Awesome job. Buddy will never be "replaced" but there are many players trying to move new and old music in different directions. People like Marco keep pushin', nice!
Just toward the end of the solo you start to remember "oh yeah, he's an extreme metal drummer!" And I mean that in the best way, it's great to see such versatility. Keep on swingin' Marco!
None of you would touch a drumstick if this guy was in the same room. Who else out there goes from stuff like Necrophagist (technical death metal) to jazz fusion and big band, and pulls it off this well? Also, his limb-independence is second to none, and he's an ENTERTAINER, not just a drummer. Until you jazz guys can cover Necrophagist (and you tech-death guys successfully sit in with a big band), stop the hate. Indisputably one of the top ten drummers in the world. I'd argue in the top three.
The feel is indeed different than that of Buddy but it's not any worse, just a bit more modern. I think it's pretty cool for a change, giving old songs a new feel just makes it more interesting to listen to because your not hearing the same thing again. Their both good, just different.
@realdrummer110 I don't mind seeing them live at all. I have been a huge fan from an early age. Wherever they play and if i get a chance to see them I shall. Why should they end... They are a great band.... Although them without Portnoy is kind of weird but anyhow best of luck to them. You shouldn't be so biased. There are very few good musicians being able to bring out good music to a wide market. DT is successful at it. So support it. If you don't want to then that's your own view. Cheers.
@JorahDumond He's always been one of my favorite drummers. He still ain't got that swing though, but he's probably getting there (and it's not that I'm saying that I've got it or something ludicrous like that). Other than that: WORSHIP HIM !
Hmmm....Well...., the way I see this, it seems Dream Theater really did their homework in the drum auditions for the replacement to Mike Portnoy. My first choice though was Mike Mangini and next was Virgil Donati. But watching Marco Minnemann play, I think he's one of those "world class drummers" DT was mentioning about. Congrats to this guy then if he's the one. Only one thing I suggest, MM should get a drumkit, I mean a real BIG Drumkit, as in w/ double bass pedals!!
@rbDrum01 Mainly about speed and stamina? Depends on the kind of metal... For instance, early 90's power metal or progressive metal are not that way. Perhaps that's what's mainly needed to play grind core, death metal, and black metal...
First off...Congrats on everyone who has stuck with drumming. Next, there is room for EVERYONE at the top, says Dave Weckl on his early video effort from back in the day. If I want to record a song with a harmonica, a salad mixer, and a garage can I can call it soup salad jazz rock and metal and it would be my right. Free country. Such is life in the Americas. Libertas liberte'. Viva la France!-nuff said-dk
That's so true... Bandleaders back in the day like Les Demerle better because they felt he was more musical and used the toms more....like Marco does now. Buddy actually gets a little dry to watch because he lives mostly on the snare drum. marco does a lot more with double kick and tom work.
mike portnoy does so much more than playin drums, his passion for dt led them to fame, and for a prog rock band thats a huge accomplishment. although i dont like his contributions to the recent album, portnoy should be respected as a drummer. he doesnt compare technically to many drummers, but he does a heck of a good job at what he does. dt should continue because there is still much potential with the other 4, marco would be a solid addition making them less successful commercially, but epic!!
Seeing this video, I understand why Minnemann didn't get chosen to be part of Dream Theater. He's just too "Marco Minnemann" for the band. You can't contain him in the 4 walls of Dream Theater
@realdrummer110 Like I said earlier everyone has their own opinions. I don't think so. I believe Dream Theater have always brought good a ideas and music in all their career. It's an amazing band with phenomenal musicians. You have your opinion I have mine. :) Peace.
@samtotheg bro...im not sure but id bet I know a lot more about bop and jazz in general than you do...I went to berklee in boston and was in an advanced bop ensemble with a couple of seniors my first semester (got my ass handed to me on a silver platter)...so I have an incredible respect for jazz....what I can't stand are people who troll videos claiming to be the be all and end all in the judgement of a musical genre
My opnion is, taht every drummer or other musician is unique. So are the styles too. Buddy is not Marco and vice versa. I am a fan of several drummers and that's because their own styles en skills. Greets from Holland!
@KarateMastR57 Go listen to any of Buddies performances of this and tell me he doesn't smoke Miinnemann; I'll tell you you're either nuts or you just don't have an ear for music. Maybe someone else knocked Marco's performance and you got all pissed. I just saw him play with U.K. a few months ago; great drummer but it just goes to show you how even greater Rich was. Even the band sounds sluggish here and I can hear fuck-ups everywhere. Not with Buddy behind the skins; that band is tighter than...
