In a time of deceit, survival depends upon dealing in lies. That's the trouble. It becomes impossible to get ones head above water short of being a martyr. These times require martyrs. Only when the masses observe people with integrity taken out and shot to they even consider rising up.
Men are not satisfied unless they start some kind of war. Even as kids they play fighting as opposed to playing office management...why is that?
Because every morning before school we watch GI Joe and Transoformers, Wrestling Boxing ect. and other stuff that has war, Also you are always told that it is honorable to be a war veteran like its a great thing. Some twenty five years ago a Canadian professor told me that he subscribed to several U.S. newspapers because as he put it,
Whatever happens in the U.S. will eventually happen to us.
So I follow the difficulties you are having; anxious time up here as well.
I am not an American. I am widowed and over 60. I am truly amazed at the breadth and width of knowledge this gentleman has. I have no trouble understanding what he is trying to do. He is using his experience as a true journalist to try to teach all who are open minded and willing to listen to both sides of a story. Together all mankind would stand a chance if we educate our young to be critical thinkers.
And I understand him. I often have to go and find more information and my booklist to read is always longer after listening to him speak, he isn’t incomprehensible in any way though. An international treasure and someone I trust not to lie to me on purpose. Maybe that is naive but I have never found one and it has been several years of listening and reading. Take care of yourself. His explanation of the disillusioned middle class was nearly life changing for me the first time he explained it. I can understand and thusly empathize, at least think more clearly and with a deeper understanding. I’ll stop typing now lol. Take care.

Pease I know i just stated an oxymoron but on to an more important point that gives specifics to our clear and present dangers I just explainingg one point i.e . Biden's infrastructue bill expanding broadband internet! To keep the readers attention :Some factoid bona fides ! This writer is 91 years old with a degree in Physics and a Korean War veteran. I worked in Aerospace and Defense and did secret missile guidance targeting design while working for Northrop .The goal of this somewhat long message to point out a major scandal in Bidens bill to my mind :BROADBAND INTERNET EXPANSION Why ? What are my objections?
1 . As I pointed out earlier I am a retired physicist and I still copiously used the internet to study advanced physics so imagine my surprise when parent -teachers complained about how hard it was to lear at home to learn /(teach their children) via computers and video conferencing
2 These same chidren have no problem texting and playing video games (the 3d games require tremendous bandwith)

When we learn to decipher the wheat from the chaff, we will discover that Chris Hedges is one of the few true proponents of truth and justice left. Respect and treasure him !!!

Uhhh, America is terrified of our politicians, it's too bad they chose boot licking instead boot stomping to deal with their fears.
but you don't have to march in the streets with your hands in a fist or any physical way. All we have to do is to organize, think critically, engage, and take action to build and establish a real, credible, practical, and official democratic structure via some kind of public web portal that would facilitate an online democratic platform so that ordinary citizens no matter what your economic status is would be able to participate in the political process in a very meaningful, constructive, and significant way. The internet gives us the means to become a political force and to wield real democratic power upon society. As to why would someone like Chis Edges would not promote such a solution is something that bewilders me. Chris can exaggerate at times. "Romans were white and Jesus was a person of color. " He was Middle Eastern, and there are some Italians that may appear a little darker than northern Italians. The whole Mediterranean area are made up people of mostly somewhere between white and black. I tend to side with logic and reason, which is why I like Noam Chomsky better.
Hedges is an underappreciated national treasure & should be a voice promoted everywhere - on any & all alternative or mainstream airwaves - to WAKE UP a complacent, lethargic American citizenry.
He saved my life. It's a far fetched claim I know, but its a fact. I'm Afraid we won't see the likes of him again.

Yes. I disagree with Chris on only that he felt that Al Gore would have been better than Bush. I would re-phrase it as being the lesser of the two evils because Al catered to the corporate Oligarchs, too. He was under the Clinton Administration who passed NAFTA, a betrayal of the working class.
I was 7 during that election. I remember my stepdad (who was on unemployment at the time) would give my mother and I updates when we came home very night.

I mean, I feel like we're headed more towards a Huxley dystopia. But Orwell's work was more impressive and compelling. He was also spot on when it came to blind hate and factionalization (albeit with external states of Eurasia and Eastasia), he was also spot on about language, stunting and debasing language and corrupting language, controlling language as a way to control thought.

