  • Singapore closed off several popular coastal parks as an oil spill continued to spread along its shores, with authorities vowing to intensify cleanup efforts on Sunday. The oil spilled into Singaporean waters after a Netherlands-flagged dredger struck a stationary Singapore-flagged bunker vessel on Friday afternoon in the southern port of Pasir Panjang.
Authorities had said the vessel was no longer leaking oil, but added in a statement late on Saturday that "due to the tidal current, the treated oil has landed along shorelines including Sentosa, Labrador Nature Reserve, Southern Islands, Marina South Pier and East Coast Park." Despite the closures, some beach goers still visited on Sunday morning.
“It’s insidious because it gets into the nooks and crannies of stuff that it makes it really hard to clean up,” said Singapore-based Andrew Dixon, who runs several eco-tourism resorts on nearby Indonesian islands. “Nature is good at breaking it down - unfortunately or fortunately.”
Singapore is a global shipping and fuel bunkering hub. The environmental impact of the oil spill remains unclear, but local newspaper The Straits Times reported that fishermen were on alert for a spike in the number of fish deaths over the next few days.

The crux of the criminal probe on whether the allusion was due to just the moving Netherlands dredger losing all controls only, crashing into the stationary Singapore bunkering vessel, causing the 400 tons of crude oil leak into the ocean or more likely there's 'more than meets the eye' as in the captain and first officer of both ships are at fault, with the stationary SG bunkering vessel berthed at the wrong terminal or not clearing the way off for the Netherlands dredger to traverse its course fully taking safe distances between shipping lanes into account. Also, questionable practices by the Singapore Police Coast Guard for not intervening beforehand to maintain the safe chartering distances between shipping vessels whether stationary or not should be brought up in the criminal court proceedings.

Previously, there was a serious oil spill in the Indian Ocean on the tourist island of Mauritius, a highly-protected atoll region with beautiful turquoise waters and precious coral reefs all around, just like the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia.
When the crude oil spilled into the waters, pollution was so bad there were large swathes of black oil slick patches everywhere, destroying the ecosystem, and turning the waters dark grey and murky. About 1,000 tonnes of fuel oil from the Japanese-owned MV Wakashio leaked into the ocean in July 2020, causing Mauritius' worst ecological disaster.
The captain and first officer of that ship that ran aground on a coral reef in Mauritius had each been sentenced to 20 months in prison. The magistrate said she hoped that the sentence would "serve as a lesson" for the men, and other potential offenders as an act of deterrence in the future.

One of the Worlds busiest ports. If it takes months for a spill, what if more spills? Coastal Defence? East coast plan? I hope there not be a time where sg is fully encircled in oil slick for whole year

    this is small potatoes
In Singapore, potential pollutants include construction runoff, trash and chemicals. Construction projects in the vicinity can increase the possibility of toxic pollutants being released into the water. Poor trash disposal by park visitors, especially to unprotected areas, will also negatively affect the water quality.
