This is a shinging example of what someone with a huge amount of drive, intelligence and passion is capable of doing. Jonas, this is definately one of your stand out videos, the effort involved is only matched by the sheer brilliance of your explanation. Same here. Going from knowing nothing and starting with Unity3D and not knowing a single thing about C# and dealing with all the issues with caps and syntax was stressful enough, then I had to invent a way to get graphics to display how I wanted which I don't like because i had to use a weird perspective and stretch the image to look normal, so animating an entire game that way would be a nightmare.
      So after all that frustrating and basically getting enemy movement, attack, lifebars and all that, I discovered a simpler engine and switched to it, but now I am having to learn everything all over again, but I won't have to worry about using that perspective/stretching because it can display it how i want, by default (2.5D). The issue now is, it's still an uphill battle because everything is once again new to me and being stuck on EVERY single step of the way, just like Unity3D. The whole experience has made me hate trying to learn game development.
      I still love the idea of programming games, but I am way past burnt out on getting stuck on every single step because I don't know how to do things. I really don't want to give up and the longer I wait, the less marketable my ultimate game project will become, but I feel like I need to take off several years of not even looking at game development. However, it's also difficult, because the ONLY thing stopping me, is getting stopped by not knowing how to do everything.
      Imagine sending a 2 year old to NASA and telling that child to take over everyone's job, even the most technical ones. That's what I feel like, I know almost nothing (still). I keep thinking "I know how to do that" and when I try it, I realize I don't have a clue and can't even explain it in words to ask for help a lot of the time.
      Another thing, is that my "ultimate game project" would likely benefit from getting someone to help work on it, but then i would have to share the profit and I am already planning on giving 50% of the net-profit to the IP holder for letting me use their popularity to insure I get sales, and Steam takes 30% +publish fee, so that makes it 35% profit to me, 35% to IP and 30% to Steam + publish fee. If I split my 35%, then that's 17.5% of the list price, plus I'm sure i'll have to pay taxes on the income, so that's even more fees.
      If a game is $10, and i get 35%, that is only $3.50 or if i split that, I only get $1.75 per sale!
      $10 is just an idea price that is easy with math. The actual price will be determined by how much the game is worth ($5 to $30 is what I'm assuming).
      I don't want to talk about the details of my game, because I invested a lot of money in software and such and would be devastated if someone else made the game before I could finish it, so don't bother asking. Any clues would be an instant giveaway.

    • @JonasTyroller
      @JonasTyroller  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@FusionDeveloper I think a lot of beginners do it the wrong way around. They have an idea and try to learn everything they need to execute it. It would be way smarter to learn a couple of easy things and then come up with an idea you can actually execute with that.
      Make an idea that fits your skills. Don't try to make your skills fit an idea.
      If you ever give it another shot, that's the way I would go. It's way less frustrating and way more fun! There are absolutely awesome games you can make with just a couple of lines of code.
      Seems like you're already highly invested in your idea, though, so do whatever feels best for you. I wish you the best of luck with your project!!!

      @@JonasTyroller That's perfect. I've never thought about that before. I've been struggling to figure out a strategy, now I finally have one, thanks to you. I will make a list of everything I know how to do, and use them like puzzle pieces to assemble a game. My issue is constantly getting stuck with every step , no momentum. This should solve that problem.
      It's basically what I wanted to do, except I planned to use it only to help, rather than as my only code. Of course I'll still try to find answers for how to do new things, but if it doesn't work, I won't keep trying, I'll just omit it and move on.

    It's so weird that for my game, it took me multiple weeks to code the cutscenes but the actual level design and enemies and everything took like half that time including polishing so that's weird. I noticed that I could finish the game in less than 2 years if I worked full time on it but in the current state it'll be around 5 years. It hardly depends on me because I have to do a lot of stuff for school and my summer holidays were basically completely occupied by driving school. I just hope that all the menus and interfaces won't take that much time, but if Toby Fox is willing to invest 3 years working full time just for a demo, 5 years of hobby game development should be alright

    This is scary but very important. The sad thing is that this video was here for some time now. And I didn't even know this channel existed or this video was here to help me. I honestly needed this. My first game that I was planning to be a big project took longer than expected. There was spaghetti code, and I was very used to collaborating in teams on a site I used to make my games on called Scratch. I obviously let it go, but I'm still working on some projects.
    I did my first game jam solo recently and if I knew this I probably definitely would have lowered my scope. I didn't even get everything done that I wanted to for the game jam. This is probably the reason why xD. Regardless I'm a creative person and I have too many ideas, but this video made me realize I need to focus on the scope of the games I'm working on or planning to work on later this year or in the future.
    It would make sense for me to finish up the game I made for a game jam because the theme is defined and the majority of the game is already done. Maybe I should do that project to test myself and see what I can achieve from that timeframe as a solo dev and compare it to the timeframe of my projects I want to start later. Thank you, You saved me time in the future. This one will definitely stay in my long term memory XD