@manifestgtr so ive been playin listenin to jazz for 11 years but ok, and you consider what marco is doing good its too heavy too brash for jazz, and manifest I think you wanna live in iraq then and rise to power there where u can tell people what not to do on the internet but this is america son , freedom of speech , I cant stand guys defending bullshit jazz and tryin to pass it off as equal to the real thing to each their own.
As a big band drummer, my experience tells me the reason the band misses the cue at 2:21 is Marco's fault. He's of absolutely NO support to the rest of the band! He plays his fills like he's playing to a click trak - not to a big band. These guys need a clear sense of the 1 in order to come in solid. Good drummer he is, big band drumer he is not! Sorry!
The tempo is not right, he does not swing, the phrasing is all over the place. His chops are brilliant, tecnique is flawless but this is not that great. An insular performance. Checkout the Buddy version from '73 right up to '86 and feel the swing. Sorry Marco you are a brilliant drummer but this just does not work
@PUSHMUSICNY When you say "no one gives a flying fuck about big band music" your speaking for yourself and yes the majority of people but then again listen to what the majority of people listen to: shit. The top 40 is the worst music out there. Good music is good music whether it be big band or any other genre. If you feel Minnemann is great then the fact that he can't play this music nearly as good as the great big band drummers should make you repect them more not less. You're closed minded.
yeah this guy was hitting shit and being fast for the sake of it,. his right did keep tempo but the left hand is suppose to comp what either horns or the bass is doing it sounds like hes just hittin shit with his left hand , his comping ability is awful,and hes too loud with the left hand , his solo was technical but it lost me he lacks the finesse and improv skills to play jazz., he shud stick to double bass noise music.
marco is the proof that a drummer can attempt to play any style of music there is but can't be as good in all the genres like the real genre pros.. even if he feels comfortable in all those styles. marco combines a lot which is great. but that solo was pathetic compared to buddy or morello and the REAL big band and jazz drummers. and in death metal? yeah he tried death metal (in necrophagist). = failed. he has no high speed and stamina and the wrong sound and setup for that.new necro drummer has
This is not the buddy rich big band as it says in the title. gotta say it's not the best interpretation from Marco, good rock drummer but not so much for jazz. Bass drum too heavy, sitting behind beat instead of ahead of beat. soloing is better than his band playing, just my experienced opinion though...
amazing how much of an impact buddy did to the drumming world, that even after all these years, we still do this. sounds amazing imo.
Wow! Very impressive performance! Marco is just ACES in so many different ways!
Awesome job. Buddy will never be "replaced" but there are many players trying to move new
and old music in different directions. People like Marco keep pushin', nice!
Just toward the end of the solo you start to remember "oh yeah, he's an extreme metal drummer!" And I mean that in the best way, it's great to see such versatility.
Keep on swingin' Marco!
Love the one handed hi hat solo!! I seen buddy do it at a show in Michigan years ago and I was blown away!! very Nice Marco Rocks!!!
who knew that the act of hitting things with sticks could cause such rage and argument
None of you would touch a drumstick if this guy was in the same room. Who else out there goes from stuff like Necrophagist (technical death metal) to jazz fusion and big band, and pulls it off this well? Until you jazz guys can cover Necrophagist (and you tech-death guys successfully sit in with a big band), stop the hate. Indisputably one of the top ten drummers in the world. I'd argue in the top three.
this is probably one of his best videos, and that is hard to say, Go marco !!
Yes... Yes.. that was insane... omg... marco minnemann is a damn beast.. brutal solo.. man... just great.. amazing video...
One of the best someups I've ever heard!! Totally agree!!!!
This is amazing!! Marco is equally creative as he is versatile!!
great contribution to the drum community. he makes it his own. i think that's a good thing. who want"s to sound just like someone else?
Wow! I really like Marco and this is a great video!
He´s my favorite drummer!
BIG BAND MEEEETAL! :D
Awesome!
Marco is a genius!
Love Marcoooooooooo!!!
That is badass.
Amazing!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hes f@&ing amazing!!!
@manifestgtr That may the best diss on youtube, I nearly died laughing
he plays double stroke rolls like john bonham! he's a genius!
The feel is indeed different than that of Buddy but it's not any worse, just a bit more modern. I think it's pretty cool for a change, giving old songs a new feel just makes it more interesting to listen to because your not hearing the same thing again.

