I just want to leave a quick UPDATE: After using the pen for several days and walking it over some micro mesh it is now one of the best and wettest writers in my bunch!
That's great to hear! I too gave up my discrimination against flashy pens and fell so in love with Benu pens after my first purchase that I now have over 10!😮 But I love each of them and find them all so smooth. So glad you found the adjustment it needed. I'd love to see a video of you doing the adjustment if you recorded it. I have a few pens that need help but I'm afraid to try. 😊
Yes, then you should get the gourmetpens exclusive True Unicorn. It's amazing! And I can definitely recommend, even though it didn't sound very convincing on the video.
I have several Benu pens and most are in the Medium nib, which writes perfect every time. I did buy one in a fine, which was scratchy, so going forward will always buy the medium or broad
I bought a Cult Pens exclusive Benu, Celebration in fine a couple of weeks ago and I am anxiously awaiting it. I hope it is smooth but I might take it to our local pen show in March to get it tuned if not. I hope yours writes smoother soon!
Happy Birthday! I love the BENU pens. I finally broke down and got the Talisman Shooting Star LE, and then the Talisman Ice and Snow, and then the Euphoria in Love Story, and then the Euphoria 2023 New Year LE. I adore them all. My last one, the Euphoria 2023, wasn't quite as smooth as the others, but still decent and wet. I may tune it a bit with my micro mesh as well.
I can absolutely see myself going down that same rabbit hole. I am enjoying writing with these pens and nibs so much more than with other steel nib pens.
Happy birthday! I cannot believe your will power keeping that pen and NOT USING IT. I love the pen you chose. My Benu has got to be one of the most ostentatious models they make, but I'm a fairly ostentatious person. I love seeing the Benu next to the Kaweco. It's like big sibling little sibling. 😄So glad you got the nib working better. :)
The BENU Euphoria Jazz was my first BENU. I picked it because it had less bling, and the black band didn't stand out as much. 12 BENU pens later with lots of sparkle... All so far have been smooth and wet. All have been Fine except one Medium. It was SO wet and broad, I bought a replacement nib in Fine so I wouldn't have to keep the switching nib with a different pen when I wanted to use it. Most (but not all) of the Euphoria models have black bands, especially the earlier models. Most of the smaller Talisman models have different coloured bands.
I have several Benu Pens in various models and nib sizes. Like all pens, the nibs can vary in how they are tuned in the factory. Sometimes they need work, sometimes not. I have one medium that writes like a fine and others that are spot on. One problem you are probably experiencing in this initial inking while filming is that the feed is probably not completely saturated. That ink appears somewhat dry and coupled with the paleness of the writing makes a less than stellar experience. Experiment with an ink you know is wetter and see how you feel. It is easy to buy replacement Benu nibs and fun to have the option of other nib widths.
I bought a Benu after Kerry's rave. I don't love the black sections but as you've noted, a lot of the new ones have matching sections ( my Pomegranate Wine one was a North American exclusive, I think). It was almost sold out so I had to get a broad nib, which is incredibly smooth but too big for me. I swapped it out to a TWSBI fine nib and we've been happy ever since.
I have quite a few Benu pens. The Talisman and Euphoria are the only two models I like personally. The others I don’t enjoy as much. I have F, M and B. All mine are smooth and they are such wet writers. I’m glad you love yours after tweaks. Some nibs just need some love. Do you have any Laban pens? Got one recently and amazingly smooth. Happy birthday 🎉❤
This was my first one - luckily what you saw was just the first impression. I'm in love now and am thinking about getting another one for my next pen purchase!
Such a beautiful pen! And thanks for the Fine nib demonstration! A lot of Benu owners chose the Medium so it's nice seeing someone with it. I'm really torn with same model that you have, the Love Story and Edelweiss. Gonna wait on sale and make it an end of year purchase. And hey! Happy super belated birthday! Thoughts on the pen after using it for awhile?
Thank you very much! I got a great deal on this during the Black Friday sale at Atlas Stationers. Yes, I still love the fine nib. I now have two Benu pens with medium nibs and they are ok, but this fine nib is impressive because it is still very wet while placing a nice fine line onto the paper. I'm currently debating on getting another fine nib so I can replace one of the medium nibs. The Euphoria has turned out to be my favorite Benu model, it fits nicely into my hand, the pen is long enough without posting it and the section is comfortable to hold.
