  • In this video I am doing an upgrade on a contractors style vanity light. I discover there's no junction box and they've put the connections in the wall. I show the solution of this problem in a couple of different ways.

Do you never have a band aid on your left forefinger? I love it!

Inspector missed something! Yikes. I have to replace a similar light and hope mine is better than that! Nice job replacing it.

What would you have done if that's was a pvc pipe? Looks like a stack pipe or drain line

I probably would have moved the box over to miss it and modify the light so it's still in the center. But on the other hand, I doubt you would ever find a vent stack there because the plumber knows that the electrician was going to put a light above the sink in pretty much every bathroom.

seems to be common practice to not use an electrical box for vanity lights. same happened in my home in all the bathrooms.

Yes that's true. They like to put the wiring connection inside the light itself. I guess it'll work ok, but I prefer it in a box behind the light... 😀

Our old bathroom vanity light has a junction box on the outside of the wall. Do to no room behind the wall. What do we do in this case?

You should be able to mount the light fixture to the junction box like the old one was.. It's not ideal, but the only choice is to try and recess the junction box. But you said there's no room.

A pancake box would work if the cable is long enough.