@DeBoltDrumming1
hahahaha...that was funny ....thanks bro for making me laugh....I know where ya got that from...I forget the title tho..
he completely lacks the feel of a true big band cat but he more than makes up for it with sheer ability. bravo!!!!!!!!!!!
@JorahDumond He's always been one of my favorite drummers. He still ain't got that swing though, but he's probably getting there (and it's not that I'm saying that I've got it or something ludicrous like that). Other than that: WORSHIP HIM !
@kigawman he does man. look up other videos of him. big kit and double bass.
@BeyondtheMeasure Yes sources tell me he is Dream Theater's new drummer.
@rbDrum01

i can actually hear paul gilbert screams "TAKE IT AWAY MARCO !!" at -0:05
Yes
That's so true... Bandleaders back in the day like Les Demerle better because they felt he was more musical and used the toms more....like Marco does now. Buddy actually gets a little dry to watch because he lives mostly on the snare drum. marco does a lot more with double kick and tom work.
fuck!!! brutal!!
Fuck yeah.
Wow I never knew he played this concert too truly a great musician maybe the reincarnation of buddy rich? Certainly without the temperament tho xD
what kind of crashes are those?
mike portnoy does so much more than playin drums, his passion for dt led them to fame, and for a prog rock band thats a huge accomplishment. although i dont like his contributions to the recent album, portnoy should be respected as a drummer. he doesnt compare technically to many drummers, but he does a heck of a good job at what he does. dt should continue because there is still much potential with the other 4, marco would be a solid addition making them less successful commercially, but epic!!
@markhitsdrums I understand what you mean about Portnoy, but thanks to the internet, DT is expandind on its own.
Seeing this video, I understand why Minnemann didn't get chosen to be part of Dream Theater. He's just too "Marco Minnemann" for the band. You can't contain him in the 4 walls of Dream Theater
haha his in ears flew out.
1000000000000000000000 like
@realdrummer110
Like I said earlier everyone has their own opinions. I don't think so. I believe Dream Theater have always brought good a ideas and music in all their career. It's an amazing band with phenomenal musicians. You have your opinion I have mine.
:)
Peace.
I hope no one that has ever seen me play has seen this!
1234!
@bajigurwedangronde Haha, I know right?
Not quite Buddy Rich but he's a fine replacement.
i think he killed that splash, ha...
two handed octopus :)
@agadg09 ...That's just his face...
You're fired..
You call that a drum solo? HELL YEAH! I gotta go change my underwear...
Not bad at all! It's not swinging hard, but he gives it a good effort.
@Saugori hes just chuck norris in disguise
@ImmortalSpammer +1
im so sorry neil peart
Sorry,but imho Weckl set the bar high on this. Check out his version. Faster and more secure. He threw the band a few times. Nice crack at it though!
I cant believe this bastard was in death metal bands haha
My opnion is, taht every drummer or other musician is unique. So are the styles too. Buddy is not Marco and vice versa. I am a fan of several drummers and that's because their own styles en skills. Greets from Holland!

all i gotta say is only real men play in what looks like fishing boots
cool marco is amazing...
wait....what's wrong with this video/performance? I see nothing wrong with this, yet people are complaining
I feel sorry for you.
bass is dragging D:
What's with the comparing? Just leave him be, as an awesome drummer who does what he loves to do.
@manifestgtr
so ive been playin listenin to jazz for 11 years but ok, and you consider what marco is doing good its too heavy too brash for jazz, and manifest I think you wanna live in iraq then and rise to power there where u can tell people what not to do on the internet but this is america son , freedom of speech , I cant stand guys defending bullshit jazz and tryin to pass it off as equal to the real thing to each their own.
Yeah, metal is definitely not all about speed and stamina. Naybe some generic mainstream metal
the don't like the idea of MM bigband....
instead of BR bigband.......
Sorry!
that's just not true. look up romain goulon here and you'll change your mind. if not you must be deaf- blind or sth...
IMO, too soft an interpretation for the piece. And too many meaningless fireworks. Check out the Holland Bigband version, much nicer to listen to.
The tempo is not right, he does not swing, the phrasing is all over the place.
His chops are brilliant, tecnique is flawless but this is not that great.
An insular performance. Checkout the Buddy version from '73 right up to '86 and feel the swing. Sorry Marco you are a brilliant drummer but this just does not work
He's a great drummer but watching him swing was painful.

which still makes him the best drummer alive by a mile
