@@seditionthroughscorns I am the one who's should to say thank you for all your done, some bands never heard of them but now I am fans because your video
I feel like the tech bro/marketing guru mindset seems to do an absolute number on people's brains. Just seems to turn people into the most insufferable self absorbed weirdos who are just toxic to be in the orbit of. I can't imagine who would find such insanely manipulative and spiteful behaviour to be an attractive quality besides other grifty types who also want to use and abuse the people around them.
Necrotic Nick- Maybe. It does seem like there's a lot of weird "red-pilled" content geared to that right now. The "make that money/ hustle" mentality coupled with an exaggerated characterization of the creator just feels cringe to me. That may have been the grift he wanted but he knew it wouldn't work as well with fanbase he cultivated so he nuked it. There's really no positive spin to put on what he did here.
Never heard of this dope. Pulled up a random video and it's hard to unsee the phoniness. So it really tarnishes everything he's done, weird strategy for a marketing guy. You can sell a product you don't care about, but you're supposed to go to the grave pretending you cared. Coming off as being trustworthy is core to the marketing field. A quick search on this dude instantly fucks up his future credibility.
Exaclty what I was thinking, how does he expect to have this high income LinkedIn career when googling the guy is nothing was harsh negativity. All he had to do was do a video saying “my hearts not in it anymore, time to pass the torch” and people would respect him to some extent but nope.
You and the Thrallers have never once seemed disingenuous about your love for metal, you guys rule!!!! My favorite channel on the 'tube, love you guys!!!! 🤘💀🤘🖤🖤🖤
i was so tired of the “why did [PERFECTLY ALIVE AND WELL GENRE] die?” and he’d give a brief wiki description of a few scenes before giving super cold and/or just plain incorrect takes
Writers have dealt with these moves for literal centuries. “Is the novel dead?” “Is poetry dead?” Yes, when hacks try to write anything other than hit pieces with their limited skill. Novelists and poets? We’re fine, thanks. Love to my fellow metalheads. \m/
I think Finn grew up in the hardcore scene loving heavy music, but as he got older he moved away from the music and starting listening to pop country. Then we decided people that still listen to metal have something wrong with them and was condescending as shit. Like he found it incomprehensible that he saw a teenager wearing a Megadeth shirt. He also made comments about finding sad that people identify with metal as a subculture. He's like a boomer that got self righteous after growing out of the free love hippie movement.
Necrotic Nick- Man... what a terrible evolution in taste. Yeah, even when I got into metal I still had my love for other stuff. Sure, we've dogged on a lot of bands on the channel but if the fans love them then more power to them. I don't know what Finn was thinking but this was the wrong way to exit his TH-cam career.
I met Finn McKinty while he was eating chicken wings at a bar once. He told me which ones to get that are his personal favorite. I assume now he was lying about that. What a joke.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I think we still have a TH-cam short up as well as on our Instagram of my collection from last year. It's grown a bit but you can still see the lay out.
Trying to rebrand yourself as a marketing business coach when you just admitted you have the capacity to grift your customers for ten years makes you quite possibly the worst marketing man I've ever seen.
Finn pioneering the fake it till you make it and then fake it some more approach lol. Dude's a 🤡At one point he might've cared about music but that point is long gone.
I actually switched from watching his content to your guys’ close to a year ago. When I found this channel it felt so much more genuine and encouraging for smaller bands/the underground in general! Shame his true colours have been shown, kinda pathetic to see. You guys keep bearing the torch though, you really set the standard! 🍻
Necrotic Nick- Maybe. I don't know if that would go over well either since the question of his sincerity is a big part of this too. Who's to say he's not doing the apology tour as a PR move at this point? I don't know if I would believe him personally.
It's a real shame. I can't say I was a massive fan, but I did like some of Finn's videos. He seemed to know his stuff - as someone else has said, he'd namedrop really off-grid bands - so if he was faking it, he really went to town to do it. As someone who works in marketing myself, you can do a lot of damage being too open about your intentions. Particularly when those intentions are so pernicious. 'Trust in your brand' is what partners and customers buy into; they don't like bullshitters. There's part of me that thinks there's more to it, and he's being deliberately self-destructive. Who knows. Don't worry, Nick, I don't think your passion will ever be questioned. Unless of course you're collecting 11,000 elaborate paperweights. 🤣 Happy holidays from England, J
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, while I wasn't a fan of everything he did early he did make good content but it took a dive and with it so did his attitude towards it. I personally don't think he faked everything but maybe he did when he went more out of his wheelhouse. Either way, a lot of his stuff comes into question with what he said. I totally agree with him being too open here and I think this maneuver will follow him into other ventures as well. I would be less inclined to work with a guy that does shit like this whether it's a tantrum, a poorly plotted troll or a flat out intentional grift. I would want some stability with someone I'm partnered with in terms of the business side of things. Yeah, I don't think I'm losing my love of music anytime soon... but if I do I have a shitload of paperweights now lol. Happy Holidays to you and yours, man!
My only personal issue I had with him was that he once said "Melodic Death Metal is trash because it's not "br00tal" enough" like I am sorry but what? Does he not know that TBDM or hell Arch Enemy's Black Earth exists? Oh and he also once made a video where he said how "Doom Eternal's osts changed metal forever" like again what? Now look I have no problem with Mick Gordon and I do kinda like Doom soundtrack myself but how did it change metal? Like sure Doom's soundtrack is famous okay, but it's mostly really famous and well known within the gaming and paricularly Doom community. And as for how it "changed metal forever" it only introduced some modern kids to Djent under a different name (I forgot it's name). By that logic, Serious Sam is a game with a very well known soundtrack so how come the soundtrack of that game not change metal? Oh I know, because unlike Doom, Serious Sam isn't that much of a popular game. Like the double standards there are very obvious. But yeah regardless, Finn ruined his career on his own, he has no one but himself to blame. And people always said he had no idea what he talks about to which I actually kinda agree. He always felt like someone who both simultaneously had "no opinions on his own" and "extremely biased".
