I see this as a great speedrunning game, and I want to see more interesting and complicated movement combinations, that more skilled people can use to go faster. It looks amazing and keep the work up man!
KEV! What a great devlog made, it's so interesting to hear where you're at with the game now, paper tech sounds really cool and I can't wait to see where you take it. I can almost imagine a boss (or just an NPC) in a library, where either it starts off or at a second stage (for a boss) and you see all these books open and all this paper come towards them unfolding to make them even bigger or to actually be the character
I watched your first devlog and was so excited by the idea, but you know how things get with youtube, it's easy to forget about things. I was so happy this popped up in my recommendations, the game is coming along so well! I've subscribed now so I won't miss any more videos, and now I'm going to go back and watch the other ones I missed! keep up the good work
Love the unfolding mechanic for the environment. Theirs nothing more cool than seeing the world unfold around you! Create that character centralization!
Here's an idea Make it possible that we can make origami creatures to help us in those levels. For example, a level so big we can't cross it or explore it unless we make a Pterosaurs/bird origami. And a speed challenge that we can't finish in time unless we make ourselves a cheetah origami companion. A boat origami for a water level. A paper plane level to test how long we can stay in the air before we land which test's the player's controlling skills. Something like this. Which implements the variety of paper uses and flexibility and make it another unique feature of the game.
Awesome work! I saw the article from 80 and now got the recommendation on youtube to watch :D Love the idea and attention to the the player feel. Also its nice to see a feel good game being made :) Keep up the great work its inspiring
This is a game with such good vibes! It's really like an adventure for the whole family. I wish you the best luck, I really liked the updates. The unfolding paper idea is awesome!
haha thanks for watching! I hope you find the demo fun, although remember that it's like 9 months old now :D So the new stuff isn't in there but it might give a somewhat sense of what the game will be!
The algorithm brought me here, and I'm gonna say this game looks cool! Idk why, but it sounds so cool when you say "Play and watch as the world unfolds" or when you open a book door you go deeper into the story. Very creative to me ngl
I saw a bit of this game and it looks pretty fun! One thing I would recommend is to have more momentum while moving around, it looks like the player moves kinda slow, which is good for normal gameplay but for people that want to speedrun it would be nice to have some techniques to gain speed, maybe after your dive or ground pound jump you will move faster but as you walk you slow down to the normal speed
I think that there should be a dedicated sprint button since it gives the player better immersion of control over the video game character, and can provide more precise control. It opens up new level design and game design possibilities with varying jump length based on speed, precise falling off platforms onto another and also other in-game variables that can be modified by the players speed in creative ways. But in my opinion the immersion of control aspect of sprinting is enough to justify sprinting in a video game where you control a player character. No wonder so many games have it as a feature, even though it seemingly doesnt make a difference, but it really does.
I think you've got a point, I'm just trying to find the balance between the amount of inputs you need to make as a player. I have young children testing the game, how much do they need to do in order to finish a level? Is it possible for them? I will keep making tests and see what happens. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts.
This is so crazy you posted this. I just finished my first animations for my character yesterday and today I am just starting working on his character controller for the first time! Thanks for uploading. Exciting to see your progress!!
The "Paper Tech" that you've shown off looks incredibly innovative. This could be your game's defining "it" factor but could potentially lead to some issues. I can see it causing some problems later in development when you want the P.T. to reveal huge map segments leading to performance issues. It could also slow down the level creation process because not only do you have to handcraft each segment of walls, floors, and roofs that need to be moved but, you'll have to redo certain areas if the P.T. motion doesn't look satisfying. However, I don't know much about your system or the rules that you created for it so I'm gonna assume it's pretty modular. Again, I think this Paper Tech could be a really strong selling point for your game. You could create really intricate levels with lots of different paths and hidden secrets that it would take players multiple playthroughs to find (this will really help replayability). This type of game feel reminds me of Little Big Planet with all the different realistic textures of materials. Leaning into this paper aesthetic you could do anything from: - Paper Boats sailing - Paper planes flying across the level - Origami creatures walking around - Having different level themes based on paper themes (Newspaper, Magazine Cutout, Old Tome/Scroll, Water Color Art, Canvas, etc.) For some game juice about the Paper Tech, you can add satisfying paper folding sounds or various paper tears (for when a monster or boss rips the level). Another small feature could be dust/paper/cardboard/scraps coming from the direction of the appearing paper (this will make the appearing paper look like it came from some magical place that has vast amounts of stuff). Some other game juice you could add: - When the player ground pounds, He displaces the ground differently depending on the material (Paper will fold/wrinkle, Cardboard will dent/squish, and felt/fabric will have a small bounce) this will make your player feel like he has weight in the world - The collectible "Coins" can have a shinier appearance. I understand that they're supposed to be buttons but they look flat and like they don't belong in the world. I think you should give them a gold or metal material/surface. Also when you collect them, there should be a small satisfying gold sparkle/twinkle like it magically entered your pocket followed by a nice coin in-bag sound (this will give the player visual and audio feedback that the coin has been added to your inventory because right now it looks like it just gets consumed). Again awesome work, You should post more about this Paper Tech.
