I bought a Topologie utility tote during a layover in Hong Kong after realising the canvas tote I’d brought with me from home wasn’t going to do me any favours on the life admin/organisation front. I’ve traveled with the bag through nine countries over the last 12 weeks and it’s truly been a lifesaver - it’s helped me carry a decent amount of essential travel junk while keeping it fairly well organised. Such a ridiculously good bag

Hey there! Got here through the algo. Bonne Gueule is actually aimed at men that are not into fashion to begin with but want to learn how to dress well and for their body. They started as an educational platform for materials, cuts, tailoring, etc. and grew into a brand. So yeah, basics that you buy to look good in indeed, but not for the reasons you state here. (I know one of the owners since junior high for info)
My one gripe when I went to visit Gaijin was that they had items from Japanese fast fashion brands alongside the high-end labels. I remember being a teenager looking at gyaru and neo-gyaru magazine scans on livejournal and Moussy and Snidel (which I would personally consider on the same tier of "elevated fast fashion" as Sezane/& Other Stories/Reformation) were the brands to buy at the time. I balked when I pulled out a simple jersey dress from Moussy at Gaijin and the price was well over 100 euro. These brands usually go for less-than-Zara prices secondhand in Japan :O
I love your taste in pants, every single pair are amazing! I think different silhouettes count as different enough, maybe personal preference dictates that one design element is more important for you, but to me the two khakis and denim jackets feel different enough to provide some variety.
Bonnegueule are good for basics with a lot of thought given to fabrics, sourced from very good mills, and made in Europe. For exemple Shaggy sweater but instead of shetland they used a combination of Alpaca, Yak and Merino, Outerwear with Climashield. Sweaters with cashmere from Cariaggi. French made corduroy. etc. I got a couple of pieces and they are very nice.
I bought a bomber style jacket constructed of three decorative kimonos, with athletic style gold stripes on the sleeve, black collar and cuffs! It is stunning!
I’m glad you had a great time! I think you should keep both pairs of khakis, ones a rectangle and ones an oval. I love that denim jacket and empathize with the mild struggle you endured to get it 😂. For some reason I didn’t like looking at the texture of the denim set, which is crazy because I know I’d love it irl + I didn’t get the same feeling from the rest of the store pics. It would be so cool if you did a styling vid with those LR3 pants post-hemming!

i love topologie! i bought one bag online, fell in love and went to the flagship show when i was in Osaka and got stuff that was sold out online. they can really be the cherry on top for your outfits to make them more city-boy

In defense of Husbands, I think it offers a very specific aesthetic - quite 70s louche; what you’d see Gainsbourg or YSL wear…maybe a bit Nutter as well. It’s not trad IMO, and you’d def look like you were wearing a costume if you wore it to a trad banking job. I am sure if you’re an adept shopper, you can replicate it in vintage, but it comes from a very specific POV IMO. Whether it is anyone’s taste is another matter.

The denim set looks amazing, one of the few times I'd totally buy designer stuff. Also, menswear on women is so underrated, and you wear it very well (coming from a male). I've actually been thinking recently that I should start trying out some select womenswear when I get the chance, because it's often shorter tops and wider & higher rise trousers, both things that I find very hard to find in menswear and that I prefer - I love straight trousers and the classic higher waistline silhouette so I ether tuck my tops (most common) or want short things (for summer, or layering over tucked things). Unfortunately, as you note, sales assistant often don't seem to appreciate it very much so I'd probably only do that in stores where I can browse on my own - even with just menswear I already hate the pressure of the "personal shopper"-style boutiques. In fact for men in my experience it's even worse, I suspect they aren't used to men being deliberate about clothing and not just passively accept what they suggest me.

Hm, I am not entirely with you on the Husbands thing. So for Bonnegueule, I am with you on the "not quite interesting enough" part, but for some basics, they were at one point in my life a good deal. When the clothes were on sale or less expensive before the Ukraine war. As for Husbands, it's an entirely different ballpark. I would say I am very inspired by the same stuff Husbands is and it is true that you can find some of the things second hand. But less so than you think if you are not in NYC or Paris. Their style is very 70s inspired but in great quality. It's genuinely not that easy to find. It's not just a trouser, it's a slight flare high waist trouser and I genuinely spent months trying to find one and then had to bite the bullet, save up and get Husbands. It's possible, but they definitely have a way stronger aesthetic and cultural referencing (and quality) than more general stores like Bonnegueule or Fursac.

I feel like Husbands is one man’s vision of Paris expressed in clothing. It’s fairly traditional, the shapes, fabrics etc, and I don’t think it tries to be much more than that, which I respect a lot. I saw the founder Nicolas Gabard on the metro one time, most stylish mf I’ve ever seen, extremely nonchalant, wearing high heel boots in a crowded sticky mess
Cool video. Like the content. 700 euros for one item of clothing is a lot of money for me. Maybe it becomes worth it with the cost per wear count. It has to be really special at that price, I think. I bought a leather jacket for £800 because of it being a lifetime item & for a more personal reason but I don't think I'd spend much more than £200-300 on future purchases

Ironic that the store is called "gaijin" but sells Japanese clothes, since gaijin means "foreigner." And some foreigners in Japan feel that the word is insulting, though it doesn't really bother me. The "jin" part is pronounced "jeen."