Necrotic Nick- I mean, I've heard that take before from people but I totally disagree. There's tones of much heavier melodeath bands out there like Vehemence or Intestine Baalism. When it came down to hardcore oriented his takes weren't bad initially but his metal takes always felt a bit uneven to the point I wasn't sure how much he actually listened to. I don't think I saw the video game OST videos so I really can't say on those but yeah, Finn nuked his career at least in front of the camera on TH-cam and even if he did enjoy the music at one point I doubt he'll show his face at a show for awhile now.
One thing I will give him credit for. When I would leave a critical comments on his videos (usually for his high focus on all things marketing, which i feel is detrimental to art) he would usually respond in a reasonable manner. I don't like kicking people when they are down and have no desire to join the chorus of disapproval, but there is a part of me that feels that this is all just a marketing ploy. Every youtube music channel is talking about him, this is huge news atm, and if he only wants publicity, he is getting more now that he has quit his channel that he did while he was making videos.
Necrotic Nick- It very well could be a marketing ploy or even an Andy Kauffman-esque troll but at the same time I don't think it was handled very well. They say negative attention is still attention but I don't think he'll be able to return to his channel after this and honestly I would find it to trust him in his marketing ventures as this whole thing make him seem like he has a very dubious nature. I guess we'll see.
Finn just seemed so full of himself. He had no love for old-school metal or doom, apparently, and for me, that's bread-and-butter stuff. I don't care how "extreme" your tastes are, if you can't even like Sabbath. Sabbath! Then eff right off. So good riddance to that guy!
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, as the videos went on he got cockier and cockier. He became more about triggering people rather than delivering engaging content. I don't think I saw the one where he dissed Black Sabbath but I'd just chalk that up to another baseless, spicy take for views then.
@thrallsofmetal It was the one where he "tried" to like classic metal by watching some 80s videos, then wound up bagging on them, Beavis & Butthead style. I thought, "Is this guy for real?" I wrote him off after that.
When I feel overwhelmed by my 1000 + CDs, I can't imagine 11k CDs. I love a large collection of music I love, but the struggle with it is I lose the intimacy of a small collection and finding the time to give albums the attention they deserve. It bothers me when I think there are some albums I haven't listened to in years. I'm 54 now so I'm starting to feel "which are the albums/bands I'm going to listen to for the rest of my life"?
Necrotic Nick- It's a massive collection and a pain in the ass when I want to add stuff to it but I love it. I honestly love the fact that there's stuff that I haven't listened to in years in my collection because if it's as good as I remember it then I get that whole "rediscovering a gem" thing. For me, there's still room for music that I'll be in love with for the rest of my days.
I have about 2.5k cds and I want to get rid of about 1/2 of them that I'l probably never listen to again (while still buying more that I like) but I'm lazy to engage with selling on either Ebay or Discogs to do so.
@@jasonjames6383 we have a record store here that buys used. The bad thing is you don't get more then $2 a CD. I'd have a hard time selling more then 50 CDs. Some bands just have too many albums eg. Do I need 21 Overkill CDs? Especially when it's the first 5 I like the most. I would just like to have my collection down to 2 shelves. I keep buying albums from Megadeth, Overkill, Testament, Death Angel, when it's really their 80-early 90s I have a fondness for. And like you said I want to get newer stuff that more reflects my current taste
I, like you, was sort of a fan at one point. I watched most of his videos semi-regularly, but then, as you mentioned, he took a bit of a turn. It was at this point about 2 years ago I began to tune out because he seemed like he wasn't engaged any longer. He wasn't even faking it very well and I watched him often enough to think I caught him in a couple of lies, but I wasn't going to go coming back through his videos to prove it. That simply wasn't worth my time. Not to mention the bands that he covered really weren't my style most of the time. I watched Tank the Tech support him and walked away thinking 'Wow, the only person on TH-cam who actually supports him." Most smaller content creators were just jumping on this situation to try to harvest views and subscribers. I try to remain positive and give people the benefit of the doubt, but what you said really resonates. He took money from people that supported him. That's despicable. If you make an income from TH-cam based on views, subscribers and whatever, that's one thing, but any gifts or patreon subscribers should feel like they were robbed in retrospect.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, that's pretty much how it went. After awhile you could tell he didn't care and his takes on stuff felt spicy for the sake of being spicy. You can only fake it for so long before the cracks start to show. I haven't watched Tank's video on him. I generally like that dude's stuff but this is a hard one to defend. This just left me questioning Finn's character in the end and I'm sure more will come out about this over time but for right now I think the amount of mud being slung his way is warranted.
That's exactly what Finn was doing. He doesn't care anymore since he's done with social media. Why should he care if he pisses everyone off on the way out. I think it's funny people care this much about a random guys opinions.
@@michelvoortman4725 Yeah I watched quite a bit of finns stuff and I hated a lot of his takes. He's the kind of guy to say Billie Eilish is metal just for the piss of it without realizing it's just slowly tearing down the identity of an entire scene.
You are spot on, kids content seems to be where the money is at. The videos my kid watches have a ridiculous amount of views. Truly ridiculous. Nobody is getting rich off of ranking the Crowbar discography (for example). In short, fuck that guy and thank you guys for how awesome this channel is.
Necrotic Nick- It completely is. I've watched videos about it and it's easily the biggest market out there. Just looking at the numbers on Minecraft oriented channels the numbers can be insane in terms of views and subs. Talking about anything kids are crazy about will likely lead to bigger numbers since will spend hours on their tablets and as long as you're making kid friendly stuff (which we definitely don't) there's not as much fighting upstream for ad revenue, sponsors etc. Hell, it could just be reaction videos to anime or pop artists too where they're playing a video and going "Oh, wow" every 5 mins so it's low hanging fruit too so if Finn was all about the money, why didn't he just do that shit? Personally, I think he just burned all his bridges to be dick and I think it'll follow him wherever he goes now. Thanks for the support, man! Unlike Fin, we appreciate our fans.
Necrotic Nick- I thought he was at least good at what he did for a time but his content got stale and this admission he made just makes him look worse.
I'm 46 and I always figured he was a bit younger than me. Mainly because he was more into the Nu-Metal. There was also a time when he was complete dismissive of Madonna's influence on music videos and there was just no way he was watching MTV when I was. He had a lot of takes that seemed to peg which year he was a particular age.
