    Just got the game during Summer Steam Sale. Haven't played yet, but looking forward to it. I've been playing subsims since "Gato" on MSDOS. Totally hooked on the SH franchise, especially SH4. Your video are the best tutorials. No extraneous yammering, and step-by-step explanations.

    I just purchased this game today after having trouble playing Silent Hunter 3, I’ve been looking for a submarine game for years but never knew these games were out there all this time (not really a PC gamer).
    I’m already having a blast with this game it’s so cool, just need to get used to assigning crew members what to do etc…..especially the torpedo fighting, glad I found your vid……subscribed.

    First, massive thank you for all of the tutorials. I was completely lost in the sauce for a while and your videos got me out in the deeps and having fun. A week in to the game now, I am having a blast! You rock. Now to my question, I am having a miserable time on a mission where I need to sink the "Empire Whatever" who is one of about 25 boats in a convoy. That convoy is heavily surrounded by corvettes and battleships. I try to get close, sneak style, but by the time I even identify one boat my discipline runs out or I get spotted. How do I sneak in to such a big circle of ships, identify the correct ship, kill it, and still get out alive?? I'm sorry if this is in one of your videos from a few months ago and have already explained. Big fan of your work, and thanks again.

      Thanks very much! Get out ahead of the convoy, drop to at least 30m . Kill everything that makes noise. When you get into the baffles of the lead escorts roll up to just shy of PD, say 10m and take a peek with the scope. Rinse and repeat. There's no fighting discipline, you just have to react fast when it goes down. Kill your target, get low and slow and get gone. If you have to disengage and pick up the convoy again, do so. Happy hunting.

    For speed what I do is put a point on front of the ship, give it 15 seconds, another point, measure the distance, divide that by 15, then multiply that by 3.6. This only works when you are in metric mode. I like this method bc it’s extremely fast and relatively simple.

    So my mistake was not closing the torpedo tubes while changing targets... I was getting a headache from this! I learned a lot about how to measure and get the angles manually though, but doing it all from the attack periscope I always hit a target then miss the second (because I didn't close the torpedo page...). That will help for sure though! Great video, thank you!

    Excellent guide. You gave me options I didn't even realise I had. The only bit I didn't understand is how you calculated course from the periscope tools. It just seemed arbitrary to me.

      During the build that this video was filmed in, it was fairly arbitrary. Where we a re build 131 now, I would suggest using map tools, or using AoB from the video here: th-cam.com/video/kqVO-ESAm8s/w-d-xo.html

    Did you learn all this in the Royal Navy? Or did you have to figure all this out yourself? I've been a professional land surveyor for 12 years now. Before this I was in the Military and I never really understood maps. contours and all that. I had a good idea and could navigate ok, but I always felt like I was "hoping I knew what I was looking at". Now I have a decade of making maps professionally and can read them like clock work. I don't even need a Legend, ha. Life seems to throw things at you you don't have skills or experience in, when you need it the most. Then you wish you had all that you have now, back when you needed it. Its almost useless now, unless you pass it on. And you sure do Sir. Thank you.

      I have done some research on uboats since I bought this game and I come to find out the movie called Das Boot was made in regards to U96. The ingame names are the same as the real life sailors that were commissioned to the sub. The logo on the conning tower is even the real deal..
      How cool is that!

    Are the in-game tool giving bad information ? Or are they rounded too like map based information that you manually entered. Because if the game calculated 6 knot from periscope and 5.6 knot from map, it's a big difference.

      The game tutorial doesn't really tackle the information needed for manual play. The periscope will never show decimels, it rounds to the nearest knot. You only need decimals when entering manually

    Does distance need to be recalculated regularly, say for instance I'm working up the solutions on multiple ships - by the time I finish the third ship is the fact that the first one has continued transit made my distance out of date or is it compensated for automatically?

      It's not done automatically. Best practice is take your distance reading while flooding the tubes, fire as soon after you take the bearing as you can.

