  • WELCOME TO NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE!
    Despite that, our first look at North Lincs sees us in a village which has a Doncaster postcode - one of five parishes which do so in North Lincolnshire, the others being Epworth, Haxey, Belton and Wroot. It is situated on the west bank of the River Trent, and 9 miles North of Gainsborough, although there are no direct roads across the Trent to the town.
    The clue though as to how transportation over the Trent used to occur is in the name - a ferry used to operate over the river and the village forms part of the Isle of Axholme. The name is given to the area as once, this was an Island, prior to the area being drained by the Dutchman Cornelius Vermuyden.
    The name is thought to derive from the Old Norse "austr+tun", meaning "east farmstead", a view shared by other sources which outline that it specifically implied the "farmstead east of Haxey". The name is shared by at least two other settlements within the United Kingdom - one of which we’ve already seen - Owston in Doncaster!
    Industry wise in 1885 the village had a rope-walk, a boat-building yard, several corn mills, and was known for the manufacture of sacking and sail cloth. The parish was back then was formed of 5,350 acres. Wheat, barley, potatoes, beans and grass were grown. Notable people from the village include Philippa Foot, philosopher and inventor of the branch of ethics known as "trolleyology".
    There’s a LOT to discuss in this, my opening salvo in a district I know oh so very well. I cannot wait to get stuck right into this one and take you around all 57 parishes. Welcome to OWSTON FERRY.

    OWSTON FERRY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    - My inkling that Mariners House may have been a pub was wayward, so it's good job I asked. It has never been a pub but it has been a drapers and a printers over the years
    - Owston Ferry once had the only outdoor swimming pool in the whole of the Isle of Axholme
    - There used to be a very tiny HSBC bank in the Market Place, the Red Lion pub, Woods Convenience Store and even a small Butchers shop near the White Hart which use to sell a very odd thing called savoury duck which is like pate/hazlet
    - When the ferry was still operational, people from East Ferry used to use it shop here in Owston Ferry
    - The village has some almshouses which are still occupied by single ladies

      I bought the old school in Ferry in 1976 and it had been a garage before we had it. Both sexes attended the school, there was a boys sign on one side and a girls on the other. The original windows were still inside the building when we bought it and we converted it, with planning permission to a house. Very interesting video and as someone pointed out, the mariners was a drapers store owned and run by Mr Bradley, there was a bank and the Red Lion pub. Thank you

    Great work Andy. I lived in the Isle between 1966 and 1987. I'm now on the other side of the planet, but love to be reminded of the wonderful villages, architecture and history.

    Great video - I lived in Owston Ferry for about 10 years on the Trent Bank on South Street in Timaru Cottage (which I briefly saw) - it was nice to see this again and brought back some great memories. There used to be a very tiny HSBC bank in the Market Place, the Red Lion pub, Woods Convenience Store and even a small Butchers shop near the White Hart which use to sell a very odd thing called savoury duck (like pate/hazlet)
    Thank you x

    Years ago I was off to Owston down the trent side and the last long sweeping bend just before the windmill, I had a huge tank slapper, nearly putting me through the fence of the windmill. We called that bend ginny on.

    • @TheVillageIdiot
      @TheVillageIdiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You've certainly gotta be careful on those bends. They're much tighter than they look.
      Fun fact, the driving bit of this video through Gunthorpe was done with (almost) a flat tyre. Didn't realise until i stopped at the end.
      Luckily I've got one of those pumps that not only inflates them but fixes them. I'd have been struggling to film anything else that day haha

      @@TheVillageIdiot I was going quick on my power valve. Just under a ton. I was going to Epworth from Misterton much better than the 161 I think it is.

    • @TheVillageIdiot
      @TheVillageIdiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah A161 is straighter. Trent way is a much more a drivers road
