That sounds expensive. That's only slightly cheaper than just selling a new unit with the upgraded specs. A better idea is a trade in program for a new unit and refurbishing and reselling the old units at a discount. They keep their current player base who wants to upgrade and get additional users on the fence by getting them into the ecosystem. They still be taking a loss on hardware but the software sale would increase exponentially.

@@ritogamo9830 The APUs are nowhere near as powerful as a full standalone GPU. These would appeal to the 'bottom end' of the market, where AMD doesn't have any product currently situated.
This is crazy. It has my computing power than my high end workstation from few years ago. Cool device. I do not think it is really a handheld, but some sparse work can be done on it too. In my opinion the screen resolution and size is a bit too big for hand held.
What I'm really curious about is it it's comfortable playing with the built in controls. This device with the 7840U is really tempting, it's nice having the keyboard for whenever the PC does PC things, I like the bigger screen idea, and plus this has more RAM and faster RAM than most handhelds, which is big for these APUs
These new amd mobile chips are blowing my mind it was only 10 years ago I got my laptop with an amd a10 6700 with a HD8670D igpu and it struggled with everything and now we have handheld systems that can run everything
This is to me, the milestone where igpu begins to takeover. Just upgraded from a 1060 to an rx6600, and still use the 1060, it still ran elden Ring very well. Carrying that performance in 15-40 watts total is just crazy.
Backpedals at the least ought to be standard features for modern day controllers now. They can act as pedals for racing games and to free up and allow simultaneous use of trigger buttons. Back pedals can also act like 'Shift' & 'Ctrl' keys that could increase the functions of all other buttons.
While I know that form factor is a bit controversial against handhelds proper, it’s just so sexy and intriguing as a mini-laptop. Would love to see Witcher 3 Complete Edition running on this thing,
DDR5X at 7500 is absolute must on this APU, fantastic boost in performance 👌 RDNA 3 needs the fastest Ram to get the most out of it, I hope other handhelds use this Ram and 800P screens.
Thanks for the great review. Currently own the WM2 6800u and can't wait to order the refresh. Performance looks fantastic and the form factor is hard to beat.
The specs on this are really strong. A couple of questions as I am not super familiar with these machines: does it have upgradable Ram beyond the 32 GB? Or is the ram soldered on the motherboard? And does it have a headphone jack and or mic input? Just curious, as you could use this as game playing machine. But also as a portable capture device or the games and for podcasting as well.
At this compact size the RAM is almost certainly soldered down. Without replaying the video I believe there was a 3.5mm jack on the back near the right trigger
Thanks for all of the input. Pretty cool that it has headphone and mic jacks as well. Sort of a bummer that the ram is soldered on. But I understand due to size. In the future, these would be awesome if they had user swappable ram…
I've got the 6800u version and its a great little machine. Its my daily driver. I use it for work and play. I'm currently test playing a certain NS game with Ryujinx and it plays quite well on it. It should be even better experience on this 7840u. I'm contemplating whether to sell mine and get the new one but I think the Ally will be better value. Looking forward to the Ally details on May 11.
Ally slower ram, smaller screen, smaller battery, less storage expandability, proprietary egpu connectivity, mind you if I had the 6800u I'd wait till next years version
Hey I have a question, is the "CPU Package Power" the power consumption of the CPU or the whole SoC? İf it's just the CPUs power usage, how much power does the GPU use?
Seeing the performance is getting me more hyped for the ROG ally. Especially since you can lower the resolution to 720p and get more performance. Also the any device using the 6800u can be updated to the 7840u without changing anything on the boards.
I'm excited to order my Ally. So far the only real downside is that they used slower LPDDR5 ram and not the LPDDR5x (7500) ram. At best, we are looking at LPDDR5 6400, and at worst, it will only be at 5600.
@@Tekgnome. No chance that it will be below Lpddr5 6400. Wccftech is claiming as much as lpdd5x at 7500 for the Ally, but the source for that seems to be wishful thinking, i'd say there is a 90% chance it ends up being Lpddr5 6400 (same as what the Aokzoe A1 Pro is). Atleast the Ayaneo 2s is confirmed to be Lpddr5x as it was shown off in task manager in their livestream at that speed.
