- I'm upgrading my Coffman's Shorty exhaust with their new Thunder model. I installed and reviewed a previous version of the Thunder, but this latest version has a straight-back profile instead of being angled slightly upward like before.

This new version leaves plenty of room for a taller/deeper pannier on the right side of the bike so owners can ride with symmetrical bags on their Rebels. As always, the fit and finish of this Coffman's slip-on exhaust is top-notch... they make amazing products.
The removable baffle in Coffman's new exhausts doesn't need to be rebuilt like previous versions. The O-ring in my Shorty exhaust was worn out and needed to be refreshed, so Wyatt Coffman sent me two rebuild kits for my older exhausts. Wyatt asked me if I'd like to try the newest Thunder exhaust that didn't need to be rebuilt, so I said, "ABSOLUTELY!"

I've had this one mine for almost a year and a half... its been great. I did it to fit under some large hard saddle bags I put on that wouldn't fit with the stock muffler.

I need to run 60-65mph all day while getting the absolute best mpg possable as my bant roll is as small as they come. What bike/scoot do you suggest??? Please help. Howdy, Jonathon! You didn't mention your height or inseam, which can majorly affect motorcycle/scooter selection. Your geography can also make considerable differences in how well you can sustain speed, particularly with small-displacement scooters (lots of hills or headwinds mandate larger engine output to maintain speed uphill). If you need to maintain a "comfortable" 60-65 mph consistently and efficiently, then you should be shopping for the middleweight class of motorcycles and scooters. You could look at the 250-300 class machines, but their efficiency drops when you push them harder at freeway speeds and higher riding weights.
If you want a motorcycle, then the 500-750cc range is your best fit, considering your riding weight. The Honda CB500 series of bikes (CB500F/X and CBR500R) are amazing all-purpose motorcycles that excel at commuting and crushing tons of miles for not much $$$. The Honda NC750X is another great commuter choice with more torque and better ergonomics for larger riders. Any middleweight Hondas will return 55-70 MPG all day, depending on your riding habits and terrain.
There are plenty of other great middleweight options, like the Kawasaki Z400 (naked), Ninja 400 (sporty), Eliminator 450 (cruiser), and Versys 650 (adventure). Suzuki's SV650 and V-Strom 650 are legendary in the middleweight class. Yamaha redefined the middleweight naked class with their MT-07 and its amazing 270° parallel twin. These bikes won't be as efficient as the Hondas (generally speaking), but they still return a respectable 45-60 MPG in most commuting scenarios. The key to shopping for an efficient commuter machine or a frugal tourer is a 2-cylinder engine... either a parallel- or V-twin. The inline 4-cylinder engines are never as efficient due to reciprocating and parasitic losses in the engine (more friction and internal losses) and because I-4's are usually tuned for performance over economy.
If you're more into scooters and their twist-and-go lifestyle, then you'll want to go for a middleweight machine. The only new middleweight scoots in the USA are the Yamaha XMAX 400, Suzuki Burgman 400, and BMW C400GT. You could get by with a Suzuki Burgman 200 (meets the 65 mph requirement), but that won't leave a lot of headroom for passing or hill climbing with a 350-lb rider onboard. Older/used scooters like the Yamaha Majesty 400, Honda SilverWing 600, Suzuki Burgman 650, and others will haul one or two riders down the road at 85+ MPH all day long without breaking a sweat.

Howdy! Yes, the CB500X is still waiting for me in the warehouse. I still need to do the valve inspection, and it's overdue by a couple of thousand miles. I also need to diagnose some driveline noise that happens at low speeds. I suspect the rear wheel bearings are getting crunchy, so I haven't ridden it much in the past year.
I'll tackle the valve adjustment for the CB500X and the CB500F simultaneously because they have identical engines. Both bikes are due for their 20K mile service, so it'll be a doppelganger maintenance party! Cheers! 😉👍

I noticed that everyone goes taller and taller and taller with the windscreens to try and overcome it, but in fact, I think the only way to really solve it is to actually go lower. I’ve got myself a sport screen from WRS. It seems to have done the trick
Question....sorry off topic but I think you've got rid of your Ryker...I've been on the two wheel road for 55 years and now at 72 was thinking HARD of getting the 2024 Ryker Rally....Looking all over the place (but not really good with the internet) JUST where you purchased the driver's floorboards ??...My last three HD's all had floorboards so I'm kinda use to the now...THANKS

