I started listening to Denver’s music while in CO on a roadtrip. This is the song that really grabbed my attention and turned me into a full on fan. Also, be sure to watch the live version of this he does on Geraldo Rivera’s Goodnight America show from 1974. Amazing.
Thanks for reacting to more obscure songs like this one, many times the deep tracks are the best ones. Much better responses to this one than In the Grand Way, the only other one I've seen from you both, I'll be checking out more, thanks.
Hi, another great reaction, this is one of John's best . It's a fantastic song, with terrific guitar playing from John, and the late Mike Taylor, from John's band. It tells you a story, like many of John's songs. His voice is unbelievable, pitch perfect. Great job.👍
Justin & Camilla: Denver said he began writing abt Vietnam Vets still in POW camps('72); & imagined their loved ones waiting at home; then people stuck places they'd couldn't get out of. All prisoners of a type. The verses work the ideas in reverse, finishing w the Vets in camps hoping to get home, & the then national plea, "bring the boys home."
John is my favorite and has a wide range of styles he did songs in! Even joined in the 80s synch sound with "Don't Close Your Eyes Tonight" and I have another rock-type song called "Anthem-Revelation." Also, John always had a GREAT band behind him. Like he had Elvis' guitar player Jim Burton for a long time, guitarist Pete Huttlinger on in his Wildlife Concert Band, always had Jim Horn on woodwinds, etc. If you listen to "Anthem-Revelation," hear another song in the same video as its short...I recommend "Follow Me" which is a top 3 favorite of mine from the "Take me to Tomorrow" album!

That live version is fantastic and so powerful.
Grew up listening to John Denver. As a vet, this is a sad, sad song…

I hope TH-cam gives you credit for replays cause I've listened to this 15 times without leaving the page.
Awesome song! Another good one to check out is the Eagle and the Hawk...

Love that heavy acrostic sound it comes in with.
What a VOICE!!!

Don't forget the legendary drummer Hal Blaine.
Wait Justin, you were paying attention to the lyrics? :-)
Guess you had to be there...
