I find the easiest way for measurement's when mixing (if u need diff shades & can't store) is to use a mid/lrg barrel for a syringe (no needle on end) usually free/50c at any pharmacy etc, medium/large hole so easy to suck up the paint & the measurement's on the side is your perfect guide! My personal op & has worked well for me!

+brenda olivares We carry both Angelus and Feibings leather paint. They are both acrylics. Most flexible acrylic paints should work fine on leather.

Also...try mixing in a Textile Fabric medium...it helps make Acrylic bendable...so it wont crack. TM has directions on how to mix it.
Now...the other thing is prepping your leather surface too. So, if you are painting, ie, a lighter color over a darker color...might be worthwhile to put a base coat of white first.
Treat the White paint with Textile Medium. I AM GUESSING on this. BUT the reason I say this... I am using Acrylic on Sneakers - and adding in the Textile medium for that reason. So the paint wont' crack. And it works wonderful. And sneakers bend more than leather...so, makes sense?
Any paint company - Folk Art, Ceramcoat, etc...has a textile medium paint additive. at Michaels, AC Moore, or Hobby Lobby, for example.

However, just to be doubly sure while I'm in such an information rich forum - I'm intending to customise my headphones a bit more by painting the faux leather headband that runs along the top. This method will work fine with any materials that are are similar in texture to leather? (Will of course test on a variety of more terrible and less meaningful headphones in my possession.)
I also purchased a finish as well as a textile paint from our local art supply store. You would always recommend doing a finish after the job is complete? I have a niggling worry at the back of my mind that I'm going to skip an important step and have the colours start to run if I'm caught in the rain while wearing my headphones (which is literally any time I'm not asleep.)

If I have leather work boots but want to paint a design on them how can I ensure it won't rub off since the boots get dirty fast? Would I just have to stitch in the design instead?
Prep your surface well. Use quality paint. Use a good acrylic finish and multiple coats. This will hopefully lead to your best success.
Excellent video! Thank you so very much! I found a beautiful gunmetal, metallic Coach purse at a church rummage sale. It has a spot on it that looks like a liquid has been spilled and faded the color. It almost looks white. I purchased the Angulus leather paint in metallic pewter & silver. They were too light so I quickly rugged them off. They had turned the spot blue. So I’m going to get the black to darken the pewter and hope that works. Thanks again!

You could get or make the numbers out of fabric, and then stitch or glue them. Just like with patches on biker kutte vests.

Quick question....If I want to paint the flowers with acrylic paint, should I do that first then dye the rest of it after the fact? Or should I go ahead and dye the piece of leather in it's entirety and THEN paint the flowers? I would not want to leave the remainder of the vegtan leather in it's natural state.
Usually acrylic paint will be your last step so that you don't have to worry about smearing it when applying your dye or antique.

I only have Acrylics with which to work and I was always too wary to try them on leather.
Ok, I'm confused. I bought a Carmel hide embossed alligator. I want to rub a turquoise color on top, lightly hitting just the high spots so the Carmel still shows. Should I use alcohol dye? Acrylic angelus paint? Or dye mixed with conditioner?? And should I deglaze?

Hello! Depending on your project and needs for a sealer, you might be able to skip the sealer...but over time this will cause the acrylics to crack and wear more. Are normal painting acrylic paints suitable for painting leather or will they rub off?
Its not that they will rub off, however some acrylic paints can be brittle, or dry stiff. Angelus paints are made to be flexible so that it moves with the leather.

Thanks for stopping in! If you noticed the TV upfront, we play some of the videos there. :D For cleaning painted leather we recommend using water or something that isn't very abrasive as much as possible. If you find a stain or mark you want to get out you may try something like Angelus Spot Remover (which could take off the top coat) or even oxalic acid (may not remove the top coat). You may find that you'll still need to paint back over and reseal whatever you're cleaning when using a harsher chemical.