Thank you so much for taking your time to write all this out! I 100% agree with you that this could be PaperKlay's "it" factor. And yes, there might be some performance issues if there's too much unfolding happening, I think there's a possibility where I can unfold an area and around the corner it's already up, so from the players perspective it looks like everything has unfolded. Some fun secrets could totally be used with the unfolding paper! Love that idea. I hope to keep improving the paper tech, using some of your suggestions which I really like! Thank you for the ideas!
I think "papertech" has much more potential than flavor. Turning that into a mechanic would be awesome! Something the player can input, use or influence!
Looking good, really liking the effects. Also interesting to see you figuring out your game at this stage, I have exactly the same! Just making mechanics and after months "really" digging into what the game is about and establishing a solid world! Love to see it!
you could use the paper unfolding thing to make quick reaction levels, where you have little time to react to the level as you see it unfold, and you cant stop running or the level will fold back up behind you, and you will fall.
Right? It's a small touch but I think it can do a lot. Been watching some Ratchet & Clank retrospect videos and they complain that nobody is looking at each other during cutscenes etc.
I think a spring button is essential, at least a toggle sprint, since in platformers you have to sometimes move slowly to position yourself on small platforms.
Damn, I know you from Twitch from like 2 years ago (my nickname is Sandrogo), and now you show up out of nowhere in my feed! Hail to the algorithm! PaperKlay looks awesome, I'm excited to try it out! Keep up the great work Kev! ❤
Suggestions for the Coins situation: - Spend Coins on Shortcuts in the World - Spend coins on things like "boating" or other similar open-world activities - Spend Coins on cosmetic items (just a suggestion :D) - Spend coins on closed doors that then open cool places. - Spend coins on a "store" that is in the game world somewhere, there the player can then e.g. meet other similar characters like him (Npcs) interact with them, eat coffee and cake etc. A kind of small village or street food, or whatever you want to call it. (my fav. so far)
hehe these are good suggestions, I have thought of some of these which is good. Then it's maybe a good idea :) Would be cool with different outfits for fun.
Nononononono no, It maybe is a bug that the character is turning his head so far, BUT it also looks really funny and silly. This reminds me of my 1 year old daughter who is walking past things, looking at these but continue walking. It's adorable. I don't know the personality of you character, but if it's some kind of "carefree", wholesome chicken, this could fit very well. Maybe even give it a fitting expression, as it has never seen something so interesting before. Just a thought that instantly popped to my mind.
Subscribed! Can't wait to see more. I feel like the movement speed is a bit slow right now, and might be more fun when moving faster. Might just need some additional juice as well, who knows!
I'm a game designer, and this looks great, I think it would be great if the terrain unfolding triggered by an action done by the player, making it not only a visual element but a mechanic too, this way you can use it in many sections, for example, the collectibles could be paper parts that you have to throw into certain spaces to fill them with paper, unfolding new parts of the level, or coins could even be changed for paper parts to be more thematic and unique, and these paper parts could be used to build the boat to the next level itself, this way the objective its pretty much the same but it feels more thematic and unique.
I think you have the platforming down. Its fun, smooth, and sometimes fast. You can even make collecting an item give temporary speed. But what about npc enemies? or if its non combat heavy it needs npc enemy environments that reset the player. Last thing is, all it needs is a backstory for the character, some interesting sound effects, a cute soundtrack, and definitely some npcs to make this more than just a level platformer. Games like Spyro had Moneybags, and allies around the map. You don't need a huge rpg, just a few fairytale residents in these maps.
