I've been on a HOI4 binge of using only the historical presets given by Paradox, alongside accurate, historical division organization. Can I do the same as the Germans in the wonderful WW1 mod Great War Redux, and defeat the Entente?

The addition of Historical presets into Hearts of Iron IV was an awesome thing for massive history nerds like myself. Now, I play REALLY historically, using only the stupid tanks and planes that happened in real life! I'm aiming to do this with EVERY country in the game (or at least every major) so let me know a good suggestion down in the comments for more countries to play!

I love The Great War :) beaten it as Entente and Germany on Max difficult, so it's kinda done for me :(

Fun Fact: German General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, The "Lion of Africa", led about 14,000 German forces in Southwest Africa. He held up over 300,000 Allied troops in Africa and is revered for never having been captured or losing a battle. He is an interesting general, and I thought of him when Aldra kept forgetting he had African holdings

To clarify: Torpedo boats are not the precursor to destroyers. Torpedo boat destroyers are.
Torpedo boats are small fast crafts armed with torpedoes that aim to toss out torpedo spreads against much larger and much, much more expensive ships.
Torpedo boat destroyers were purpose built ships intended to, believe it or not, destroy torpedo boats. To do this they had to be fast enough to keep up and have some reasonable firepower with the range to defend the big boy ships out on missions.
Because torpedo boats largely disappeared and the torpedo boat destroyers expanded their duties to fight subs, aircraft and firing torpedoes themselves the name got changed to just be destroyers.

Torpedo boats didnt dissapear! They became patrol boats. Often used as coastal defense by European powers (germany would use them in the English channel during ww2), but also as raiding ships by the US in all of Oceania.
The modern form of them is the Fast Attack Craft.
@@volatile100 yeah thats why I used a qualifier. The successors to the torpedo boat do not pose a credible threat to a fleet so they essentially also have crept towards a different role.
Im surprised you did this instead of continuing with base game major nations. I cant complain tho, a welcome surprise is something to celebrate.
Tbh, other than France and arguably China, I've done all the majors! Will still be doing some minors in base game, but I just want to try mixing it up a bit :)

My problem with the redux ww1 mod is that at the divisions have a scale of an army and have around 10k in them. Naturally, thus leads to less divisions bring Deployed. This leads to gaps in tge front and makes france run wild in rhine and Russian plan to take East Prussia and Galicia seem incredibly easy, which doesn't make you truly FEEL ww1.
I didn’t really find that was a problem for me! I just had to be constantly recruiting to ensure I have enough :P
Playing Poland is a great idea! There will be no problems that you need to deal with whatsoever!

I would love to see an ottoman one. The research Will probably be really difficult but it would be a fun one to watch
As a person who plays mod grom time to time i dont know why you hated that division change like realistically it may have been bad but gameplay wise very good move bcz now you can have more division with art in battle then normal i personally use 22 witdh divs with 2 artis
After having played it I agree! I was worried that the lack of infantry meant my org and def would be too low to hold, but the enemy ai wasn’t aggressive enough for it to be a problem :)
Maybe try the historical Presets of Austria Hungary for next time.

I wonder why Germany is portrayed as the antagonist in WWI when they were literally just defending themselves and their neighbors from Russian aggression?
Confirmed warcrimes against civilian population is occupied countries (IE : Belgium) +, first use of chemical weapons, first use of flamethrower, first use of civilian fire bombing, first use of submarines against civilian ship, some even neutral.
Most countries have a pretty valid reasons to see them as bad peoples

Because they were a monarchy. WW1 was really a war against Europe's monarchies
I don’t think y’all really understand how and why WW1 started. It wasn’t a war about imperialism or aggression or against Monarchies, but rather about alliances (and caused by bad diplomacy). Franz Ferdinand was shot, and then the Austrians waited a whole *month* to declare war. They sent an ultimatum to Serbia which had all but 1 of the demands accepted, and THEN declared war on Serbia. By that point any sympathy they would’ve had with the international community had died. Russia got involved because they were trying to be seen as the “protector of all Slavs”, Germany got involved because they gave Austria unconditional support, and they then declared war on France and invaded Belgium which saved the British a lot of lobbying and time trying to get parliament to go to war by just bringing them in anyways. The Ottomans joined because two ships they bought from the Germans (that still had German crew and officers) raided Russian ports.
Germany was seen (and is still seen) as an antagonist before and during WW1 because they literally did nothing but antagonize people.

Akshually destroyers is short for torpedo boat destroyers, because that was what they were meant to do but they also took over pretty much everything the torpedo boats did.

Your historical preset series is pretty interesting and I think I watched them all.
What I also like are historical roleplay series, like one proud bavarian does.
That would mean that you start with historical presets and develop things following your actual situation.
I mean... the historical slimmed their divisions because lack of manpower. If for one reason or another you didn't suffer those losses, why slim down your divisions?

