Good choice happy you kept the XR. Good Channel love all the research you do. I just bought a 2021 XR650L . reason was to replace my CRF250L for lack of power on the freeway.
I Am 5ft 8in, weigh 150 pounds, 53 years old. Been wanting and XR over 20 years but everybody complains about the height and the weight and the soft suspension and been second-guessing myself. First ride today on my new XR and proved to myself that most everyone on TH-cam is most likely lacking experience. I've been riding since I was 18 years old and currently own five bikes. 1100 Shadow, 1200 Harley, 675 Triumph Daytona, CRF250L. First thing I noticed of course was the power which I definitely love especially after riding all my other big bikes. Second thing I noticed was how light and Nimble it feels even compared to my CRF250 probably because of the off-road design and extra power. As for the height I believe I will leave it alone and get used to it as it has not been that much of a problem so far. Even at 5 foot 8 in it is perfect for my style. I'm a mountain biker Runner hiker, hunter weight lifter, that might have something to do with it. Keep your body in shape if you notice all Motocross Riders have great physiques, short or tall. Great channel

Hi Gilbert. Thank you for the support and congrats on the XR! You made the right choice. You are 100% correct...there is nothing wrong with the bike. It is way lighter than most other 650 singles and has better suspension than most, but you need to know what you are doing (and be strong and fit) to ride it the way it was intended.
I am also a runner and do some mountain biking to keep fit and hone my skills. But I need to work on my core strength and flexibility... both of which I've neglected for way too long and paying the price now (at 40!). I know I need to work on that (and my dirt riding skills) before I will fully enjoy the bike. I love learning though.

I am on the short side so the seat was an issue for me on both bikes BUT the XR is like a tractor...you can lug it all day long and it just takes it the DRZ was not as tractor like. so some may not want that low end stuff but it is perfect for this 60 year old :)..gladd you are keeping it

Hilarious! I went through the same exact mental gymnastics with these two bike! Ended up sticking with the XRL, which is my second XRL. Don't think you can go wrong with either choice, but the simplicity and aftermarket options...and cult following, for the XRL are outstanding! I do all my own maintenance, and I find the XRL to be a joy to work on. One other thing worth noting: I occasionally like to take the wife on relaxing rides on dirt/4wd roads, and some trails. This is where I really appreciate the XRL torque at low rpms! If I need a fix in the fast technical terrain, I go to my lightweight, Beta 300. But if I had to give up one, it would be the less versatile 300.

  • @lifeoff-road280

I have a DRZ400 and love it. As much as I enjoy the low-end torque of the XR650 (It is HILARIOUSLY fun), it's heaviness and height make it a bull to pick up in the dirt. It is better suited to tall riders (6ft/180cm and above).
The DRZ is already heavy enough to pick up, and since with a few mods it can put out as much power or more than the XR, then the DRZ is the choice for me. If I can only have one bike, the DRZ. But if I can have 2, then probably an XR650 or DR650 for longer trips, and a smaller dirt bike (250-350cc) for ripping around trails.

As someone who has owned all of the 650 dual sports and trained students offroad on the honda 250L. The small dual sports are amazing. So much easier on the aging body. However, you do lose the torque and highway smoothness. Where I live the trails are a minimum of 30 miles away on twisty beautiful paved roads. So i'm willing to work harder off-road for the better road manners. I currently own a heavily modded DR650 to make it behave off-road like XR650L. I will definitely go smaller as I get older. Currently 33 and those 300cc dualsports are looking really really tempting.

That was my thinking too. I just hit 40 and it is as if my body suddenly decided to punish me for any foolishness. I refuse to give in and just have to get stronger (and a better rider if I am keeping the XR650L!)🤣

I have both the xr and dr. I far prefer my dr to the xr. Where I live it's not open desert woops and ruts. It is tight and twisty stuff. The lower center of gravity on the dr is very noticeable compared to the xr which feels every pound of its top heaviness- even though the dr is significantly heavier.

I know it's been three years but, if you wait a little longer, it looks like the DR-Z400 will be available with fuel injection (and hopefully a 6th gear) for the 2025 year.
Basically, it will be a better choice than the Kawasaki and Honda 300's.
I also wish Yamaha would make the XT a 350 or at least a 325.