    One thing I find myself doing a lot is distracting myself with making tools or helper scripts (Unity's addressables, custom inspectors, etc) that help make the process easier, and it does improve my knowledge, though it is not directly contributing to making a game. But, I do pride myself that I may be able to make a neat library of knowledge and tools to back me for a game project.

    My solution against burning out is using gzdoom, an engine I know since my childhood. Not the best choice for everyone, but it fills in boring parts of reinventing the wheel, when it comes to fps games.
    It already has menu, multiplayer, weapon system and the best map editor in the world (that I sometimes use to export a map into Unity)
    I set a short, very short amount of time to work on my game. Around 4 months. If I would work on it longer, I would burn out. With this engine I am able to do this since it is a game that is already fun, that I mod basically (but license lets me sell). I know I can make something enjoyable in few days even in case of emergency, with the intuitive map editor.
    Of course that is not my aim, but I just know that this is the only way for me.

    Great video! Editing was on point with all the visualizations for the concepts and concerns. Content most importantly was great too. There are a lot more considerations in the video than many people would probably think about. The 20% addition might vary from person to person and project to project. Sometimes you need more, sometimes less. 20% seems a bit too low for me personally though. Since you already have the core mechanics in place, it might work out to steadily decrease the necessary time investment you need per level made. Most of it will probably revolve around level design now. Like you said, the deeper you are in the project, the more accurate estimations you can give, this is why I cannot really estimate some gameplay systems I've never done before, or let's say I often miss the mark.
    I haven't used estimations often for private projects yet, but I totally should :)

      The thing is. It was done... about 1 year ago. But Jonas keeps adding stuff to it. You can easily make this game forever if you keep on adding stuff. So those calculations weren't bad at all 😅

    Great video! When it comes to picking a project to commit to, how does one make this decision? Especially when it may take 2+ years and/or might be the only shot you get?

    • @JonasTyroller
      @JonasTyroller  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm. Hard to tell. Usually I'd recommend making at least 10 different prototypes and then committing to the best one, but for some reason I never follow that advice myself...
      I think this project has potential and you can also do a soft commit, which is what I'm planning. I'll make a way smaller game first and only keep going if the result is promising.
      There is no reason for taking the full 2 year risk. You need to keep the option to reevaluate as you go (but without falling victim to shiny object syndrome).
      Thanks for your comment. :)

    Wouldn't it stand to reason that if we made 100% of the game at a very minimal polish, we would not suffer as much from increasing scope or a borken fundamental? Everything makes sense to me but that one part. If we do 100% of polish for each segment and than it turnes out that one of the segments needs reworking, we just lost god knows how many hours polishing that segment. But if everything works fine and we are happy with the game with all the janky physics and placeholder assets, wouldn't polishing be just that, polishing? No need to rework logic, or change elements. The game works, now lets make it be nice and smooth and good looking.

    • @JonasTyroller
      @JonasTyroller  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I agree to your point. I guess you should start out with prototyping. Make sure you absolutely know you need a feature before you polish it. Making 100% of the game and polishing it later can come to bite you in the back as well, though. If you underestimate the time it takes, you can still suffer from overscoping and a lower quality result.
      I recommend prototyping first to figure out what your game needs, then making a vertical slice to get a feeling for how long it takes to reach 100% polish, but projects are different and the best solution for your game probably really depends on what you are making and how you'd like to work on it.
      I can't quite remember what I said in the video. Hope I didn't say you have to build the entire game as vertical slices, cause you are right, that sounds a bit dumb. Making one vertical slice of a small part of your game is enough and quite helpful for getting a better understanding of what you are creating, how it will feel when it's done and how much effort it'll take to get there, though.
      Hope that makes sense. :)

    It seems you got some knowledge about game creating , I follow since july 2019 the development of the game Paralives . The team are at the moment only 3 people and 1 assistant for marketing and communication with the fans . This indie developers promisse to make a life simulation game that should be better than all the Sims games .
    I think the game Paralives will be release arround 2025 maybe even much later , ..... I ask you as person who got knowledge in game creating , how long do you think would it take to make from scratch a brandnew life simulation game that is better than the Sims 3 and Sims 4 ?
