Amy Jade Winehouse (14 September 1983 - 23 July 2011) was an English singer and songwriter. She was known for her deep, expressive contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres, including soul, rhythm and blues, reggae and jazz.
This is one of Amy Winehouse's first performances in the Netherlands. At the time she was makIng a name in her home country and not yet the star she was to become in later years. This is how the organisation positioned Amy for her 2004 performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival:
AMY WINEHOUSE:
The young Amy Winehouse from North-London is one of the new, twinkling singer/songwriter stars. She doesn’t only have a remarkable, hoarse voice, reminiscent of Lauren Hill or even Billie Holiday, she also displays a form of straightforwardness that is typical of these modern times. Let’s make one thing clear: Winehouse may be only twenty, but her subjects are a lot wiser and more explicit than those of your average One Hit Wonder in the charts. She commands a lot of different styles as we can hear on her debut CD Frank. From seventies soul and modern R&B she goes straight into jazz classics that she gives the sweltering soul ballad approach. All in all, this wayward singer with a lot of grit in her is a newcomer to cherish. And what will she sound like live?
Welcome to the official North Sea Jazz Archive! On our channel you will find live performances and interviews of Jazz Legends like Lionel Hampton, Ray Charles, Maceo Parker, Herbie Hancock and many more, who have performed at the legendary North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands

The Guy on the keyboard... Absolutely Brilliant!
Agree !!! Sensacional !!!!
Genius!
The scatting at 5:00 is so well-phrased and timed perfectly. God, she really had a mind for jazz, it's so sad she's gone.
she was so enchanting. she had that audience wrapped around her finger without even trying.
was about to comment something along the likes: "She looks finger licking good..." but you're the poet here :))
So Powerfull …..
She was absolutely COMMANDING that crowd. She was always in control and making them (and myself) feel right at home with her. They were in love with her from the jump it seems, and rightfully so.
This is an absolute treasure, bless whoever put this into the internet atmosphere.
Agree. What an awesome show 😍
Only taken 19 1/2yrs. Just think thousands of people didn't get to see this.
You mean Amy's fans who passed between 2004 and 2023?
@@memoriesmarmymind...5587 Yes - even Amy herself may not have seen it.
@AmyWinehouse9and14. wow you are so right. Did you know Amy was watching videos of herself the night before?
Anyways, I don't know why this footage was leaked after 20 years but I love it to pieces and it's Amy's best gig from Frank era.
This makes me think on how many other materials of her gigs will come to light in the next 20 yrs... I'll wait patiently 😍😍😍
@@gabrielecw03 I just want to be alive when that happens
Every single rendition during this gig was unique. Completely different sound, completely different atmosphere without the usual horn section. Stripped down and yet enormously vast. Four brilliant musicians there...
you'll be surprised re: today's upload, watch at 18.00
Four incredible musicians, including Amy. Her voice is so much more than a vehicle for articulating lyrics or singing a melody. It just fits perfectly in the jazzy mix going on here.
I think she needed to work further in this direction. This is pure expression and voice and jazz.
P😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😊😊
Love you Amy w now in 2024❤❤❤❤❤
She dreamed people would listen to her voice and forget their troubles for 5 minutes. Here I am, in trouble, listening to her over and over to get some comfort ❤️🔥
Same
Hang in there.Things will get better even though it doesnt seem like that now
same
literally
This is really sweet
One of her GREAT, GREAT, GREAT concerts. Not only her voice. The arrangements are phenomenal. She once stated that she wanted to be married, have kids and sing in small jazz venues. This may have been her vision of how she wanted her career to be.
I didn’t know that…that’s so sad
Before the hype before the beehive just purevraw talent at its best
God bless you Amy
Yes, looking homely and well nourished
Yes, she looked great with a bit of flesh on her, minus the 'big hair', trowelled on heavy eye make up, tattoos, dreadful dresses etc. She was so naturally beautiful and charming, so raw and honest, authentic, that rough working class accent etc. But, something went awfully wrong with Amy... Sad. All she needed was the true love of a man she could love. She didn't want to write love songs, but her sad life and continual failures at the love game with men forced her to.