I'm glad I found out about you guys, along with the Metal Meltdown and Metal Trenches last year. You all have helped me find some really cool metal albums that I might not've found on my own and also helped me appreciate extreme metal a lot more than I did when I was younger, and there's ever a doubt that you all aren't passionate about what you talk about. Keep up the great work!
Merry Christmas to everyone at Thralls and a happy new years. Thank you for a year full of posts. If comes the day when Nick is sick of metal, I will gladly take his CD collection from him. 😂
I like the way you approached this topic. I too watched the Punkrock MBA at one time. I stopped when I left a comment on his video about Metallica. McGrifter has always sat on the fence on many topics which in the way it is presented is what anybody who doesn't have a clue on what they are talking about should do. However with his claims of being on the ground when things started kicking off with death metal and what he was saying about Metallica I called him out on it. I basically said that he needs to give credit where credit is due. I get people's opinions and I except those negative opinions on Metallica. I can't remember what he said in that video that irked me to the point of potentially starting shit with a content creator with a lot of subscribers but it was a problem that didn't sit well with me. My opinion of him from that point on was he was a poser. In the truest most disgustingly way one can be he is. I'm glad that the "community" is now seeing him for what he is. From what he claims to be his forte he sure went and proved otherwise. He may have enjoyed the music he talked about at one time, but clearly at some point didn't and if it was the clout or views it all equalled money to him. Where you mentioned the "community" throwing the word poser around loosely, hopefully that will stop now. The younger listeners finally get the example of what a true poser is and maybe us older listeners of this music can thank McGrifter for finally showing his true colors.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I never actually commented on his stuff but I noticed his fan interaction was pretty minimal in the comments. He seemed to like streaming more when it came down to interaction with fans. I may have to look at them a bit more though. I get that some creators want ride the fence as to not rock the boat but generally I find that music fans back up their opinion with reasons so I can kinda see how that might come off suspect with this comment. Like you said, I think at one point he legit did care and then he just stopped caring about the content and more about the views. I can only speak for myself but I'd much rather talk about stuff I have legit opinions on rather than just fake it for views.
He just burned a bridge he wasn't gonna cross again with a smile on his face. This was a last, snarky middle finger to an internet scene that he probably grew tired of. He trolled TF out of everyone, and I'm sure he is very amused that it worked beyond his highest expectations
Trust me, just like 99.9999999999% other youtubers, he will come back sooner or later. Yeah I am sorry I rarely can take a youtuber leaving nowadays seriously.
He made a Black Metal video, and was name dropping Abruptum and Emit. That's some WAY under the radar shit. If he didn't really like it, he had to do research the hell outta that to find those kinds of bands!
I wouldn't doubt for a second he just googled obscure black metal on rate your music, he's used to recycling wikipedia and Spotify stats so he could easily make up a stance to make him sound more credible
He literally had a Morbid Angel tattoo and went on and on about Pantera plus claimed he listened to any genre for 30+ yrs. I think what he meant, was that the music yt side of it was what he wasn't into. Or it's all a ploy to try and cover for other shady things 👀 Something that rhymes with zoomer 🤔 But idk. It was a dick move on his part for sure.
why are people even wondering? do they think the workers at mcdonalds are happy to serve them their burgers? same goes for finn clickbait mckenty. people have this feeling that because its music, there must be some kind of passion involved with it but guess what, music is just as commodified as everything else in society.
Necrotic Nick- You really think running a TH-cam channel is comparable to working at McDonald's? Me personally, if I'm not into something at all I wouldn't form a channel around, dedicate time to said channel and talk to people who I really wouldn't have any common ground with. I think solid content comes from people that are at least enjoying what they do. This isn't punching a clock to me at least. Feigning interest in something more niche like heavier music for views makes even less sense to me since it's more of a niche market which Finn seems more focused on that aspect so I never quite got that. Yeah, you could say some music is commodified but not all of it and even then the passion people feel for it whether it's the artists or the fans I would say is still a factor.
I always got a weird vibe from finn's videos and i heavily disagreed with alot of his takes, even before this situation he said he would repeat ideas just because of the algorythm, i kinda feel the same about become the knights channel aswell to be honest, more in it for the money than the love of music, although atleast with him it feels like he has a greater knowledge of music even if he does focus more on the algorythm than anything else.
I knew something was off with that dude when he made videos defending Ronald Radke while simultaneously leaving out things he has said and, allegedly, done.
I might also add that if Fim was never passionate about music all he has done is wasting his time. You can always get a job, you can always make money I do believe that Finn gives zero fucks about music NOW, but to say he never did.puts him in denial of who he is and where he has been.
I was aware of the guy, but never really watched his stuff. I do remember someone posting a video of his in a Discord server I was in, and it was him complaining about prog rock and prog metal. At first, I just assumed that, as a punk rock guy (a genre notorious for being down on prog), it was just a basic misunderstanding or disinterest in the prog genres, so I didn't feel too much about his take. However, hearing all this, it now makes me wonder if he was just hating on things to get views (which still works these days), which is kinda depressing. How many people did he steer away from prog music that might have liked it? Oh well. I guess I didn't follow a guy who, in the end, probably wasn't worth following. Sincerity is an interesting currency on the internet: those who use it wisely may not be instant successes, but do build slowly, while others who get big for faking tend to cash out that sincerity only for the benefit of themselves. Fortunately, time tends to prove who is who, and I'm glad to be following you guys, even if I don't engage very much with your videos. 😅In any case, keep up the good work. We all see that work you put in, and are grateful to you for it.
I checked out his channel a few years back on friend's recommendation & dude came off like a jerk to me, just didn't like him...guess my intuition was right lol. Your channel however it's pretty easy to see how genuine ya'll are & seem like cool down to earth dudes. Your guy's tastes definitely run more extreme than mine but have discovered some cool artists off this channel🤘
I agree Nick. His channel was probably the first one I found several years ago talking about death metal and crossover thrash and stuff so I've followed him for a while. If it was only for clicks and views why did he start with niche things like Cro-Mags and the history of breakdowns? Wouldn't talking about Slipknot and Taylor Swift from the very beginning have made more sense to reach the most people? Obviously there was some passion there for at least parts of it like Black Flag and Hatebreed and stuff so he should have just quit like you said and just told people he's over it instead of coming off so cocky.
