I had never heard of Chris Hedges but this is the most intelligent conversation I have heard in a very long time. Don’t know what I would do without the sanity that is Chris Hedges. He sees oppression as it is, while I see it through the insane filters of corporate advertising and right influences social media.
When we learn to decipher the wheat from the chaff, we will discover that Chris Hedges is one of the few true proponents of truth and justice left. Respect and treasure him !!!
He's clueless about "the Christian Right." For one thing, there isn't really much of one. And the one which there is doesn't have a lot of interest in economic issues. The vast majority of "the Christian Right" are populists. Their concerns ARE economic. They also have a cultural inheritance which is to a greater or lesser extent Christian. But they are immensely reachable to a populist or populistic movement which doesn't insult them. Hedges hard slaps them constantly, with the arrogance which they have insightfully associated with the elites. Why he does this I think can be explained by his hostility to orthodox Christian belief. He's a man ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church, USA. The PCUSA has been heretical if not apostate for many years. It tolerates Hedges, probably gladly, because by his own honest admission, Hedges denies every cardinal doctrine of the Christian faith. It is a shame that a man who has as much to bring to the game as Hedges clearly has can't get over his animus against traditional Christians. I guess that anybody who is intelligent enough to read this understands that Koch brothers types have no more use for traditional Christians than the Woke Left has. But Hedges and his type just will not stop, even though, as Hedges acknowledges, many Trump voters had voted for Sanders in the 2016 Democratic primaries. Yes, I am one of those traditional Christians. My first presidential vote was for McGovern, my second for Carter. I despise and always have the oligarchs. There are scores of millions who have my general view of this. But Hedges, a brilliant fool, and his type are so dumb they will not open their eyes to see that we have far, far more in common with the hard economic Left than we have with the Republicans. You do not insult people into making common cause with you.

