This design falls right in between the X1/9 and the Esprit. A little more exotic than the Fiat, not quite as low and wide as the Esprit. A gorgeous design in any case.

The Fiat is more exotic than the Lancia because it has a proper targa top and a usable boot, the spare tyre is vertical inside the centre bulkhead, and the Lancia uses X1/9 suspension and running gear not the other way round.
Apparently the engine mounts on the Lancia are different because the X1/9 used different blocks.

I think this car served as inspiration for the creators of the De Lorean Dmc 12, same lines, same front bumper, same tail lights, but smaller.

Owned one of these back in the day, a 1977 model purchased in 1982. Looks great, the looks make such big promises. Noisy inside due to the proximity of the engine. Not a particularly enjoyable car to drive. It all felt very average, and the brakes had a tendency to be rather frightening. Cars such as the Peugeot 205 GTI, which came out around 1984 wiped the face of cars like the Monte Carlo. I've owned plenty of cars. I generally enjoy a car for what it is, whether it's an old, cheap , and rusty runabout..., or something very expensive. But not the Lancia Monte Carlo. I didn't own it for long, and certainly didn't miss it after I sold it.
Some people say... "Well, it was just a Fiat really.......". Fair enough. But 9 or 10 years previously, someone gave me a 30 mile lift through Wiltshire countryside.. in a Fiat 124 Special T saloon ( The shape that later became a Lada ). That Special T was an absolute zinger of a car. Tremendous. How did the Monte Carlo happen ?

The Montecarlo was like many other cars of the time (flawed) and it definitely should have had a 3.0 engine, however the oil crisis meant that the 2.0 was used.
Most owners today will have uprated the engine, or replaced it with a 3.0 if they are looking for more performance.
Even with the stock engine, the brakes needed to be revised as they were prone to locking up in the wet.
Comparing it to a Peugeot 205 GTI is missing the point (for example, the Suburu Impreza WRX came out around 1994 and would 'wipe the face' of a 205 GTI)
A better comparison would be with its 'peers' at that time such as the (much cheaper) Triumph TR7 or the Jensen Healey.
A low volume, mid-engine car such as the Montecarlo is a completely different beast to a mass produced hot hatch or a performance version of a 4-door saloon.

The Lancia Montecarlo promised much more than it could ever deliver. If Lancia had put a better and more powerful engine in it, given it brakes that actually worked then the car could have been a real gem. But they didn't. With the benefit of hindsight they should have put the Thema V6 or their Ferrari engined 8:32 into it, but alas the Monte was long dead before these came on the scene. Some owners have put the Alfa 3.0 V6 into their Montes which perhaps gives the car the power it should always have had and sound of a half decent engine.

'The original 1969 design called for a 3.0-litre V6 engine but the oil crisis of the mid-1970s saw that enticing power unit replaced by a smaller 2.0-litre inline four for what was now, the Lancia Beta Montecarlo'.
