- The Seven Dwarven Rings are quite mysterious compared to the Rings of Men and Elves, because we know much less about their history and powers. Were they any different from the Rings of the Nazgul? And did they turn the Dwarves invisible and extend their lifespan? And how did they increase the wealth and greed of the Dwarves?

Do you think that the Dwarves suffered a worse fate from their rings of power compared to Men? And do you think that they were responsible for some of the worst misfortunes that befell the Dwarven kingdoms? As always subtitles are available and feedback is welcome!
Well, as long as they remained rich, they kept some sort of free will the Nazgul didn't have.
The men who received the rings of power got the worst fate. While the Dwarven rings brought more ultimate misfortune to their race, the individuals who welded the rings avoided being slaves to Sauran. The Dwarven rings brought initial fortune to the race, but I believe they were also the root cause for their misfortunes. The loss and destruction of the seven rings helped to change their fortune; but it was too late the misfortunes that rings brought had already sealed the fate of the Dwarven people.
But this got me thinking, why didn't Gimli carry the One Ring if he's much more resilient?

As Eru Illuvatar intervened by sending back Gandalf the White, I believe He or the Valar (by mysterious, ethereal means, affecting Middle earth itself, or by knowledge of mortals' tendencies) may have subtly guided the RoP to the race least likely to abuse it who would also not cast it away forgetfully.

The Dwarven Rings seemed to carry a curse upon them or else gathering too much gold would cause it. As gold was tainted by Morgoth it's possible that his malice called the dragons, his creations, to it.

I love lotr but I’ve never heard that all gold was tainted by Melkor. Is that in the Silmarillion somewhere?
@@petermerrill6507, yes. It's was part of Morgoth trying to dominate the planet. I believe Tolkien goes deeper into the explanation in Morgoth's Ring where he basically says that Morgoth had poured so much of himself in trying to control Arda that he couldn't be fully defeated until the planet was cleansed and made anew. Some things were more tainted by his influence than other things gold was most susceptible and gemstones less so.
I see the rings as a curse, but as the seven had an inability to directly corrupt individuals, they instead cursed their families through malice and evil, and so cursed all Dwarves to suffer and fail. I would assume it’s in Sauron’s making of the rings that gives it a calling to fell beasts etc. The gold sickness or dragon sickness seems to be referred to separately, probably due to it predating the trilogy in The Hobbit.
*gold seems to attract dragons...that's not exactly a desirable perk for obtaining a pretty ring from a dark man with a spooky voice*
I wonder if the Dwarven Rings did do their job and severely cripple the Dwarves and kept them from being a major factor. It's effects were far more subtle and insidious and distracted the Dwarven Kingdoms from being a threat to Sauron's plans.
Yeah I feel that they indirectly played a big part in the failure of the Dwarves as a race, since they brought so many evils upon them
The dwarves scarce mating and breeding would have eventually played a part as well I think given enough battles over time...
They may have certainly still helped saurons cause in the end, but they certainly didn't work like sauron intended. Sauron wanted to dominate the dwarves lords much like the 9 kings of men. The fact that he was enraged at the fact the dwarves resisted the rings and wanted to reclaim them is evidence of that.

I wonder if the balrog would have never awoken had the power of one of the dwarven rings not come so close. I imagine when the dwarves broke into the creature's chamber in khazad dûm, they summoned Durin so he could see the ancient horror for himself. As he approached the dormant Balrog, one of the cheif servants of Melkor, its eyes went aflame and a great shadow filled the room. Durins bane it was, and its wrath at being woken would be terrible.

Blinded by greed, their usage of their ring undoubtedly led to their downfall, interestingly, their luck only turned to good when they lost their ring.
After Durin’s Ring was lost, the dwarves ill fortune turned and they eventually even reclaimed one of their greatest kingdoms, Erebor.
The Dwarven Rings seemed almost worse than the Rings of Men because their effects were so subtle that no one noticed until it was too late.
Yeah, they were much better off without them
What if that is the true power of the rings is it rewards those who can fight the rings influence prob not true but would be a crazy twist

I am no sure, but i remember to have read somewhere that the attack in moria was leaded by the nazgul to recover the dwarven rings and left the mines overrun by sauron servants in the state the fellowship found it!

