fun fact: the lucifer dance practice was posted because fans were so intrigued by how hard it was that they wanted to see it better. due to them releasing this rehearsal, the culture around kpop dance practice releases being a major part of a comeback was formed!!! (a dance practice for replay also was released back then and it's simply the cutest thing in existence)

i've heard that Dream Girl is the reason they have limits on the weekly music show wins per comeback? Because SHINee just kept winning with it, so they decided to limit it xD

    • @Lena-zn4re
      @Lena-zn4re 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Yep, Show Champion created a rule limiting music show wins to 3 wins per comeback because Shinee was winning too many times.

      @Pos1t1veThinking 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

yeah, Inkigayo always had the triple crown system (after 3 wins you get a special prize and are taken out of the competition), but Show Champion apparantly added it after Shinee got their 4th win. Music Bank is I think the only music shows that still allows a song to win as many times as it can.

They did perform Dream Girl live with mic stands. In fact, on one of the music shows they did an iconic performance where one of the mic stands broke in the middle of the song, but you wouldn't actually notice it unless you were really paying attention because of the smooth and professional way they handled it. Their synchronicity is amazing in this video (th-cam.com/video/AZh355py1Kw/w-d-xo.html), where you can see Minho's mic stand break, Key casually pocket a broken piece of the stand, Jonghyun kick the pole part to a corner, and Onew sliding the base of the mic stand out of the way while incorporating the move into the choreography. In the end, Jonghyun sings without a mic stand in the middle even though he would normally have one, as though they had rehearsed it like that. Their professionalism never ceases to amaze me! 😂
    Thanks for the reaction!

kkkk and don't forget that Taemin didn't notice anything like always kkk the same with the staff, I think once at a show Jonghyun said that the members knew each other so well that they didn't need words to communicate, I think it was when Onew was X men and all the members knew about it at the first moment so the presenter asked how they knew , I think until today this was the fastest discovery of the show every time I remember I can't stop laughing, it was on the same show that they needed to incorporate another member and Taemin and Onew imitating Jonghyun and Key it was so funny they did it perfectly, if I'm not wrong Key was Taemin, Jonghyun was Onew, and Taemin and Onew were so damn good

"Lucifer" came out in 2010, more than 10 years ago, so this was just the look that a lot of MVs had back then. Just take a look at TVXQ, Super Junior, Infinite or 2PM MV, etc. from around that time and you will see a similar look and style. SHINee was setting trends in the industry with 'Lucifer." LOL I'm not sure why people are often so thrown by their hairstyles and outfits in this MV. :D I think they are actually all pretty cool for doing something different that sets them apart from everyone else in the industry. And that is what makes SHINee legends and why "Lucifer" is such an iconic song and dance. You're not going to remember a group or a song if they look and sound the same as everyone else, you remember them for standing out and not being afraid to be unique.
Key is our diva and fashionista of the group who is SHINee's stylist for a lot of their MVs and stage outfits. And SHINee are known for setting trends and never being afraid to experiment with their sound or look, so Key's head was 100% really shaved bald. What you see is his head has been shaved all the way down to his scalp. He is known for always being unique and wanting to stand out. That's why Key's style is often just straddling the edge of outrageous, but somehow always manages to look cool.
This was also the era where Taemin had long hair and it made him one of the most popular of the members at the time, especially with their Japanese fans. The Japanese culture really embraces men with long hair and the members said that he was one of the most popular at the time because of his style. Taemin with long hair is so iconic and many in the fandom were really sad when he eventually cut his hair. When Taemin debuted as a member of SHINee in 2008 he was only 14 years old, so in "Lucifer" he is only about 16.
In the "Lucifer" MV the SHINee members don't have superpowers, but the "smoke" or "light trail" you see is supposed to represent the aura of a girl who has devilish powers like Lucifer, who is trying to possess them and take over their lives. As the English lines in the song say, "Loveaholic, robotronic ... her whisper is the Lucifer." (They are using auto tune because they are supposed to be "robotronic"-ly controlled by the girl who is "The Lucifer." So the auto tune is meant to make them sound robotic.) So, in other words, the women or girl they are talking about is so desirable that she is like Lucifer and you have to use all your willpower just to resist her wiles. In the MV you see them trying to fight against her powers and resist her attempts to try to make them bend to her will, etc. That's why in the choreography you see all the robotic moves because they are showing how "Lucifer" is trying to control them like a robot -- for example, they put their wrists together like they are being handcuffed to show how she is trapping them. And they vibrate to show how they are being manipulated by "Lucifer" and they are trying to resist her powers, etc. (FYI: That vibration you saw them do is 100% them actually shaking like that, there aren't any camera tricks. If you pay attention when they perform Lucifer live, you will see them do that exact same thing. :D)
LOL we have no idea why they had to be dancing in front of a sports car, but that was kind of an iconic thing that Kpop companies did back then in a lot of their MVs, The group would dance around a fancy car to showoff their coolness and to give the video a more futuristic, expensive looking aesthetic.
If you want to see where SHINee truly shines you have to check out their iconic performance of "Lucifer" Live in concert. Check out their performance at their SHINee World Concert III (SWC3) in Seoul, th-cam.com/video/Fm5n8Q2XO34/w-d-xo.html. Or their performance of "Ring Ding Dong" and "Lucifer" at their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5), th-cam.com/video/WlnfJbEwsyw/w-d-xo.html. This is a perfect example of how you can tell they are singing live and killing it every time. SHINee doesn't need auto tune, and if you hear them perform the song live, they often don't use it.
I'm telling you, you really need to see their official concert performances.
"Lucifer" is actually known as one of the most difficult songs and dances to cover because of its tutting and popping and for the fact that it has a very fast paced beat with dance moves that are very sharp and precise which are designed to hit every beat of the song. And the song itself is very complicated with the songs wide range of notes and flow.
Many amateurs have thought "Lucifer" looks like one of SHINee's more simple songs and dances. But the minute they try to sing the song and/or dance the choreography, they soon discover that it is way more complicated than they thought. It only looks and sounds simple, because SHINee makes it look that way. th-cam.com/video/0V02cQwYLMQ/w-d-xo.html. Check out this clip of SHINee teaching a group of actors and comedians "Lucifer" as part of a challenge on the variety show "Invincible Baseball Team." It's funny because when they came to meet SHINee to start the practice, Jonghyun asked them why they chose this song of all songs, and they said because it looks manly and they thought it was fairly easy to cover. But the first thing Jonghyun said to them, while laughing, was "oh no, actually it's one of our more difficult choreography and it took us extra time to really perfect it." :D

