co-written by Richard Pryor. he was supposed to play black bart but the producers were reluctant over his volative nature. I read Mel offered Gene Wilder's role to John Wayne who laughed and turned it down for obvious reasons. He did say he would be first in line to see it. The role eventually went to Gig Young but he was too drunk after a week of shooting and was replaced by Wilder.
Not that anyone would really care...but Blazing Saddles heavily “borrows” from an earlier western “comedy” and other favorite film of mine “Destry Rides Again” with Jimmy Stewart and Marlene Dietrich. The plot and characters are almost exactly the same...minus the race angle...which when you think about it is really the “central character” in Saddles.

I saw this in high school in the 80's on VHS I guess. Might be time to watch it again.
funniest movies ever:
1. Blazing Saddles
2. Some Like It Hot
3. Airplane!
Also three movies that couldn't be made today?
Put a black man in charge, and some people just go nuts.
Amen to that.

Funny that Mr. Scott liked this film, yet hated the recent "Black Dynamite", which is on the same level of humor.
...on the same level??
@@danwroy Yes.
Can't make this movie today in this Cancel Culture environment.
You spent most of the review on the race issue and not the core of the film. Brooks didn't make this as some sort of social commentary piece either.
too slow
I just hated it. Not funny at all.
Maybe someday you will get a sense of humor
