Came to comment after getting back into it - they really improved a lot again from a few months ago. Currently 20ish hours into my new Open World and just got the new stone base up and running and unlocked tier 3. The game is still a bit slower paced solo but the sense of progression and owning what you build up to is really satisfying and palpable. Still need to get into the arctic and desert areas soon too.

Great run down, just the sort of information I was after. I agree they need to do away with ha ing unlock missions out of the open world, if it was a mission in the world then I could get around that.
I'm thinking about buying this game as I love the genre and seeing permanent open World addded, but I can see some problems that maybe you can clarify. What is actual goal, I mean on Conan Exiles you level up, build, Craft and tame but you progress through map difficulty, there are bosses, some dungeons. What is the general goal here? Are there Amy reasons to Explore map, are there new resources to be found to further evolve im game? Are there only Bears, wolves and crocs your enemies?
Hey there, as the game stands you can play two ways, missions or open world, they are a bit linked as seen in this video but are still different. The core game is still missions, drop down, collect some things or do something and get a reward, the rewards allows you to purchase better gear. Your character levels up as you go....with the missions they are very linear, the open world less so of course. Reasons to explore the map? Yes, to get / find certain resources and animals but it isn't like conan exiles. Enemies? Well the main ones you've listed, there are some bosses to fight which are fun - for me this game will come to life when the next DLC is launched which will be to explore very alien parts of the planet and them being very hostile. I've seen in their update notes you can see them working on things for this, not sure when it will come out though.
No, not yet, but they keep expanding the open world side and are trying to "incorporate" the missions more seamlessly (I.e. they happen around you). Look the good thing about this game is they update it every two weeks I think, keep everyone informed - it is a top notch example of that. Thanks for the watch.

For tames there is a "follow" and and "stay" command in the animals inventory. The usually only ignore those commands when they are hungry/thirsty and you have water/food available nearby.