@@joebloggs619I think we should restructure how we talk about her tragedy. She was troubled, but not bc she didn’t have a stable partner-although that’s part of it; her problems stemmed from within. Probably adopted harmful relationship dynamics from her toxic parents. And despite being beautiful and unbelievably talented, she probably didn’t think she was enough and relied on bad partners and bad habits to cope with her torment.
@@jc8198yes ❤ sounds much better, little more dignity to free will on this Earth🎉
@@joebloggs619a man couldn’t have fixed her. she needed people that actually cared about her well being instead of just money. love can’t stop addiction, unfortunately.
keyboard player is mad good! great performance from all. love you Amy xo
The keyboard playing on this insane. Been listening to this for year but never seen film
@@Benalt998 so clever right and fills in the parts of the song. I just discovered this video and think this is one of Amys best vocal performances too
@@dasblackstarr8288 I think this might be my favourite recording of amy, almost takes me back in time emotionally 🙏✌️
@billsleftfootpedal I agree I've seen a few and love this one especially 🥰 she's one of my inspirations to sing
she was SO TALENTED. we will never see another Amy Winehouse!!!
I've never heard this raw version of Amy, without the neon signs. And it is not a criticism of her "other" sound but rather this concert gives the full dimension of what she was in essence. Amy was always Amy in any context. I love the sound of this band.
Personally, I enjoy the freedom of this format more. I am very grateful to North Sea Jazz Archive for sharing such valuable and unique material.
Bedankt voor het filmpje!!!
Graag gedaan!😉
She had such sex appeal and such a talent. Amazing voice. Frank is her best album and best era
indeed and she's so funny in her interviews no filter which I love about her personality.
@@dasblackstarr8288 Amy would get cancelled like a mf, today. I hate the thought
Thank you for this wonderful gift. I will be listening to this over and over again. The real Amy, not some cheap imitation.
In awe. Wish I could have experienced this live.
I found a recording of this set at a record store 5 years ago, and today i finally got to see the performance. i’m so happy 😭
It's a treasure
was it a bootleg? i'd love to find a copy
AMY WAS BORN..when I was graduating from the 6th grade in Compton California, the year we found my brother shot dead in the middle of the street.. When I heard AMY the first time, I froze, sat down, and felt her soul touch mine. I was doing double life upstate, searching for a station that might play her with a crank radio in the hole.. I got out the hole, got a t.v, and was lucky enough to hear her at an award show scraming,.."FOR THE QUEEN!" Amy was getting an award. SHE seemed to have felt all my life's tragic, injurous moments, my mother being shot dead when I was 8 months old, the unfair heartbreak after giving my all to livers who promised we'd never part, listening to AMY'S heavenly sweet voice....and it counseled and comforted me. I layed in my cell absolutely destroyed when I heard of her death, screaming ,"Amy why did you leave me!" You are the only one who overstood. AMY IS ETERRNAL, AND ETERNALLY LOVED.
I can feel You., and so She could have made our converation ever happend ...
She is genius.
Finally after all these years ❤❤❤
Yeah, and finally, including f me pumps
My favorite Amy show! Thank you for this gift!❤
I'm glad to spend Valentine's Day with Amy ♥️♥️♥️
I’ve been listening to crappy audio-only recordings of this concert for ten years. This is great
Incredible soul, Miss you Amy
Caught a couple of songs from this set and it left a big impression…..wonderful to see that this was not only recorded but now released in full on TH-cam….thank you NSJ 🙏
Here for the first time. i`m so fckn crying
If Nina Simone & Jeff Buckley had a love child, it would have been Amy Winehouse. She was truly something special.
19:56 Mr Magic
This version is amazing
Finésse !
See you through the smo.o.o.OOO...ke hits different. its is definitely the best version
I love you Amy 🩷 so talented miss you 🌺🌺
She is unreal, true angel, the sweetest thing. I adore her. And my heart breaks into pieces every time I hear her mesmerising voice.😭❤️
❤
true talent
I will always love you Amy. You were so beautiful.