You should check out the dance practice next. SHINee's "Lucifer" dance practice was the very first dance practice video ever released specifically for fans. SHINee is the group that started the trend and they are why dance practice videos are even a thing today. :D It was the very first dance practice video to go viral. Back then dance practice videos were filmed for the group and artists to watch to help them remember the moves and to fix mistakes, etc. They weren't intended for a mass audience. But SM realized that fans were starting to try and copy SHINee's choreography and they decided to film a dance practice and release it to the public. SHINee's dance practice videos became so popular that other companies and groups started to follow suite and show off their choreography by releasing dance practices too.

Taemin's long hair were extensions though, if I remember correctly. And at the time Taemin absolutely hated them; he was really struggling with the idea of having a feminine side/look and had some toxic masculinity still ingrained in him (thanks in big part to society, sadly). Fortunately it wasn't something he really projected on others but mostly only on himself. Thank god the other members, especially Jonghyun and Key, helped him let go of that and embrace his femininity/androgyny.

Fun fact: Sherlock brings so much flavor to the industry because at that time we don't really see choreography with that so many dynamics (they use the center, left, and right side of the stage, along with the ripple effects in their moves). It is said to be the most expensive choreography SM paid for. Sherlock is also a hybrid song (mixed from two songs called Clue and Note) and it's also a very rare thing to do even now! Sherlock was the first SHINee's comeback after 2 years of hiatus due to their Japanese debut and activities after they release Hello so that's why they put "SHINee's back" at the intro of their song and it has become an iconic thing ever since!

    @offthesidelines 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

"Isn't it so funny how different things are in trend and they come and go."
Shinee legit started new trends in South Korea almost every time they had a comeback: they brought RnB, EDM, dubstep and house (among other genres of music) into kpop, started a colorful skinny jeans fad, brought back the retro 80s-90s, were the first to release a kpop dance practice video (Lucifer - look it up if you have the time) that then went viral and prompted other groups to now regularly release their own dance practices too... and I'm probably forgetting many other things too.
You could also say that they somewhat lead the second wave of k-music back into Japan; Boa and TVXQ, a female solo singer and a male group who are also Shinee/Exo/etc's labelmates and seniors at SM, were the ones who successfully kicked the doors wide open to the Japanese industry. Boa, TVXQ and Shinee are so popular, respected and well-liked over there that some Japanese people even mistakenly think that they're Japanese (or forget that they're Koreans) lol.