    Great Tutorial video, thanks for your hard work. But, still, can you teach us how to launch a torpedo from a long distance, such as 2~4 nautical miles away with manual aiming. I only have a 20% chance to hit the target. And this skill is really important, especially when encountering a big convoy, and 2 nautical miles is the minimum distance I can reach, otherwise, I will be spotted by the escort destroyer or cruiser.

      Using these methods will easily work at that 2nm. Do NOT try to fire at 4nm, none of the torpedoes have the range to make it to target

    really helpfull. My last hunt was a shame. 10 torpidos in the wind and no idea why it didn't work. Now, at least, I have some ideas for the next time. I just don't understand why we don't need to make the uboat face the target

    When doing the angle on bow, you can see on the map that the ship is angled away from you, but on the statimeter tool, you have to set it ever so slightly towards yourself to be able to enter the 115 degrees. Is that supposed to happen?

      AOB sort of works from the perspective of your target ship vice yours.

    9:31 why are the angles you get from the angle on bow method and the map method different?

      Typing numbers results in true course, as in via compass rose. Angle on bow is angle relative to your boat.

      @@Lite_lySalted I guess my confusion stems from the input, since you plug 115° into the angle on bow tool, which then registers as a true course of 98.9°, but when you calculate using the map you get -145°, which then translates to 215°, which is nowhere near 98.9°. Is it just different because you're now viewing it on the map instead of in the periscope? Thank you

      @@heavyharris5580 ah, I see what you're getting at. The course tool does not register as true course unless you physically type the number in. When you dial the arrow, the value gets represented by some equation that the game does in the background. Maybe some representation of relative bearing. I honestly couldn't say. The math doesn't check out. I'd recommend using the true course method, or get the TDC mod if realism is what you're after.

    Great series this are :) i learned to play Uboat watching youre video's thank you!! I have a issue with torpedoes, last night i fully hit a destroyer in its side, and it has only 5% damage?????? Even with all my torpedoes i would not able to sink it! In silent hunter you only need 1 torpedo

      Thanks! I'd recommend no less than 2 for destroyers. The damage box can be misleading, but sometimes depending on where you hit, it can take several shots.

      Yes, you can move. It won't do anything to your shot unless you are using manual angle on bow calculations

      @@deruttnaavokadosarna3968 I get that, I was just pointing out that the Maths in this game are easy since the game gives you every answers. I don't do much Maths either, I mean I have to for work but it's just calculating feet, inches and their decimals, nothing too fancy.

      Late for the party but here I go anyway after reading the other response:
      It makes you interested in math because it is easy to understand with examples AND a (probable) hobby of yours, gaming.
      Learning while doing something enjoyable is completely different than cramming a textbook, it's the same for languages, history and anything else, the other user says "the game is easy because it makes all the calculations for you"...it's extremely wrong...I've studied nautical sciences and I can say, the manual methods shown in this video is what we use to make calculations, of course, most of the data is already shown to us through modern equipment such as through ECDIS but, when needed, we do use Radar and onboard equipment to make those same calculations, the only difference is that it's not in this "eagle view" way.

      @@baluranha From memory, my point was you just draw a line between two dots, get an exact number which is easier than real life calculation are. Getting the angle of the ship would be harder and so would be getting its speed.
      It probably wouldn't be off by much, but the game does give you exact answers easily, making Maths easier. I've never been on a ship other than fishing boats or docked commercial transport ships, so I can't say I'm an expert on the subject, it's just my observation and logic from what is given to us in the game.
      I'll take your word for it, that it easier than it seems for someone with no experience on the subject at hand.

      @@Lite_lySalted I did that, but when I shot the torpedoes at the ship they went wide left…….this has happened 2 or 3 times but I’m sure the angle of bow was off if I’m missing that wide….lol
      Also I just saw at the top of the AOB box that you can switch from angle to course, didn’t know you can switch between the 2.

    For The T1 torpedo. Why would you want to choose the low speed setting? Does it have an advantage compared to the high speed setting or vice versa?

    Hi great tutorial you explained everything great and very calm. It really helped me alot. But my periscope looks different then yours, the actual lense you see through is very small in my game, which makes it hard to do the measurments. Is there a button I have to press to get it to fullscreen?