@@peterstafford4426 I’d say the truth is always constructive, a recognition of reality, of what we’re actually up against. Hedges articulates that better than most and he’s firm on the moral imperative of revolt. But if none of that resonates with you right now, that’s fine.
This kid is one of the best interviewers of Hedges I have ever witnessed. Most elites buckle , understandably in Chris’s presence. This youngster asked some good tough questions and kudos to Hedges for patiently answering instead of being a prima Donna. Well done.
I agree that Nadav Raz. was one of the best interviewers of Chris Hedges. And judging by Chris's expressions, he was thoroughly enjoying the questions, even though some of them were challenging - which was ultimately probably why he enjoyed them.
I mean, I feel like we're headed more towards a Huxley dystopia. But Orwell's work was more impressive and compelling. He was also spot on when it came to blind hate and factionalization (albeit with external states of Eurasia and Eastasia), he was also spot on about language, stunting and debasing language and corrupting language, controlling language as a way to control thought.
@@SevenFootPelican Orwell discussed this...he was friends with Huxley. If you look closely the last half century, it's all been Brave New World, but as Orwell predicted it would, it is all quickly shifting to 1984 as the final years of late stage capitalism kick in. Look up what Amazon told their drivers ...that they had to now wear bio-monitors....google it, if they don't agree their employment ends tomorrow. 1984 has arrived.
It's closer to the end since humankind has just about civilized itself to death regarding climate catastrophe and the contamination of the planet with and endless assortments of visible and invisible toxins destroying the very habitat on which our survival depends.
Hedges is is always interesting. However, I felt I was in a barn given the Straw Man arguments. He's instructive because he underscores that an erudite intellectual can be as confused as the standard normie. For example, I doubt if many Christians believe Jesus came to make us rich or that God favors the White race (15:00). Maybe a couple of people here and there believe that, but not enough worth mentioning. That's what I mean about Hedges: he's brilliant but capable of being as wrong-headed as, say, Biden, or Trump when Trump carelessly lumps all illegal immigrants as rapists. Academics like Hedges cultivate a level of abstraction that impresses and sounds vaguely profound But if one digs a bit, his ideas become less useful. Absent a psychological/spiritual revolution, the world will continue to wallow in its confusion with the Hedges, Bidens, Trumps, endless wars and injustice holding fore. Worse, a dose of Hedges can make people simply give up: why resist when all is futile? My position is simpler and not intellectual at all. We're all imperfect; we all need God's Grace, and with forbearance and Faith the mountain of corruption will wither as even the system's proponents awaken to the presence of evil within themselves. In other words, as Pogo said, I have seen the enemy, and the enemy is us. Let us seek our individual, inner revolution, a revolution of awareness which catch phrases and labels can't describe. A Wise Man came to give us never-ending love which even a dummy like me can understand. Thus, there IS hope. Peace.
Excellent choice of guest. Hedges is the key to awakening people to how the system really works. His writing is awesome as well, strongly recommend Death of the Liberal Class- although you can't go wrong with any of his books.
Perfect! You are pushing his books! That is the only reason Hedges makes videos - to sell his BS books. He is 100% con artist. All he cares about is book sales. He knows there is a big audience for the line of crap he pushes. He is an intellectual version of Jimmy Dore - a man he praises.
His repeats his message over and over because the truth we need is always muffled/ hidden. I have his books and listen to him when I see him. And I have read some books he names. So when these terrible societal cons occur I'm not shocked, depressed or gaslit. I'm angry, aware and refuse to agree to certain actions I'm supposed to do. It's the first stage before organising and protest. In my case, people like Hedges have been essential in my education.
I read a lot of his books. I think four of them. I learned so much from them, but I wish I took notes so I can refer back to them when my thoughts get muffled and disoriented given the noisy media environment we live in. It was a couple years back when I churned through all of his books. So I'll have to re approach them and take notes next time. Unfortunately, I'm currently doing readings of classic works in literature and philosophy right now, so there's quite a few books I'll have to finish first, hah.
Yes. I disagree with Chris on only that he felt that Al Gore would have been better than Bush. I would re-phrase it as being the lesser of the two evils because Al catered to the corporate Oligarchs, too. He was under the Clinton Administration who passed NAFTA, a betrayal of the working class.
I was 7 during that election. I remember my stepdad (who was on unemployment at the time) would give my mother and I updates when we came home very night.
@@edwardcortes6668 Bush was put in office so that 9/11 *(inside job) could happen. Gore and Clinton are a part of this elite. They know the roles they are meant to play and they stick to the scripts, or they end up like JFK.
Ok, I agree with the caller, who talked about crony-capitalism. I wish the follow up question would’ve been “how are you communist regimes better?” the problem isn’t inherently capitalist, it’s corruption and control by the elites. If communism is controlled by the elites, it’s the actually worse.
At about 1:18:25 he says we have to adjust our own lifestyle for the environment. Yet there he speaks from what seems like a mansion by the standards of most people in the world, with enough lights for a small suburb, and two forests on the bookshelves. He clearly lives in material excess. Why does he not start the adjustment at home and move into a tiny house or take in some refugees from the third world to share all that space and material excess? Does he honestly think that while the increase of fossil fuel use in the 3rd world is lifting more people out of poverty than ever they are going to go back to a lifestyle he does not want for himself? Such arrogance.
Very interesting narrative. You talk of organising and the necessity of being ready for the inevitable uprising of the oppressed… Years ago I was an activist in the New Zealand Labour Party. Against the trend through clear targeted policy that was directly relevant to our demographic, plus organising = (identifying our support and mobilising that vote to the polls), we won our seat in two elections running. I was quite pleased with myself until after a post election celebration party a seasoned organiser said to me, “son, your first job is to get the b*****ds in. The real work is keeping them accountable and they Nader control. How true. Not long afterwards I left the country. Fifteenth years later I returned. Labour had been over run from within by a radical neocon faction which had totally decimated the Labour movement with disastrous consequences for working people. We still haven’t recovered. So much for 8 years of organising. I agree with your quote from Augustine, “Hope has two beautiful daughters, anger and courage”. But there needs to be more than this to sustain us in the interim.
I'm always hesitant when some men speak so freely while others are arrested, and silenced. Don't think powers that be aren't controlling both sides of the narrative, and I'm not saying Hedges is part of that. I believe George Carlin was part of that system. Our handlers have own code of conduct, and only cowards lie. Let people know what's going on, and your hands are clean. Have to admire that, and I'm more jealous than scared...
Wonderful comprehensive, perceptive, intelligent, insightful, mind-expanding and heard-headed realism - how do we distill this contribution o help all of us understand what the momentums are that are well and truly underway. More of the same will clearly not bring us into a healthy and wholesome interdependent society. Thank you all for bringing this to us.

@1:01:20 Chris makes a great point and I think black radicals are farther left than white leftist for the reason he states. Black radicals are connected to the oppression they speak out against while white leftist sees the issue and speaks out but aren't really connected to these communities.
Chris is amazing! The scope and breath of his knowledge is stellar. Not only as a reporter and commenter , as an educator he helps you to increase your core intelligence simply by listening. If he had a substantial position within the government our foreign policy would be a lot more balanced.
The twenty minute talk Chris Hedges gives at the begjinning is a great summary of the history of how we got where we are now. I know I should be reading all the books he mentions but I know what he states is based from his studies that I feel I do not have the time to read. Great talk and hope that young people take on his invitation to persist in changing the system..
I like much a quote he made. That Augustine mentions hope has two beautiful Daughters, Anger & Courage. So relevant and I believe succinctly true to face the fear & move on to betterment.
There’s no time for Hedges to teach at any college, but good to keep speakers like this in mind for future generations.,(Speaking truth to power for 81 years and STILL counting coup on fascist politics). The immediate task, I think is obvious: If you want to help this country remain a democracy, vote intelligently for starters. Political elites of BOTH PARTIES have made it clear
3rd time a charm (earlier attempts to reply were accidentally submitted…) It’s clear that there’s no chance of getting a viable candidate out of either of the reigning parties, but if a third party runs the right people we may have a chance. For example, I’d like to see Marianne Williamson as Vice President even though a woman like her would be perfect for the job. She’s articulate, confident in and charismatic as a speaker; also she is knowledgeable about American history and culture and has actually lived in good health and strong spirit through about 8 decades, as have I. Andrew Yang as President. Publicly Marianne has not announced she is running for anything. Andrew is running to keep his present Democratic congressional seat but remains a viable candidate for President with a 3rd party affiliation. The presidency takes a heavy toll on personal health, unfortunately, while wisdom increases when any intelligent person grows up and then continues to grow past middle age, at which time they are in their prime if they have not trashed their bodies, both mentally and physically. There’s a 20-30 year period (at present) before most people experience some sign of dissolution of the body. Fortunately, intelligence grows exponentially as age slowly diminishes physical health. I have made some important points here…please consider.
Thanks, Chris for being so honest about the genius James Baldwin. Jimmy, unfortunately, is not really wecome in so-called institutions of higher learing.
"Politics is a game of fear", truly sums up the goal of adversarial bureaucrats any place on the planet. Another problem is that our educational system teaches students to be workers and not entrepreneurs. That may have worked 100yrs ago but not today.