Is the paint flexible after it dries? I'd like to repaint some horse tack.
Yes, leather paint has a higher amount of pvc in it which makes it more flexible. Multiple thin layers also ensures no cracking. My biggest worry with horse tack though and which I couldn't tell you for sure what the best solution is, is that is a high wear item and I've read some complaints of the durability of acrylic leather paint, that it is easily scratched/worn off. If this is true then I'm guessing you have to choose your finish carefully or apply multiple coats of it to protect it. I don't think it's impossible though, just got to experiment and find what works for you and your needs.

I am an artist and I just got mesmerized about the fact of customizing my own leather shoes (my athletic shoes like nike's) I have seen all the videos that they work with Angelus and the results are astonishing!! but my questions are:
Once I finish my painting, I see Angelus have different finish effects. Do they protect the paint from chipping or peeling eventually? or if I get some dirt stain on them, will I be able to just rub them off with soap and water or anything else without dissapearing the paint?
and my other question is: for the soles, I have seen many tutorials where they paint the soles (to match the midsoles)...can I use the regular leather paint on them too without chipping later? do I need to spray any kind of sealer to protect them? I have seen Angelus has sole paint but they are just few colors.

+Maria Latham The Angelus Finishes will help to protect the paint from minor scratches/scrapes. They come in different gloss levels for you to choose from. Angelus makes a cleaner for shoes, but if you just have a small area you need to clean then a mild detergent with water should be fine for spot cleaning. And I think that you can use just their regular paints for the soles.

Hello, Is it possible to paint leather shoes with acrylic paint (not Angelus) and seal it so it won't crack? or would I be better off just using Angelus paint?
Hello!
The cracking of the paint is caused by the bending of the shoe, if your paint is not flexible enough or your sealer isn't flexible it will still crack no matter what you use. The reason Angelus is popular with shoes is because of the fact that it is flexible and bends with the shoe. That doesn't mean that you cannot use other acrylics but if they dry hard they will most likely crack.

Poundz978 I've never really done a bunch of research on the different acrylic paints that are readily available at your local hobby or craft stores. I would imagine that if you can find an acrylic paint that states it can be used on fabrics, it should be somewhat flexible.

Hi, J & J True Outdoor Adventures! Although we recommend leather acrylic paint, you can use Walmart acrylic paint. Just make sure the leather surface is clean and dry before you paint. It will likely not last as long as leather acrylic paint, but it will work!

I'm painting shoes and have used an acrylic paint that is not Angelus. I had problems with it cracking when the shoes were worn and the material bent. I also did not use a varnish coat on top. Does Angelus paint crack? Or would the cracking have been avoided if I'd used a varnish?
Angelus paint is specifically made for the shoe industry. If applied correctly (thin coats, multiple coats if necessary) it wont crack. It doesn't need a top coat, but if you do apply one, it does need to be a spray coat. If you rub something on it you can smear the paint.

I painted an old breast collar I had with acrylic paints and it came out really nice. I was just wondering if you think I should use a sealer or some type of finish considering that it's horse tack and comes in contact with water occasionally. If so, what would you recommend? Thank you!

Because it is an acrylic paint it already contains a kind of sealant. But you can always spray some saddle lac or something similar over the top of it just as a precaution. I will definitely suggest a spray over a wipe on as that could smear the paint.

I mixed the dye and the paint before I watched this video, it didn't come out sticky but I am worried the paint will rub off if I apply resolene to finish it. Will it rub off for sure? I applied 3 coats and it's mostly dye. I don't have access to spray finish
Using any sort of sealant that rubs on will almost always result in the paint rubbing off/smearing. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you.
Why buy the Fiebing's or Angelus? Is it different from other acrylic paint, which costs a lot less?
Hi, Philip! Fiebing's and Angelus paints are specially formulated for leather. These paints will age and wear better on the leather than regular acrylic paint.