I had never heard of Chris Hedges but this is the most intelligent conversation I have heard in a very long time. I am often frustrated by those who just want to be spoon fed their news or politics or get it from the profit drive main stream media but never question what they are being sold (told). Here Chris responded to every question with thought and historical support. I found it thought provoking and informative. Thank you!
I have followed Chris Hedges for a number of years now. He has a gift for telling truth about evil factions without encouraging the expected hatred. If you have the time, research more of his work. He has his own EMail ....the Chris Hedges Report.....and is a regular on Scheerpost and TH-cam the Real News Network. The paranoid powerful who sit in our Capitol do not like him, for obvious reasons.
His repeats his message over and over because the truth we need is always muffled/ hidden. I have his books and listen to him when I see him. And I have read some books he names. So when these terrible societal cons occur I'm not shocked, depressed or gaslit. I'm angry, aware and refuse to agree to certain actions I'm supposed to do. It's the first stage before organising and protest. In my case, people like Hedges have been essential in my education.
I read a lot of his books. I think four of them. I learned so much from them, but I wish I took notes so I can refer back to them when my thoughts get muffled and disoriented given the noisy media environment we live in. It was a couple years back when I churned through all of his books. So I'll have to re approach them and take notes next time. Unfortunately, I'm currently doing readings of classic works in literature and philosophy right now, so there's quite a few books I'll have to finish first, hah.

Very interesting narrative. You talk of organising and the necessity of being ready for the inevitable uprising of the oppressed… Years ago I was an activist in the New Zealand Labour Party. Against the trend through clear targeted policy that was directly relevant to our demographic, plus organising = (identifying our support and mobilising that vote to the polls), we won our seat in two elections running. I was quite pleased with myself until after a post election celebration party a seasoned organiser said to me, “son, your first job is to get the b*****ds in. The real work is keeping them accountable and they Nader control. How true. Not long afterwards I left the country. Fifteenth years later I returned. Labour had been over run from within by a radical neocon faction which had totally decimated the Labour movement with disastrous consequences for working people. We still haven’t recovered. So much for 8 years of organising. I agree with your quote from Augustine, “Hope has two beautiful daughters, anger and courage”. But there needs to be more than this to sustain us in the interim.

He's clueless about "the Christian Right." For one thing, there isn't really much of one. And the one which there is doesn't have a lot of interest in economic issues. The vast majority of "the Christian Right" are populists. Their concerns ARE economic. They also have a cultural inheritance which is to a greater or lesser extent Christian. But they are immensely reachable to a populist or populistic movement which doesn't insult them. Hedges hard slaps them constantly, with the arrogance which they have insightfully associated with the elites. Why he does this I think can be explained by his hostility to orthodox Christian belief. He's a man ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church, USA. The PCUSA has been heretical if not apostate for many years. It tolerates Hedges, probably gladly, because by his own honest admission, Hedges denies every cardinal doctrine of the Christian faith. It is a shame that a man who has as much to bring to the game as Hedges clearly has can't get over his animus against traditional Christians.
I guess that anybody who is intelligent enough to read this understands that Koch brothers types have no more use for traditional Christians than the Woke Left has.
But Hedges and his type just will not stop, even though, as Hedges acknowledges, many Trump voters had voted for Sanders in the 2016 Democratic primaries.
Yes, I am one of those traditional Christians. My first presidential vote was for McGovern, my second for Carter. I despise and always have the oligarchs. There are scores of millions who have my general view of this. But Hedges, a brilliant fool, and his type are so dumb they will not open their eyes to see that we have far, far more in common with the hard economic Left than we have with the Republicans.
You do not insult people into making common cause with you.

Hedges seems intent on giving it his best here; well aware he’s talking to the young - our future and hope.

Chris is amazing! The scope and breath of his knowledge is stellar. Not only as a reporter and commenter , as an educator he helps you to increase your core intelligence simply by listening. If he had a substantial position within the government our foreign policy would be a lot more balanced.

When I listen to Chris, It reinforces my decision to leave America. I watched a very sick country become sicker in 21 yrs I lived there. Being from U.K. back then, I moved to US from Iran in 1981, I watched the US lose control of Iran, the US was hated by the Religious Population. Khomeini was an enormous force against the Shah, I remember how deep the hatred for US was, among the people. Obviously wealthy Iranians fled their country to USA & Europe, to protect their wealth and way of life. I traveled to Iran in Jan 1976 so I saw life there under the Shah then from 1979 -81 under Khomeini. Fortunately I could speak Farsi, so apart from having to adjust to a totally different set of rules, I enjoyed living there. Living with Persians was a way to understand how to adjust from Public life to a normal life at home. The people are so hospitable and genuinely very friendly. I was sorry to leave, the Company was US owned, I conducted all management, but the Company was eventually Nationalized. I left reluctantly and relocated to the USA.

The twenty minute talk Chris Hedges gives at the begjinning is a great summary of the history of how we got where we are now. I know I should be reading all the books he mentions but I know what he states is based from his studies that I feel I do not have the time to read. Great talk and hope that young people take on his invitation to persist in changing the system..

Until we choose to create communities of individuals with integrity, respect and courage, we doom ourselves as victims. We can clean up this mess by standing up for ourselves and one another. Simply refusing to comply, walking away from "mandates" of any kind we can create the world we choose in our local area. Compassion & integrity always win.
