Switching beats/ genres seamlessly is normal in SM Ent. This agency is known to mix multiple genres in 1 song, esp with EXO's discography. Through this, they are proving that they are a vocal powerhouse agency and their artists can pull off any music genres.

i noticed when it comes to these hairstyles in exo, it's aways kai. the cornrows, the bedazzled durag in mmmh and the dreads. not too long ago, this guy on a korean dating show (who was on the tan side) got blasted for using a dark skin black emoji on his ig and apparently many others have done the same thing. many people discussed that colorism in this culture is so deep that they make slightly tan idols feel like they're really dark (or dark enough to use the dark skin emoji) when in realiity, they're only slightly tanner. kai is the slightly tanner one of the group compared to the other members which is why i think it's always kai, they think "oh he's darker, let him wear these hairstyles." if it happened to more than one member i wouldn't say this, but the fact that it's ALWAYS kai and literally no one else in the group? the colorism definitely has something to do with it.

For anyone wondering, the reason black people find non-black people with braids and dreads disrespectful is a multi-layered one. Typically black hair is seen as unkempt and unprofessional. In other words, black hair has been put in a very negative light, especially in the professional setting, AKA Ghetto and or dirty. It is why a lot of black people (I'm talking as a black woman) wear wigs and straighten their hair. To be taken seriously in certain settings (sad but true)
However, when non-black people wear braids or dreads, it's cool and edgy or fashionable. It's the double standard that's hurtful to a lot of people. Where something that one group is demonized for, another is praised for.
There are also a lot of cultural nuances that have to do with it as well and it's a really complex issue to explain in a youtube comment.

Exactly I’ve always perm my hair because it’s easier for me. I don’t care if peoples hair is natural or straight because we can do so much with our hair. But as you said it’s always seen as unprofessional in the mostly white person view and seen as a fashion statement in Asia. I know they call it reggae hair in Korea and it’s mostly the Korean rappers or reggae artists wearing it along with the gold teeth and saying the n-word. Don’t get me started on Show Me The Money because they show can be cringy.

Thank you for sharing this, I had never thought of this perspective, it is a very good point.
I get that it wasn't a good choice, but it is hard to believe Kai would have thought of it in anything other than a respectful way. Unfortunately, too many beautiful cultural traits from all over the world are seen negatively in Western Culture.

I actually have been made more aware of cultural appropriation as a result of Kpop. I am a non-black person, so I can't say too much about my feelings on the hair. As you said, dreads aren't suited to most people's hair, because of the texture. I am fairly certain that the braids were used as a cultural stereotype to go along with the reggae/island vibe of the song. This isn't the first time Kai has been given a hair style like this, and its because of his beautifully melanin skin. It isn't just EXO that they do this with, and it isn't just SM that makes these faux pas either. There are a fair amount of cultural stereotypes found in Kpop, and South Korea really needs to do a better job. I feel so bad for Kai too.

I am from the black community and I don't see what's the big deal about a hairstyle.... I mean, I feel like people don't know the difference between appropriation and appreciation.... If we're gonna get butt hurt over every small thing, then I guess we shouldn't have French braids, eat taco's, have pasta, eat sushi (idk why I can only think of food right now😆, but I think you get my point).... My point is, they did this in the mv obviously because they thought it looks cool (cultural appreciation).... Like idk if the black community wants to be represented or not, there's a problem if we're not included and there's a problem when we are.... Like there's no win.... I'm from South Africa and whenever I see any type of black representation, I feel proud, as long as I can see that they're not doing it to be disrespectful.... I mean I don't think a stylist would do that and the company would give the go ahead if they thought it looked shitty, right.... Anyway I don't get all the anger and hate.... That's just my thoughts on it🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm black and I feel the same way, we live in a social media world so different cultures go on the internet and find styles and looks that they like, I do it all the time without really doing any research because I just find what I'm looking at cool and interesting it's not that deep (unless your using sacred cultural things for style thennn yeah that's not okay) but wearing dreads is just a hairstyle, yes it has history behind it but the black people of today aren't getting dreads cause they are thinking of their ancestors they are getting for the same reason other cultures get it because it looks cool

    • @exomake_mehorololo
      @exomake_mehorololo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

They mastered it for years.... Or so did the people SM works with/employs. It's not the groups who compose the songs or decide on them. SM uses the same people to compose songs for their groups in certain time periods.. That's why all their groups have the SM sound Even concepts dance moves outfits hair everything is used/ reused across groups.... Sometimes it would be nice it it was less formulaic and more individualised

Personally, I never understood the whole deal with “cultural appropriation”. Like, as long as people don’t make fun of other’s cultures and don’t have ill intent, I really don’t see the problem. Even dreads aren’t originally from black culture as it stems all the way back to the Minoan Civilisation. Are we going to say that black people appropriated it from them?
Like come on people, it’s literally hair. It’s a hairstyle. Labelling these things as “cultural appropriation” only divides people. The way we as society best develop is by learning from each other and APPRECIATING each other’s way of life and cultures.