Great video, I've been playing a bit and haven't done the missions, as I started when Open World was released. This is not your average Ark. I've had that, "Shit, where is the pause button cause I just shit my pants." My first alpha mission, the short ones, was labeled Easy. That bear wasn't easy, so I am not doing those as much as I should, but I am level 38 & just moved my base. I started in Ring Lake, where I died 3 times just spawning in. A real challenge. I am not based where I should be, I don't have tames yet, but need to do that.
Nice, I'm glad you are enjoying the game. I see that they are starting, with some of the patch files, preparing for some DLC - like maybe a very hostile alien part of the planet to explore. That will be super fun.
if you have problems fighting bears you can just step to the side when its charging at you or if you struggle with that approach use beams to get above it
Is this the type of survival game where you have to collect tons and tons of resources just to build a basic building like in the forest or is it something like subnautica where you generally need only a pocket full of items to get going?
It depends on what you are building. Wood an stone are pretty easy, above that things get harder. For 90% of the game you only really need stone. However if you wish to invest time into it there are many more building options, like glass, concrete, aluminium...
I always find the starting of survival games the most exciting. I like the way the game forced you to do that aspect. Too many of these games start off fun for me, but eventually you build enough stuff you never worry about food, shelter, etc. I understand many people look forward to that in these games, but there is a choice of literally every other game in the genre that would satisfy that. Only Icarus had the loop that made you experience the starting loop again and again. Instead of people wanting to turn the game into something it isn't (and plenty of other games are already), I think once you realize the core game isn't what you were wanting you could just move on to one of the dozens of well polished games that do that. My only big complaint was combat, I just wish there was a bit more block/dodge/ type things. Melee feels weird to me. On top of all of that, you were complaining that the game doesn't offer enough challenge, but I definitely found typically in missions it did since you start weak and work your way up.
Thanks Harkonis for the well thought out comment, I appreciate what you are saying, but I guess a video review is a like a movie review - the rating you give it always has a distinct personal preference aspect.
Do the Deco Furniture or Solar panels take Weather Damage? Also, if you have Bio Fuel & Solar does the bio last longer with the Solar providing most of the power during the day? Solar is so expensive, not wanting to waste mats if its just getting destroyed like the 2 bio gens i lost due to lightening strikes, back 2 back
Building looks amazing man, so cozy. I have the game but I'm really early game. How would you say the best / easiest progression path is? Open world - mission - open world etc? I'm not sure what to do to progress, I'm currently just running around pretty much cluelessly in my world, making wooden bases and don't really know how to move forward or when or where to settle. Cheers, really liking the videos, super chill. Looking forward to more Icarus content :)
There is a big patch due shortlyish - making the game even more open world. For me, personally, pick Styx and do open world, do the missions that you can, and if required jump out and do other one off missions....I think the next patch is for Olympus open world (I think)...then the game is really rocking. Settle close to caves and near water to start. Don't do anything thatch, skip that altogether and get to stone as soon as possible. FYI - I move around games a bit, mostly survival...I'm coming back to ICARUS in a bit, just doing a couple of others at the moment, and of course I need to play them for a while (40 - 80 hrs generally) before I can do a review or similar, so my videos come out slowly - ha. I was loving this game with the open world on the new map until I found out you still had to do the missions outside the open world. I had gone exploring and couldn't get back to my base. That really killed my interest since it was the new map that I had zero missions done on.
Isnt it sad how such a great game can have just the most bonehead appendages. Dumb shit that you have to do in order to play the way that you want. I’m talking about that mission shit… I heard the fans had to hold a gun to the devs head to make them make this open world. Jeez.
Well, not quite. The Devs had a goal focus, and stuck to it, but over time realized they needed to change. An upcoming big patch will make the game pretty open world, so good on them for changing really, it was more they had a type of game they wanted to deliver and stuck to that but realized it wasn''t working. Dean Hall is pretty agile in his thinking.
so u are kind of obligated to do missions in single player or a different world tipe thing .. to be able to have full acces to open world gameplay ? the 2 quest you mentioned around 9 min in the review.
That may have just changed with the latest release, unfortunately I'm overseas and unable to play and check for myself. They are moving to open world proper now after all the feedback, which is great.
Nice video. That typed, I don't think it's possible for Icarus to pull off a "No Man's Sky". Sadly, it's not going to happen. Fingers crossed, I'm wrong (but we're talking core mechanics).
you are right about the missions and it not really being a "Open" world. I started in Ring Lake (middle sector of N8) and one of the first missions I got after making the mission board was to go to the Frozen Tundra (sector M6), but you can't get there. The bottom left corner of sector M8 shows a opening on the map that looks like the mountain has a pass through it, but when I got there it was just a solid wall. The game was fun for awhile, but can't do much now because my mission is unobtainable. Great video and I hope to comeback to the game after the Devs find a work around.
Yeah, I think the "fun for a while..." is spot on. This game I still think has great potential but is a work in progress and they've put way too many resources into a dead(ish) development pathway.
I still think they are still at the early stages of no man's sky, still bugs that was there a year ago, cave worms spawning behind walls, items still falling through the floor. I don't like that they are forcing you to do missions to unlock parts of the open world. To me it's not open world if you have to do that. Great vid
For me, the weakest part of Icarus has always been the premise. It's a game about fighting mundane wolves and bears in a forest, except it's another planet (which happens to look 100% like Earth), and you are a sci-fi prospector sent in a futuristic space pod, but your technology is limited to sticks and stones because reasons. It's pure nonsense.
The idea is based on early explorers who may have gone on a big ship, with all sorts of things on board, but once they arrive in the new lands they are left to their own devices. But yes it is a bit far fetched.
It’s not nonsense at all. Icarus is a failed. Hostile. Unhabitable planet. You are a highly trained survival prospector. Trained to craft anything you need on the world given it’s resources. Sending a man by himself. Saves thousands of pounds of fuel. A thousand pounds of fuel for a thousand prospectors is a million pounds of fuel. That’s just the fuel. Not the resources. Number of pods. Size of the pods. It’s actually pretty based in reality. To settle even Mars. The first REAL attempts to colonise that shit hole are going to be one way trips. With just the bare basics to settle the ground works for the next mission. Otherwise the human race and earth simply doesn’t have the fuel and resources to achieve even a colony. Let alone a self sustaining one. The levels and exotics etc are just for game progression and playability. The situation is YOU and the planet are the asset in the lore. How many people do you know can craft a computer? Build an engine? So that computer, that engine, that building didn’t have to be flown all the way from earth at huge expense. No one. The game makes sense. Space exploration needs sacrifices. That means you get the kit and no way home or you get a way home and no kit. Icarus is just a perspective on that
I personally am fine with the premise. You need to watch "No Rescue" for the story. As you complete prospects you can bring better gear down to Icarus as you unlock them. Icarus was terraformed using the only DNA available, Earth's, thus Icarus starting zones resemble Earth biomes.
Also if you miss the pod to go back up they can never ever come get you ever never ever... oh look they are sending another pod down. Nope you can't get back, just dead. Geez they could of at least made up some time dilation device that only works for a set amount of time, I dunno.
I agree that the progression is not very realistic when first starting out but I feel like every good survival needs a Stone Age or some version of it. A lot of the tech really comes out later on and it’s cool going through all the eras of progression but I can see how most people just want to get to the cool stuff. The weather system alone is what got me interested, and I actually do enjoy the mission based extraction gameplay but glad they’re pushing for more persistence at the same time
I don't know why but i love games where we are able to be stuck by lightning😂😂. Gives it more realism however i doubt people get struck as much as we can in a game😂😂
I understand there's timetables and such that needed to be met but this goes to show that Icarus released a year too soon. Yes, headed in the right direction for sure, but imagine if this is where it started off.
Is the "open world" of Icarus randomly generated, or does it use static maps? Are item drops, weather, encounters, etc. all randomly generated? I also think the cutting mechanism (harvesting dead animal, chopping wood/trees) looks awful.
They are pre-drawn maps, which means they are very pretty but you do get to know them. Weather is random(ish) it changes at roughly known intervals and I think they've just made it so the bad weather can last longer. The tree chopping mechanism actually works very well and is better than most games. The basic survival mechanics are very good and I'm looking forward to when they bring out the more alien parts of the world, that's when this game will find its feet more, and if they can move away from the missions more.
I like a lot of aspects of this game and played it when it first came out.. then they wiped characters and progress. My issue with this is that the game was sold as a RELEASED game, not early access. Yet everything they have done from release til now is what early access games do. They ARE in EA, just lying to themselves and us about it. Also the combat system is so bad. I dont need cutting edge but its difficult to look past such a low effort combat system =/ No dodge, no block, no strategy. Just kite and deal with terrible hit boxes and shoot / bow everything. Most kills are 1 shot head shots from stealth where arrows magically curve and hit them right in the head. Im torn between playing and removing the game and punching myself for thinking about playing hehe
Gating open world play is a bad design choice. I have had this game for some time, though not played in a whiles cause I wanted the open world style of play. But now seeing its got an unlock wall in the poor mission side of things, I will continue to keep this game shelved. Was promising, but its just not there... yet!