SHINee's "Dream Girl" came out in 2013. The song is called "Dream Girl" so the whole MV is a dream sequence. That is why the set looks like the room has been tipped on its side. It's also why the one set has the floor behind them and it looks like they are dancing on the walls. That's why you see the video glitches and why they are jumping and falling from the ceilings and walls and why you see Onew roll down the wall, etc.
In case you need a visual reference: Key is the blond wearing the red jacket and the black and white flower pants, Onew has the red/burgundy hair with the green pants and the flowered shirt, Minho has the tan pants and the rainbow striped shirt (Fun fact: Minho is always the one that says "SHINee's back" in any of their songs or live performance.) Jonghyun has on a grey plaid jacket and tan plaid pants and Taemin is in the yellow. Their outfits are mismatched patterns and styles -- and Taemin's pants look like two No. 2 pencils (pink eraser, green metal band and yellow pencil) -- because it's a dream and not everything has to make sense in a dream. (This was another of SHINee's very iconic looks, and it's one of the things that makes SHINee, SHINee.)
You can't see the girl's face because she is a "dream girl." It doesn't matter what she looks like because Shawols are SHINee's dream girls. So the girl represents all their fans. That is why all the scenes are the way they are because it's a dream so anything can happen.
You should really check out their live stage for "Dream Girl" -- the mic stand choreography is legend and, like SHINee, it was so unique for its time and unlike anything anyone had done up until then. Just another example of what makes SHINee pure greatness and why they are considered one of the best when it comes to their vocals and dancing. :D
There is even an iconic moment in one of their MCountdown comeback stages for "Dream Girl" where Minho's mic stand breaks in the middle of the dance and the way they all improvised and kept on dancing just shows how skilled and professional they are. Check out an episode of the variety show Beatles Code 2 where they talk about it. I love this episode of the show because it has so many iconic SHINee moments. I think you will enjoy watching it. Part 1: th-cam.com/video/8RmY4_kFDes/w-d-xo.html and Part 2: th-cam.com/video/vdhyeOz9Yj8/w-d-xo.html (Just so you know, the other guests on the show are members of the iconic first generation boy group GOD and Shindong from Super Junior is one of the hosts of the show. The concept of this variety show is The Beatles "Yellow Submarine" theme. So that is why the hosts are dressed the way they are, they are supposed to look like the members of The Beatles.)

That's SHINee for you, pure greatness. And pretty much no one will argue with you on that fact. LOL :D "Sherlock" is a special song that combines 2 songs from SHINee's album "Clue" and "Note." That's why the title of this MV is "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" If you were to listen to the album you would see that they are two separate songs, but when combined they become "Sherlock." So, in the MV you hear the mashup of the two songs. (Just like with SuperM's new song "One (Monster & Infinity)")
In the MV the boys are Sherlock-like detectives who are looking for clues in the spooky mansion. And yes, tThe 'ghost" girl -- who is played by Jessica Jung, the former member of Girls Generation -- is helping SHINee solve a mystery by leaving them clues. At the end they realize that the girl they have been seeing and chasing after all day is actually the girl that was originally involved in the mystery when they find an article talking about her from from 1910 and they discover that they must have been seeing a ghost.
Fun fact: As you noticed, the brand name on the computer was iWatson. Like Sherlock Holmes' sidekick Watson. The computer helped SHINee solve the mystery.

And, yet again, this was the era of Taemin with long hair. Although, in the MV, Taemin's really long hair was a wig. If you notice he only has long straight hair during the dance breaks, but during the story sections his hair is much shorter and kind of curly. However, he really did grow his hair long for a while. Taemin with long hair is one of his most iconic looks. I didn't really like Taemin's wig look, but Taemin with naturally long hair is one of my favorites. (He is actually known for making girls jealous because his hair is so perfect.) Many people thing that Taemin with long hair made him look pretty like a girl, but I actually thing it's kind of a masculine look on him. "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" came out in 2012 -- 4 years after "Reply." So Taemin is now 17 in this MV.
Taemin's hairstyle also made him one of the most popular of the members with their Japanese fans. This was the era of when SHINee really started to solidify themselves as Japanese artists, so Taemin's look had Japanese fans gravitating to them. (SHINee debuted in Japan in 2011 and now they are considered one of the most popular artists in Japan. They are so popular that they are part of the mainstream music scene and most Japanese citizens don't even consider them foreign artists. They spend about 50% of their career in Japan, so they are fluent in Japanese and they have just as many Japanese albums and songs as they do Korean. They don't just remake Japanese versions of their Korean songs, but they produce songs exclusively for their Japanese albums as well.)
The choreography for "Sherlock" was created by Tony Testa a very well-known "Hollywood"-famous American choreographer who has also worked with some of the most famous artists, productions and dancers in the world, including Michael Jackson. "Sherlock" was the first time SM (or pretty much anyone in the Kpop industry) had ever used a famous choreographer, and at the time, it was the most expensive Kpop production ever. Once again, SHINee were trendsetters and because of SHINee's skill level, SM became the first to see the value in using a well-known choreographer to help create their dances and to strive for a level of choreography and video production that surpassed anything that had ever been done before. Today it's common place for Kpop companies to have really famous in-house choreographers, and to seek out people in the industry who are really making a name for themselves to choreograph for them, but SHINee was one of the first.
If you want to see the choreography for "Sherlock" better you should check out SHINee's "Sherlock" dance practice video and the performance version MV, or better yet, one of their live concert performances of "Sherlock." I recommend their SHINee World Concert IV (SWC4) in Seoul from 2015. th-cam.com/video/M4pINahBoRY/w-d-xo.html