I would like to see more geographic videos of Middle Earth. That you go through lands, areas and their history! For example why not start a journey from East to West, one video for each land? :D
The rings are a cleaver literary device to pull the factions together, it's a way to run subplot threads into it

Since I discovered you Ive been pretty hyped about lotr, and Im currently rewatching the long edition, keeping me eyes out for all the details. Maybe you have covered it already but I was wondering...what did the dwarfes, especialy those from the hobbit, do during the happening of the lord of the rings? Im not sure if they appear at all?

It would have been really cool if Thorin had worn the last of the 7 dwarven rings, so that when Bilbo put on the One ring, he would have held sway over Thorin's will. He could have forced him to overcome the Dragon sickness and surrender part of the Lonely Mountain's treasure to the elves and men who claimed it. A better twist ending to the Hobbit?
Would have been cool but it was clearly stated that the one ring wouldn't follow the commands of anyone but Sauron. Otherwise Bilbo could have swayed the owners of the three elven rings as well.....which were being used. OR..........maybe Bildo DID sway them. Dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnn. Plot twist!

Great Video! Based on this video I have an idea for two theory videos:
1. What if Thrain gave his ring of power to Thorin secretly before he left for Erebor?

Maybe you could do a couple videos about each age such as the First and Second, explaining the major events that unfolded in each and how they shaped Arda to what we know it as now?
I cannot decide who I like more in Middle Earth: Elves or Dwarves.
Elves have such deep history and great historical figures like Fëanor, Celebrimbor, Fingolfin and etc. They are so fascinating to read about and imagine myself like them.
Yet, the Dwarves are great. They are funny, strong and great as characters. They are loyal and stubborn like rock and also very fascinating to read about, and their adventures and history and origin are just masterfully written.
Put short: I would like an Elf for a girlfriend and a Dwarf for a friend:)

Yeah it's hard to pick a favourite race. Personally I'd still stick to the race of Men, but having a bunch of Dwarven buddies would be awesome!

Believe it or not, the reason for the dwarves' incredible resilience against corruption (except through greed) was not just because they were made of stone.
They were created by Aüle, and he got in a spot of trouble with Eru over it because it wasn't in the plan. Eru explained that Aüle could never give them a will of their own, but in amnesty and love He offered to give them a will of their own and He sanctified them to Himself, which means they became a holy adoption to Him and were set completely apart from the Elves and Men in that they existed all at once inside and yet apart from the course of the world. After all, had the Elves somehow been corrupted, there would have to have been one race left that could withstand (or at the very least weather) Sauron until the end of Arda.
So they became a sort of contingency you might say.

Lovely video! I think there were 7 dwarves rings not because Sauron wanted to give more to humans, but because there were 7 dwarves houses, nothing more.
I have yet to see a video on "old man willow" would love to hear more about him
Am I off base? The Seven weren't necessarily created specifically for the Dwarven race. The were simply the rings that Sauron (and Celebrimbor possibly in Durin's case) doled out to the leaders of the Dwarven houses (of which there are seven). My take is that unlike The Three, the other 'great rings' were much less racially specific. I can understand why Celebrimbor would make specific rings with specific powers for the Elves...their desires and values are very unique compared to the other races. I just don't see him laboring on seven rings for a bunch of Dwarven kings he didn't even know and who bore very little impact on the Elves or their interests. The one thing all the rings bore in common was the taint of Sauron; the purpose of which is to ensnare and dominate, and I think that taint personalized the manifestation of the rings power to its wielder...much in the same way the One bequeathed power (of varying degrees) to each of its wielders based on their individual ethical codes and moral constitutions.
I think Sauron's plan whatever it was worked. It kept the dwarves distracted I imagine once Sauron realized they were too resilient, they had to be rendered a nonfactor and destroyed. Had Sauron's machinations not bore fruit LOTR would have been different with the dwarves far more active.

