in 7-Zip), and copy the materials into the 'materials' folder in your .zip file.
      NOTE: In 7-Zip, you have to open a folder inside the .zip file, and *then* put the file in there.
      I hope it sums it up!

    If Your VTF File Doesn't come With A VMT File when Saving, Open VTFEdit Go To Options Then Check "Auto Create VMT File"
    This Should Fix It :)

    If you want custom textures/sounds etc to be included in the bsp file so people dont have to download them seperately. You need pakrat (google it) after you put your map together, run pakrat on it, it creates a new bsp file for the map, rename the old one. Test the new bsp file to see that it works. Pakrat is super easy to use.

    The custom texturs to me is just blank it still sees the file but when I replace it , it doesn't work

    Well, for private reasons, I do need them. I figured it this morning, I just went into Tools>Convert Folder, thanks for the help though. I hope people can see my comment if they're having the same problem.

    If in vtf edit you save it to the final location you can have it so it automatically has the correct directory in the vmt

    If the VTFedit wont make a VMT file go into options and there should be a cross-off sign saying "auto create VMT-file" and then save as.
    and then it should create a VMT file

    You could go to Tools->Create VMT, and browse the "Base Texture 1" to your file, but move it to your Materials folder first. Then you don't have to edit it.

    Btw, I can convert more files into .VTF at once, or I have to manually convert them one by one, since I wanna convert 900+ .BMP format materials into .VTF (I resized them to 256x256 already.)

    For those who are still having issues with the VMT file, you can toggle 'Auto Create VMT file' by hitting the options button. It's the first thing that will appear in your screen.

    For the dummies out there, keep in mind that the filepaths in the description may not be the same as yours. If you installed on the hard drive, it could be C:\Program files or C:\Program files (x86)

    Philip, how do you put in a texture with transparency? Like, let's say I have a logo .PNG that I want in the game. VTFEdit screws it up completely.

    Its random PC launguage symbols you know if like you try to type a different language in like say CoD it will give out random gibberish.
    And it doesnt say just VMT file or VTF file it says Valve Material/Texture File.

    my texture was made in paint.net and it has transparency on it
    i made everything you showed but the transparent part is white for me

    there are a lot another videos that shows you how to do with gm but hl2 MUST be in sdk (if you installed portal1/hl2/css/...(source games) first and THEN sdk)

    I'm trying to make a remake of my CS:Source map, but I can't seem to activate the custom textures for CS:GO in hammer editor. I took the vtf and vmt files from the old map, put it into ...steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\csgo\materials\mytextures (vmt files say folder is: mytextures
    ame) - now when I open Hammer editor the textures are missing even though I've selected the folder in the options for materials. What am I missing here?

    Still shows the missing texture ;-; welp plz