Yup, "Lucifer" was released in 2010 and is just iconic. From the styling, to the sound, to the choreo, to Jonghyun's long note, to its impact on K-pop (the 1st dance practice video). To me, it's just a hype train whenever I listen to it XD
Yup, that's how you pronounce Onew.
Aw man, after skipping out on promotions in 2011, they came back in 2012 with "Sherlock" and boy was that iconic. Musically, it was experimental since it kind of combined their two B-sides, "Clue" and "Note", into one song, For choreo, it was SM's most expensive since I believe they hired Michael Jackson's choreographer for it.
10:53 I think the same thing about OnlyOneOf's Junji LOL (Funny story, when OnlyOneOf covered "Sherlock" on the Dancing Idol special, Shindong even mentioned how he resembled Taemin from the time, as can be seen in this MV XD)
14:27 Yup, she was the world's most beautiful girl in 1910 XD
Ah, "Dream Girl". Taemin really had a glow-up, from practically a non-vocalist at debut, to main vocalist levels here, to soloist at the top of the industry :') I think there's a live stage story where one of the mic stands broke, and they just smoothly kicked the broken piece off the stage
Btw, not sure if you've already recorded the reaction/if you will be recording it, but if/when you get to "Why So Serious?" you will notice there are 4 members. That's because Jonghyun just got injured and his schedule was too busy so he couldn't record the song and MV with the others. (Though the OT5 version of the song was recorded and released eventually)

"Hello" was also released in 2010 -- 2 years after debut. SHINee's look in their "Hello" MV is totally the boyfriend look. In this MV they are supposed to be dressed like boyfriends. The story is how they are trying to work up the courage to say hello to the girl they like and to ask her to be their girlfriend. :D Jonghyun is sitting on the step waiting for the girl to come home and he has a gift in a box, Key has a ring, Onew has flowers, Taemin -- because he is only 16 in this MV -- has that plushy that he is decorating for the girl he likes and Minho has a giant teddy bear in the passenger seat of his car. LOL
It's a pretty simple story about just being brave enough to say hello.
So in this MV, Onew and Jonghyun were 20, Key and Minho were 18 and Taemin was 16.
Jonghyun with that little girl is so precious. If you want to see more of SHINee and Jonghyun with little kids you should check out the reality show SHINee did called "Hello Baby." It was a show where the members of SHINee spent several weeks raising a little 3 year old boy and they were supposed to be his surrogate "Appas" (fathers). It's extremely cute and you can find episodes of the show with English Subs on TH-cam. All the members of SHINee are actually really great dad material and they all have a soft spot for little kids -- although little children kind of make Onew nervous sometimes, LOL. You should also see Minho when he spends time with little kids, it will make your heart melt. Check out th-cam.com/video/yX0mpQ0_UZQ/w-d-xo.html where Minho spends the day with 3 of the kids who are on the reality show "Return of Superman." or the episode of "Return of Superman" where Minho takes one of the cast member's kids on a trip to China. th-cam.com/video/cFz5R9jFY1M/w-d-xo.html I can't stop smiling when SHINee interacts with little kids. SHINee are going to be such great dads someday -- their kids are going to be so lucky to have them as their dad.

Lucifer is one of the most famous and iconic SHINee (and kpop in general) song - I actually got hooked to SHINee when they released it (I knew their stuff before it, but Lucifer was that song - and album especially that got me into them). I adored Hello - it was the title song for repackage of Lucifer - it also made me fall in love with Onew and he's still my SHINee bias. Sherlock choreography is probably one of the best SHINee choreographies and it was again a huge hit. I feel like Dream Girl wasn't as popular, but it was still great. I'm loving this SHINee journey, I hope you'll check out some of their solo stuff... And with all the boys (minus Taemin) being out of the army now I hope we'll soon get a comeback too. I left a Jonghyun appreciation video (like his impact on the industry) on discord - it's sad and super special, so I hope you'll check it out :)

