We just think that Benjamin Franklin invented everything short of sliced bread.

    • @MulanBelle
      @MulanBelle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thomas Jefferson invented quite a bit too. I remember as a kid watching the cartoon Histeria! and one of their songs was about Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin listing their inventions.

Wikipedia: "While he was in London, he developed a much-improved version of the glass harmonica, in which the glasses rotate on a shaft, with the player's fingers held steady, instead of the other way around. He worked with the London glassblower Charles James to create it"

Funny story. Back around 2005 or so, the gov of my province released a tourism commercial with a woman singing a beautiful song in Gaelic . Unfortunately, nobody bothered to properly translate the song until a University Professor. As it turned out the lyrics in English said - my family is starving , my children Are naked, darkness is all around us, this place is horrible, I want to go home! It was taken off the TV immediately afterwards 🤣

I feel less lonely when you post videos and share your lives with us. I'm bipolar and you guys are such a comfort. Weirdly enough my cat LOVES your videos too (except for nakey Ben Franklin LOL) - he always stares when Justine is on the screen. Much love from Nebraska!

The fancy "S" wasn't originally an s. It was a substitute for a "th" like sound in middle english, which early printing type sets didn't have when printing presses were first brought to England. After people started reading broadsheets are other printed items, they got used to that new spelling and there wasn't enough public pressure to make printer make a new letter piece in their set.

The best salad I ever had was quite simple. Lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, sunflower seeds, and olive oil. A touch of salt/pep. I think it's the best because of the memory that comes with it. I stayed with a billet family for a few weeks, in a beautiful house in the middle of the woods. My first morning there I woke up to a live trio of musicians playing classical music, and it wafted through the house. They were practicing for the next leg of their tour, and my billet mother accompanied them on the piano the night before at their concert. The whole experience there just made everything taste better.

A lot of the music back then came from minstrels who traveled about from town to town singing their own compositions that they came up with to spread the region's news. That is why so many songs were sad or tragic, they were about the news of the day.

I’m going to take a guess here, and say that it was candy. 🍭🍬It was something that many wives created, and that you would limit your kids from eating a bunch of. Second guess would be cookies and cakes ? 🎂🍪Interesting question! Can’t wait to see what others thought. 🤔

I come from a family of musicians. My grandparents home was the one where everyone came to make music. Their home was full of music. And not the sad kind. All kinds from classic violin to banjo (bluegrass). And my grandmother was born in 1883. My grandfather was born in 1873. So, a little later than your time period, but before Edison!

I dunno about you, but I just couldn't live without plumbing, especially "the convenience"! I agree that modern lighting is a wonderful invention. When I have a power outage at night, it's scary when I grope around in pitch darkness trying to reach my solar powered lantern parked on the windowsill - and it's annoying when I can't read a magazine while "enthroned". Loved your take on those sad old ballads! 🤣

Great video. I don't think Ron is afraid of the dark. Maybe a bit nervous of the creatures that can see in the dark. He probably was not afraid of the sea. But now he has heard is love. sing his remembrance song he will be very wary of the waves maybe. For the names of food time in England/Britain/ United Kingdom or whatever they call this place nowadays are easy. In the south it's breakfast ,lunch, dinner, then tee . North is breakfast, dinner , tee, then supper. I think over here they must ignore the three meals a day rule because they have four names for eating times. You will always know a southerner from a northerner though. Because come midday when it's time to eat. Thier own body clock & mouth will utter the words lunch or dinner. I have always said dinner . I only say lunch when I am messing with accents & places. But that's just a bit of fun with no malice intented. 👍👍💚💚.

:) :) it's like Rachel ray and her husband only 200 years ago.. very entertaining !
A note about pewter; Ancient pewter contained about 70 percent tin and 30 percent lead. Such pewter, also called black metal, darkened greatly with age, and the lead readily leached out in contact with acidic foods. Not good. But, Modern pewter is about 91 percent tin, 7.5 percent antimony, and 1.5 percent copper; the absence of lead makes it safe to use for dishes and drinking vessels. The surface of modern pewter is bluish white with either a crisp, bright finish or a soft, satin sheen. Saw it on the internet so it must be true :)

    SERIOUSLY!
A few drops on your fingers under your arms works. Also use corn flour/corn starch in creases etc. It stops many problems & the smells as it stops bacteria growth which causes the smell & itch.

Ron, better watch it. Justine has over 3/4 million subscribers watching her prepare those wonderful meals.
Maybe you could focus on other aspects of frontier life, like hunting & fowling, butchering and smoking & jerking meats, skinning and meat/hide preparations, early farming, smithing, etc...
...hey, what has happened to the treasure hunt story? I'm still intrigued. Even if you don't find it, trying to solve clues and leads would make for a good story.
Don't get me wrong. We love watching y'all eat those meals. Sometimes I can just smell those meats and sauces...
With things going the way they are, more and more people are looking at the self sufficient life styles now and it would be kind of a education to learn the early frontier ways it was done.

just stumbled upon your channel surfing for recipes and out of sheer curiosity I clicked on working class supper... dont know why I got here, maybe coz I was searching for history stuff... I'm from Southeast Asia and in the provinces when I was growing up (in my late 50's) there were villages without electricity and running water, they used lanterns and artesian well pumps ... and because there was nothing to do when it gets dark... you can imagine... early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy and wise... but not very wealthy considering he had 10 mouths to feed... if its not too much to ask can you put a link in the description for the eating part coz I had to switch the channels from early American and Frontier Patriot? or DUH I'm just not 21st century and embarrassing myself?