Glad you like the platforming! Yeah there will be some enemies! :) Those things with backstory, cute audio and NPCs that you can talk with are there (but not in the video). Going to keep working on that! Ooh I like that Moneybag character in Spyro, will see if I can find some inspiration there!
i wouldn't mind having the animation being on a slower frame rate to give off the impression that you're playing through a stop motion short! Good work so far!
I love the paper unfolding thing but would love to know how it could be implemented to affect platforming gameplay as opposed to just visually unfolding as you get close. Could you try have certain colour paper that folds you into it if you stay on it for too long? Or some that can get wet and no longer solid to stand on?
Great video I love watching the updates! Great quality! I just have one very minor piece of feedback, at 7:06 when the character is gliding the model looks too dark, it may be good to have some level of ambient light always on the character model? Just my idea! I think the paper tech seems cool and there's so much you can do with it, you could have a secret level where if you fly off a random edge some paper appears (but only if you get close to it).
I played the demo version, and oh, my heart warms with every moment! I felt a cozy intimacy, yet I yearn for more. I deeply missed explanations for all the abilities and movements. Despite being immersed in this welcoming atmosphere, I still feel a pulsating void. It's as if the world I explored lacks life. Animals made of paper, butterflies dancing in the air, birds singing their gentle melodies, fish gliding in crystal-clear waters, the wind whispering through the leaves... life in all its manifestations. I long for more animated NPCs, vibrant animal lives, peaceful creatures, and the wind moving through the maps. Ah, and something I sorely missed: collectibles! I wish you would take a look at the incredible "Super Mario Odyssey." I'm certain that this inspiration will fill the stages with even more enchantment. I also miss the replay factor, the ability to explore every inch of this vast map. The more I explore, the more items and collectibles I would find, and the more life would overflow! These collectibles, or even the in-game coins, could serve as a kind of "currency," allowing us to purchase amazing outfits and special effects. Just imagine, interacting with other creatures and NPCs with special animations! Ah, and another detail I miss is the particles! We need sparkling particles in every coin, every collectible, and in all existing and future items. Every time we grab an item, a coin, we want to see magical particles shining, gleaming, enchanting our eyes! We want a true spectacle of particles! And why not add confetti as well? Imagine the stunning beauty, a true celebration of colors and life that it would bring to the game! With these additions alone, you will make the world you created even more inspiring, thrilling, and brimming with contagious energy! Beyond the particles in every item and collectible, when it comes to coins, oh, what a marvel! Each coin emitting a charming sound, echoing musical notes in the air. Do, re, mi, fa... a true concert of joy! And when you collect the coins in sequence, something magical happens. They come together in a melody, as if the game itself comes to life through music. Oh, how delightful to remember classic games like Mario, Rayman, Banjo-Kazooie, where each coin collection was a symphony of enchantment! This musical addition will further enrich the gaming experience, bringing life and a unique sonic dimension. Picture yourself diving into this vibrant world, collecting coins and creating magical melodies with your actions. It's an interactive symphony where you become the maestro of this epic adventure! This idea will elevate the game to new heights, delivering an immersive and unforgettable experience. Get ready to dance to the sound of the coins and feel your heart pulsating in harmony with the dazzling soundtrack!
Oh wow what a loveley journey you took me on! So the demo is now "old" I feel like, it doesn't fully represent the final vision I'm going for. The steps I've taken to get there so far is this video where I'm updating the controller. Next step is to start building the open levels where I can fill them with NPCs that do things instead of just standing around. I really liked hearing your vision because I have similar ideas and just working towards that! Thank you for sharing this with me!
@@WhyKev I'm delighted that you enjoyed my words, and it also makes me even more excited to see how it's coming along! One thing I really liked is the road forming like origami, and speaking of origami, having origami creatures and NPCs would enrich the experience even more. NPCs made of school supplies, I love that paper-themed concept. From your words, I can imagine it will be even better. I'm eagerly looking forward to the upcoming videos and following along with this journey. I also work in game development, albeit in the 2D field, and I'm excited to see more and witness this game further polished with new ideas, mechanics, and even better visuals. Well, thank you, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next videos to see the game come to life step by step.