He abandoned the working class on all things COVID ... he won't go near it, he won't touch it!
@@douglascarlson9006 Give him time, please - and you actually may be missing some of Chris' work - have you read all of his books yet? Good fill in, I suggest. Peace, Elizabeth

HOW CHRIS HEDGES FAILED US
He's no longer a truly committed activist, not since the lock-downs ...
When will someone bigger than I have the balls to call this man out for going back on his word?
Many times he has urged us to resist tyranny, even when things look bleak ... but now that tyranny is in our face, he's MIA ...
Let us review a few of his more revealing quotes:
"I don't think we're going to stop the pandemic and the mutations until everybody gets vaccinated" ... (we can't vax ourselves out of this pandemic - AND HE KNOWS IT!)
BTW, he has refused to comment or stand with the working class against the illegal and unconstitutional vax mandates and passports
**************
"Let us stand up and resist so future generations will at least say ‘they tried.’ We cannot do this alone ... together we have a chance" ...
BTW, he has refused to comment on THE GREAT RESET, The World Economic Forum and the book THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
**************
In a 2020 interview, he said he told indigenous pipeline protesters to "park your cars in their path, remove the engines and walk away" ...
BTW, he did not even mention the Canadian trucker convoy until a March 2022 interview with Jimmy Dore - one month after the protests actually ended ...
**************
In his AMERICAN SADISM speech, he revealed his disdain for those of us who now openly question the motives and tactics of our elected officials ...
He said the loss of mainstream media credibility "has given rise to spontaneous groups, as well as the lunatic fringe that embraces conspiracy theories" ...
**************
From his book WAGES OF REBELLION, he said:
“I do not fight fascists because I will win. I fight fascists because they are fascists” ...
BTW, he will now only consent to occasional "hands-off" interviews with persons who will NOT challenge him:
- Amy Goodman
- Katie Halper
- Briahna Joy-Gray
- RJ Eskow
- Krystal Ball
- Kyle Kulinski ...
**************
After a 2014 speech, he was asked to comment on 9/11 and insulted our collective intelligence by saying "Bush was probably just asleep at the wheel" ...
**************
But he knows he can maintain his place in the independent media food chain by:
1) ripping on AOC & CIA
2) talking about Assange
3) talking about Snowden
4) talking about Donzinger
5) talking about Ukraine
I miss the pre-pandemic Chris Hedges ... many times these past 10 years I went to bed with his words ringing in my ears ...
He's said many awesome and memorable things that helped me understand and accept our current predicament and although his work with prison inmates is laudable, it is not nearly significant enough to offset the effects of his selective silence on these devastating working class issues ...
MAGA Patriots will come out Victorious..
Globalism and Globalists will CRUMBLES..
I had never heard of Chris Hedges but this is the most intelligent conversation I have heard in a very long time. I am often frustrated by those who just want to be spoon fed their news or politics or get it from the profit drive main stream media but never question what they are being sold (told). Here Chris responded to every question with thought and historical support. I found it thought provoking and informative. Thank you!
I have followed Chris Hedges for a number of years now. He has a gift for telling truth about evil factions without encouraging the expected hatred. If you have the time, research more of his work. He has his own EMail ....the Chris Hedges Report.....and is a regular on Scheerpost and TH-cam the Real News Network. The paranoid powerful who sit in our Capitol do not like him, for obvious reasons.

War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength.....Orwell pretty much nailed it and we are just getting started.....
@@SevenFootPelican And Orwell supposedly based his dystopia on Stalin's "communist" Russia.

Dept. of Corrections, Dept. of Defense, . . .
Peace.

Fantastic interview
+ great Q & A discussion.

It’s clear that there’s no chance of getting a viable candidate out of either of the reigning parties, but if a third party runs the right people we may have a chance.

Andrew is running to keep his present Democratic congressional seat but remains a viable candidate for President with a 3rd party affiliation.