Drz400 is very user friendly. All the controls on the bike are perfect. The bike feels great. D606’s can decrease on highway riding enjoyment. And you’ll always be looking for that 6th gear if you do any extended highway riding. It’s a very nice machine for its age. I love it. If you don’t do 80+mph on the highway it’s perfect. I road the dr650 and was disappointed. Next up is a test of the xr650l. I have hopes it will be for me. If not then back onto a drz it is. Stay safe out there.

Ive had two XL500R's, it got to a point where I had to make a decision, - either to stop throwing money at the last one (a 1982 one - my first one was a 1984), or to get something more modern. At 60 yrs old something I felt I'm getting too old to kick start the 500R, so something with an electric start. I've just bought a 2012 XR650L, and I am loving it to say the least. Suzuki has never disappointed they make an incredible motorcycle all around. And I think you did a a great job of comparing the two bikes. However you really just cannot compare the two unless you're just talking about off-road. As soon as you're on the road there's just no comparison. You could potentially take an XR across the country if you are motivated enough. I would not want to do it on that 400. The amazing thing is they're both outstanding motorcycles and you couldn't go wrong either way :-) I'm heading out for my first ride of the spring today shout-out from Colorado!

Make some mods to your XR and you will be SO much happier!!! I noticed you haven't done anything to it yet. Since you drop it a lot, get a drop link for the suspension and raise your forks just a little. Since its so hot there, get a Sutton aftermarket oil cooler. Increase your range with a 4.7 gal Clark Tank. Almost everything you mentioned can be addressed with a few mods. The XR is a bullet proof beast and I think you would miss it in the long run. Aloha, I got a XR650L in 2006 and loved it! The height, the power, easy maintenance. Rode it for six years. I had same challenge with trail rides and dropping it! It's top heavy and I'm 5'8", so hard to reach ground. I wish I kept it! Fast forward to my new 2020SM Supermoto. I put 75 miles on it and I'm loving my new ride! Started to add upgrades and can't wait to get her dialed in and on the road! If I had the option to have both bikes I would keep the two! That way I have the power of the XR650L Dual Sport on the trails and the handling of my DR-Z 400SM on the road! Good luck with your choice. 👍

I'm 5'3 and 150 pounds. I ride mine all through the mountains and single track and my bike is not lowered. I even take my girl on the back through single track. Once you get better tires you will see the difference. I run kenda 270 5.10 in rear and 3.25 in the front. I can lay it down far on asphalt turns comfortably and it handles great on stone roads or dirt. Look into a fork brace at some point. Makes a huge difference in the front. You won't be constantly correcting the front wheel. I was gonna get a 400 and instead got another 650. I rode the 400. Hey, just a fan of the dirt riding, I thought Id mention a couple of things as Ive had about 10 years experience as an adventure/hard enduro rider. At first glance, your Honda 650l (and the drz400) doesn't look "set up" correctly for you personally, to ride in the dirt. It takes some time and effort to have a bike correctly set up from a factory or stock form and it genuinely makes a huge difference when it is done correctly. Simply changing the tyres, ride height, suspension and levers will significantly change your riding ability. The 650 may definitely be too big for tight trails and crazy hill climbs, but you may experience the same problems on your drz. Just food for thought, I personally ride a 300cc two stroke bike (which is a whole different world) for trail/hard enduro riding but this wont be suitable for a long adventure riding with heaps of highway riding. Hope this encourages you, love the channel and the video.

Hi, the XR is basically a ball and chain, your focus seems to be off-road, and it will always hold you back! I would go for the DRZ, it's not perfect, but a great compromise. I have neither of these two bikes, but am in a similar predicament, although I own both bikes. One is a 650 single that weighs about 10kg more than the other, which is a DRZ engined CCM. Important to remember that both bikes can go on a Diet not just the heavier of the two. You readily admit to being, let's say, an intermediate level rider, the DRZ will allow you you enjoy yourself and improve much more than a bike that keeps punishing your mistakes.

@@GreaseAndGravel I know, it's a frightening prospect, maybe regretting putting the XR out of reach. How about selling to a friend? Then maybe as you know where it is, it can always make a comeback? I think the top end rush of the DRZ will certainly compensate for the stump pulling torque of the XR. I think of it as almost two bikes in one, like Jeckyl and Hyde character, docile and manageble low down, quite hard to stall (especially with a flatslide carb like the CCM and the DRZ400E had), but plenty of fun stuff at the top end when you're in the mood to rip!