Wow. Watching you reacting to old SHINee videos chronologically really made me go down the memory lane with SHINee. I discovered them during RDD (and became a Shawol) and had my first comeback of SHINee with Lucifer. I had the poster of Lucifer album on my wall for 10 years before I brought it down to change with Seventeen. Though I still have other SHINee's poster on my wall with Seventeen. 😁
But thank you for reacting to SHINee, my first ever stan group. They make me a proud Shawol all these years and more to come. ❤️

As a fan since '09, it's wild how impactful Lucifer was at that time - especially in terms of style. It really was iconic. Which is why it feels particularly strange to look back and realize how dated it seems now. Still, there's a part of it that retains that original 'newness' for me. I suspect people will definitely feel the same about current songs and trends in ten years - especially those who were there to experience them in the moment. It's definitely a strange (but enjoyably nostalgic) feeling! Thank you for your reactions to SHINee!

I remember I saw posts a few months ago about SHINee's Lucifer comeback stage back then in 2010, they sang live and people didn't believe it because they sound exactly the same with the studio version. SHINee were the 1st on search ranking and people were posting videos of their MR removed version of the stages. People were honestly shook.

Also, Shinee member - Jonghyun (who passed away in 18.12.17) wrote a song for Lee Hi called ‘Breathe’. Check out the English lyrics. Also her tribute performance (she was wearing black) to him (special stage at the 32nd Golden Disc Awards 11.01.18) where she broke down in the middle - audience reaction and how she somehow managed to pick herself up and get through it.

SHINee has been such an iconic group since debut! Lucifer and Sherlock were huge at the time they came out and have stood the passage of time pretty well imo.
Maybe do TVXQ after SHINee to compare early second gen SME groups? That could be a fun project.

Lucifer choreo is pretty iconic indeed, actually before hard dancing wasn't common in kpop groups, they weren't respected like "real dancers". SHINee with this performance was the first step into changing that, because they made hard choreos mainstream and that leads to what we know today, hard choreos now are common and actually a big part of kpop.
Also the choreo for Sherlock was the most expensive that sm paid (I don't know if that still remains true) but it was pretty important back then.
For Dream Girl they performed with the mic stands, in of the show stages one of the stands broke and they made an amazing team work, if you don't look closely you may not even notice!

Also can recall absolutely begging my parents to let me get cheetah print pants like Taemin's in Hello LOL (they said no). Its looking like emotional nostalgia hours for me now.... thanks so much for this reaction, I didn't know how much I needed it.

Lucifer!!!!!!! Saw it the day it came out and fell in love with Shinee!!!!!!!! Still love this song so much!!!!!! I also think it was the first time we had 360 cameras in kpop!
And loooool dunno why, people on the webs at the time were research who was the first with shave part hairstyle, Key or Jay Park XD Taemin with long hair was my phone wallpaper for months XD
Hello and the return of coconut hair for Taemin XD
Sherlock was the first kpop song that combined 2 different songs: Clue and Note. It so weird to hear them separately XD
My god, those ads that SM had in the mv, everyone hated them! XD
Everyone was dancing the chorus XD Also for Lucifer.
With dream girl, they broke some of those mic props while dancing XD And the pencil pants!!!!! Iconic!
All the songs are AMAZING!!!!!! ALSO THE ALBUMS ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!!
Shinee brought lots of firsts into kpop

    yay more shinee
yes their hair was wild lucifer era lol and dream girl era had wild outfits too
about dreamgirl, yes they do that with the mic stands live and it's so great. technically dreamgirl & later it was supposed to be "nightmare" to be connected, they are both parts of a trilogy called albums called the misconceptions albums & nightmare was supposed to be the title track after dreamgirl it was the darker take of the story in a way, but Jonghyun at the time had a car accident and broke his nose so they had to chose another title track and they chose why so serious, that song mv has only four of them without Jonghyun because at the time he was still recovering and they had a tight schedule, but he sings with them live and he is in the album
anyway dreamgirl is from the album called (misconceptions of me), the albums after it is called (misconceptions of you) & the third part is called the misconceptions of us; by that year shinee truly found their sound & they started to have more fun in general and they started to experiment more in music
I can't wait till you see everybody & married to the music. again thank you for your reaction

What I love about the 2nd generation is I know exactly whose song is whose. Shinee's songs don't sound like anyone else. Infinite's songs don't sound like anyone else. Big Bang is all on their own. Where as kpop continues everyone seems to follow the trend the songs and groups seem to blend together. Of course, there are exceptions and there are newer groups that I absolutely adore but 2nd gen is just so pristine in my opinion.
