Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

Love starting my day with a cup of coffee and your videos. Sometimes I'm even able to get my boyfriend to watch with me which means they MUST be good because he is a mechanic who has a 2 second attention span for anything that isn't cars. :^)

Never thought about saturated vs non saturated colors before. That's one more thing I will mix into my painting arsenal.

"I wait long enough before I turn the lights on".. That cracked me up, because many of us are guilty of putting the highlights too soon, and then the painting doesn't work anymore 😂

Yes, the darkest lights are always lighter than the lightest darks. I have a little detail to add to your saturation discussion. It’s the difference between the saturation of reflected light vs. radiated light. With reflected light the saturation of the color of an object decreases as the amount of light hitting the surface increases. With radiated light the saturation of the light is simply the saturation of the object itself, ie. the candle flame inside the pumpkin while the saturation of the color inside the pumpkin reflecting the light from the flame decreases the closer the interior surface is to the flame. (Lol. Goes back to taking general physics in college.😂)
I love your videos even though I am most recently painting significantly more and more at the abstracted end of the spectrum these days rather than objectively from life.

Lighting is half the fun of Halloween, I think. Creating the atmosphere, its my favorite holiday.
Would you say that its okay to sacrifice some(!) value readability for saturation/visual interest in a piece? I'm struggling to figure out where that's appropriate/how much. With your house/boats both the saturation and value seemed pretty much linked (the house is bright and vibrant, compared to the trees, darker and less saturated with some exceptions in other parts of the piece). I was under the impression that value readability is generally the most important aspect.