The question then become even IF the some of the dwarven rings had survived the fall of Mordor, would their be any power left in them?
It is made quite clear at the end of the Lord of the Rings that as soon as the one ring was destroyed the elven rings lost their power, forcing the remaining elves to return to the undying lands.
So by that logic the same thing would probably have happen to the Dwarven rings had any of them survived, making them just another pretty ring with a pretty stone in them and nothing else.
Always wondered what or to whom sauron gave the rings he recovered I thought maybe given to easterlings or soutrons to increase his control or power over them

How did Sauron appear to the peoples (especially the Elves) that they initially trusted him, so much so to look to him for teachings on how to craft things?
Also, wasn't it said that the rings just enhanced the owners true self? Corruption, dominance, etc?
He used a noble form and disguise and called himself Annatar :) And the rings did enhance their user's natural talents though they also had their own innate abilities
So i thought about your sauron video and came up with a couple hypothesises on why morgoth and sauron would work together
1) sauron didn't know
Morgoth kept his real plan to himself and told everyone else that he was simply trying to conquer the world as such sauron assumed that he could just perfect the world once it is dominated
2) morgoth didn't know saurons plan
Sauron might have known the plan to kill everything but his plan was for after the world was conquered he would lead his army into a civil war to defeat morgoth and create his perfect world
3) i did have a third one but I've forgotten :/
I find the sad part about sauron is that had he not been impatient he probably could've achieved his end goal by consuling kings and leaders to provide advice on how to make their nations more efficient but instead he fell to darkness

I think my feelings are the same as about most Dwarven things in Tolkien; they felt a little tacked on. It's nice that they got a focus, of sorts, in the Hobbit, but a shame that Dwarves serm so incidental in the rest of the Lord of the Rings. There are practically two whole Houses of the Dwarves we barely know about. Some dragons were able to topple many of their centers, but we know nothing of them; did heroes ever kill those wyrms? Are they still there, sitting on hoards of loot? Did Sauron ever consider using these lesser dragons as discount Smaugs? It's also weird that, once he had them back, Sauron did nothing with them. He didn't give them to some middling Dwarves, who might fall under his sway, and topple their leaders, nor did he give them to humans to corrupt, since they didn't really seem racially keyed (all were made for Elves, at one time). It's neat that they did still have an impact on the Dwarves, but a shame that, like so many othervthings regarding these not-Elves, so little detail was comparatively given.

It really makes you wonder if Morgoth didn't breed that desire for gold and riches into dragons when corrupting them. He didn't want only a tool for massive destruction but one that could instinctively feel out hordes of wealth and uncover hidden enemies his armies couldn't find.
I always thought it was the rings that helped drive their greed since he couldn't corrupt them directly as he did with men. So Sauron sort of took what he could
I think the dwarven rings are totally misunderstood in Tolkien Lore. All they did was make the Dwarves better at being Dwarves. Better Miners, better Crafters, better strategists etc.
That made them better at creating a kingdom and acquiring wealth.
As wealth became hoards, the dragons followed.
And Sauron effectively removes 6 of the 7 Dwarf Armies from fighting alongside the elves and men. Nice play and the dragons did all the work for him.

I think its Aule's doing that the Dwarves were capable of resisting Sauron's will (he made them stubborn and hardy after all). Pretty ironic considering that Aule was Sauron's former mentor/master
I always thought it would've been really interesting if the 7 dwarven ring bearers fell to the corruption of the one ring & became dwarven wraiths

I still wonder to this day if sauron could capture the balrog durins bane. Then drain its power and used it to forge another ring of power. The beast was after all an old maia spirit. Or at least once was. So I could see him using its power to boost his own power in the form of a ring.

I'd really wish there was more info about the effects of the rings of power. I always imagined the Dwarven rings of power to be somewhere between the rings of men and the rings of elves in their magic. Although in reality, they were probably far closer to the rings of men than the rings of elves.

