Wizard of Oz! Thank you for showing the magic! No wonder this is by far (really far) the best youtube channel about trail running.

As a Jeff Pelletier fan, I enjoy all of your content! The trail running and racing videos are my favorite because I get to live vicariously though you, but I enjoy the training diaries, how tos, and gear review videos too.

I just want to say a massive thank you for taking us along with you in your year of training and running adventures. Your videos are top notch and always very interesting. Well done! If I had to choose what type of content I prefer, I would choose the running adventures themselves, as opposed to the normal weekly updates (although again, I have enjoyed every single video immensely).

What I appreciate is that you don’t just crank out content to gain more TH-cam traction. Some channels I used to be subscribed to just kept on pumping up the volume to please the algorithmic gods. But it didn’t improve quality or focus. One of the most important things is choosing what not to do.
A training series like this is good, but if you ask me, it restricts you too much in terms of showing / talking about other things you really enjoy. So I think it’s a good choice to have fewer episodes and more room for the rest of your ideas.

    Hello from Romania,
Thank you for your honesty, I am a recent subscriber and a fan of your work and accomplishments, you inspire me and my wife to do the Montblanc trail together.
But for now we will explore our country and let you know if we find trails worth of your time.
    Keep up the good work.

I’d been following you and Audrée on Strava long before I knew about your TH-cam.
The training diaries and “day in the life” kind of content are what keep me engaged as a fellow runner. It’s easy to find adventure videos on TH-cam. Finding human and expert advice from strong trail runners is much rarer.
    Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for showing behind the scenes. I don't know anything about making videos, but the fake lamp light vs real lamp light and color grading before and after comparisons were both very interesting. I liked your Training Diaries and watched every one of them. I find it easier to fall into a routine of watching a short weekly series than waiting for a long form video release. It is nice to follow along with someone else who is building up to a peak and then tapering. Having just 16 episodes next time does sound better than 26. Again, thanks for the great content!

This series was really interesting to follow! I am not a trail runner, but I found it full of information that I could transfer into the endurance sports that I do! I also absolutely love the full documentaries on the bigger events as well because it makes me really appreciate how absolutely big some people's dreams really are and I think about that when I'm going on my "long workout." I think to myself, "some people do this for days but I get to take a shower in 5 hours and sleep in my own bed so how hard is my workout really? :)". Produce what makes you the happiest and gives you the most fulfillment -that will come out in whatever you do and will give us all great content!

  • @kumikey
    @kumikey ปีที่แล้ว +2

I very much appreciate the manual closed-captions! English is not my first language. While i think i'm pretty proficient at it - sometimes there are just words i'm not familiar with or are hard to understand with background noises, or a little bit of mumbling going on, etc. I distinctly remember a video where Audrée talked about a "FSR" and i had no idea what she meant. But your closed-captions already spelled it out - Fire Service Road. Instantly made sense and i didn't need to double-check if i heard that correctly or google what it meant or thinking about if auto-captions were just wrong in that case and so on.
I personally prefer more videos on your races with the odd Diary--Style Video in-between here and there. Showing some training, relaxing, fast-packing, going for longer runs with friends - that kind of thing.
Thank you for all the work you put into this!

Thank you so much for sharing this. Young ones don’t realize how much work goes into successful TH-cam videos. It all just “doesn’t happen because you’re good”. A lot of work goes into this. A lot of errors. A lot of time. Great job, as always. Go 🇨🇦

Hey Jeff! For my own part, I love the series. Balance is indeed important in all things, but I really like the nitty gritty of the diary format. Neat longer form documentaries are nice too, of course, but it’s the training insights that captivated me. I’m sure you’ll find the right balance next season! All the best!

  • @gerrybesworth7762

This peek behind the curtain was not at all disappointing. It certainly explains the quality of the finished product and we viewers are the fortunate benefactors. Have to say I am a fan of both the training series and the race videos so put my vote comfortably on the fence, though I recognize you have limited time so that isn't likely helpful.
Thanks as always for the work you do!

  • @emma-eventing
    @emma-eventing 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

100% find it all interesting, and so much more! i've really enjoyed your more regular granular nitty gritty training diaries, but basically just enjoy regularity in content above all else. your feature productions are obviously incredible, and probably how many of us mere mortals found your channel... but we also of course love the look behind the curtain every now and again. i hope you can continue to find a balance between the two that will work for you!