Hi there great video:) I need to buy some angelus paint but I have no cash whatsoever at the moment. I started doing a practice pair of shoes with normal acrylic paint thinned with water. It seems to have worked well and dosnt come off with water. I wondered if you know whether this will work the same as angelus.? Or what the difference between these acrylics are. I want to customise 3 or so pairs like this then i can sell them and afford the angelus kit. But I worry they will not last long enough. Thanks for the video. Also i heard you can use normal acrylics dilluted with a little acetone?
mama cita Do not use acetone to thin acrylic paint. It will break it down rather than thin it.
Regular acrylics tend to shrink over time and not adhere to leather the way pro leather paints do. This leads to cracking, fading and even peeling. The leather also must be prepped or deglazed in order for even the leather paints to permanently adhere to.
Personally, I’d not sell anything that didn’t use pro leather paints, I wouldn’t want to waste all the effort nor damage my rep as an artist by selling something that just won’t last. That’s just my 2 cents. Best of luck and success!

mama cita Still need answer to year-old question? No, the acrylic will NOT adhere to plastic/faux leather. Don’t even bother coz waste of paint and time. It will peel right off and won’t stand a chance in a spring shower either. Item needs to be real leather.

Hi guys, just wondering if I can use Angelus leather acrylic paint on faux leather? I have a handbag I want to paint (I don't know exactly what material it is made from but I'm pretty sure it's not real leather) but the bag is too orange in tone for my liking so I was thinking of using the dark taupe Angelus paint. Any advice on how I should prep the material before painting? Sandpaper/rubbing alcohol/an Angelus prep product? If I am painting on faux leather can I thin the paint down? What should I use to do this? Would more layers of thinned down paint be better than just painting a few non thinned down layers? Also will the paint work on the fabric part of a zip okay? Sorry for all the questions but I need some help! Thanks
You can try using leather Angelus leather acrylic paint on the faux leather, but it probably won't stay very long, because leather is porous and can grip paint. If you do try painting the handbag, cleaning it with rubbing alcohol will help. Sandpaper will also help to give the paint a surface to grip, although it will give the bag a rougher finish. Water will thin the paint, and more layers of thinned down paint would be better. And yes, the paint will work on the fabric part of the zipper. Good luck! :)
Would you have to prep a leather jacket before painting it? I know on leather shoes you do.
I buy name brand leather purses and fix them up by using a make up sponge and adding color where they need it. Then I shine them up and we're ready to go!

I'm doing a project for a birthday present using acrylic paint on leather with a smooth finish on it. I read on another website that before applying the paint, I need to rough up the surface of the leather with sandpaper so the paint can stick better. Is this true?
Roughing up the surface would be helpful but not necessary. Using sandpaper will help the pigments stick to the leather, but be careful not to rough up the leather too much, or your paint will come out uneven on the surface.

I am wanting to paint on my spare tire cover on the back of my Jeep, what kind of paint should I use? And should I spray some sort of bond over it ? Trying to consider the weather as well.
Hi, Lisa! We would recommend cleaning the spare tire cover really well. You may want to try cleaning the cover with vinegar or alcohol. As for the paint, the tire cover is likely vinyl, so we would recommend using some kind of automotive paint.
hello, I'm artisan in making equipment for horses (French so sorry if there are errors in my words I use a software translator) I realize a lot of customization as: carving and painting motifs. Until now I used the paint color and Fiebing cova's acrylic paint, but I found that their quality of painting is very bad and eventually crack. Recently I use "Angelus" paintings are beautiful but I am concerned because I already has lots of finishing products. So I wonder if I can use my products complement this Angelus painting.
As I have "Deglazer" of Fiebing's is what iron very well the case or I have to necessarily buy the "Deglazer" Angelus?
For finishing and final protective paint, should I buy the "acrylic finish" Angelus or I can use my products? I have résolene, Tan kote, Leather sheen ... (all Fiebing's) Some of my products could go?

