Why does the oil and gas industry need government subsidies if it’s so profitable? Why are oil and gas companies sabotaging any research and development in green energy and blocking subsidies to enhance greentech but want more subsidies and public land for exploratory drilling? That’s rules for thee but not for me. The hypocrisy is palpable.

    • @Globovoyeur

      This assumes that what ExxonMobil is pushing is equivalent to what First Solar is pushing. First Solar is described by Wikipedia as "an American manufacturer of solar panels, and a provider of utility-scale PV power plants and supporting services that include finance, construction, maintenance and end-of-life panel recycling." Both are publicly traded companies trying to maximize their profit. But one sells fossil fuels, while the other sells carbon-free power. Thus, you assume an equivalence that does not exist.

      @@Globovoyeur Well, I for one, am glad that there is some lobbying to counter the corruption of science by environmental activism that cares not about being logical or practical and just blindly wants to give money away with the notion that it is never enough. These fossil fuel companies are just evil no matter what they do, in your eyes. So why in the world should they be trying to appease somebody like you or AOC that will never be happy despite the need we all have for fossil fuels. And I don't want politicians giving endlessly blank checks to "First Solar" or any company because you think every bit of money funneled their way is nothing but nobel despite it being everyone's hard earned tax dollars that are definitely not endless.

    • @kerryb2689
      @kerryb2689 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@colico14 There's 2 ways to think about it.
      2. The fossil fuel industry will make the same profit regardless of whether there is a subsidy or not, so you might say the subsidy passed along to anyone who uses gasoline, diesel, natural gas, or electricity (pretty much everyone).
      Because it's a supply/demand market the subsidies may even have the effect of being multiplied....ie. a 10% increase in supply causes a 50% decrease in price.
      Most people don't comprehend this concept. Just think about what happens to the stock market when it crashes...10% of the money is pulled out of the market, and the price crashes by 50%.

      @@noneya9444 If you mean check the bank account of fossil fuel industry...(ie. the stock price), yes they got richer because of people who were still working during the pandemic (and didn't need the borrowed handout) placed it all in the stock market. Supply/demand price of the stock has nothing to do with the real wealth of a company,. Their wealth is in the property equipment and commodity they own or have control of. Same thing applies to bitcoin, or even dollars for that matter. Just heard on the radio counties are still trying to figure out how to spend covid money...they will spend it on wage bonuses. Remember when oil price went to negative $40? that was also supply/demand for oil the commodity. I think my angst is directed at those who would lay blame on corporations for supplying a product the world can't presently survive without,
      Instead of making this an individual problem by people who waste energy.
      For instance, I was driving at 2 AM last night and drove past many "Closed" businesses that had sign lights on, and in many cases
      Also had interior lights on. The car dealerships had bright flood lights on their parking areas. While I realize this is to protect their merchandise from vandals and thieves, I think the installation of motion detectors to turn these lights on would be a step in the Green direction.

      Oil and gas gets all sorts of subsidies. We need to develop technology around renewables. The rest of the world is doing it. The US is already way behind when it comes to electric cars. Fossil fuels will not be completely replaced, but their lobbying against a climate change response has to stop. We all pay for extreme weather, from droughts to fires, tornadoes etc. Corporation function on short term profits, a change in energy production needs longer term planning.

    • @sharonminsuk

      @@sabinereynaudsf How much money is spent on influencing climate change science to be alarmist? There are big leaps in logic you are making here. You go from talking about subsidies to we need to do what other countries are doing because they are doing it already. I bet you believe we fall behind even China in making efforts to stop climate change despite China burning way more coal than all other countries combined. The US government spends billions on climate change research. Electric vehicles are heavily subsidized and don't pay fuel taxes. What more do you ask? You just want to keep up with the Jones. And then you blame all extreme weather events on oil companies being short cited. Who was to blame for all of the countless amounts of droughts in the past? That's pretty big leaps in logic that are just based on "we should do what other people are doing" and people wonder why climate change alarmists get accused of sounding like chicken little and not actually following science at all. The predictions AOC is referring to are not settled at all. The magnitude of global warming is and should be debated amongst climatologist and it ranges a lot, but that doesn't go with AOC's self righteousness. I'll take what people like you say seriously when you sound rational and seem to actually understand scientific research and computer modeling. I've heard that because we can barely predict the weather in a week's time that these predictions that are years out are straight up guessing. I see the argument but I see the other side, too. Its not as though they're hand-in-hand, right?

    • @SophiaAstatine
      @SophiaAstatine 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not sure about comparing the two. The reason it's harder to predict weather is that it is somewhat chaotic, amongst numerous other issues. The global climate isn't about localised weather phenomena, but general conditions spanning the entire planet. Climate is the foundation for weather, but it isn't the weather, so you can make general predictions about what kinds of weather is possible on the basis of climate conditions, but you still can't predict the exact time of day a given event happens.
      Weather predictions depend on tracking what is in the air and how it is moving, among other things, to give a relatively accurate time and day for something to happen, hence going too far ahead means a lot of those local parameters can change in the mean time. That is not the same method that is used when talking about the general changes to weather in the far future, which is based on the development of the global climate.

    • @sharonminsuk
      @sharonminsuk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or to put it more simply: climate and weather are two different things. Climate projections that are years out are *_not_* "predicting the weather". Don't know where you've "heard" that but it is a misleading argument.

    • @sharonminsuk
      @sharonminsuk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This analogy occurs to me: it's like actuaries (the mathematicians who work for insurance companies). They can't predict whether you'll get sick next week or get hit by a bus tomorrow. But they can predict with deadly accuracy (because the profits of the insurance company depend on it) exactly what their payouts will be for years to come.

      @@PJ-gx3ji sure they do. But at some point if government subsidies are offsetting operational costs while the profit margins increase and yet remain widely untaxable, why are we subsidizing a profitable industry? That too at the opportunity cost of subsidizing RnD for renewables? I don't get the logic of saying renewables are unable to compete in a free market when free hand outs are given to an industry with profit margins that would make Jesus blush, and renewables and clean energy remain untested and research on increasing performance and energy yield remains underfunded. What part of the free market says established industry gets hand outs and disruptors get scraps and are expected to make magic or be deemed a failure? Have you seen the kind of money oil and gas companies make? It's crazy. It's a racket. Really it is. OPEC is a racket and energy independence is sought by occupying foreign countries rather than developing sustainable energy practices. The subsidies for renewables are so tiny compared to oil and gas that no one is incentivized to make the switch. Oil and Gas firms are stockpiling most of these subsidies anyway because the profit margins are ludicrious while convincing us they're necessary to keep gas prices from fluctuating and maintaining supply. But it's far from the truth. Their money trail is so revealing. You ought to check out the ingenious ways the industry has swindled entire governments of other countries and stashed so much cash for a rainy day. It's almost insulting.
