In my opinion the best riff of the entire Metallica discography it's the riff before the solo of Am I Savage, it's slow, groovy and heavy af and it's in standart tuning, i don't know why there's a lot of people who hate that album and specially that song
If you ask me there is one holy grail song of the 80' thrashmetal and that is Desposable Heroes from the Master of Puppets album. The intro only gives me chills every time I listen the song.
Vet! I never played that little vibrato you do in master of puppets, sounds killer! Best Metallica riff.... The post solo " die die die" riff in creeping death
The pause before the riff is just as powerful as the riff itself. Simple but well written. Years ago I had the same kind of moment with this riff just playing it over and over. But my favorite would have to be just after the 3 minute mark of leper messiah.
Cool video Mendel. Thanks for sharing your favourite Black album riff and I agree with you, Metallica has such incredible riffs in all their discography (even in the St. Anger album). My favourite song from the Black album is "The god that failed". I still remember the first time I heard that song as a teenager, going through difficult moments by that time and that song just filled me back with a lot of energy to overcome anything. I suppose Metallica has left a very important heritage in all of us who like their music.
i've stumbled into your channel in your recent muse video comparing the new and old version of citizen erased, and i'm loving your content! You're amazing! Keep it up!
Dude, the first thing I thought of was in Oblivion Pt. 2 after that solo at 2:22. I have listened to that section on repeat so many times. Another is in summoning ghosts that first main riff is probably in my opinion the heaviest rift I have ever heard. Another rift I have listened to on repeat for days. Hell that song alone I think I listened to in my car for about 3-4 weeks straight.
The black album has some brutal riffs in there that aren't too difficult to play (and I think probably some of the heaviest too), but man do they have impact!. Of all their guitar tones, the black album is my favourite too. Another of my favourite song is Of Wolf and Man.
I like the slower hypnotizing riffs from "the house Jack built" and "where the wild things are" I think these are underrated riffs even if not very metal.
I hear ya, I'm not too into ReLoad but I've always had an appreciation for Load and most the songs on that album. I feel like if that album were made by anyone besides Metallica, it would have been way better received.
I was totally headbanging before that sub title came up hahaha! Always loved that riff! That was one of the first solos I ever tried to to learn. Mainly because of the clip on Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica that shows Kirk doing that descending pentatonic run. I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen at the time. That riff afterwards is so badass though! Good call
Great video as always, Mendel!! Also, there's an unreleased/underrated song by Metallica called Just A Bullet Away. Listen to the riff that comes right after the intro buildup. It is such a catchy and groovy riff and not a lot of people know about it! 🙏
So hard to say what is the greatest Metallica Riff, because there are so many. I think even on the Load & Reload there so many Kickass Riffs! James Hetfield is such a Riff Monster!
The black album is full of great riffs. I guess, many are not spoken of because you can only pick up a few at time. So the top 5 stick, the others are left unspoken of. Holier than you, the first riff is certainly a good slap in the face, the second fits the first one so nice... Through the never at 2:52 is so heavy.... I could go on and on. Cheers.
I was thinking this the other day about Carcass riff th-cam.com/video/JJ-esJIyubw/w-d-xo.html 3.44 on here, played once and then 4.05 played twice. For me, it is simple and you could have built a song around it. One of the best riffs in metal, in my opinion.
That is an amazing song that I think gets overlooked because it's on St. Anger. I do wish that song had normal production instead of that shitty St. Anger production. It's a shame really. Still an awesome song though.
I just think the production is wacky on that album. Obviously the snare drum being the main component of my grievance. I think there are only few songs I actually like on that album. Otherwise, it's pretty much their worst. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nice choice! There's a ton of great riffs on Hardwired!
For me it's probably the "die, die, die" riff from Creeping Death.
If you ask me there is one holy grail song of the 80' thrashmetal and that is Desposable Heroes from the Master of Puppets album. The intro only gives me chills every time I listen the song.
I feel like they've got a lot of post-solo riffs that are awesome. For example that post riff on master gets me everytime!
I think the opening riff of the song Ride the Lightning is my favourite. Also pretty underrated. Gives me chills all the time
Always loved this part of struggle within, and Jame's raspy vocals on the track
All those last songs on the black album are great!
Vet! I never played that little vibrato you do in master of puppets, sounds killer!
Best Metallica riff....
The post solo " die die die" riff in creeping death
Literally used to rewind this riff and replay over and over. 100% agree!
The pause before the riff is just as powerful as the riff itself. Simple but well written. Years ago I had the same kind of moment with this riff just playing it over and over. But my favorite would have to be just after the 3 minute mark of leper messiah.

