Worth noting that Tolkien kept changing aspects of Galadriel's backstory, especially: where Celeborn came from, how and why Galadriel departed from Valinor, when she left Beleriand, and whether or not she was free to return to Valinor. So her depiction in LotR has a different background compared to what's in the Silmarillion, and later fragments change it further. So it's a bit misleading to speak of her backstory as though it were clearly established (remember that even the Silmarillion was assembled from fragments and published after Tolkien's death).
Glad to hear you note this. It's misleading when people speak of Galadriel's past so resolutely.
I agree with Isaac (hope right spelling) about jumping around the storylines. They could have put the segments of each storyline together and still show each storyline in every episode but one after the other for more cohesion. Thorin II (aka Thorin Oakenshield from the Hobbit) is a descendent of Durin III (king) and his son Durin IV. This show begins at the beginning of the Second Age so ca 3000 years before the Hobbit and LOTR. So more more than 12 generations between the two.
It is fun to note that the opening credits w/ music by Howard Shore is inspired by the Ainulindalë in the Silmarillion (which the show does not have the rights to). Tolkien's creation myth where the Valor use music to create the world and Melkor (later called Morgoth) strikes the discordant notes.
I'm enjoying Galadriel's characterization so far, although I do agree about the snow troll. My understanding is that in the Unfinished Tales (which the show also does not have the rights to), it is stated that Galadriel elects to stay in Middle-Earth at the end of the 1st age because she saw it as her duty to do so until Sauron is conquered. And in her youngish age, which I assume is the case so far, I see her as strong-minded, prideful, and a little arrogant. And I, and I believe the show, does view the latter ones as character flaws.
I also feel the show is doing a good job playing with some familiar Tolkien themes of light/dark and fate (chance meetings: Nori & the Stranger; Galadriel & Halbrand).