It's funny living in NZ I wanted to go to their studio and sit down with them and vent my concerns, but not my place to do that. They are trying.
I still think they are still at the early stages of no man's sky, still bugs that was there a year ago, cave worms spawning behind walls, items still falling through the floor. I don't like that they are forcing you to do missions to unlock parts of the open world. To me it's not open world if you have to do that. Great vid
Thanks Charlie - good to hear a like soul.
Ha. I think there are a few people who've been struck by lightning a few times and lived. But I think it damages them...
@mattymojo oh yea definitely. Just the chances of being struck multiple times is very rare especially in a 10 minute period😆😆
I would love to be able to do the big missions from the open world, even if they become a lot more difficult.
I just came here to decide if I wanted to buy the game and then I get hit with Carl Sagan.
Brian Cox, but close. 😁
Shit! I should start listening and stop letting my brain making connections.
Carl Sagan was "Look at that dot."
@@TheOnlyFMP I love both and yes we all leap to make connections - like string theory. Ha. Nah - I don't know anything about that!

@@TheOnlyFMP Yes, one of the best dialogues ever. Legend man.
I understand there's timetables and such that needed to be met but this goes to show that Icarus released a year too soon. Yes, headed in the right direction for sure, but imagine if this is where it started off.
100% - it didn't take long for us originals did it Rough to spot where it needed to go - it's taken them too long. But fingers crossed.
@@mattymojo If they adopt the ability to generate random maps, .all in.
Was promising, but its just not there... yet!
damn what a vid
"Open World" but you have to leave the game to do a Mission and then come back
Though I see they are going to change that soon.
@@mattymojo Yeah I agree with you it takes you out of the immersion
Thats awesome they will change and listen to the community