You're speaking my language here. I'm sure most people had no idea the work that goes into your videos. My family thought for my videos, like my Mackenzie Range Perez Lookout mini doc, I just shot some clips on a go pro imported it and it was done lol. I'm sure my a7siii shed a tear over that let alone map animations, sound design, titles, choosing audio and what takes the most time.. storytelling.

Hey Jeff. I stumbled upon your videos about a year ago when trying to figure out how to choose my first camel bag. Then I watched another video, and another one... Now, I can say that I'm part of the fans who's expecting your regular releases. I can't say whether I prefer the shorter videos or the longer ones as it also depends on my mood.
As everyone else here on this channel. I wanted to say thank you for your time and dedication! There's hardly ever a video that I feel like I've wasted my time. I've enjoyed many of them and my family are also watching some along as we all appreciate the pictures you're sharing with us.
Congrats for your season! We'll take whatever you'll drop next. Take some time for yourself.

Jeff, the training diaries were fun. I think what made it fun was the people, the different places (BC helps a lot), and the travels (Colorado, France, Mont Blanc) - more than the technical training stuff (at least for me) and the reality show-type of videos (a direction you didn't take, thank God). If you keep varying those factors, another series will be great. I love the weekly videos, and I realize there's a tradeoff btw producing them versus some other great series like Namibia or races overseas. Please, clone yourself! 😉Anyway, thank you for the great stuff. It's been my #1 youtube channel to watch.

Everything from the communication and the production of these videos has been fantastic. I personally really like the recurring training videos, and perhaps if it's too overwhelming for the rest of your workload, maybe cutting it to just be bi-weekly or once a month? Though I do understand that probably puts more pressure to fit more information in which might take just as long. I do agree and in fact like the consistent format of how you present these, and even if it was just sharing some random thoughts you had throughout the week that would definitely still feel engaging to me. I do 100% acknowledge the time commitment aspect of it all however, and in the end I can imagine the creative process of your larger adventures might spark more joy for you. I of course, and I'm sure many others can agree, that those videos captivate us all probably the most (I'm sure the analytics back this up).
In the meantime I'll save up so hopefully I can join yourself and Audrée for an adventure and to support your channel. Take care and have a great weekend.

The biggest thing I love about your videos is your voice. Back when you talked about it last year I too was surprised about the prompter because your voice is so personal -- you seem to be in the room with me just talking (forget all the rest of your fans!). I enjoyed your training series because it was such an interesting slice into a sport I know nearly nothing about. Learning new things is very important. Less training and more focused videos is my vote simply because I truly loved the Namibia race. I do wish you have given us even a general date for the Georgia series -- but I do understand.

Jeff, it’s truly been a pleasure tagging along on this ride. You’re the only content provider that I religiously follow and look forward to watching the videos each week. I’ll miss your training diaries over the winter but enjoy the extra time to work on your bigger projects. Certainly looking forward to the full Georgia recap - as the Racing Namibia series is where I first became addicted to your content. I think one thing I’d take from that Series and put into your weekly videos would be more interaction with other runners, as I think that’s the best part of trail running (the community) - I really enjoyed when you spent time incorporating Audree and other friends into your videos. Long way of saying - I can’t wait for any content you release. It’s all fantastic. And I’ll add that you one of my biggest inspirations for completing my first ever ultra 50K in September. You made the sport feel approachable and accessible to athletes of any background or ability. Thank you!

Maybe do 16 newsletters over the year instead of 25, but publish every 2 weeks instead of weekly. Watching this video there are quite a lot of little ‘blips’ (continuity?) which make it look as if there have been quite a few takes to get the whole video done. I like the use of a teleprompter, I have used one myself in the past. It certainly avoids all the errs and ums and allowed me to read through my script out loud and spot where I had written words I would never use in speech or stumble over. I have only recently come across your work and love it. Keep up the great work.