Looking back at all made sense, he would have views that contradicted each other. For example, in one video he would give blind praise to something for no other reason other than it being popular and/or financially successful without diving into the music itself, and in another video he would claim to only like the really raw gritty sounding stuff because he was such a "purist."
Necrotic Nick- When you fake something for so long the cracks in the facade eventually start showing so I'd have to agree. I feel like his content became less about delivering well thought out subjects to just trying to irritate people for clicks. If he never had that much skin in the game then honestly that makes sense.
The whole thing seemed bizarre to me. Like he knew so much about old hardcore bands or MySpace deathcore bands no one remembers. To flat out say he didn’t like any of the music he talked about didn’t make sense to me. Lesson to be learnt here is to avoid people who’s favourite social media is LinkedIn.
Necrotic Nick- Personally, I think him not liking any of music he was talking about is probably an exaggeration but I think he wanted to nuke his own channel and this was how he went about it. It says a lot about his character in my opinion and I have a feeling it'll follow him to Linkedin and wherever else he goes.
Really well put Nick, if he was getting tired of making content or just wanted to shift gears there were SO many better ways he could’ve gone about that. Add to that the fact that it really is hard to believe he doesn’t actually like the music he covered and it’s hard to form an opinion of it that doesn’t scream “POSER” and I hardly ever call someone that.
Off topic: What is the song you guys use in your intro? On topic: Finn McCuntygrifergroomerposer is a menace and an actual example of what people would call "Poser," but the word poser is so overused. For example, if there's something you dont agree with, Poser, Don't like a certain genre of Metal, Poser, Not listening to what others like and/or listen to, Poser. It's a word that i dislike a lot, but when it comes to Finn, he takes 1st Place for Poser in Metal History!
Necrotic Nick- The song is called "Third Generation" by the band Constricted which features some of our channel's contributors. Yeah, the term "poser" does get thrown around so much that it's lost it's meaning but this I feel like is what the definition of the word should be used for. If I use the term "poser" this is the kinda behavior I'm talking about.
Necrotic Nick- I haven't worked with any so I can't say but I will say that if I worked with Finn I don't think I have much positive to say at this point.
@thrallsofmetal mine is Zinc. A lot of cheap old toys, guns and airguns are made with the zinc alloy zamak, and also "zink" sounds like a low powered obsolete sci Fi blaster going off ZINKZINKZINK *explosion* ZINK
I was doing my morning stuff, with your voice as my accompaniment, and you called Finn a “c**k,” and it stopped me in my tracks. Perfect word. Maybe it’s our age-group, but that word nails it. Finn now comes across as a total c**k, and I’m glad he (and his weird dead eyes nobody talks about) has left. Salud!
Found his channel to be entertaining at times and he seemed to be passionate about early hardcore. Heard that he couldnt get past the negative comments so he decided to scorch all the music bridges
I had a pretty long conversation with him about leeway once. not the most obscure band in the world, but not a band you would research randomly to know what the kids were into for your grift. He was very clearly very into music. He's just pulling some kind of b******* now we're having a crisis or something
It feels like this discussion about him(I think I've seen at least 4 videos about it) has gotten more attention than anything he ever did on his channel.
I wasn't a big fan or anything of this guy, but I did spend some nights watching his videos once in a while. And I have kind of the same views as everybody else. I also suspect that he probably was just burnt out from the music. I'm a big horror fan, but I'll freely admit, there are times when I totally become burnt out. Same with true crime, I'm a big fan of true crime, but I get burnt out. Same with my favorite bands. Like "Nah, I'm sick of listening to Acid witch" or "nah, I'm sick of listening to Macabre's new album." I've watched a few horror movie channels and there are a few where they freely admit "I'm getting burnt out on this. I'm a fan of other movies. Not just horror movies. So I'm getting sick of making videos about horror movies. I wish I could talk about action movies." So I do suspect that may be the case. The biggest red flag is when he said "I've never actually heard System of the down" I aint a System of a down fan. I like maybe 4 of their songs? But I find it hard to believe he never heard a System of a down song. Especially back in the 2000's. I'm a 90's kid and a 2000's teen and while I was never a fan - I couldn't help but hear them all the time. They were huge in the 2000's. So that's a big red flag. That is like saying "oh I've never heard Metallica in my life" REALLY?! How is that possible?! Again, I grew up in the 90's. Enter the sandman was huge. I remember being at Summer camp and hearing that song play on the radio in one of the cabins. Let alone MTV showing the music video from time to time. Even my self, who is not a fan of System of the down, still know their songs and heard their songs more then once. So ya, I don't actually believe him. I think he is either exaggerating or trying to totally burn any bridges. Which I honestly don't understand, like why would you want to do that? Just go "Ya, I'm burnt out. I don't really care about music anymore. I haven't cared for a long while actually. I was just making continuing to do it for the money" Well, that makes total sense. You started out with the passion, you burnt out, got bored, and your moving on. No problem with that, but to go "oh ya, I was never ever into this media and I've never heard a System of the down song." it's like what?! And again, I'm a 90's/2000's kid. I was all into Korn. I owned all their albums. I owned the Infest album by Papa roach. Which I still think is one of the best albums ever. I was listening to Eminem. Then in like 2005, 2006, I'm officially in my teens and I started to get into Marilyn Manson, Cannibal Corpse, Electric Wizard, Jack off Jill, etc...but what does that mean?! I like so many of those fans HATED HATED the boy bands of the era. I hated Britney Spears. When Eminem would go "I'm sick of you little girl and boy groups, all you do is annoy me · So I have been sent here to destroy you" I was cheering. Going "YA! GO GET EM!" A music fan at Woodstock 1999 - Music fan: I'm sick of the fucking backstreet boys on MTV, live. I'm sick of that shit. You know? It's bullshit. MTV: Don't hold back on me. Music fan: I aint holdin back. I hate that shit. THAT WAS ME, I WAS THAT GUY. That is exactly what I was like in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003. All through out the 2000's I was like "WTF is going on?" DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY TIMES I HEARD ALL OF THOSE SONGS?! ALL THE TIME!!!!! Seriously. I heard Britney Spears, NSYNC, The backstreet boys, etc all the time. Not willingly.
