what a great teacher, when i first heard the student play it, some things really bothered me about his interpretation but i couldnt really put it into words, greenhouse managed to define exactly what was going wrong. at 92 years of age he might not be able to play it perfectly himself anymore, but he makes a great teacher !

@TheSmoshmy Please understand, Greenhouse is about 90 years old, do you possibly think that a 90 years old Legend can play as well as when they were younger or around that age? I don't think so. Greenhouse whipped out this piece something he probably hasn't played in years, to show someone, who has probably been practicing for months, how to play it.

@NonoRocca This pupil doesn't like this recording either :) And it was recorded 6 years ago. He is the principal cellist in in the Munich Broadcast Orchestra now

@k73f Greenhouse was around 92 at the time of this video, but unfortunately he died in May last year =( Generally speaking though, it looks like being a classical musician can lead to long life - look at Greenhouse, he was 95 when he died, Casals was 98. Parisot is still around and he's in his 90s, Starker and Shuttleworth are well into their 80s, so hopefully this is a good sign!

Hello everyone! I am trying to find a specific video of Bernard Greenhouse and I can't. PLEASE HELP ME. In the video, he is teaching a young student, they are on a stage and there is an audience. The student plays something, and then Bernard plays different versions of it saying "everything is possible but no..." and then he plays back what the student had played that was the same notes without a single emotion. Is anyone able to point to me to the video? PLEASE?

I am not a 'cellist, but I actually liked the student's sound more than the master's..Greenhouse struck me as a bit rough.

I'm not sure that "the greats" are so much greater than students such as this.

So basically he's just telling the kid how to play like him. Not very good imo. He should tell him tips like lift your fingers etc, but not teach this kid how to play the song how he would.

He is teaching him generally about the music, all important things, phrasing, dynamic, sound, articulation, etc. It is fantastic lesson, if you listen closely!
