In April 2018 I commissioned the Parker 15PSI atmospheric boiler for the distillery. I was allowed to tour the entire place with my co-worker. It was not open yet as they had just recently started the renovation. The restaurant was being worked on and there were people in the prison working on rust remediation and clean up. I got a different explanation of "D" block than what I have heard in other videos as inmates at times were left out there as punishment when it was cold. I returned in 2020 to PM the boiler and it was remarkable how it had all turned out. I retired in 2023 and moved back west before ever being assigned to go out there again. Nice video.
I think I saw an episode of MSNBC Lockup about this place. I remember the guard saying they had to be extra careful to check for hidden weapons above the doors and stuff because, being an old building, there were tons of little nooks and crannies in the walls to hide stuff. Was this the place that had all the cats walking around the yard and prisoners would adopt them?
Wow! Love the stories about this place! Hadn’t heard about cats there but a deer fell off one of the cliffs into the yard and became a pet/mascot for years. 👍😃
@@BestLifeAdventureChannel I'm actually not sure if it was this prison that had the cats. It might've been a different one. I saw it on an episode of MSNBC Lockup.
@@BestLifeAdventureChannel I just looked it up. There are a few clips from that episode on TH-cam, but I'm not sure if the whole thing is posted and I'm not sure if all the clips about Kentucky are about Brushy Mountain, since they don't refer to it as that, in most of them.
i visited here with my wife 5 years ago toured it and it was nice the day we were there an inmate we met who spent time here, told us about some of the horrors behind these walls. we ate at the restaurant decent food reasonbly priced. a must see!!!
We love to hear about everyone's experiences, thank you for sharing that. We really would have liked to have been able to sit down with some of the former inmates and guards who now act as guides but we just didn't have the time we needed to really do that the right way. What do you think, should we do another video and include their stories? 😀👍
Knew a man years ago ...young man mid 30s ....and had known him for few years when one day he told me when he was 17 he got involved in something he souldnt .....and had spent some time at brushy .....said day one walking thre the gated chain lenght fence in the front of the prison ....the mowing crew had just finished mowning ....said he was almost about to take his first step towards the inside of the prison on the guards comand when one of the mowing crew ( trustee) hit another one dead center of the forhead with the blade off his push mower ....buddy said blood spayed him on his cheek ......the blow killed the man insanity....said it near split the mans head into 2 pieces .....17and half years old sentenced as an adult ....imagine that being your first day in prison .....this was the answer i got when i ask him why he was always so quite ....never spoke much ....he told this was why ....
I live 45 min away from brushy mountain state prison and I’ve toured it before. I’ll have to say I learned several things by watching your video. Thank you.
Thank you! There was so much more that we wanted to add in the video but we really didn't want to make it too long. Maybe we'll go back sometime and do a deeper dive. 👍😀
I did 3 years, then 10 years, then 35 years, at Brushy, alot of what is said here is wrong. I still keep prison ID card, just so I will never forget, nor never return.
People could really get out of that place if they was from Tennessee Virginia and West Virginia especially the people who are familiar with mountains wouldn’t be as hard as it looks.
It’s a really unique place, you should definitely see it with a guide. 👍😃. We’ll like be back there again in March for the Southeast Overland Camping Expo.
Cool vid..... On my bucket list..... Thabnks for sharing !!!!! see ya at MOORE ! P.S. Just curious. did they let you walk about on your own? or did you have to stay with the tour?
Thanks! So the prison was actually closed to the public but was open to those of us who were attending the Southeast Overland Camping Event. If you’re not familiar with that event, we did this video th-cam.com/video/HpNEtOCPqQ0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ESJcPj9BfMg2TZ6k We paid a few bucks to do a self guided tour which was cool but we would have liked to have also taken a guided tour because those are done by former guards and prisoners who were there when it was open. We also found out that they do some overnight tours where they leave you there alone … they lock you in at dark and then let you out in the morning. How crazy would that be? Maybe we should get a group of crazy folks together and make one hell of an awesome video! 😂😃👍
I remember in late 90's early 2000's having to drive from Nashville every time federal ordered cameras crashed. Brushy is where IMs' learned to behave if other prisons were not able to teach them. Some of the teaching lessons caused need for cameras.
Forgot to say. Cameras could record for 35 to 45 minutes after power lost. Over time I switched out tapes. Did have some examples of why Judges ordered the cameras. Both staff & IM's starting trouble. Staff always won
I’ve wondered about that. The only place you can look down on the building is from the hills. From there, the cross wouldn’t be upside down. Just a thought … 😃👍
Great video Dave! Oh yeah, I was out of there like flash!
Thank you buddy! 😃👍
We really enjoyed making this video, it is so different than our normal work. Please take a moment to let us know what you think. Thanks! 😀
I like seeing a mix of videos of locations we visit as well! Keep up the great work! See you all in 2 weeks!
@sempergumbie Agreed! There’s so many ways to cover the same material. See you soon, buddy! 👍😀
I worked a lot of night shifts there as a corrections RN
I would imagine that you’ve got a story or two to tell. 🙂

Sounds like the cats might have been at a different prison.

Interview interview
@@AnthonyHough-f7twe’re still interested in doing it!
My boyfriend was a prisoner there and he said that it was horrible especially when the weather was bad
It doesn’t look like it would keep out the weather very well. I don’t doubt that at all.

We were surprised to learn that a lot of people did actually escape. 👍😃
I really enjoyed your video very much . I was there a couple of days ago without a tour guy . Next time with a tour guyed .

Yikes! Some of the stories from there are rough.
I live in Bristol,TN.
Oh, that's not very far at all. Have you visited the facility before? 😀👍
SOMEONE HAD A VERY DARK SIDE OF THERE THINKING, AN UPSIDE DOWN CROSS AND AT A STATE PENITENTIARY AT THAT.
I’ve wondered about that. The only place you can look down on the building is from the hills. From there, the cross wouldn’t be upside down. Just a thought … 😃👍