Necrotic Nick- I get the whole getting burnt out on something. I've hit points like that but I still ultimately enjoy what we do here and the positives still far outweigh the negatives in terms of my experience on this platform. Even if I did what to call it quits or go on indefinite hiatus I wouldn't do what he did. Whether he meant everything he said, was just venting his rage awkwardly or it's some Andy Kauffman-esque troll he burnt a lot of bridges and some of them may have had connections to future endeavors. When he said he hadn't heard of System of a Down... I still find that hard to believe as I know people that don't even listen to metal that know at least who they are. Again, there's part of me that think he just went scorched earth on his channel just to make it easier to not come back to it but the way he said it has me even questioning that too.
Nick, I think you have good points, but I cannot agree about your assessment of TH-cam itself. People 100% got into TH-cam to make money and that is WELL documented now! I don't follow some channels I used to because I don't like them faking their shit just to make some $$$$'s. A smallish tech channel I used to follow (200Kish subs) had the dude on a video admit that he really ONLY used it to get a better house; which means that his passion for tech stuff, PC's mainly, was not all the way genuine. Pisses me off, but you cannot dismiss that many do see this place as a cash register. Having said this, I do NOT think Thralls of Metal is that. You and Jon have shown so much humanity in how you talk about the music, so much........authentic attitude. Nick, dude, you know heavy music better than anybody else on this platform! I don't watch most of the reviews you do because I just don't know who you are talking about. I do love the collection updates because I find new stuff to listen and I really appreciate it! Finn didn't know anything and I found his videos to be so inconsistent in quality, tone and opinion. How he fooled (millions of views over the years) is beyond me. I know that I watch the older videos on TOM because they make me laugh (fuckin Black Sabbath ranking is GOAT for me here, or that earlier 6 Feet Under review from 2020 or whatever). I rewatch due to how authentic you guys are here. Calling out fools over being "only" about the $$$$$'s is completely fair, I just think that more people are on TH-cam for money than you think. You can tell that when the quality of the videos just sucks, and continues sucking for months on end, the channels are inauthentic. Either way, thanks for sharing \m/ \m/
Necrotic Nick- I don't think it was always that way and I still know plenty of people that don't bother with monetization, patron, memberships etc. and just do it because it's a fun outlet. That's how a lot of the OG TH-camrs got started and then, if they hung around and built a following, they got offered a chance to make a bit of money and went for it. We never thought we'd be monetized but we got lucky and it's nice to have some supplemental income for what we do but I would do it regardless if we only had less than 1K subs because I legit enjoy it which I'm glad we kinda echo that here as you said. We're fans first and foremost and we just want to talk about the music we love (and occasionally don't love) with fellow fans out there. I can't say for certain what everyone's motivations are for making a TH-cam channel is but I'd like to think it's about the passion for what they talk about. Might be naive of me though. Thanks for the kind words as always, man!
I used to be a subscriber to the PRMBA, but when he started pretty much praising Ronnie Radke repeatedly and interviewing people like Jonny Craig, I just had to unsubscribe.
I didn't like or agree with a lot of his takes. But I appreciated how he got a lot of eyes on alternative and heavy music and did good videos on history of scenes and bands and stuff. I always had a whiff of fakeness or conceit in him, but not this. I do think he does genuinely like bands and music like pretty much any person, but he's kind of lashing out and throwing a fit. I heard someone comment, he's the type to have a fallout with his friends and be like "well I never liked you guys anyways" and it's so true. It does kinda sound like projection too. Idk, I haven't seen a tantrum and lash out like this since I think middle school in recess.
Necrotic Nick- When it came down to a good chunk of the metal stuff I didn't but I did agree with some of his takes on the hardcore scene overall and I thought he did a good job when it came down to the history of scenes and their impact on music and even pop culture in general. Somewhere in there he just lost it and became bitter and jaded I guess which leads me to agree with your take on what his friendships might be like. For a guy that seemed pretty well put together on the surface this is a super "pissed off teenager" sort of way of handing his own channel.
@@thrallsofmetal I think him calling musicians losers if they don't have a bunch of money is the shittiest thing he said. And then plugged LinkedIn.. idk what that even is. 🤣 but he either doesn't understand doing things for passion. (Which would be sociopathic or some shit) or really is that immature and shitty about trashing things or scenes or people that basically reject him. He sounds like a failed musician who became a music journalist and then failed at that too, so is going to trash the whole scene on his way out the door.
lol I remember back in the day he made a black metal video and like 2 or 3 minutes into it I can tell he had no idea what he was talking about. I turned it off before I got mad
I hit the "Do not recommend channel" tab on that guy long ago. I disagreed on most of his views on everything. He felt really uninformed on so much stuff, and it all makes sense now. But I hold no ill will. It seems anyone with any real knowledge on metal/punk disagreed with him and stopped watching long ago. The people he grifted allowed themselves to be grifted and they obviously must have shared the same terrible takes he did to stick around.
I did the same thing a few years ago after watching a few videos from him just came across as a ill informed dick who did bad takes on purpose to piss of the fans I honestly think he was hurt by his local scene and wanted to take it out on the fans am glad he's gone tbh 😂
Necrotic Nick- Initially I didn't disagree with all his views. He did have some solid knowledge and good recommendations concerning the hardcore scene early on but as he went on his takes just got more spicy but they felt like they were intended to trigger people rather than just saying "I just don't get into this". I can imagine that some of the people that stuck around might have just agreed with them but I don't think they deserved to be grifted. I've always believed that the fans are the lifesblood of a channel on here and treating them like they're actual people is a plus. I feel like he lost sight of that... if he ever believed it that is.
Necrotic Nick- The video where he makes his admission was on someone else's podcast. I can't remember off hand the name of the channel but I know I've seen the segments in question.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, his self-nuking is all the rage when it comes down to the metal/ rock oriented channels right now. I don't think I'd call him a hipster, but I'd definitely call him a poser for sure at this point.