Played the demo. It seems fun but it needs a key prompt to exit the demo at the end. I was pressing all the buttons on the controller and it just keeps opening webpages. Fun demo great work
Thisight be a little difficult to make but I think if you make the not completely solid unfolded paper like a bridge made of smaller floating papers respond slightly by the player landing or standing on it will look cool also maybe make those elements spawn in at a point where you can still see it but don't have to wait and can confidently know it will be there when you land
PaperKlay is looking so amazing Kev! Those fold out animations are so amazing and really make the scene come to life when you come to an object! I got to say the character looking at objects AND dynamically looking at something else is one of my favorite touches I've seen! Makes him feel like he's actually in the world and noticing what is happening around him! Keep up the amazing work man, much love! ❤
I think a reason why players want a sprint button is that it gives agency to the character. No matter the actual speed the character runs at, you want to feel like you "are" the character you're playing. 🤔
I think with paper world like that you can let player create some of it. For example let player in some minigame draw and cut out some clouds than player would see those clouds in the skies. Let a player draw a face of some enemies that are made of paper

I hope to keep improving the paper tech, using some of your suggestions which I really like!
Thank you for the ideas!
Awesome progress and really awesome platform buildup mechanics!! 🔥🔥
Appreciate it!
co op mode when?!?!?!?!
fr though im so glad i stumbled across this devlog, the game looks really fun and cute and i cant wait to play it sometime.
Saving the co-op for a spin-off game haha :D
Glad you like it! Really motivating!
FINALLY some updates! hahaha, tnkssssss, i did sub to the channel!!!
FINALLY!
I think "papertech" has much more potential than flavor. Turning that into a mechanic would be awesome! Something the player can input, use or influence!
I really want something the player can do with it, we'll see what I can do :)
Looking good, really liking the effects. Also interesting to see you figuring out your game at this stage, I have exactly the same! Just making mechanics and after months "really" digging into what the game is about and establishing a solid world! Love to see it!
haha so good to hear that! Glad I'm not alone in "finding my game" after so long time!
PaperKlay lends itself to artistic freedom. I think it would look cool to cap the framerate of the player, and enemies so that it looks stop-motion.
I tried that actually, it was cool but I think it felt a little strange when the player was stop-motion but other things could totally be it
Paper tech looks so cool, it’s definitely a main selling point
Thanks CheesyMcNuggets! I agree, will be very present when showing the game!
I love the art style !
Thank you so much Eliane! :)
you could use the paper unfolding thing to make quick reaction levels, where you have little time to react to the level as you see it unfold, and you cant stop running or the level will fold back up behind you, and you will fall.
haha I've had thoughts about this, like if there were "secrets levels" at the end for those that want that challenge.
The point of interest feature is really cool! Been playing a lot of TOTK and Link does a similar thing. It's great and make the world feel so alive
Right? It's a small touch but I think it can do a lot. Been watching some Ratchet & Clank retrospect videos and they complain that nobody is looking at each other during cutscenes etc.
really cool dude, looks beautiful
Thanks man! Glad to hear it!
I think a spring button is essential, at least a toggle sprint, since in platformers you have to sometimes move slowly to position yourself on small platforms.
That's true!
Damn, I know you from Twitch from like 2 years ago (my nickname is Sandrogo), and now you show up out of nowhere in my feed! Hail to the algorithm! PaperKlay looks awesome, I'm excited to try it out! Keep up the great work Kev! ❤
aahh look who it is! Sandrogo, I hope you've been good! Thank you so much man
Oh wow :D I didn't know you're doing devlogs on youtube. I saw your content on Twitter! Nice job, subbed
ah thanks for finding me :D Glad to have you here as well!
Just discovering this, I absolutely LOVE it
Welcome and THANK YOU :D
Suggestions for the Coins situation:
- Spend Coins on Shortcuts in the World
- Spend coins on things like "boating" or other similar open-world activities
- Spend Coins on cosmetic items (just a suggestion :D)
- Spend coins on closed doors that then open cool places.
Just found your channel! Love it!
Hey thank you so much! Welcome!
