  • Zaitsev almost made it to Berlin but was wounded at Seelow Heights in 1945,he quickly recovered and finished the war on the Dniestr. Stalin was interested in Zaitsev and ordered him to write a report,Stalin had this report published in section 1 of the Red Army field manual.
    Zaitsev made a quoate- In Stalingrad the German officer corps was beheaded".
    Bio"-Captain Vassili Grigorevich Zaitsev (Russian: Василий Григорьевич Зайцев) (March 23, 1915December 15, 1991) was a Soviet sniper during World War II, notable particularly for his activities between October 1942 and and January 1943 during the Battle of Stalingrad. He killed 242 soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht and other Axis armies, including 11 enemy snipers, but the real number may be much higher,some argue it might have been as many as 500. Prior to November 10, he had already killed 40 Axis soldiers with the standard-issue Mosin-Nagant rifle. His military rank at the time was Junior Lieutenant.
    Zaitsev was born in Yeleninskoye and grew up in the Ural Mountains. His surname Zaitsev has the same root as the word "hare" (zayats) in Russian. Before going to Stalingrad, he served in the Russian Navy as a clerk but upon reading about the brutality of the fighting in Stalingrad, he volunteered for front-line duty. Zaitsev served in the 1047th Rifle Regiment of the 284th Rifle Division of the 62nd Army. He is notable for having participated in the Battle of Stalingrad. There, Zaitsev set up a snipers' training school in the Metiz factory; it was run by Zaytsev. The snipers Zaytsev trained were nicknamed zaichata, meaning "leverets" (baby hares). Antony Beevor wrote in Stalingrad that this was the start of the "sniper movement" in the 62nd Army. Conferences were arranged to spread the doctrine of "sniperism" and exchange ideas on technique and principles that were not limited to marksmanship skills. It is estimated that the snipers Zaytsev trained killed more than 3,000 enemy soldiers.
    Zaitsev took part in the battle for Stalingrad until January 1943, when he suffered an injury to his eyes from a mortar attack. He was attended to by Professor Filatov, who is credited with restoring his sight. On February 22, 1943 Zaitsev was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. He then returned to the front and finished the war on the Dniestr River with the military rank of Captain. After the end of the war, Zaitsev visited Berlin, where he met friends who served with him. After the war, Zaitsev managed a factory in Kiev, and remained in that city until he died at the age of 76 after suffering from a disease.

      @brandondornan9524 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @Gazzara5 That's actually not entirely accurate. Before the Americans entered the war, they provided weapons, ammo and artillery to the British, because they ran out In early stages of the war. The Russians didn't have very many weapons or ammo. That's why some soldiers were given only rifles and others just ammo without the rifle. The allies owe the Russians for weaking Germany. It was Hitlers cockiness that made him turn on the Soviet union and betray and attack them. That was his biggest mistake in the war. By the time the US joined, the British were losing and the Russians had already turned the tides of the war. Stalin was responsible for 10s of millions of death during his regime. Ordering his officers to kill any who retreated. The Soviet soldiers also did unspeakable horror to the Polish after the war was won. But they were extremely strong soldiers! They fought very well for as little as they had!

      @@transnistria4237 Allies, were Britian, France, Canada and Australia, a few other countries. Stalin would of been happier if Hitler never turned on him, he would of been apart of the Axes if Hitler let him. Russia were our "allie" because they had no other choice. Though, allies never sent troops or weapons to back them up. They were entirely on their own. It was the Russians who weakened the Nazi's far before we entered the war. The British were barely staying a float, because they still had an excellent airforce, and we were supplying them with weapons, pilots, and ammunition. The Nazi's defeated France (the most powerful military in world at the time), in 6 weeks. Hitler embarrassingly underestimated the Russians and the Russian climate.

    He did what he had to do to repel an armed invasion of his homeland, and his expert marksmanship and skills using what even then was a rather marginal rifle (the Mauser 98 that the Germans used was and still is a superb rifle) are the gold standard aspired to by all snipers today.
    You can bet that Carlos Hathcock and Chris Kyle new his name well and studied every aspect of his tactics and marksmanship in minute detail.

Koning was also there in WW1 as documents were found in Normany in 1944 that belonged to Erwin Koning stating that he was a sniper instructor outside Berlin. During WW2 German prisoners of war told Captain Batyuk that Koning was being flown in. Zaitsev's wife said that after Koning was killed Russian soldiers went to collect the documents from the bodies of the dead German snipers, those documents went through thorough verification by the intelligence officers who credited them as reliable. Also in a post-war military meeting, Zaitsev was asked by German civilians about the famous duel when he started to speak a lady shouted and told that she was the daughter of Koning and everything he was about to say was a lie. Zaitsev was taken away for security purposes.The scope of Koning is still in a museum in Moscow and was the trophy of that duel.