Yeah the more I think about it, I feel bad for the people who donated money every month. I watched a video here or there but there were people who probably participated in his community daily and imagine saying you don’t give a shit about any of those people that paid your bills. Marketing majors though I guess, only attaching a human’s value to how much money they want to make 🤷🏼♂️
Its funny cause i didnt like Finn since he started to put a lot of really ragebait content and the most absurd opinions i ever heard. For me was kinda transparent how scummy and dishonest he was. Feels he is too moraly broken to be selfaware of how to be a good lier.
Necrotic Nick- I didn't mind his content early on but it definitely dropped off and towards the end he started coming off as antagonistic just for the sake of stirring people up. That coupled with his insincerity about his content just makes him look like a dickhead and I think this will follow him into his "marketing career" or whatever he's doing now.
As someone who liked those videos and his work, it's a damn shame. He's definitely not entirely genuine with the whole "I don't like music, I never liked music", he has multiple band tattoos and shit, and in the beginning he did seem like he cared. You can see the drop off in his mood, he had a kid and I think he realizes he wasn't doing what he loved anymore, Mid-Life crisis style. I wish him the best in the future because man he seems off in these interviews lately.
Necrotic Nick- See, I don't necessarily buy the whole "I don't like music thing" but I do think he might been faking his interest/ knowledge about some bands for the views. While I thought he was solid with with hardcore and punk side of his content the metal side of it seemed uneven. Yeah, this could have been handled so much better but I think this maneuver is going to follow him into other ventures.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! If the reason he nuked his channel was because of the negativity then he handled it poorly as well. Letting haters get under your skin to the point you self destruct just means they won.
Never watched this dude’s videos so don’t give a shit. But I’ll say no one questions the integrity of the Thralls crew. Thanks for keeping it real, boys!
I never liked Punk Rock MBA, his videos about punk were filled with revisionist history and things that were just plain off the mark to anyone who was into that music scene. Sadly, I think this is for attention and he will be back, but hopefully I'm wrong.
Necrotic Nick- I did actually like his earlier material but he definitely slid and you could tell he was putting more of his own spin on scenes as he was going on. I'm not sure if he'll be back but if he does resurface I don't think he'll be as welcomed by his fans as he may think. I have a feeling there will be more made public before any attempt at a comeback happens.
Fraud McGRIFTY 😂 Well said Nick👌. I can’t believe I used to watch him aswell when this guy hates on so many legendary bands. But then shows support for bands like Crazy Town.
Nick, of every channel I've ever watched, in any topic or genre, the single channel that I'd be most shocked about it being fake would be yours. You, and all the gents that have joined you, OBVIOUSLY have genuine love for the metal, as do I.
Necrotic Nick- Thank you, man! This music has always been important to me and I've always wanted my love of it to come through in our content so I really appreciate that.
I liked the stuff he wrote for the metal inquisition blogspot as Sergeant D. Google Metal Inquisition blogspot Wild Rags and he's writing about music he actually likes and not clickbait. I found it weird when he started the stuff you will hate blog which morphed into his TH-cam channel. I didn't realize it was the same guy that wrote for the metal inquisition blog until recently as I lost interest in his writing around the time that the other guys that did the blog started the Metal Sucks website.
You guys should do an 80s and 90s rare death metal list one. I've seen alot of them but I bet you can find more gems. 20 years ago I only knew the classics lol.
I never really got into his stuff because he seemed like a pretentious douche, so i cant say im suprised. Though i am dumb founded, you would go out of your way for many years to personally cultivate a channel and following on something you absolutely didnt care anything about, thats something someone does with a normal 9to5 not a youtube channel. Either way makes me appreciate you guys more, and the fact your are very open and transparent about everything🤘
Necrotic Nick- Early on he didn't come off that way to me at least but as his videos become more ragebait and the takes seemed to get spicier for the sake of being spicy. He might have cared at one point but maybe that dwindled and he just wanted to milk his followers which to me is shallow. His fans probably thought they had some sort of connection in terms of that love for music with him and to find out it might have all been a ruse and to hear talk shit about it, yeah, that's pretty fucked up. Thanks for the kind words, man. Our love for what we do hasn't diminished one bit and we look forward to putting out a ton of content still.
Let’s be real, going out this way was a tactical move to promote his consulting business. You and the other TH-camrs all talking about this is insane free marketing for his new venture where he doesn’t require a massive amount of people to sign up, just the right people who want that service. To be clear, this isn’t an attack on you or anyone else. Just saying him going out in a rude way to his current fans is a move to get his new customers.
I don't really care for his reasons for making videos, but what always bothered me is that he never acknowledged his borderline predatory relationship with his wife. Saw some theories that the interview was his way of drawing attention away from that, if yes, it didn't work
Necrotic Nick- I didn't get into the stuff with his wife and the creepy age gap there is between them or how it borders on grooming even though she was 18 when they met from what I hear. There will probably be more that comes out over the next few months. What really bugs me about faking the content is him trying to promote himself as a marketing guy to people: why would you trust this dude after a stunt like this?
i can kinda understand finn because he is a marketing major liberal who only really cares about superficial metrics, likes, clicks, mainstream success etc etc. he was a slave to the algorithm and had to do mindless content to earn his bread. i def believe he was passionate about his videos once, but trying to please the algorithm kills you in the long run. and talking about mgk for the 100th of time damn...
Necrotic Nick- Again, why music and particularly why focus it more on the heavier side. If churning out soulless content was his grift from the rip and just focusing on what would push the algorithm, likes, clicks etc. then why not do something where there's a chance for an even higher success rate? Why not target a much bigger demographic? Again, I still think at one point he probably was genuine but I think he became jaded and just took it out on his fans.
@@thrallsofmetal sometimes its about targeting a niche thats big enough. gibson could market to a bigger demographic too if they made cheaper guitars but their business model seems to work. finn said he made his bread and still earns money through views. i can understand the hurt in the mckenty case because music is something dear to our hearts, but the rules of the market/algorithm apply too it to and it severly affects it. I do think youtube is different than mcdonalds, because most youtube channels are run by individuals, not by thousands of people. there are also people who love working at mcdonalds, who love pumping out shitty clickbait algorithm videos. there are also channels that are run like a family restaurant that cooks with love, like yours for example :)
I'm wondering if he was lying about not ever being into the music, and maybe he just had burn out from the toxicity of online people and the scene and wanted to find a way to make sure he could burn the bridge of being part of this scene by just saying "I never liked it, I just made money" to intentionally detach from it due to burn out. Just a thought because he mentioned Dark Angel in a video and I feel like a casual couldn't name drop dark angel, and also he said "I never listened to system of a down" okay chop suey was everywhere, you definitely know at least 1 system of a down song, idk I feel like it's more likely he's just saying all this to piss people off so he can get away from something he's no longer passionate about but couldn't escape from in anyway in his mind other then giving a big fuck you to the scene.