Remember that the Ryker doesn't have power-assist steering... it's completely manual (think go-kart steering). It requires a lot of upper body strength and rider input to corner and maintain trajectory on the road. The Spyder trikes have power-assisted rack and pinion steering, so they are much easier to ride and are more comfortable for touring. I hope you find a good fit! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Howdy! The problems with my Rebel 1100 DCT have been very minor. The cruise control issue was caused by the rear brake switch "fluttering" under light to moderate brake pressure (not fully engaged). I adjusted the switch to engage just a bit earlier (about 3/4 turn) so it wouldn't flutter under maintenance pressure while sitting at stop lights.
The stator oil leak issue that plagues both the DCT and the manual version is due to an assembly error (not enough gasket sealer around the cable grommet/gland). The repair was covered under extended warranty on my bike, but some other owners havent' been as fortunate. I hope that Honda decides to do a "silent recall" or persistent TSB on this issue to cover other affected Rebels for at least 5 years, but we'll see if that happens or not.
The idle hang issue that I experienced (several times on camera) couldn't be reproduced by my dealer when they tried to troubleshoot it. I suspect that it is a heat-related issue, because I have only experienced it during the summer months when it's 100°F+ here in Houston. Honda was made aware of the issue, and they advised the dealer to perform the DCT reset/re-learn procedure.
I haven't noticed the problem since that reset, but the weather has been cooler since then. I will be sure to let everyone know if it happens again this summer. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Right now I'm trying to find a dealer with lower "fees" here in FL they are out of control on dealer fees... anywhere from 2 to 4 grand (over tax/tag) probably going to wind up with a used one.

If the OTD price plus my round-trip travel fees at an out-of-state dealer are lower than that of a local dealer, then I'll take a road trip every time. Same... I don't know why Honda allows dealers to rip of their (hondas) customers like that. You would think they would clamp down on them.
So for now, patience is the game. I also teed off my harley dealer when I told him I am through with Harley....

Thanks for the feedback! This video was recorded on my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. I have a Quad Lock phone case, and that was mounted on a Ulanzi MT-16 mini-tripod ( amzn.to/439PPy4 ) with the Quad Lock tripod adapter ( amzn.to/3Ttuqgc ).

@tom9266t Nope! I've been running this way for 12K miles without any problems. The ECU can adjust about 10%, and the catalytic converter is still in the mid-pipe. If the intake was also upgraded to allow more airflow (K&N filter or similar) or if the catalytic converter was removed, then I'm sure it would run too lean and need a remap. 😉👍 --QM

Not a lover of these short exhausts. But this version looks 100% better than what you took off.
Plus points too, that you use the large Honda saddle bag on that side, and it doesn’t intrude.
Question, did you swap the lock clip, on the saddlebag mount ? As you remove up to the front. This be reversed, up to the rear. Having a thick moment. I Have the 500 Rebel, as I have a very short inside leg (27 inches)
So logical upgrade be the 1100. But, I stick with manual.

Howdy, Mark! I'm not a fan or proponent of loud exhausts, but I think the Coffman's Shorty (and now Thunder) suit the Rebel's mood. I have plenty of other quiet bikes and scooters, so it's fun to have a slightly rowdy steed in the stable.
As you probably know, these Honda panniers and mounts are made by SW-Motech. Any of the SLC bags will fit on the Honda pannier mounts. The silver locking "bobbin" needed to be reversed to fit the left bag onto the right mount. All of the screw diameters are identical, so I just swapped the bobbin to the top-rear position. When I swap to other SLC bags with proper left and right brackets, then I just reverse that bobbin to the top-front position again.
The windscreen on my Rebel is the Daytona Blast Barrier from Webike Japan: japan.webike.net/products/24739062.html . It does a decent job of reducing air pressure on my chest, but it's not an ideal touring screen. There is a fair amount of turbulence directed at my helmet (5' 6" tall, 29" inseam). I may eventually replace that screen with a larger "batwing" from Memphis Shades or perhaps the removable screen from MadStad Engineering. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Quasi, thank you so very much for your info. Its not the great news i was hopeing for as when you start hearing things like 100 mpg its ez to get excited. Im 5 foot 8 and a half and the honda xr150l seat is about the tallest seat i can handle with comfort. And the new price being >4k is very apealing. I live in ny state so turane veries. I usualy have no money so this is why i want the best mpg possable. Ive got a bad back that prevents me from working so im limited to what i can make scraping metal. Unfortunately the sport style bike are out due to my back. I had hopes of the adv150 or the xr150l being enouph but sounds like they arnt going to cut it. The mph figure is cause i dont like being "in the way". I dont mind setting my maps app to avoid highways. I will be returning to look at your response several times as you gave me so much help. Thanks again. The reliability of new would be a great pease of mind but my budget dictates that even the adv150 would have to have come used. This is a concern as i dont have great friends to rescue me if i break down once im a couple hundred miles away from home, and im looking to go and get out a long way. Your ausumn quasi, thanks