Well, I wish I knew about your TH-cam channel earlier but...I'm here now!
i've stumbled into your channel in your recent muse video comparing the new and old version of citizen erased, and i'm loving your content!
You're amazing! Keep it up!
The Shortest Straw chorus riff has an incredible effect on me - headbanging instantly!!!
Yea man! That's my fav riff from the album, will ever be! nice catch!
@Mendel, check out 5:21 on All Nightmare Long from Death Magnetic, an insane riff that is just sublime!

Glad to let you know Summoning Ghosts will be on the new album, but sounding better.
@@Mendelian super stoked to hear it!
This is a cool video. Please do more of you sharing your view of the music you listen to.
Fav Metallica riff, Creeping Death main riff.
You had me at « Metallica » 😍

My fave Metallica riff is definitely the riff right after the solo in Damage Inc.
When that riff returns at the end of the song and Lars plays a thrash beat: Epic.
The best one. Wholeheartedly agree
best riff in all metal imho, thank God for Kirk!
I like the slower hypnotizing riffs from "the house Jack built" and "where the wild things are" I think these are underrated riffs even if not very metal.

Disposable Heroes and Damage Inc. These two are my favorite bangers from Metallica !
I love the guitarsound. I feel it helps that riff alot. Also the huge drumsound
I reckon the start of Kalmah - Windlake Tale is a great example. Super simple but powerful with the rolling drums behind it.
I was totally headbanging before that sub title came up hahaha! Always loved that riff! That was one of the first solos I ever tried to to learn. Man all their riffs are awesome but I don't know why everytime I hear the chorus riff from Master Of Puppets I get stoked
BTW nice video man !!! 🤗
The B side of Black Album has got some killer tunes on it! A side isn't bad, just heard most of those songs too many times over the years.
Last 20 sec of Belphegor's "Gas Mask Terror" ... Holy shitballs
The black album is full of great riffs. I guess, many are not spoken of because you can only pick up a few at time. So the top 5 stick, the others are left unspoken of. Not Metallica, but the after solo riff in "The Betrayal" by Black Label Society kills me every time. The entire album is worth checking out anyway.
Cattle Decap -"Mammals in Babylon" the riff around the 2:21 mark
The St Anger riff does sound dope. Not gonna lie. But only that riff 😂
St Anger is a sick song idc what anyone says
also my favorite riff is the four horsemen 2:36
It’s gonna be the riff after the solo in damage inc
And here I go to Spotify to listen the black album. 😆
Bit part of Hettfield style is timing of those off-beat riffs. It's clearly years and years of plaing live muscle memory
I was thinking this the other day about Carcass riff th-cam.com/video/JJ-esJIyubw/w-d-xo.html
3.44 on here, played once and then 4.05 played twice. For me, it is simple and you could have built a song around it. One of the best riffs in metal, in my opinion.
Another one is the last riff from the shortest straw
"Good luck with downstrokes" ... for sure 😅
Holier than thou sick too off the black album.
Ja hoor !! Hoeveel jaar riep ik al niet dat dit de vetste meest metal riff vh hele album!!
Hahhahaha! Serieus?!
@@Mendelian zeker wel! ben allang blij dat ik niet de enige ben :)
Disposable heroes bruh
The Unnamed Felling is underated song but James sounds awful singing it live, but the studio version...
That is an amazing song that I think gets overlooked because it's on St. Anger. I do wish that song had normal production instead of that shitty St. Anger production. It's a shame really. Still an awesome song though.
@@majesticpbjcat7707 I like the St Anger production to be honest but I'm not saying that the songs on St Anger are good...
I just think the production is wacky on that album. Obviously the snare drum being the main component of my grievance. I think there are only few songs I actually like on that album. Otherwise, it's pretty much their worst. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
