How to check your tire pressure

  • Keeping your vehicle’s tires at the proper pressure is simple, but needs to be checked regularly. With the correct tire pressure, you’ll have better fuel economy, your tires will wear more evenly, and you’ll have better traction and performance on the roads. It makes it well worth the couple minute’s effort to check and adjust the air in your tire.
    1. You’ll need an air pressure gauge and an air compressor. If you don’t have an air compressor, don’t worry. Some AMA centres have free air for members. Or you can stop at most gas stations, but they usually charge for air.
    2. Find the correct pressure for your tires. You can find this on the manufacturer’s sticker inside the driver’s door.
    3. Take the cap off the tire’s valve stem.
    4. Push the gauge onto the valve stem. The little white indicator shows the pressure of your tire.
    5. To add air, push the air compressor nozzle onto the valve stem.
    6. Squeeze the lever. You should hear air going into the tire.
    7. Check often to make sure you don’t overfill your tire.
    8. If your tire has too much air, press down on the pin in the middle of the tire’s valve with the gauge.
    9. Do all four tires, and don’t forget the spare!
    Tip: your front and rear tires might have different recommended pressures.
    Tip: some tires are filled with nitrogen. It’s okay to add air to a nitrogen-filled tire.

    "Now lightly kick the tire, I don't know why but I see people do it." Not sure if this was intended to be funny, but I found this hilarious haha.

    Thank you for this, that was very informative...for reminding me that the correct tyre pressure can be found on the inside of the driver's door... and then showing how to use the gauge and then what to do if you put too much air in.
    Very good video.

    Another very important thing: the pressure rating on the door is for a COLD tire. If you've been on the road for say more than a few kilometers, the pressure will read higher. Make sure to account for this to avoid driving on a underinflated tire which is dangerous!

    Hey AMA, I have a question.
    Where I work we have a few tire gauges and the issue arises when you go to check the tire pressure. The gauges will shoot all of the way out, past 50 psi. This happens every time until you “ baby it “ and very very gently put the gauge up to the stem.
    We might just have cheap gauges but I was just curious if that’s a problem your team experiences and if so what’s the fix? Again we may just have cheap ones.

    My manual tire pressure gauge automatically springs back in after I take it off the tire. Is it faulty or do some do this? I have to read it while still holding it on my tire. My bf said they aren't supposed to do that but I don't know if I got a broken one or not. When using it to fill my tires my tire pressure light then turned off so it must be at least close to accurate. I think.

  • @hotwaffles5897
    @hotwaffles5897 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Whenever I use the gauge it keeps releasing air. The one I got has 2 holes but the 2nd hole I can’t even use cause the stick is going inside the rim and I can’t read the pressure from inside the rim unless I stick my head under the car. Still confused

    • @mmwtcasmalltown
      @mmwtcasmalltown 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You gotta find the sweet spot...usually by applying a little more pressure with the gauge til it stops letting air out. It will always release a little air when first pushing it on the valve but should quickly stop once you apply enough pressure

      @aslanjudah33 I spent $10 on mine:( I needed one cuz my tires go crazy in the fall and spring when Colorado can't decide if it wants to be hot or cold. But now my bf is saying it's faulty cuz the ruler springs back in when I take it off the tire. I just read it while still holding it on the tire. It can't be too off if when I use it to check and put air in my tire pressure light in my car turns off right? I'm so confused 😕

      Sure - if you paid $1.99 for one with a keychain at a convenience store/gas & go!
      Both Milton and NAPA sell car and light truck stick-style gauges for $6-8.99. Keep them in the house, in that extra kitchen drawer with household tools in it, and they'll serve you for a good ten years.