      Thank you very much for that info. I knew that Koening's existence was disputed & unprovable according to some sources. Never knew about the Russians verifying his papers as being authentic. Never knew about Koening's daughter's outburst. Guess I'm spelling Konig's name wrong, oh well I'll do better next time. Thanks again.

      I have much respect for Zaitsev and he was a true hero. However, the German records ARE accessible and so is the copy in the USA at NARA in MD. There was no sniper Major Koning who was supposedly flown into Stalingrad to duel him. Zaitsev did kill many German soldiers and a number of them were snipers, but the story about Koning is an embellishment.

    • @mk18397
      @mk18397 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      How did his documents end up in Normandy two years after he allegedly passed? In his book Zaitsev doesn't say when this duel occured (which he always mentioned before) and said a top sniper made the simple mistake to fall for a (bad) decoy and victim to reflecting sunlight. This is very unlikely for a professional and experienced sniper to fall victim to so it sounds like propaganda to me.

  • @clarencemendonca579

    I am very much behind the times. Nevertheless, better late than never. The climax of a nerve wrenching one to one between Vassili Zaitsev and Major Koenig may be thrilling to witness from the sanctuary of your armchair at home, but in reality this duel gives us a fair idea of what the withdrawing Germans and the Russians had to contend with in the events leading upto the Germans final surrender at Stalingrad.
    Brilliant performances by Jude Law and Ed Harris, in 'Enemy at the Gates', make it possible to experience almost first hand the horrors of War.

    Read what the men who served with him have to say,Zaitsev was a legend amongst them and they respected him. Which is why when Zaitsev was wounded in 1945,They took his sniper rifle and put a plaque on it "To Hero of the Soviet Union Vassili Zaitsev,who buried over 300 fascists in Stalingrad" and presented it to Zaitsev in Berlin after the war. They saw and knew he was a brave hero with their own eyes.

    This guy Zaitsev is the reason Russia beat Germany. The very ideal of what manhood means. The Nazis thought the Russians were inferior, but as Goebbels wrote, "they're better than we are."

    • @Gunners_Mate_Guns
      @Gunners_Mate_Guns 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Mosin Nagant (the rifle you're intending to buy) is a perfectly good hunting rifle, capable of taking any animal in North America (and all of the animals in Africa with the exception of the big five of elephant, cape buffalo, and rhinoceros) except for the Grizzly bear.
      Just be sure to buy ammo with softpoint bullets, as most of the ammo that's out there for the 7.62x54R round the Mosin is chambered in is full metal jacket, which is inhumane for hunting because it doesn't expand.

    • @DYLANJJK94
      @DYLANJJK94 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks and full metal jackets are illegal here always (Canada) and they are designed for war and to wound so that more soldiers are occupied with saving the soldier who got shot than having to spend bullets on those other soldiers. :)

The German sniper made rookie mistakes and its doubtful an officer whould go into combat dressed or with documents revealing him as an officer. Major's and above go into combat dressed as ordinary enlisted men.

      Thing is, I already knew about Zaitsev BEFORE I watched that movie. My great grandfather always talked about him (he was a hardcore communist, served in the Red Army when they invaded Berlin and defeated the Nazis)
      I already knew that his kills may have been a product of propaganda, before I even knew the movie existed. After watching the movie, I did even more research on him.
      My point being, I didn't learn about him through watching the movie. There is a lot of inaccurate history and misinformation in it. So much so, that even the Call of Duty franchise made fun of it (World at War) [and no, I didn't learn about him through the video game either- he's not even mentioned in it]

      @all_the_bad_news5614 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well unfortunately most historians agree with the fact that this story was made up for propaganda purposes not to say this man didn't defend his country bravely or take anything away from him it's just the overwhelming facts of the case this particular story seems to be pure propaganda but he surely did a lot of damage to the Germans in Stalingrad and those are facts as well history is not all black and white it's a mostly gray area written by the victors and from their point of view which leaves much to be told usually or some times too much being told such as this case where the facts have probably been embellished a bit in order to bring up the spirits of his country men.

    Wasn't just Panzers that needed to cross the channel.Horse-drawn transportation was most important for Germany. Infantry and horse-drawn artillery formed the bulk of the German Army throughout the war; only one-fifth of the Army belonged to mobile panzer and mechanized divisions. Each German infantry division employed thousands of horses. Despite losses of horses to enemy action, exposure and disease, Germany maintained a steady supply of work and saddle horses until 1945. They needed a bridge.