At her best ❤
Just discovered this gem. Now, I can't stop watching it! RIP, Amy, you are sorely missed. ❤❤❤
Fantastic! She was at the height of her powers in this era. I am glad this show was preserved, and that we are able to watch and hear it here. Thank you.
Amy is unbelievably magnificent in this live 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
And Sam Beste deserves a very special recognition 👌
From Barcelona 🌅🚡⛴️ with ❤️
✔️AMY FOREVER✔️
I first saw her at shepherds bush and then Brixton the same year during Frank days, and I just remember the feeling of knowing I witnessed something exceptional that would stay with me for life
Счастливчик!!!😊
I just love the very laid back setting of the entire show. The small venue made it all more intimate and I have the feeling that's where Amy felt the most comfortable. Without the hype, without the big media coverage, just Amy showcasing her pure talent and artistry.
Thank you for sharing this. I like to remember her like this ❤
Oh my god... what a waste.
Maybe the angels wanted her to sing in heaven. I still can't get over her passing. The last true jazz contemporary artist alive that I can remember.
PS. Amy was 20 here and the key player 17! ( the drummer and bass player look pretty young too) Imagine achieving such an honored accomplishment in such a short period of time!
Outstanding gig. Thank you very very much @northsea
watch today Friday 😉
Existen grandes e increibles artistas de jazz hoy en dia pero no son tan unicos , originales y grandiosos como amy winehouse
I don't know if this comment will go through, but please check out RAYE from the UK. Her performance of "Escapism" on SNL was perfect except for the censorship. She has BBC session's as well. She is alive and needs support, just listen to her song "Ice Cream Man" if you want to know of her past...This is awesome and beautiful & we have it for life now, but don't close your mind off to other people, please♥
Never a waste, but a gift. If she didn't go through what she did, her music wouldn't have been so legendary. Amy as Phyllis Hyman, Prince, Micheal Jackson, and other legendary vocalist were a sacrifice for OUR enjoyment for ETERNITY exceeding their existence.
For as long as we can hear, and have sound. Thank you, Amy, for selflessly blessing us with your tragedies.
Here are some jazz songs I wrote th-cam.com/play/OLAK5uy_kp2m_1h0wIENMLlTy2Uf7g2qUIodqvGtY.html - :))
That TONE !!!!!!! Unbelievable 😩❤️❤️❤️👑👑💯🙏🏽
She is so much alive ! Quite unlike in her post 2007 concerts - still a great voice but a numb, robotic presence most of the time. I very much prefer the way she was in 2004 : free, happy, a healthy figure. Alive, yes ...
Show business sucks, sometimes, squeezing a fragile and beautiful soul for profit ... She did fine in pop, indeed (with such talent, she would have done fine in any genre), yet jazz was her real thing and it shows ...
Amy before Hollywood ❤
She was a really !! good singer !!
A young talented Jazz singer too...!!
Miss her so much!!

Thank you soooo much for posting this concert. Pure BRILLIANCE all the way around. Amy, of course and outstanding musicians 🎶🎤🔥❤️

I've had such a good night. An hour of me, Amy and her enchantingly talented band.
Amy you are forever apart of me, of my heart and really, really apart of my soul. I have always loved you, but now, as a 30 yr old gay man (pushin' 30), I have revisited parts of my memory of you I had locked away, but now, I really see you with wiser eyes, your lyrics admit your flaws, at times your evil, selfishness and ego. But that's what makes us human, and it is so bloody beautiful to hear you admit and lay bear all of your honesty, fear, hurt, issues and above all - talent.
You will never read this message nor know me, but I will always know you, for as long as I live during this short time we have. You, Amy have left a very meaningful mark on me, beautiful girl.
I feel this entire comment in my soul🖤
You don’t know for how long i was waiting for this 😊❤
Quelle explosion! Quel potentiel de génie musical ! Quelle personnalité ! Quelle beauté, QUELLE BEAUTÉ MUSICALE ! .......
This is hands down the best concert of Amy Winehouse. So happy I was able to find a video of it.