Necrotic Nick- I'm still uncertain but if he did just lash out because the toxicity or trolling got to him and he essentially nuked his channel for that reason, then he cut off his nose despite his face. If that's what he wanted though, a clean break where even going back wasn't going to be an option, then he got it. Yeah, the SOAD thing really struck me as bullshit but at the same time, I'm sure someone could fake it just looking up their most popular tracks and just bullshitting around that like they jammed all their albums. It's possible. Either way, this whole thing, which I'm sure more will come out, just strikes me as a shitty way to handle the whole thing and I think it's going to follow him into whatever he tries to do next.
There was a time where I thought his videos were entertaining but after awhile, his "takes" and opinions were so ridiculous that I checked right out. Looks as though my suspicions were onto something.
Interesting video, eventually we see the true side of people, your passion for metal is inspiring and something you should be proud of, as always Thralls shits on other channels. Cheers!!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I wouldn't say we shit on other channels. There's a lot of killer content creators on this platform and I love the sense of community here.
Hey Nick have you ever thought of possibly making a discord or something along the lines of that for your community? Feel like it'd be a cool way for people to share music and stuff possibly.
Please don't. I already have enough other channels begging me to join that bullshit every video. I'm trying to get on LESS social media these days, not more.
Necrotic Nick- I personally don't like Discord. My experiences on there haven't been the best and honestly I would rarely have time to be on there which wouldn't be fair to our followers.
I started questioning his motivation after that black metal video he made, nothing good could've come from uploading that video and he became very bitter since
Yeah I remember finding that video ludicrous to an extreme degree and pretty much despised his personality after that. He seemed really snobby and needlessly antagonistic towards people with different tastes.
I've said for a while that I didn't think he actually liked music. It was always about the scene, identity, power dynamics between fan bases, etc. He didn't seem to care about the quality of the actual music. He even thought it elitist to express an opinion about music. But if you're passionate about music, you're gonna have opinions.
Necrotic Nick- I did think he focused a lot on the stuff that surrounded the music while only talking about the albums and bands more lightly. That really started to show up more as he progressed too. Yeah, it's not elitist to express your opinion. It's when that opinion is weaponized that it become an elitist thing. Yet another misguided take from Finn there but I'm not surprised.
Fraud McGrifty 🤣
Necrotic Nick- I'm sure I'm not the only one coming up with nicknames for him now lol.
@thrallsofmetal No your not
I'm sure your not but you're definitely the best at it lmao
Best nickname ever
@ryanfontanilla8290 👍 Agreed

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man!

Yeah his shit was all cheese click bait. Thats slick marketing I guess
Writers have dealt with these moves for literal centuries. “Is the novel dead?” “Is poetry dead?”
Yes, when hacks try to write anything other than hit pieces with their limited skill. Novelists and poets? We’re fine, thanks.
Love to my fellow metalheads. \m/
The only thing he knew about was 90s hardcore
💯
@@xkidmidnightx Exactly, everything else was just lies.
Guy doesn't even like chicken wings
"Give up being a band and just become a SoundCloud rapper. That's where the numbers are." - Finn probably
Necrotic Nick- That sounds like him to a tee lol.
On a side note, 11 thousand CDs is fucking amazing, would love to see a room tour video of everything!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I think we still have a TH-cam short up as well as on our Instagram of my collection from last year. It's grown a bit but you can still see the lay out.
@@thrallsofmetal Sounds awesome. Gotta check that vid out.
Never trust a man that likes "Crunkcore"
Dude had awful takes all around and often. I very rarely agreed with him.
He cared. Hes throwing a tantrum and saying and doing things he will regret.
Necrotic Nick- Maybe he did. I'm not sure if he does anymore but I agree, this is going to follow him for awhile.
@thrallsofmetal an apology saying he was mad and frustrated would be all it would take for him to come back but it needs to happen asap
Necrotic Nick- Maybe. I don't know if that would go over well either since the question of his sincerity is a big part of this too. Who's to say he's not doing the apology tour as a PR move at this point? I don't know if I would believe him personally.
@@thrallsofmetal I hear ya and agree
Happy holidays from England, J
I don't think you need to like Sabbath, but recognition and respect for them is essential -- that I agree with
Punk Ass MBA
Necrotic Nick- LOL
I think this guy acts like a career politician. He thrives on one thing and one thing only "sensationalism". He'll be back in some thrash tabloid way
Perfect take on things Nick. You and Jon and the guys are the real deal. Love your guys' stuff, keep it going! Hails and 🤘 from PA
The Cold Lake of youtubers
You'll catch me listening to Cold Lake from time to time. You won't catch me watching Finn.
Nah, at least Cold Lake has Cherry Orchards
They! Were! Eagles!
I can at least laugh about that album. This guy offers NO humor.
How to vindicate your Haters and create new ones.
That sums it up perfectly.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, I figured that captured the vibe.
He has the audacity to call himself the Punk Rock MBA. Punk Rock GED is more like it.
Necrotic Nick- LOL!
Theres a part of me that sort of thinks this was all a last troll by the dude. A last chance at attention
That's exactly what Finn was doing. He doesn't care anymore since he's done with social media. Why should he care if he pisses everyone off on the way out.
I think it's funny people care this much about a random guys opinions.
McGrifty spent years talking about how terrible gatekeeping is and it turns out he’s a prime example of why gatekeeping is important.
Gatekeeping is unironically hugely important to any scene or fandom. It's just in how and why it's done.
He was a bit of a reversed gatekeeper. Telling you that you should embrace shitty music.
not surprising of him eeither
@@michelvoortman4725 Yeah I watched quite a bit of finns stuff and I hated a lot of his takes. He's the kind of guy to say Billie Eilish is metal just for the piss of it without realizing it's just slowly tearing down the identity of an entire scene.