I think the problem with that idea is that that’s just playing regular hoi4, you know? I slim divisions down because I’m low on manpower, nothing particularly interesting about that!

Cool vid! Just wanted to say that the reason you couldn’t find much info on German division composition in Africa is because Germany dedicated near nothing to their African territories, so (at least as far as I can remember) German forces in Africa were rather unorganized compared to their European forces.

I would like to see a play through a Germany where you switch to Poland once you are able to establish it and either cooperate with your German “liberators” or try and side with the entente
One thing on the Cavalry in Infantry Divisions: German peacetime Divisions included a brigade of Cavalry but gave them away except for a Squadron (aka a divisional recon company) when they mobilised to form Cavalry Divisions
The rubber production comes mainly from the small part of New Guinea we own. Shoulda protected it

Yes please, would love more WW1 videos with this format. Also, imo, while being restricted to historical designs given by missions or FTs, you should adjust the templates if they're ridicously inaccurate

Idea : You should try to play hoi how you would normally do in this mod, as Germany. (E.g. trying to get motorized, tanks, basically ww2 tactics)

torpedo boats where infact not earlyer destroyers. torpedo bots where dirt cheap capital ship killers and the reason why "torpedo boat destroyers" where invented. We later droped the "torpedo boat" part of the name and onkly keept the "destroyer" part.
Was the destroyer(slightly larger with more guns but still fast) not created to counter small, nearly unarmed except for torpedos, torpedo boats? You said that destroyer was the old name for them

It seems the biggest difference between the Great War mod and the redux version is that the original has trenches as another defensive building option like forts instead of the entrench buff, that the AI fails to build which makes pushing much easier.

To me it seems the mod devs took into acount the problem of accurate numbers of different artillery in a division and left it at just normal artillery for the beginning as you figured out

Britain in GW redux is simply stupendously strong. 70 days focus that gives 8 civs and another 8 building slots, plus eight provinces gets their infra leveled up. Britain also has a 300% booster onto researching planes, allowing it to build fighters as early as jan-feb 1914.

As far as I know, the German Africa divisions used loads of African soldiers and were more like light guerrilla fighters, always dodging the Allies.

I think the UK invaded Bulgaria by shipping troops into Russia and then walking all the way to their coastline of the Black Sea, then launched a naval invasion.

Play with ottomans they start with -40 Division attack org defense and have debts and not much stability
Germany most definitely could have won the First World War, it’s very little known but France and literally everyone on the entente were close to breaking, with the defeat of Russia it made morale sore throughout the entirety of the central powers, and as time progressed they got further and further cemented, the only factor that made the entente crawl to the finish line was the American entry which gave the entente the much needed resources, relieving the British economy, and all around boosting entente morale, which forced Germany to launch their assaults to possibly reach Paris and capitulate the entente, basically if America didn’t join the central powers would have won
Naaaah I think their lack of focus on logistics and specific, actinoable goals in the Ludendorf offensive meant that it was doomed from the start

They had limited hospital transport yes! Not a lot of medical care until a bit later in the war,
That's actually NOT the only tank Germany made, they made a super heavy tank as well towards the end of the war..wait this sounds familiar..

It's dumb. The relative growth of more factories will give you more than infrastructure. The only major exception is when playing the US because your maluses are just that bad and because it allows you to get infinite oil and trade more - which isn't an option for Germany. Build civilians, then build military, then build bases and infrastructure as you need it.

There where specific german units for Africa consisting of askari organised in fieldcompanies supported by aditional german Settler militia units and local auxiliary made up of natives but all in all only a few tausend so not really playabel in hoi4

French WW1 historicals presets would be nice since... they didn't realy had an army from 1940 to 1944
Why is "towed artillery" separate from "howitzers" ?
One is a class the other is a category?
Every howitzer is an artillery gun but not every artillery gun is a howitzer.
It doesn't make any sense.
And 77mm seems much more like a field gun caliber to me, and in fact the name FK96 implies that it indeed is a field gun (FK96 = Feldkanone 96 which literally means field cannon/field gun), which is not an artillery piece.
It might be fielded by artillery and staffed by artillery men but only for the sake of profession.
While the Krupp 120mm is an artillery piece.
Artillery is prominently used in an indirect fire role while field guns are a more direct fire / shallower firing arc support role.
Insanity.
Yeah the towed artillery is really more akin to the classification of a field gun in this mod :)

At 11:30 you pronounce schlieffen wrong, in german when you have an i and an e next to eachother its the second letter that is pronounced, so for schlieffen it is e, so it is pronounced schleefen, whereas in a word like scheisse the i is second so it is pronounced like eye, sch eye sse

I have since learned how stupid I am, and the schutTruppen were obviously the African protectorate force, and I was talking out of my ass when o say I didn’t know what type of troops were posted in Africa :P oh well!