Just a thought that instantly popped to my mind.
haha we'll see if I can at least control the head a little but allow the facial expressions do a little extra from time to time :)
Your game looks great!
Thank you Tomas!
Looking great!
Thanks SilentOne
Subscribed! Can't wait to see more. I feel like the movement speed is a bit slow right now, and might be more fun when moving faster. Might just need some additional juice as well, who knows!
Nevermind, seems like the camera pull back was enough!
Nope, nevermind it was in the third section! I should stop commenting and wait until the video is done lol
haha I think that's what the majority of the viewers are doing but hey... go for it :D Appreciate the comments!
The "Paper Tech" reminds me of something Cartesian Caramel made in blender using geo nodes with that same rolling effect
Just looked it up, I think I see what you mean. Maybe I could learn a thing or two from those videos :D
I totally agree, will have so the player have to do stuff to unfold. So they feel like they're affecting stuff in the world.
Those things with backstory, cute audio and NPCs that you can talk with are there (but not in the video). Going to keep working on that!
Ooh I like that Moneybag character in Spyro, will see if I can find some inspiration there!
i wouldn't mind having the animation being on a slower frame rate to give off the impression that you're playing through a stop motion short! Good work so far!
I've done some tests, will try more and feel around I think.
love the unfolding paper
Thank you so much! :)
I love the paper unfolding thing but would love to know how it could be implemented to affect platforming gameplay as opposed to just visually unfolding as you get close. Could you try have certain colour paper that folds you into it if you stay on it for too long? Or some that can get wet and no longer solid to stand on?
That's interesting, I'll give that some thought!
Nicely done.
Thank you :)
Paper Tech is just awesome.
Thank you! :D
The really fast rotatations might be cool for a "star world" or expert post game
hehe yeah I've thought of possibilities for this. I really like the idea! We'll see what I have time for :D
Thanks a ton! Yeah you're right, it's quite dark.
I like the idea of a secret level! :)
@@mafagafizar Oh yeah I've plans for "fun" characters in terms of their personality and also how they look, what they're made out of!
Played the demo. It seems fun but it needs a key prompt to exit the demo at the end. I was pressing all the buttons on the controller and it just keeps opening webpages. Fun demo great work
Thanks for trying it! Yeah I should either remove the old demo or update it at some point
So charming it feels like something from PS3 era Media Molecule
I love this comment!
Thisight be a little difficult to make but I think if you make the not completely solid unfolded paper like a bridge made of smaller floating papers respond slightly by the player landing or standing on it will look cool also maybe make those elements spawn in at a point where you can still see it but don't have to wait and can confidently know it will be there when you land
hmm I might play around with that! Great suggestion!
this looks like paper mario Origami king and I love how everything fits to be a platformer
Thank you thank you! :)
nice job, awesome
Thanks a lot :)
Thank you so much Carbs! I agree, it's something special!
Right, looking at objects is a very nice touch :D
Much love friend
this remember Control's Oldest House live enviroments, but with paper
Oh I will totally look that up for inspiration!
I think a reason why players want a sprint button is that it gives agency to the character. No matter the actual speed the character runs at, you want to feel like you "are" the character you're playing. 🤔
hmm yeah I can see that. I guess I'll play around with different ideas and see what people think. I mean it's working in Mario right?
I think with paper world like that you can let player create some of it.
For example let player in some minigame draw and cut out some clouds
than player would see those clouds in the skies.
Let a player draw a face of some enemies that are made of paper
Sounds like a lot of work haha, but it's a cool idea for sure! :D
@@WhyKevThere is a game called "Tearaway" and sequel to it "Tearaway Unfolded"
This is a game where the whole world is made out of paper and it's 3D platformer with some unique mechanics.
You can check this game out for some inspiration :)
Great
Thank you!
You should make like the sun be a giant spot light like the game is a huge stop motion video
That would be a great idea!
you need a boss thats one of those paper fortune tellers with each side being another attack just a thought 💯
haha that's pretty funny!
Could you have coins or another collectable be for cosmetic changes like hats or his parachute?
I'm actually thinking if I know how to achieve that. Some other skins etc.
So cute!!
hehe thank you!
This reminds me of a kids version of Conkers Bad Fur Day.
hahaha yeah I can see that! Great game btw!