+hey satawa Hello, Angelus paint works quite well, we recommend it the most. It is made for shoes so it is very flexible if applied in thin coats. When finishing products that have paint on them we always recommend a spray finish- like Saddle Lac or Masters Quick Shine. Rub on finishes will sometimes smear the paint even if it is dry.
I have a question? Did you mention what you seal the leather with after painting it?
He said you did not need to seal with another acrylic finisher as the paint is acrylic itself and the sealant finishers you would likely use are also acrylic so it's just more acrylic on acrylic. Using another acrylic finisher like Angelus or Fiebing's Resolene would amount to just another layer of a clear acrylic.
I bought a new light oil breastcollar that id like to dye chocolate colored and then paint some artwork on. It currently has a very shiny finish on the leather and when I bend the breastcollar I notice it gets little fine crackles on the surface. I'm not sure how I should prepare the leather so that I can evenly stain it a darker color, and then not have my painted artwork wont crack easily. Should I sand the surface all over, or use some sort of deglazer?
To re-dye the breast collar you will have to deglaze it. This removes the finish that is on the leather already. After re-dying you will have to finish it again to keep the dye from rubbing out on things.

Fiebings makes a deglazer but it is just acetone. You can get it at your local hardware store.
I bought Angelus leather paints and Angelus leather finisher. When I bought the finisher I thought it was meant to use on top of the leather paint to seal it, but now that I read the bottle I believe it's meant to finish regular leather. Is the Angelus leather sealer going to be an effective on top of the leather paint? thanks!
You can use it over the top of the paint. However, when it comes to sealing over the top of paint we always recommend using a spray application because the paint can smear if you use a wipe on application.
I have a leather sectional my children ruined with glitter nail polish. I can't part with it because of how expensive it was. I've seen where a lady painted her couch with this and it turned out well. I'm really nervous to do that though. What are your thoughts? Our sofa is cream right now and I wanted to go grey or brown with it.
Hi, Jennifer! It would take A LOT of paint to paint a couch! We would recommend trying to remove the nail polish with a deglazer, like Fiebing's deglazer (springfieldleather.com/Deglazer-4oz). It'll probably take the nail polish right off. Then, apply a conditioner, like Bick-4 (springfieldleather.com/Cleaner-Suede-Nubuck-8oz). It may take some of the color off, but it would be a lot easier to try to paint that in than repaint the whole couch. Hope this helps! Good luck!! :)

ksasbr107 You're wanting to re-color the interior of your car? That would be an enormous undertaking and there is a possibility of it going terribly wrong. I would recommend getting it re-upholstered in the leather color you want by a professional before trying to strip all the leather in your car and re-dying it.
I painted a leather jacket & it turned out a little stiff. I applied a couple coats of leather conditioner & is still a little stiff. I read the comments about mixing paint w a fabric medium beforehand, but I painted it last night. Do you have any recommendations for softening the leather after its been painted? Should I wash it? Thanks!
Hey, there! The best you can probably do at this point is continue to apply leather conditioner. If you wash it, it's at your own risk! Each leather washes a bit differently, and paint also sticks a bit different depending on the leather. Good luck! If you have further questions about leather painting in the future, let us know :)
What kind of paint do I use for painting on leather jackets in a bright and sharp way with a really nice and glossy finish. Also it shouldn't wear out in rain or with time?
We would recommend Angelus acrylic paint. (You can find some here: springfieldleather.com/Chemicals/Acrylic-Paints ) The paint remains flexible and should be fine if it gets wet, although we would suggest minimizing the time you wear it in the rain! Okay. You will not need a white primer, but you do need to make sure that there is not a glaze on the jacket. You will need to use a deglazer, like this one: springfieldleather.com/Deglazer-4oz .

Zacatecas17 what are you wanting to paint? What product or type of leather? It shouldn't affect the feel of the leather, as long as you apply light/thin coats.