    I'm so confused, no matter how close I get to enemy ships the status never goes beyond the greyed out flag and the aim percentage never increases despite having one man on the aiming periscope and another on the other periscope. I got close enough to use the deck gun and it still never gave me an option to engage.

    Thank you for this series, it's been a massive help in grasping this game. A question though, when would I want to change the speed of my torpedoes? And last wouldn't the angle of bow change in relation to you as the torpedoes went to your target? If so why wouldn't you just always use true direction? Sorry for the heavy questions. I'm really new to this style of game.

      Happy to help! A faster torp is harder for a warship to avoid, or can come in handy with a ship that is rapidly changing speed. Once the torp is fired, AoB is programmed into it to move to X space, so continual changes don't affect it so long as the target stays on course/speed. True course is more accurate; up to the player to decide how to calculate. Happy hunting!

      You have hard core aiming turned on. You can't auto calculate with that enabled.

    I understand 3 minutes 15 is very convenient but as an occasional streamer of this game, sitting still for 195 seconds without much to talk about feels like an age. The periscope method is obviously great for stream entertainment but I'm often finding it difficult to approach a the perfect angle.
    What I have been doing instead is stopping the stopwatch after 30 seconds, looking at my 2nd monitor and calculating metres per second and then dropping that figure into a mps to knots calculator.
    That seems to be working... but can anyone suggest something thats just as fast if not faster?

    In your examples, I see you are always at the beam of target, to measure its speed with chronometer and distance with telemeter. You do not say that you must set a course to see target in that position. If ship is not seen in its length, how can mechanical calculator evaluate its characteristics? (assuming ship has been recognized)
    Playing not in realistic way (3rd choice) we are too far from reality, it is a game. I have to investigate the way WWII u-boot commander really effected torpedo calculations. Anyway i started with U-boot only since few days and if I resist its difficulty, i will do a more correct consideration later.

    I don't seem to have the option to warm torpedoes...
    Might be a dumb question, but with the automatic firing solutions, does all the math still need to be done to hit, or does the "launch at this target" button in the target card suffice?

      On auto you don't need to calculate anything, just wait til your solution is up nice and high and fire

      Also note that a 100%solution on an alarmed ship will most likely miss, as alarmed ships change course and speed.

    man, that course tool is so imprecise. I wonder if I'm doing anything wrong. when I fire with that estimation I always miss, torpedo passes behind the ship. do you have any tips? even on this video it's possible to see how far is the estimation compared to the number you got on the map.

    How come every time I go to an area where I get a message to go investigate and when I get there the ship or enemy uboat is no where to found, all the while expending fuel doing patrols etc…..just a little frustrating is all.

    i just got the game but i cant seem to hit much. To find the speed do i need to be directly to the side of the ship? The course also confuses me. when you do it with the protractor its 115 and gets put to 98 something but when you do true course its 215. that seems like a big difference to me so im not sure how that works. cool video would love a response because im struggling to hit anything.

      No, you don't have to be to the side. 115 was the course relative to your boat. 215 was its true heading based on north being 0/360 degrees.

      @@Lite_lySalted okay thank you. also i figured out how im gonna play. when you set crew to find torpedo calculations when you do one manually it adds to theirs so all i have to do is find speed and distance and then by that time they find course and its faster that way. but thanks for the help. love your videos im trying to find as much info on this game as possible. could you possibly make a mods video at somepoint to show some good mods because i have one that i like but im sure there are more thank you.

      You show 2 ways to find the course of the ship, by either using the tool or typing in the course directly.
      However in both scenarios you end up with two different results for the true course, which left me confused.
      I noticed when trying to replicate what I learned here.

      @@Newwgo yes, by going purely visually, there is a large error percentage, as your trying to point the arrow roughly in the direction the ship looks like its going in. If you do it this way, keep dispersion of salvos high, to maximize your chance of hitting. Much more accurate to go by AOB from the map.

      Also, true course and AOB via the tool are very different. One is based with 0 degrees being north, and the other is based off 0 degrees being the nose of your ship