      @bella11110 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Totally agree with you, the real problem is racism. None of us is a "pure race" nor our lifestyles are, so we all would actually be committing cultural appropriation if that is the case.
Doing this just separate us more, and I don't think it would help very much to reach the real objective which is all of us being seen and treated equally

Being in kpop for like 8 years I’ve honestly become immune to cultural appropriation and stuff and don’t usually care but a lot of these replies and comments are not it :(
Cultural appropriation is problematic because It doesn’t give people credit for their own culture, that’s why Kai having it among other idols sits the wrong way with me , also it doesn’t look good anyway lol
Cultural appropriation also has a nasty habit of giving the dominant group credit for aspects of a culture that they have taken, reinforcing the power imbalance between the two groups.
Cultural appropriation and racial insensitivity in K-pop is nothing new. There are notorious instances of Blackface going back to at least 2003, when the Bubble Sisters wore Blackface for their debut cover art and promotional images. Things haven’t exactly gotten better since then: G-Dragon wore an Afro wig and comb in the “MichiGO” video, and MAMAMOO apologised after performing “Uptown Funk” in Blackface at a concert in 2017. Black people have also been the subject of stereotyping, like when Yuri of Girls Generation did a racist impression of Black people on KBS’s Invincible Youth in 2010, and Wendy of Red Velvet imitated ‘Black’ mannerisms in 2018. But not everything has been so blatant. K-pop stars have also appropriated Black, Brown, and Indigenous cultures as aesthetic concepts in their work. Girl group T-ara’s 2012 video “yayaya” showed the band in stereotypical Native American dress, while some idols - especially those who have drawn from Black music styles like hip hop and R&B, such as Zico, EXO’s Kai, and Bigbang’s Taeyang - have worn dreadlocs and braids, essentially performing Blackness for profit.
Another example, Kylie Jenner was credited with starting an ‘edgy’ new hair trend, while black actress Zendaya faced criticism for wearing her hair the same way. What’s interesting about this, is that Zendaya’s natural hair was seen as a negative. But Kylie Jenner, a person with no ties to black culture, was given credit for taking something that wasn’t hers.

As a mixed race person(black and native American) initially I can see how people of color could be upset with Kai for wearing dreads. Kai has spoken at length of his love and appreciation for soulful music and that he vibes more with that genre of music hence his own music. I'm not from the black community, and I'm an EXO-L, but when CA became more evident in Kpop, I realized it was a serious issue that needed to be addressed by the label, staff, and the idol itself. In my opinion, EXO's or Kai's stylists need to educate themselves and be more mindful of their actions because this was not the only time they've done this (Kai's braids on Wolf MV & Kai's durag on MMMH). I don't want to blame Kai, because I don't know if he is aware of these matters, but I hope that he'll be educated about them and prevent himself from having them on future comebacks. Some may argue that idols have no influence over what their stylists want them to wear or what styles they should have, but I believe it was the rookies who mostly experienced it. And the seniors, who've been in the industry for years, become more involved and free in their outfits and styles, but I don't claim that all of them have this privilege. I think it becomes more problematic if the idol itself is aware of CA but still chooses to wear or do it nevertheless. It's simply upsetting that the majority of Kpop companies/labels did not provide their trainees or groups with any specific classes on cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation.

But to be fair dreads arent exclusive to african cultures or to black americans (mostly only them talk about this, more or less), as well as braids . There are/were so many different eras and cultures who used those styles on their heads.
I dont want to start an issue or anything like that, but people tend to forget that dreads and braids aint exclusive to just one group of people.

In general, I believe dreads and braids can be used by others (who also use them as part of their culture), but when it comes to certain kind of dreads or braids that belong to or originated with a specific community/group, I believe that's when they should be restricted from using it (?). @@ildefonso5778 I guess it all depends what something symbolizes. I dont really think that hairstyles are necessarily seen as something holy, I can be wrong but I never heard or read it somewhere. Mostly a garment or object or certain traditions are/ can be seen that way. Especially if they are also tied to a religion. That is something were I would be a bit more careful.
When you take a look into the history of humans you will see that it is quite natural to mix cultures, traditions, food, etc. People always moved around and basically appropriated certain cultural traits. People always influenced each other in one way or another. Sometimes it was forceful, which wasnt always the best way but we cant change it anymore.
If someone isnt sure he or she should definitely do some research what something means before using it. That is always a good thing to do. In general it is good to learn more about the world.
The only issue I understand and get fully behind peoples anger when other people, regardless of origin, make fun of other cultures and dont respect them. I would also get pissed if someone would do that with my country's heritage.
In general most people feel flattered when foreigners wear stuff from their country, or make music influenced by different cultures, etc. Mostly it is appreciation of different cultures. And sharing our cultures brings us together which is way better than dividing us by not allowing this and that.
So as long as there is not an mean intent behind it than there shouldnt be a problem of using in this case different hairstyles.
Also the word cultural appropriation is used tooo loosely these days that it keeps losing its meaning.
The only country I know of which screams all the time CA is the US. Other nations dont have a big problem with sharing cultures between each other.
I personally love it when people enjoy stuff from my culture and dont see why I should get offended by that.