Wow, as we say in spain, this episode it's been the cherry (icing) on the cake of this seasson of training diaries. Thanks for your great work and great videos!
I'd love to see more of your daily training logs, but I'd be lying if I said I don't miss your longer documentary videos of the races you've run.
I think it could be an interesting balance, doing a shorter training diary series (like you said, 16 episodes) and taking more time for the longer documentaries.
And yes, I'm Spanish, but I don't need to use subtitles. One of the reasons is because your English is very clear and you don't miss the script (now I now use a teleprompter).

I loved the shift into a season training rhythm - it mirrored all of us Canadians' training rhythms well, and you acted as a bit of an accountability partner for my own goals as you trained for yours! A well-deserved break in this rhythm is warranted, but I speak for many of us in saying that another 'seasonal shift' next summer would be awesome!

I thoroughly enjoyed this series. As a back-of-the-pack plodding trail runner and as an old-travel enthusiast (pre-mortgage & kids) there is consistently so much to enjoy. Since discovering your work around the start of 2022, I’ve gone back and watched all the old stuff. This particular episode has certainly raised the respect level to you, seeing the amount of work going into the production - of what I understand is the hobby element of your main career. Now knowing how much time it takes from your week to prepare, produce and provide this content, I feel guilty saying this - but to the question if the future should be more series or more one-off productions/projects - the answer is I want it all!

Thank you for showing us how much work goes into producing these videos that are so effortless looking. The true sign of a professional is to make something complicated and difficult appear simple and easy. It’s a great tutorial for those who aspire to tell their own story. I’d love to maybe see. Twice a month training update since a lot of training is based on incremental changes. That would help to balance time spent on the training series with the larger projects that we all love.

Thoroughly enjoyed the diaries leading up to UTMB, good for them to have a purpose as we followed your journey. My favourite films were the Namibia race series, amazing scenery and great to learn about the other competitors, they tell a story behind the race which you often don't see in running videos.

I do like the adventure and longer videos but I absolutely enjoyed the training diaries maybe even more. I usually watch them in my lunch break or in the middle of the day and I find your videos just soooo relaxing and compelling and their duration is just right. The daily training sessions, struggles, goals, are super relatable to my everyday training and I enjoy a lot all the footage from Vancouver and British Columbia, it just seems such a chill place to live, like the perfect mixture of urban, forests, mountains and sea. Whatever you do next I'm sure I'll watch and enjoy it 👍 have fun in azores, definitely one of the jewels from my country Portugal!

Jeff, I enjoy your stuff so much. You're my favorite "TV show"! To answer one of your questions, I would prefer that you spend more time doing the longer videos of big races and interesting places, rather than more shorter stuff. I loved Racing Namibia and some of your other longer stuff.

  • @scriptosaurusrex

I really enjoyed the series. I like the bitsize chunks. Makes them easier to watch when they are released, rather than coming back to them later, which I often forget.
Then again, the long films are what brought me here in the first place and what I get the most out of when watching.
Love the bespoke captions as well. I had noticed on some of your films in the past you had French as well, which is great. Doesn't help me, but I love the accessibility of it.

Also, that GTD mention never passed me by, as a long term GTD user I'm thrilled to hear you use the system. I bet you don't have many 2 min rule actions mind you 😂
I'm neutral on what you choose to do, as whatever you do will be of incredible quality as it always is. I love the longer format but have learned loads in the training diaries too. Youve got me subscribed either way 🙏🏻👊🏻

    Hey Jeff,
Thankd for the fun BTS and Video Making process. As a VFX Artist, photographer, and trailrunner novice I really appreciate getting to know how much work people do to make certain videos. I've been following you on strava and here for a while and your videos keep getting better!
I'd like to see a bit more of the race videos mixed up with the training videos, so perhaps reduce the amount of training content.
But also I'd love to have a tutorial style video on running form and gait for uphill and downhill trailrunning because I feel like there's lack of information on that topic online, which is very different from all the information you can find on road running.
Also please feel free to hit me up if you need help on strava graphics since you mentioned that's what takes you the longest time to make, which, for me would be something easy and simple.
Thanks again for all the content you keep making, very inspiring!
    Keep going strong Jeff!

Fascinating look behind the scenes! Your production is the gold standard Jeff! I took for granted how much work & consideration goes into your movies. You make something extremely complicated look effortless. Congrats mate 👍

Super interesting Jeff, great to learn from the best. I’m glad I’m not the only one struggling with thumbnails and the like haha I need to work on the sound and the color grading big time.
As for the type of content, I’m a big fan of the longer format films you make with the adventure angle.

