I have 3 of those, and they are loaded! Achieved 9ft by year two. I pick the fruits, and then immediately cut the branches back by a third. Grows back quickly and loads of berries all over again, and just keep doing it throughout the year. Pick and prune
I’m in Glendale AZ and growing the Pakistan variety. I bought my mature cuttings from Etsy and the seller included a couple bonus osbourne fig cuttings and everything rooted from 7 inch sticks. I’m looking forward to the shade and large berries it will provide.
She’s loaded for bear my friend!!! Nothing like a good fresh mulberry. Mine don’t make it inside the house because we eat them all straight from the tree 😂. Mine is a dwarf variety as well (Issai) I believe if I spelled it correctly. Delicious fruits that are on the sweeter side and medium sized. Thanks as always for sharing and stay blessed fam! -Calvin
Fantastic progress! How do you avoid caliche? I’m in Las Vegas and I’m running into all kinds of heavy clay and rock. Would this mulberry work in that poor of soil?
It all depends on how deep that caliche layer is. Typically trees only need about 3 ft deep to provide a good sturdy root system. If you want a 30 ft tall mulberry tree it might need to go a little bit deeper.
Typically when we are planting new fruit trees, we do a percolation test. We dig the hole exactly where we want the tree, and then we completely fill it up with water, it should be MOSTLY empty after a couple of hours. No more than 24hrs at max. We already know how our soil is on our property and have a good basis of our drainage, which luckily is good for us. 🙏

Glendale is my hometown, born and raised! I don't know any neighborhood in Glendale that doesn't have a mulberry tree growing somewhere lol
I hear good things about Etsy. We are considering selling our rooted trees locally here in Arizona in the fall depending on how things go this summer.

So true! We are going to TRY not eating them. We really want to make wine with these berries this year.

Dont forget after its done with the fruit you can cut it back and make it fruit another heavy crop.

If you are only growing a mulberry tree for food to reach easily then the root system will not need to be that elaborate.
Rock is horrible to dig around. I used to live near a river bottom, had cobblestone everywhere! I was never able to use an actual shovel, just a pic!