You will regret swapping the XR for a DRZ. I had a DRZ once, bought brand new from the local dealers. Long range tank and some minor mods. The DRZ seat is really crap in comparison to the XR seat. DRZ has a short ratio gearbox - you are changing gears all the time and it gets very buzzy at highway speeds. I sold the DRZ. I love Honda's I have a crf230l and a nc700x but I bought a drz400s last fall because it was much lighter than my nc700. I have never ridden a xr650l but having researched both bikes I agree with you that the xr is easier to set the valves. I have done many mods to my drz and have to say that it need a lot more mods than I think I would have made on a xr. But both bike are dead pan reliable and will serve you well from all I know about them. I don't think any one could go wrong with either of these bikes. In terms of having to hold back on the throttle because of to much torque I don't think a drz is going to be much different than the xr. Booth are very torquey and will easily lift the front wheel off the ground in 1,2 or,3rd gear. They are booth very powerful machines.

I pulled the swing arm off and greased all the bearings. Replaced the rear brake flued container. @GreaseAndGravel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thank, I appreciate it! Welcome to the DS world. The recommended procedure is to let the engine idle until warmed up (will vary due to outside temp). I just check after each ride as it's hot already. So I'll let the bike stand for 3-5 min after a ride and wipe the dipstick. Then insert it without threading it on (i.e. just flush with opening)... bike needs to be upright, so I sit on it. The oil should be close to the top. I always get an accurate reading this way, but have heard of riders having trouble. The oil capacity is about 2.1 quarts (2 liters). Enjoy the bike! Cheers

Both are great bikes but the old Honda 650 is my preference as I an an XR 600 owner. Last month I bought a new 2021 KTM 690 enduro and it's a nice bike but nothing like my Honda 600 in the dirt or single track. I tried to pick upnthe XR650L but asking prices were close to 11k and nothing was local. Ended ul.with the KTM because it was more local. Next year I might try the Honda 650

Both great bullet proof bikes and consider them tools for different jobs. If the XR is riding you, then it's not the right bike for you at this point. Riding a lower powered bike like the DRZ or WR250R will make you a better rider sooner then riding the XR that you don't feel comfortable with. Keep the XR for later and buy a DRZ now.

I just into dirt bikes about 2 years ago at 52. never road a dirt bike before. I had been riding a road bike for about 10 years before and of late an old 1200gs. with more dirt riding on it of late.
I suggest being clear with your usage even if your horizon is a year. so I wanted to ride dirt and trails and was ok trailing my bike there. I didn't really care about age, make, model etc. just low cost an ongoing cost. I settled on a 2012 2 stroke ktm 250xcw. paid too much but that's life. it has been the best fun and skill for building exercise I have had. it's light. more power than I could ever use and I am amazed how my skills have developed and how much fun I have had in a safe way. in fact It has gave me the confidence to take the gs Offroad.
so work out what is going to be the most fun and what you will actually do frequently. then fit the bike, any bike that's reliable. I don't think of the bike once on the trail. just the fun, adventure and company.
My next desire now is to do more advanced adventure bike tours but with a smaller adventure bike. 250 to about 500. I think it will be fun, and I can forget the bike and focus on the adventure. so just do it

I'm looking at a smaller (read lighter!) off road bike - and have yet to pull the trigger. The CRF300L has the inside track for now. But a riding buddy has said to just learn to ride what you have. Easy for him to say, he had the DR350 at the time. About 200lbs lighter than the XR! In the end, I don't think I'll ever get into bombing on the dirt anyway; I'd just be buying into the idea, not really living it.
People always mention their height when it comes to talking about seat height; while it's kinda important, the real data point that matters is your inseam. I've shrunk from 6'-2" to around 5'-11" (crushed back) but my inseam is still 36"+ so I can flat foot pretty much any bike. On the down side, there are way too many bikes that simply don't have the room to store my legs!
Anyway, if you can afford it, I'll offer up the idea of scoring on a Suzuki DR-350. Not as easy to find, but much lighter, air cooled - basically it has going for it all the reasons you like the 650 - just not as good on the road (I can attest that it is plenty good for up 70mph so not that bad at all).