Thanks for this one Jeff, as an amateur videographer, this was a fantastic video to watch. We all watch how-to videos on youtube but seeing someone whose videos we're familiar with actually explain things is great. And yes, if you decide yo share your Go-Pro LUTS I'd be interested. For running videos with Go Pro I'm picking various preset LUTS in Davinci, I haven't settled on specific ones to use yet. Thanks for this series, great job!

Thanks for the video series. Even though I’m not a trail runner I love watching them for the scenery and I also take away some tips I can use during long distance hiking trips.

I think this video helps me appreciate your videos more. You didn't mention your music selections which have sometimes been edited with the video so well it seems like they music was created for the video. This was my observation on some of your older videos. Thanks for putting out high quality trail content.

I liked tour weekly training video as it helps me improve mine too. And on the other hand, discovering new races and country its so overwhelming 🤩. I'll take whatever you give us 🥰

Thanks for the series Jeff. Really insightful video on your process, was wondering how you went about it and the dedication required to produce such high quality stuff. Also loved the fact that there is a Billy Yang connection after enjoying his content for many years. So glad to have found your channel and will annoy my friends with suggestions that they check it out. I'd love to see another series because I find it super motivating. Cheers from NZ

Love all your videos Jeff! Highly anticipating your videos from Georgia and UTMB. I think I lean toward your race videos but very much enjoyed your training videos. Training takes months/years and a race is one (or several) days. It's nice to see the hard work leading up to races. I think your plan of doing fewer training videos is a good plan so you also have time for other pursuits. That being said, whatever speaks to you creatively, the quality of your videos will keep me watching. Thank you for your efforts and attention to detail in your work.

Great insight Jeff, thank you. I'm just about to start my own training series next week for my first solo 50 miler and its really useful to see how a Pro makes such engaging content. Thanks once again from here in England!

Firstly wow. Just wow. Given the quality of your videos, I thought that you put in a lot of work, technical expertise and creativity. But, I underestimated how much. As for the new informal poll, as much as I loved this format, I won't stand in the way of your creative process. I am looking forward to your ideas and the contents you will produce. That being said, time to plan some iterations myself 🙂

That is sooooo much work and thinking and preparation and gear and time and money that you put into these, it's just amazing 👍👍 I really love these kind of behind the scenes videos, it shows you how much better you "pro" guys are 😉 the lamp in the background thing I would never even thought about something like that The deadline thing is great as well, as I still have like 4 videos to cut from a year ago (but guess having a small baby to take care of is a good enough excuse to not have time 😁😁) Keep up the amazing work and thank you for all your efforts, really appreciate it

So insightful as always Jeff! I'm always looking for ways to improve my own TH-cam videos and I I truly appreciate the transparency and insight of, not only this video, but all of your videos. There are countless videos on TH-cam about filmmaking, but somehow I never find them as helpful as yours! I've just recently made the switch to a teleprompter myself and it's also nice to know that it can be done in a way that's natural and non-invasive. I'm struggling a bit with making it feel natural, but I think those skills will come with time (I've also never been on camera before). I made the switch for a lot of the same reasons you mentioned here.
As far as video preference, I personally prefer the series on your longer races. I think it was the Namibia series which solidified it for me, especially the interviews with the various runners. It added such a personal touch and the quality of the filmmaking was top notch as well. I'll be here regardless - just looking forward to more! Best of luck and thanks for high quality videos!

Keep it up, it takes a lot of practice but as we say, you need to make 10, 20, maybe even 100 bad or mediocre videos before you can start making really good ones.

All your content is great and inspiring with people interactions, activities, running it self, production quality, so egoistic I want it every week AND movies of your races/adventures :-) How ever, your race/adventure movies are really what I love so that togheter with "living room" content every second week or even every month would be my choice.

Wow! That’s a lot of work, I can appreciate why they are so slick now!!
As an aspiring new trail runner I’ve found this series super helpful, so thank you for taking the time to make it.
I’ve been so inspired I’ve signed up to my first UTMB scoring event next May.
    Enjoy your ‘downtime’ Jeff.
