Making an Edwardian Ribbon Corset

  • Ribbon corsets were a popular option for light weight support between the late 1890s and early 1920s. They were often advertised as well suited for more athletic and active endeavors, as they were thin, breathable, and had very light structure. Their shape is also deceptively simple- only two panels per side actually have any shape to them. In comparison to the standard S-bend corset of the 1900s, they offer a much easier patterning.
Most commonly these corsets can be found made of silk satin ribbon in a light color. However, advertisements mention a wide array of colors that were available! A few examples even survive with striped, floral, or other decorative ribbons. I chose to go with an antique silk satin that was in my collection, but vintage rayon satins would also do very well! The key is whatever ribbon you use, it needs to be strong and stable enough to hold up to the tension. Ideally, you want a ribbon around 2.5"/63mm, though up to 3"/76mm would do well. After that, you may need to fold back edges to get the ideal width.
While it seems that the most common versions of this style are underbust, there are a few versions that have longer fronts and a few gathered ribbons at the top edge which may have offered a minimal amount of bust support. I really recommend taking a look at the vast array of examples in museums if you're interested in other styles! Modern ribbon corsets are also very popular and you can find more about them at the two sites I mention in the video:

The choice of ribbon makes this corset look likes it's spun out of gold, and wearing it with dark pants and a white top makes you look like both the pirate *and* the treasure!
I'd never heard of ribbon corsets before, delighted to be learning new things (and of course, now I want one!). :)

In a romance novel when the girl is like "I'm not vain and I love exercising" I wish she would have a ribbon corset (or whatever period-appropriate lightly boned garment), I'm so bored of the "the author is feminist so the heroine doesn't wear a corset" trope.

CJ Archer has a few historical romances with female leads. I know Charlie from Ministry of Curiosities series, prefers not to wear a corset but does reluctantly wear one by the end of the first book.

@@brissygirl4997 I think CJ Arthur is a woman? Anwyas, I read tons of historical romances that are written by women who misunderstand women's fashion history, it's a symptom of the larger problem of historical fiction misunderstanding women's history and thinking you need a heroine to be anachronistic to be strong or empowered. The quote "Well-behaved women rarely make history" is actually about how regular women deserve to be remembered too, how you shouldn't need to run off and do "man things" to be remembered.
That said there has been a trend recently to write "heroines" whose reluctance to conform with fashion or gender norms is actually indicative of explicit Gender Stuff rather than just like a "cool girl" thing and I am Here For That.

Those were different pictures than the ones published super accessibly. Watching this there was something scritching at the back of my brain. I'm embarrassed to say I got through this twice before it surfaced. This is very like the Herve Leger bandage dresses. All by engineering the dress.

This is absolutely gorgeous. The closeups of hand stitching with accompanying piano music are lovely and soothing. But I wish that you would do a little more describing of what you're doing during construction, the way you do during drafting. There was no narration between the busk insertion at 16:45 and the discussion of extra boning channels at 20:16, and especially at around 19:00, with the layers of ribbon and coutil, it is a bit hard to tell what's going on. Even a mention of which part you're sewing at the beginning of each new section would help. I had to go back and watch it again, because at first I was confused as to which parts were lined and which weren't and how the horizontal ribbons were attached to the vertical pieces.
But thank you again for a breathtakingly beautiful and inspiring video.

I started out by flat drafting corsets, because pictures of patterns from books were all the resources I had, way back when (maybe 20 years ago) and then switched to draping on a dressform modified to my goal measurements (I had no idea, draping was even a thing, mind you. It was just a spontaneous idea I had)
It was so much easier, to get the desired fit and style lines like that.
I would love, to see someone more professional/knowledgeable try and compare both methods side by side though. Especially for something more complicated, than a simple 5 or 6 panel corset, with vertical style lines.

Separate bust supporters were also becoming a thing during that time frame (at least they were based on late 1890s patents I looked through when searching for corset patents).

I assume this would be more popular with those who don't need as much support

Yes to all these replies! Another option would be a bust bodice, which was a lightly boned garment made to shape the bust but not support it! One could theoretically wear an under bust corset with a chemise fitted at the bust and add padding and/or a bust bodice and/or a ruffled corset cover to achieve the fashionable pigeon breasted silhouette.

I am so glad you made this. I’ve had the links bookmarked and the vintage silk moire ribbon in my stash for 2+ years, and been too scared! It was going to be my first corset and I just felt kinda lost.
Also damn that teens corset is awesome

She is so precious and lovely. I love how I have gotten two corset videos today. I have to make a regency and a victorian and I have not been looking forward to it, but maybe this is a way to dip my toes in and get in the mood.

Bernadette banner and Morgan Donner also have some basic sewing tutorials if you want to get started. Bernadette Banner has a basic one about sewing machine though she's talking specifically about her literal vintage Victorian machines the basic principles are the same and that may make it less intimidating to you. Good luck

Such a BEAUTIFUL garment. (It would make it more time-consuming, but maybe somebody could buy thinner satin ribbons and weave them together into wider strips. This would add color variations and texture to gleaming satin. It would also make it stronger, I would think.)

Maybe you should put words like "easy" and "beginner" and "modern" in the description or tags, I am starting out making corsets and would never have thought to look for something this specific because I didn't know it existed til this moment. Edit: also yay a new video!! I was very taken by the ribbon corset in your last video so to see a full tutorial is awesome!

Impressive! I must admit, after sewing a victorian-inspired male corset in six (dramatically shaped) panels per half, the idea to make one with three... basically rectangles and two dramatic shapes made out of ribbon only cut on the edges is... quite appealing! Maybe an idea for this summer/autumn, we shall see!