Good vid by the way. I would say throw away the spec sheets they don't tell the whole story. Like the peak torque figures don't illustrate that the XR produces much more lower down, you may think that is a good thing, but the softer power low down on the DRZ does aid traction. Conversely, I do like the XR for its oil cooled simplicity and reliability. I don't think you will have any problem with the DRZ motor though, other than you crashing and breaking a radiator! All the servicing intervals on these non competition engines are over hyped. Most of the time, it's just a valve check, the clearance is ok, and no adjustment is required. For this reason I'm building my own 350cc 130kg oil cooled carb dual sport bike.

    • @GreaseAndGravel

I do a lot of supermoto trackdays and racing on my DRZ and an theres a guy that's always at the track with his xr650l, so naturally as the only 2 guys on streetbikes, we are unofficial rivals. It's all love tho, this is just amateur farting around.
I think I got a clean pass on him once during a race a couple seasons ago, but since then he moved to slicks and I can't hang with him. Maybe someday I'll do the same and see if I can catch him again. haha

I like the DRC but in this case I’d stick with the 650 because of the way I ride. I’m not riding motocross so I don’t need a little skinny hard seat I like the riding position on the XR or XL bikes they just need a 350 or 400 option Keep a nice big cushy seat the easy riding position the softer suspension which isn’t great for jumping and motocross but is much nicer on almost everything else and I think that’s what more people would want because when they have the DRC or the CRF they complain about how uncomfortable they are and with all the tech on them it’s cool and all but why would you want all that tack on a motocross bike that you’re going to trash and if that’s not the way you ride then why do you want motocross positioning and seats that are incredibly uncomfortable on longer rides. Maybe I’m wrong but they’re all great bikes but I think Honda kind of dropped the ball when they got rid of these models. If you go back to the early 80s you can get 75 and 80 a 100 a 125 a 185 a 200 a 250 a 350 a 400 for one or two years a 500 and 600 which eventually turned into the XR 650 L. The great thing about these bikes is they were a true dual sport bike that a nice comfortable seat a good riding position and we’re a Street themed version of the XR series which was kind of a every man’s more fun dirtbike as opposed to being the CR which was more race. The XR was just a good woods bike it was comfortable and easy to ride I just wore an all-around bike, the XL version was street legal with a little wider gear ratio for the streets. The only thing they were lacking was an electric start option. Spence gym wasn’t amazing it wasn’t a jumping bike but soaked up the potholes in the bumps on the dirt roads in the ruts and they did pretty good and they were nice and comfortable in the street the seats were comfortable the riding position was comfortable the power band was nice and wide and You had great torque and you had a ton of options to get the perfect size for everybody. Then all of a sudden you could only get the 250 and the 600 or 650 and they were several years you were kind of stuck there and the CRF is cool but I think the XR styling is just more practical for most riders. Especially if you’re gonna go out and put some miles on it. I can ride that XR 650 for three or four hours I can drive a couple hours do some mountain trails ride through the woods and ride a couple more hours home on the streets and it does pretty good on all of them. DRZ will do it but it’s going to be very uncomfortable And the CRF in the Cadillac send the rest of them. I just think these were a better all purpose type bike and for what you’re talking about here I would stick with the XR myself though the DRZ has a good choice because it’s more manageable power yet plenty of power to do what you need they just need better seat and six gears. The DRZ will probably be more nimble on the rust stuff but everywhere else that XR is going to be way better in my opinion so people should pick what’s gonna work for the riding but all the manufactures sort of dropped the ball on the mid range multipurpose bikes like this, bring back an XL or XR 350 or 400 L, just update the DRS 350 and get rid of the glitches and I think it’s a better bike than the DRC 400 unless you’re trying to use it for motocross racing and the Cadillacs and the CRF are kind of the same thing both are under powered and lack torque enough for a big rider or two people and they got a lot of new stuff to break and they’re just not as fun or comfortable or easy to ride but they’re not that bad either I just think an XR 350 L or an XR 400 L would be more desirable to a whole lot of people.