The dreads are so bad 😩 but I saw a behind the scenes and Kai kinda complained that it was itchy and heavy (they’re extensions) but the stylist made him wear them. He didn’t pick it or want it, I’ll try to post a link to it.
Also, when I was in Korea my black friend always got stopped for her hair. They don’t know the history of it, but they see famous black people with certain hair styles and idolize it. They genuinely thought it was so cool, so I think some try to copy it

one of my absolute favorite songs from them and i love kai to death but honestly every time i watch the mv i'm like... get those caterpillars off your head lmao what are the stylists thinking? cause yeah like you said apart from it being cultural appropriation or not, it really just doesn't make sense or look good when you force straight hair into dreadlocks
and with the beat switch up thing, i think when it's done well it might still feel overwhelming on the first listen but once you hear it more and learn the song it makes it so much more interesting than some other songs that you can predict but then get boring or overplayed too quickly. i especially like it in this song because it has that scale that goes up and down that's a separate part the first two times but then the last time it's layered over the final chorus and it's soo cool to me

Knowing that black people against culture appropriation after googled on the history of dreads. However when any black culture appeared on a character in any form of performing art, it puzzled a character's personality. Don't knowing much about black culture especially I'm not stay in the States now, only can get to know more about it through the internet, books and in-person concert by chance.

Same here when it comes to their music. I am kind of mad at myself that I didnt enter the K-pop music world way before. Musically speaking there are sooo many amazing songs that in some aspects the West could learn a thing or two in my opinion. I guess that is why I also prerfer more the SM artists since they tend to be quite different.
To answer your question - Dreads to me were always just a hairstyle as well as braids at least in this day and age. But as everything in this world for some certain things have a more religious, cultural, ethnic meaning.... and well dreads as well as braids are a trait of different cultures if we want to be precise. Braids in various forms to me are visually way more beautiful and nicer to see than dreads... Personally never liked dreads as a style , regardless of them having also a purpose. To each their own I would say.

  • @joonie5107

I honestly feel like when it comes to the dreads, the stylist and company really did Kai dirty. This man has been getting hate ever since and been called a racist over and over again because of it. I do feel like the hate is so unnecessary specially considering that he’s a human being after all but then again I can’t say much because I’m not part of the black community. I don’t really know much about dreads and their meaning; I do know why they’re considered disrespectful or hurtful when non-blacks wear them though. I get that one’s struggles shouldn’t be used as just a fashion prop for others. However this is your culture and you’re allowed to feel a certain way or speak out about certain things. Like you said, this is a safe place. No one who’s mature enough will ever give you shit for standing up for your culture. Specially as a person of color, i understand the amount of struggle and shit poc have to face due to other’s ignorance.

I'm asian, and honestly, I didn't know anything about locks or cultural appropriation things until before I got into kpop. Not everyone is aware of diff cultures especially asians. We're fcking big and we didn't enslave people. We've got our own more diverse culture and bigger history. Western people are even worse when they live with black people and are part of their history. Give us time and help educate us with this matter. Coz we've got lot of things on this biggest continent

Kokobop in overall reminds me of hippie style because of all those sophisticated elements and colours. I'm not a black person so when I saw Kai, Suho and especially the pill I thought of 'hey this is kind of hippie...' since it's similar to how hippie was portrayed in the media when I was younger 🥴 weird + peace + non-black men with long dreads. Nothing wrong with doing things that bring you joy 💜 And not sure if you know or don't know but Kai is one of the members who has gotten sh*t for being on the dark side. kai’s dreads were… uh… a choice. definitely doesn’t seem respectful at all (coming from an asian person) to have done that style. i think they just wanted it bc they look “cool” or sometimes kpop groups will do it to fit a “hip hop” concept. it’s all for the aesthetic and not very self aware at all.

"Them dreads did not look good" THANK YOU. This is what I have been saying for years and I'm really surprised I don't see more reactors comment on it. I love the song and the aesthetic overall, but to me those don't look like real dreadlocs, they look like someone slapped a whole bunch of hair glue on Kai's head and made him into a porcupine. They're messier than the kid in my high school in 2002 who was doing his hair in spikes using freaking Elmer's Glue.
Frankly, to me, the whole thing feels uncomfortably like some stylist heard the song had a reggae beat and visual references to drugs and decided to put the darkest-skinned member of the group in a poorly-done parody of a black hairstyle. It's yikes on a number of levels. And it's not the first time, either - Kai also had cornrow braids with extensions in Wolf, but at least those were neat and well-done.
Considering S. Korea has their own cultural issues with colorism, the fact that it's specifically Kai, the darkest complexioned member of the group, who keeps getting the traditionally black hairstyles makes me very suspicious of whoever is making that style decision.

has cultural appropriation always been a big thing because I remember in the 80’s and 90’s everyone wore all different types of hair styles and I don’t ever remember it being an issue in it high or high school. I did not hear or become aware of the term Cultural appropriation until many many many years later when cancel culture on the internet became huge. I don’t mean this out of disrespect. I am just curious when it shifted? I know different generations things change ❤️