2004 Amy Winehouse is my favorite version of Amy
I love the way she tells the boys “go on baby” 💔🫦
Amazing that Amy had to wear a wristband. I came to Amy late. My loss and a deep regret.
literally been waiting for this hq recording since i was 14... i'm 29 now lmao
Amy, siempre Amy, Gracias!!!
Thank you for posting the full show unbroken.
Amy was a one of a kind talent. For me, something between Nina Simone and Patty Smith. Plus she did it with mostly originals!
brotherrrrrrrr 💕

The mark of a good artist, apart from basic talent is originality, innovation and, above all , AUTGENTICITY, no fakery or imiation of others. Even if they cover a song, they do it in a unique, new way. She not only was original. She also updated and innovated the traditional jazz music genre. She dared to go where most young people dare not go. Jazz, because it requires real musical skill to do this genre that doesn't rely on making a whole lot of noise to get its creative message out. Unlike rock, hip hop, metal etc or the simple 'wear your heart on your sleeve' country style or high brow classical culture stuff. Not that there's anything wrong with these other good styles. She took this more traditional jazz genre and remodelled it, made it not so clean and conventional, respectable. Which jazz never was, when it first started. It was anything but clean and respectable. It was about poor folk, negroes, lovers doing the dirty on partners, crooks etc. Think St Louis Blues, Minnie The Moocher, Stormy Weather, Blues In The Night and similar jazz standards. But this style gained popularity and was made clean, respectable sanitised, made more acceptable so it could sell better to affluent middle class audiences wanting so mething a little more 'risque' than listening to some syphony orchestra or opera, ballet etc doing high brow culture vilture stuff, which is fine, but sometimes one craves someting a little more 'basic', like drugs, sex and rock'n'roll. Before rock, there was jazz that grew out of the earlier blues music fulfilling this role. And, if you listen closely to quality rock music, even some hard 'art rock', like Cream, you can pick up the strong blues and jazz influences, as well as the African roots rhythmic patterns, as much of jazz and blues hand also early hip hophad its earliest roots in black African style music. It's pretty raw and primeval and that is why the driving rhythm gets you, if you're tuned into the rhytms of life, nature, work, the city, the workd around you, as all good srtists are.
An enormous talent … what a voice & the fragility of “27 Club”
perfect!
What a spectacle of women 🤌☺️
Finally her entire performance on video! ❤ I only knew the audio version of it. I particularly love this version of What Is It About Men. Stripped down, laid back, dreamy and yet melancholic... The whole vibe is amazing. 💕 Amy was in her prime of life here. Fresh, witty, funny, attractive, raw... Just pure talent and one of a kind. I fell in love with her music in 2007 when her album Back To Black blew up internationally and in 2008 I bought both deluxe versions of Back To Black and Frank. R.I.P. little songbird 🐦🕯 🌹 I miss you so much! 💔
She was truly one of a kind, super talented and unique. If only she could see all the love we all still have for her. Wishing she was still here. She was & is such a beautiful soul 🦋💫
Amys nod to Sarah Vaughn “ lullaby of birdland”. My site has the chords. Bless your heart AW. ❤

First time in my life that I'm going to listen and see Amy through this video. My ears and heart only admit soul, r&b and blues, but I never listened to her from my own decision. The first few minutes were enough to open the door for her. Amy welcome to my journey, I wish you music for the rest of my life. ❤️
What a great Valentine’s Day gift!😂😁
Till this day i still thing that she could sing 100x better than anything that we can find online and on records if she wanted to. Amy was a force of nature a mix of Billie and Ella of her genaration.
Ive been listening to this for years,, never seen footage. Insane fender rhodes player 🙏🙏🙏
I don't have words. I forget about myself when I listen to this
She has incredible control over her voice!
I think She looked quite sad in her Last performances. Music is of course fantastic. Look the cesture With left hand. Love You Amy. M

I got stuck at first with the attention paid to her relationship w/dude, and addiction etc. I've since been exploring Amy the artist. What a great gift she's giving us with this so fabulous concert. Thank you North Sea Jazz Archive. I wish my father was alive to enjoy this, for here was a man with a 3,000 lb, lovingly curated over his life collection of lo's. Thank you for sharing this with us.
