I guess no one needs layaway anymore with credit cards and all. But yes, I remember it well. I’d accompany my mom to the back of the department store so she could make payments on her layaway purchases. Seems like so long ago, and then it seems like yesterday.

I am just noticing now that the fabulous blue bag is the one the Avon lady brought with her to Joanne Fowler's house. I guess the Avon lady shops for her purses at Stern's. I wonder if she bought it during the winter sale or paid full price. It was early May the day the Avon lady went to see Joanne, so it could be she got the purse during the sale.🤔

Lay away was a big plus for back to school clothes. The store held the merchandise in the back room. This was before everyone had credit cards. You made payments to the store and when paid in full, you got your merchandise.
It sure was big. My mom used lay away all the time. It was certainly a way to avoid unexpected charge balances
