AWD! RYOBI Lawn Mower Review - 40V HP 21" Whisper Series Self Propelled

  • Why have a two-wheel drive when you can have an All-Wheel Drive (AWD)?! This new 40V HP RYOBI Lawn Mower has plenty of power from the 40-volt batteries and brushless motor. Locked into AWD, the 21" blade blazes a trail wherever you want. You get up to 70 minutes of runtime and up to 3/4 of an acre, which we test in the video. RYOBI warranties the RY401210 lawnmower for 5-years, the deck is covered for a lifetime, and the batteries are covered for 3-years.

Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

How come reviewers only demonstrate on rough, semi-scrubby lawns? How about a green dense lawn where you can evaluate the even cut height and professional coverage. There's a bit that goes into an effective deck design paring with the blade. It's great that these can handle rough, slightly over-grown spaces - but, that's just part of the story.

I would prefer to deal with the possibility of grass buildup on the mulching lever track over the dumb mulching plug that can get lost and really don’t really work all that well!

Just bought this to mow a hilly, rough yard with lots of obstacles. The mower has a very solid feel, seems to be built very robustly, even though most of it is plastic. The controls and buttons are all labelled and easy to figure out. Cuts great, and is very quiet indeed.
The AWD feature is a big winner, it climbs steep hills effortlessly. No more pushing the mower up hills like I have to do with my Toro RWD gas mower.

Hey man. I've watched a few of your videos now. I have been running the ryobi 40v system for my lawn business. Your reviews are pretty spot on. I like how you don't have a real bias 1 way or another, and just give the facts. That whisper series is my next mower purchase. If I lived closer to a Rona instead of a home depot I most likely would be running EGO. That's how close I honestly think the competition is. I have the single blade 21 inch push mower, and that thing is a beast, so I can only imagine the newer, whisper series mower will be a slightly different level. I'm looking forward to it. Thank you.

Along with your speed comment I’ve stuck with the push version of the standard Ryobi 40V 21in mower. The tandem battery style. It’s been awesome. For how light these mowers are you really can’t go wrong. Obviously does better on batteries too since you’re not having the motors use the batteries

I was on the fence between this Ryobi, the 21" Makita, and the M18 Milwaukee. Rulled out the Milwaukee due to it's ridiculous $1100 price. Steered away from this Ryobi due to the deck issues with previous models. Bought the Makita and am quite happy. It's 100 lbs weight gives a very level cut. The 18v batteries can be used in any Makita tool, not just their OPE products. The handle of this Ryobi sounded flimsy and rattles in this video. The Makita handle is non-collapsible and rock solid. Thanks for this excellent review. I will have to go back through your previous videos as I just discovered your channel. Thank you!

I was hoping to see a review from you before I bought this! I'm gonna go with the rear wheel drive model since I do want self propelled, but I don't really need all wheel drive. Ill be replacing one of the original 40v 20inch push mowers with this one, this one seems to be build way better than my current one, my current one has wobbling wheels and the screws that hold the handles on have to be tightened each time I mow (I've seen several other people having the same issue with my current model) since ill be upgrading to this one, ill be gifting my old one to my neighbor since she really liked it whenever she borrowed it, I've gotten a pretty solid 3 years out of it and its just time to upgrade and have a little more power and what seems to be a much cleaner cut! Thanks for your awesome review! Ill be doing my own review soon :)

I am really baffled that Milwaukee didn’t use some of the features of this mower. Such as the lever to fold the unit and the lever for the mulch door. The Milwaukee mulch plug is pretty weak and has gaps. Lots of grass gets past it. Pretty disappointing that a lower tier tool brand has nicer features than Milwaukee. And pretty much sucking everything out like a vacuum cleaner. Just for that area I would love to use a turbo mode and run blades on the maximum speed but the maximum speed and turbo mode turns on ONLY when there is a resistants ! Good review. I now have this on hand, but I found unlike the self-propelled model 3 years ago (RY401012VNW) or the latest Greenworks Pro 80V, this latest Ryobi model RY401210 does not seem to allow its self-propel feature to cruise silently. I mean from storage to the job site, when the job is finished, or the battery runs low, I can't rely on the self-propel feature to help pushing WITHOUT the blade running. That's a bummer !!
By the way, Ryobi should improve its Quick Charger. In Texas when it's easily 85++ degrees outside during day time, the battery runs pretty warm after the run. Ryobi quick charger OP406 refuses to work on them before battery cools down. I saw charger from other brand(s) has fan inside to assist cooldown of the battery and the charger while working. Such charger can run louder (and charge cycle could be longer,) but won't refuse charging when the battery just finish one hot run.

    • @heydae3
      @heydae3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1. Use the key to toggle between the two batteries to ensure it does not get hot. It's better for the life of the battery. And you get more consistent power since you lose power when the battery runs hot.
      2. You can use self propelled without the blades turning. Pull the lever and thumb without starting the blades. You have to start from when the mower is off

Is the speed control lever variable speed depending on how far it is pushed down? I know it has that max speed slider control, but beyond that.
Also, I was impressed with it all until you said it does not freewheel when the drive is not engaged. You can save alot of battery if pushing manually, especially downhill sections of a lawn.

I know the Milwaukee is made of better materials, likely has more power, starts up instantly in high then throttles down to low and is likely a better mower all around. But honestly I love the sound of this thing starting up. It seems so silly and stupid but I would honestly trade the instant start up of the Milwaukee for the cool jet engine spooling noise the Ryobi makes. The one thing I wish Ryobi would add is the manual speed switch. Milwaukee has this, please Ryobi, please please please add this ability at some point in the future! I dislike having to wait for it to spool up to the higher speed when I know thick grass is coming. Please Ryobi! Please let me decide if I want to control the speed manually or leave it in auto!

I just checked how much those mowers go for in Australia. They want Au$1299 (US$857.34) and it only has 36 volt batteries, here (in Australia). My Bosch Rotak 37Li mower uses 36v batteries. They just don't have enough power to cut through dense grass like Buffalo, Couch or Kijuyu. The mower just stops, like it's hit a tree stump.
Ideally, the mower should have at least 50v to power through the kind of grasses we have, here.

I have a ton of live oak (small and thick) leaves at the house I'm moving to this week. Wondering if when walking at a slow pace if it is powerful enough to raise those leaves and get them to the grass catcher. Excellent job 👏 Tim!!! I am glad you did this review. I will be sticking with my Honda HRX . The Ryobi mower looks very innovative but it also looks very "toylike" and "plastic--eey".

my concern is about finding parts for these mowers and is this mower built to withstand a small drop. then if something breaks what to do

    • @Shoptoolreviews

I think the mower should withstand a drop, but that doesn't mean much. My understanding is that parts will be available through Home Depot for repair. Thanks for watching.

I have a new Toro lithium, it sucks, drive wheel fell off in 2nd hour, battery shorts, and on-line Toro will not take it back. They do not take items back if you use it for 1 minute! Their rear left geared wheel unbolts itself from the bracket, it self destructs! Two others have the same problem. Their repair dealer literally told me "with Toro, its Buyer Beware". I have a Toro case number, a BBB case number, and a US Consumer Product Safety Commission case number. Save yourself and learn from my mistake, and stay away from Toro.