Divines wish to achieve abstract concepts like order or peace or chaos and destruction
Elves wish to be deified and worshiped
Dwarves wish for riches and splendour
Men wish for power and glory
And hobbits wish for such small things that mean nothing to others in the world like simply keeping a single piece of jewellery to themselves

It doesn't turn elves invisible because they exist in both the material and the spiritual world because they are from Valinor. It turns men and hobbits invisible because they get partly pulled into the spirit world when they wear the rings since they naturally only exist in the physical world. Dwarves, like men and hobbits, were never in Valinor & only exist in the material world so they turn invisible the same as them. I have no idea if it ever blatantly says what happens if a dwarf wears a ring but based on established lore they would be effected the same as hobbits and men, elves are the only race that are affected differently.

i always thought all the rings had the power to increase whatever powers and talents the wearer has just like saurons ring does. And then there is one race specific added perk wich essentially is what these races would like.
Dwarves have some form of wealth gain humans have immortality and elves gain control over aspects of nature.
The one ring contains part of saurons power and can control the other rings so it kind of has 3 powers.
its interesting that sauron taught the crafting to the elves instead of crafting with the dwarves because i feel if the dwarves crafted the rings they could be even more powerful
He didn't want the rings to be overly powerful, especially since the Dwarves were resistant to the corruption

I’m curious though, would it not make sense for the Elves to tell everyone else that the rings had some evil connection to Sauron (and that they were indeed of huge importance to him since he was ready to wage war in order to get them). I understand that he could have given the rings to some far away human kingdoms in the east, but to think the Dwarves just took them without anyone getting a bit concerned is a bit baffling to me. I might be missing something, but the question really bothers me XD
The Elves that created the Rings of Power were wiped out. And other groups of Elves kept to themselves, mostly. Also, Elves and Dwarves usually hated each other.
@@Paulafan5 But Gil-galad, Galadriel and Cirdan surely must have known that there were other rings of power, or at the very least that Celebrimbor was working with Sauron on other "projects". Idk, it seems odd to me that no one besides Sauron and Celebrimbor knew of the 16 lesser rings since it took so many years to craft them. And while the relations between Dwarves and Elves was not good, they for sure weren't enemies. And the Dwarves of Moria were on good terms with the Elves of Ost-in-Edhil, even saving the remainder of Elrond's forces in the battle with Sauron. Would it not make sense for one of the Elven lords to at least comment on the fact that they were almost mind-controlled by Sauron when he put on the One Ring. That way they would at least be careful when dealing with outsiders offering them powerful rings for no reason.
As far as we know, none of the Elves of Eregion survived, and I doubt the other Noldor could have done much at that point (or even if the other races would have listened to them!)

Would the Rings have the ability to draw the balrog in Moria? Or the Rings really calling out 2 durin's Bane?
It's really hard to say. The One Ring was able to call out to evil creatures, though there's nothing to indicate that the other rings of power had similar abilities.

I never could figure why a dragon would want gold.
A dragon's greatest desire is to dominate, destroy and bring fear. The gold and treasure of it's enemies are a constant symbol of it's success and power. Depriving them of that which they value most. I figure it was also a way for dragons to elevate themselves among their own kind.

First, we have nothing from Tolkien telling us that any of the rings, with the exception of the One and the Three, were in any way different from each other. Maybe Sauron never touched the ring given to Durin, but we have no indication it was in any way special besides that.
Sauron and Celebrimbor made the Nine and the Seven, total 18. Sauron gave 7 of them to Dwarves, because there were 7 Dwarven clans, each with a king. If there had been 8 or 6 Dwarven clans, Sauron would have split them accordingly. But there were 7, so Sauron gave 7 to the Dwarven clans and that is that.
He has 9 left over. Note that we hear that the Nine were given to Men who were already Kings, warriors or sorcerers. We have no clear idea about the tribes / clans of Men. We know there were 3 houses of the Edain who formed the Numenoreans. Sauron didn't give a ring to the king of the Numenoreans, he gave at least 1 to a Black Numenorean. I suspect he would have given the rest out where he thought it would do him the most good.