When you compare the horsepower and torque between the two you can’t just go by numbers. The DRC‘s got a pretty decent wide power band but not like the XR, it’s just a whole different kind of power and the torque ranging that is very wide. I got the two-stroke you’ve got to constantly be shifting and stay in your power band, you don’t on these if you’re into high ever gear you just keep the gas on and wait a second and it’ll get there it’s not gonna stall you out or bother slow down it’ll just clunk through it for a second and catch up because it’s got that all day to work. The DRC is pretty good with the way torque band but it’s not even close. So you’re gonna have to pay more attention to your gears especially because you’ve only got five of them and you’re gonna have to downshift a lot more come on the hill comes up with the XR are you just give it more gas and it’ll go. So going by the numbers doesn’t always work because those are peak numbers at a certain RPM. I think the XR 650 numbers are rated at something like 7000 RPM, you almost never get this bike up to 7000 RPM unless you’re pushing it really really hard so the peak horsepower doesn’t mean anything do you wanna really look at the power bands, the XR makes its torque very low and keeps it going for a long time so even though the numbers are still pretty close when you look at the weight ratios it’s definitely not the same thing but the DRC is pretty decent, I’m sure if somebody’s racing and really picky about it they’ll complain but both of them but I think they’re both great bikes but when you ride them the XR performs a lot better than you think it would through the DRZ performs about where you think it would. So on paper do you thinking it’s not gonna make a lot of difference but depending on how you’re writing it could be a huge difference but you’re pretty thin and light so if you don’t mind it being uncomfortable and only having five gears the DRZ is a pretty viable option, but that Honda to work is just really nice especially if you’re a bigger guy or carrying a lot of luggage or a second person with you and in that case I’ll take the XR all day long, if you’re just riding by yourself and you’re looking for a more technical motocross type bike than the DRC is that as long as you’re moving and not doing real slow technical stuff but for almost everything else I like the XR better myself. I just wish they had an XR 400 L
I like this video a lot of these comparisons don’t make any sense at all but I like this and these are two of my favorite bikes and it’s a realistic comparison if you’re going to look at an XT 250 versus an XL 250, it’s pretty much the same thing just different manufacturers but they’re very very close so you can pick the one that looks better they’re both great bikes that feel and drive almost identically but this is enough of a difference to actually give a real perspective and enough of a difference to give you a different writing experience, if you were testing the DR 650 against the XR 650, there’d be very little difference. So I think what you’re talking about having a little smaller more manageable bike the DRZ is a good option I just wish they had an XL 400 option because that would get rid of all the shortcomings of the DRZ 400
I always go back and forth on the water cooling. On some bikes I like it but something like this I just rather not deal with it. You can overheat these but I think a couple years they had an oil cooler on it but they were aftermarket oil coolers to keep it a little bit cooler and Water just adds a lot more parts and a lot more than breaking a lot more maintenance and it’s nice but small little it’s just more to deal with especially when they get older you start worrying about hoses and leak send I think the air cooled in the end or just a lot easier, you talked about the valves and all. It’s on the engines even cents I think about 73 I’m pretty much the same and L worked really well, around 83 most of the models came in with the newer vowel styles but they’ve always been great engines and they run forever. I’ve seen an XL 600 with 140,000 miles on it and it ran great. The water cool does it give you an advantage and so does all of electronics but oil coolers are easy and last forever and a small you don’t have to worry about a fan or coolant and it’s not a super high pressure system where you have to worry about leaks as much as water cooled, some tech is very cool and does offer an advantage but at the same time Ken isn’t worth the hassle. The radiators in the way and it’s just a pain to deal with all the extra parts on there. These are easy to work on and if you take care of them change your oil keep your filter clean just your vowels every few thousand miles you’re good and there’s not much else you need to do so you can just drive all the time. The only exception would be with carburetors and newer gas you don’t wanna let it sit around so you have to winterize it but just turn off your gas and let it run out before you stick it in the garage but they’re just incredibly easy to run, if it’s not starting it check your spark plug and make sure it’s getting gas and you’re good that you almost have to crash it to break it or just not do any maintenance and run it without a well these things are tough. I think the DRC is pretty tough too but it’s not unusual to see an old Honda XL with 100,000 miles on it and you see tons of them with 40 and 60,000 miles on them and that’s also great for buying used. If I see a CRF or a KLX with 20,000 miles on it i’m just gonna look for something different but 20 or 30,000 miles on an XR 650 L or the old XL‘s is nothing and with the ease of maintenance it just makes it incredibly easy to own and cheap and never have to worry about it you just jump on and go and they just sort of always work. The older models are hard to kickstart sometimes but if you know how to Use the compression release correctly it wasn’t bad but we never had to work on them and I’m glad they still have the XR 650 L around I wish they bringing a few more sizes with the same thing

I had a DRZ400 some years ago. I found it grossly underpowered even after a pile of mods. As well there was no way to gear it for the highway and the dirt - it needed a sixth gear.