The Honda ADV150/160 might be a good fit for you if you don't mind being limited to ~65 mph top speed. My buddy, Kevin, has the 2023 ADV150, and he loves it. He is 6' tall and weighs ~300 lbs: th-cam.com/video/uxlqSbNVRHg/w-d-xo.html
The XR150L probably won't work for you because its top speed will be 50-55 mph (best case scenario) with a 350-lb rider onboard. The official weight capacity for the XR150L is 311 lbs, and the ADV160 is 366 lbs.
If you don't mind purchasing a used bike, then a used Honda CB500X or a middleweight scooter will offer more "bang for the buck" and should still be very reliable and economical to operate. I hope you find a good fit and get into riding soon! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
Thank you quazi, i did sub to kevins vids already but he has very few vids up about the adv150. I know he talked about the mpg only being in the 60's when he first got it and was expecting that to improve. However we never got an update about if it did or not. Thanks man, your the best.

The Honda saddlebags are actually made by SW-Motech. They aren't 100% waterproof, but they are very water resistant. I've had a bit of water seep into the bags in heavy rainstorms, but the liners are mostly waterproof. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

What's the main difference between the two exhausts?
The only functional difference between the Shorty (smaller one) and the Thunder (longer one) is in the pipe length and orientation. The muffler section and the removable noise baffles are identical on both of them, and they sound nearly identical.

The Thunder is slightly quieter because of the longer pipe. The perceived sound level at the rider's position also sounds a bit quieter because the outlet is a few inches behind the rider's head (and pointed rearward) instead of being directly below the helmet. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
Fitting the thunder is easier if you unbolt the other hanger on the cat area of the pipe.
What do you mean? Was it helpful in getting the pipe seated all the way to the flange?

Howdy! Yep, this video is current (Feb 27, 2024). I'm kinda sorta back... not out riding yet, but I'm getting back on two wheels this week. I rode the Rebel home from the warehouse on Tuesday evening to get it cleaned up and ready for riding season.
My new SHOEI Neotec 2 helmet arrived on Monday, and my gloves and other stuff showed up today (Wednesday). I'm gathering up all my vlogging gear and transferring it onto the new helmet, and I'll probably make a fresh ride vlog sometime in the next few days... something like a "Catching up with Quasi" vlog. 🤔
It's been over 4 months since I've been on the bikes, so that's the longest hiatus for me across my 45+ year riding career. Wish me luck and no more unscheduled interventions with angry cagers! 😉👍 --QM

What seat is that?
The seat on my Rebel is the Honda "Custom forward" seat: dreamshop.honda.com/s/product/main-st-fwdspl-nh1l/01t6g000007WvyBAAS . The "forward" option is supposed to push the rider about 1" closer to the tank. It's also available in just the "custom" option that doesn't have a forward push to it (slightly flatter and less deeply cut scoop in the seat foam). Color options are black or brown. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I traded an RV for what I thought was a Rebel CMX450, but it turned out to be a CM450 (Hondamatic) instead. Still an awesome swiss watch clockwork bike, but fugly.
Just ordered a new fuel petcock for an 08 Shadow that has a vacuum fuel petcock safety recall on it that was causing me a world of h377 and had me cwrsing at this piece of Shadowsh1t all month.
If you've ever had a bike with a modern vacuum operated fuel petcock on it... they fail and are a piece of crrp. Basically, when the vacuum switch inside the petcock fails, even if your petcock is on, no fuel will flow through to the fuel line, and you end up running your battery down to dead with no crank... because your bike is getting no fuel at all, even with the fuel switched on and even though you're getting spark. And you're like, it's like my bike is getting no fuel at all, there's gas in the tank, what's going on? Yeah...
I diagnosed the problem all the way backwards to the RCRIT-08V141-7306 safety recall on the part.