I have two Benus. One is a Hexagon with the smaller #5 Schmidt iridium nib, and the other is the Vodka on the Rocks version (same model as yours) with the larger #6 nib. They always start right away and are smooth, but the nibs are very rigid and not flexible. They're light so are good utilitarian pens. I think the most appealing thing about them is the aesthetic. They're lovely to look at - kind of a 3 dressed up as a 9. Or maybe mutton dressed up as lamb. Happy belated birthday! I love the look of your pen.
Thanks so much for the comment - I think that's just what you get when using a steel nib: quite a stiff writing experience. But for that they are excellent.
🎉Happy [belated] Birthday! 🎂 Sorry I'm a little late to the party. I agree with Maria - incredible willpower! There's no way I would have been able to resist and for 2 months no less?! Don't think so... Maybe for 2 days! 😄 Kerry was definitely the one who inspiredy me to try Benu and I'm so happy I did. I loved/love the first one so much, I now have 4 (2 Euphorias, a Talisman and a Briolette model) and I'm eyeing my 5th! 😁 My experience with Benu has been a very positive one overall but the Briolette model which was the last one I purchased was scratchy. Of course I was a little disappointed because the others were so perfect out of the box but, like you, I used a little micromesh and it's perfect now. So happy you were able to make the adjustment and that you're now enjoying your birthday pen! ☺️
Thank you so much for the birthday wishes. Yes, waiting to ink up and use these pens was so not me. I definitely surprised myself. I'm so in love with this pen now that I am thinking of adding another Benu to my collection in March.
Happy Birthday! I just bought myself a Benu for my upcoming birthday in March but have to wait till I get to my Mom's in California to pick it up! Hope you can sort your nib. Maybe it is like the TWSBI and it will get smoother as you go.

I just bought the Euphoria Bourbon (because of Pens & Tea :P) in Broad...I am inking it up next. It's my first Broad nib for any fountain pen (I used to only buy Extra Fine and Fine)....hoping it will be a smooth writer as well. Happy Birthday. I hope you are able to smooth your nib to make it a much better experience for your birthday pen, dear.
Thanks so much for the birthday wishes! I was able to solve all my issues and it's now so wet and smooth. I hope you have a great writing experience with your new broad nib. I currently own one broad nib and it's not love yet.
Happy Birthday Seemownay! ♥ These BENUs are just so pretty! Congrats on your birthday pen to yourself :D I'm sorry that it's scratchy when you were doing those line tests. I also hate it when my Sailor MF nib pens are scratchy and lay barely any ink when I do either up strokes, upward diagonal strokes, or right to left strokes, it really bugs me! But I have seen that mesh papers can reduce that issue? And I wonder if it is the Fine nib that made that nib not write as smooth, but even a Fine should be smooth if the whole brand is known for very smooth nibs. My favorite model is the Talisman Edelweiss, and I need to buy an M nib to replace the B nib I have in it xD I suggest trying a more saturated ink since it is a fine nib...yuki-akari as you stated, seems to be very light so it might run a tad bit drier than other Sailor inks, but I'm sure you'll let us know your discoveries when you get to them!
I haven't really gotten that deep into tuning nibs, if I wanted to correct those specific things I would probably see if I could find more videos/websites with in depth instructions. After the first disappointment I gave the pen another chance. I was able to get rid of the scratchiness super easily and the feed just wasn't saturated well enough. It's so smooth and wet now.
Happy birthday! Your pen is beautiful 😍 Definitely one of the most subtle Benu pens I've seen. I ordered the Celebration color way from Cult Pens when it went 25% off and my specific pen is quite flashy. Thanks for the review, I am also tempted to try the Benu. Hopefully this is just a nib issue and can be resolved. Certainly worth getting back to the shop to swap it, I have done this successfully a number of times. 🙂
Thanks so much for your comment, David. Yes, it was a combination of a slightly scratchy nib that I was able to fix and just waiting for the feed to be fully saturated with ink. It's now such a lovely wet and smooth writer.

So, got Vodka on the Rocks in a fine, and it’s very smooth, nicely wet, with just a touch of feedback. Perfect.