@@evilbunnysanta But if you are really metal you should embrace Billie Eilish, because she is the future of metal. 😁
I don't care about him but enjoy the spilling of the tea.
BOO THIS MAN! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Necrotic Nick- Who?

Get his ass Nick! 😂🤘
Necrotic Nick- I think I was. I still have a lot of questions about this whole thing.
@DustyEchozy and it will get a TON of views. He knows what he's doing
i bet that's what he thinks but we all know he's just trying to save face. fake till the end 😆
“Went on and on about pantera”
Well there’s your problem right there.
why are people even wondering? do they think the workers at mcdonalds are happy to serve them their burgers? same goes for finn clickbait mckenty. people have this feeling that because its music, there must be some kind of passion involved with it but guess what, music is just as commodified as everything else in society.
"It is kinda on you not to be a giant piece of shit." Words of wisdom.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I try my best to live by that.
McCunty and Music Of Destruction should have done collab. Happy holidays!
That would be epic. Hahahaha.
I might also add that if Fim was never passionate about music all he has done is wasting his time. You can always get a job, you can always make money I do believe that Finn gives zero fucks about music NOW, but to say he never did.puts him in denial of who he is and where he has been.
Finn leaving the TH-cam music sphere is some of the best news of 2024
I was aware of the guy, but never really watched his stuff.
I thought my hate for Finn McShithead was irrational. I've started to realize that im not alone in that feeling
Obviously there was some passion there for at least parts of it like Black Flag and Hatebreed and stuff so he should have just quit like you said and just told people he's over it instead of coming off so cocky.
agree
Out of all the MBA’s I’ve worked with first hand only a couple were standup honest people. MBAs = only a 4.8% favorability rating.
Necrotic Nick- I haven't worked with any so I can't say but I will say that if I worked with Finn I don't think I have much positive to say at this point.
If you love metal so much... what's your favorite metal? Why are you on TH-cam and not in a machine shop or steel mill?
Necrotic Nick- Adamantium but it's really hard to forge with it.
@thrallsofmetal mine is Zinc. A lot of cheap old toys, guns and airguns are made with the zinc alloy zamak, and also "zink" sounds like a low powered obsolete sci Fi blaster going off
ZINKZINKZINK *explosion* ZINK
Necrotic Nick- Maybe. He did get his fair share of views.
Going "YA! GO GET EM!" A music fan at Woodstock 1999 -
Music fan: I'm sick of the fucking backstreet boys on MTV, live.
All through out the 2000's I was like "WTF is going on?"
DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY TIMES I HEARD ALL OF THOSE SONGS?!
It's called the music industry for a reason.
Alright Nick let's go! I'm here for this 😂
I used to be a subscriber to the PRMBA, but when he started pretty much praising Ronnie Radke repeatedly and interviewing people like Jonny Craig, I just had to unsubscribe.
This is sure to damage any possible future endeavors i mean i wouldn't work with him after all that.
Necrotic Nick- I'd have to agree. There's no way this maneuver won't follow him into future endeavors.
Necrotic Nick- I do remember his forays into black metal and man they were rough to watch. The backlash he got on those was well deserved.
@ yup I haven’t watched any other of his videos since
I hit the "Do not recommend channel" tab on that guy long ago.
Finn did a really good episode based on Spazz and Power Violence which he seemed really genuine about because apparently he was a part of that scene
I can't find the original video. Did he take it down?
Necrotic Nick- The video where he makes his admission was on someone else's podcast. I can't remember off hand the name of the channel but I know I've seen the segments in question.
Never mind found it th-cam.com/video/YyYJROxKvVs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=UZj-wFGReqUi08Gd 😂
Watched one video about this and my feed has exploded. People finally see him. Been waiting. He's a hipster with a bruised ego.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, his self-nuking is all the rage when it comes down to the metal/ rock oriented channels right now. I don't think I'd call him a hipster, but I'd definitely call him a poser for sure at this point.
You love to see it. I hope he seeks help because there's something off with him
Necrotic Nick- There might be more going on than we all know yet. I have a feeling more will be made public in the next few months.
Total ragebaiter.
This is the career equivalent of throwing the baby out with the bath water. He could have just made a quiet exit but no. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Totally agree with your take. Finn is a pretentious clown who can’t take any criticism cause his fee fee’s get too hurt. Good riddance.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! If the reason he nuked his channel was because of the negativity then he handled it poorly as well. Letting haters get under your skin to the point you self destruct just means they won.
@@thrallsofmetal exactly!
Never watched this dude’s videos so don’t give a shit. But I’ll say no one questions the integrity of the Thralls crew. Thanks for keeping it real, boys!
Necrotic Nick- Hey! Thanks again, man! My love of heavy music is probably with me forever! Hails, man!
😂 I watched that dude channel one time and knew it was garbage
Necrotic Nick- The earlier stuff was better but it slid pretty quickly.
You guys should do an 80s and 90s rare death metal list one. I've seen alot of them but I bet you can find more gems. 20 years ago I only knew the classics lol.
He’ll come out shortly saying he only said it to get traction etc.
Necrotic Nick- Maybe. I don't think he's going to be welcomed back if he does though.
They call him Finn McKunty for a reason
Necrotic Nick- If they didn't before, they will now lol.
I always thought the guy was a poser and a total fake..
Necrotic Nick- You may have been right.
I literally have no idea who he is until recently. But sounds like he's a pretentious person.
Necrotic Nick- He didn't start off that bad honestly but if it was all just a facade then he's nothing more than a legit poser.
i can kinda understand finn because he is a marketing major liberal who only really cares about superficial metrics, likes, clicks, mainstream success etc etc. he was a slave to the algorithm and had to do mindless content to earn his bread. i def believe he was passionate about his videos once, but trying to please the algorithm kills you in the long run. and talking about mgk for the 100th of time damn...
Finn mcunty
Necrotic Nick- LOL
So how's the economy doing? Up here in Canada we're running a 62 billion dollar deficit, recession incoming.
I watched a couple of his shows. They felt soulless
Necrotic Nick- Again, I think his earlier stuff about the hardcore scenes was pretty solid but it slid in quality quickly.