@@slickrounder6045 We know that the z1 extreme is an FP7/FP7r2 package(we have pictures of the motherboard and the package size and chipset is easy to tell apart from the newer FP8). Also Asus's official specifies that its LPDDR5 and not LPDDR5x. Unless I'm mistaken the maximum offered by FP7 was LPDDR5-6400 but they could be doing some magic to get that magical 7500
@@Tekgnome. There are comments on videocardz explaining why its possible it can be Lpddr5x (i do agree with you that the pictures showed Lpddr5, which is the main reason i think it will be that, I just noted that despite knowing that Wccftech is still spreading that it can be Lpddr5x). Here is the comment from videocardz "ok i got it directly from AMD 'Every AMD Ryzen Z1 Series processor supports USB4 for fast and easy connectivity for the latest external storage and display devices, as well as the latest LPDDR5 and LPDDR5X memory standards, delivering fast performance and low latency for more responsive gaming.' so the z1 extreme does support lpddr5x but that doesn't mean the rog ally has to use it". So that is the case that shows its possible it COULD be Lpddr5x (maybe for a more advanced rumored 3rd configuration of the Ally that may come later at a higher price, probably with more ssd space as well).
Those CPU scores are insane. The Geekbench 6 scores are beating desktop 5800x3d and 5950x? I'm so confused is it really that good or am I missing something?
wow this thing is a beast! so much performance for only 15 watts! it also looks like you can even lower the tdp below 15 watts, i wonder what you would need for some basic web browsing and 1080p youtube, maybe 5-10 watts? i wonder what the battery life on that would look like.
Those chinese companies love to slap higher resolutions screens on top of those things, but what's the point of a 1600p screen for a gaming device if you won't be able to run quite a lot of games at that res, and that will be a considerable drain on the battery, on top of those APUs requiring more juice than the Deck? Unless they have massive batteries to offset the higher power drain, it's like they don't give battery life while playing games concerns much thinking. This isn't a laptop situation where you pretty much need to be plugged to play games, handhelds are supposed to be used unplugged
You should do a side-by-side test with Ryzen 7 6800U at 15W TDP with LPDDR5-6400 and Ryzen 7 7840U with LPDDR5x-7500. You should also try The Phawx's tweaks for Ryzen 7 6800U in some games which revolve around setting a static iGPU clock that is slightly above the average iGPU clock in game at stock settings, in order to force the APU to send more power to the iGPU instead of the CPU to get more performance, because this is a viable method of improving the 6800U's performance. This works best when the game is already at more than 50FPS with the 14-18W TDP and when you need to squeeze out some more performance to go above 60FPS. The reason why it's useful at 14-18W TDP at higher than 30fps is because Radeon 680M is so power efficient at below 1000MHz that raising the clocks will barely increase power consumption and impact the 1% lows . The static iGPU clock for the 6800U can be set in the Universal x86 Tuning Utility app (version 1.0).
This unit is pretty sweet and I'm glad you mentioned that it runs linux - can we get some info if the OCuLink works on a linux ?! Just if you mention it - yes or no - I mean worked out of the gate or needed some configuring - that would be enough :) Thanks and waiting for the test with the external GPU :)
Me personally, I am fine at a base 15w at 800p resolution to get the priority. 1. locked consistent stable ~ 60fps 2. maximize battery use 3. resolution. Would be good to have sets of configurable power profiles. Like if you dock your handheld gaming PC or connect it to a power source it will switch to those settings - 33W, output to 1200P, etc...
This is amazing, finally we have the handhelds that Xbox and playstation denied us for decades . Perhaps technology just wasn't there but now it is , amazing.
I would personally love to see a foldable keyboard portion. Like just leave the controllers and have the actual keybooad fold back so it looks like a small handheld grip with a massive display on top and when you want to close it, unfold it again, and it looks just like the way you open it the first time ready to be close again. That would be ingenious enginnering.
Yes because the Refreshed version (the one shown in the Video) is only in Production right now. Around June you'll find the 7840U version in their Indiegogo page.
As far as an external gpu I'd much rather pair this with the 6700/XT a better card than the 3060 and it would give you better performance within the AMD ecosystem
I have 6750 and I really hope using the Oculink it’s works great. In the past I’ve gotten much better performance over Thunderbolt 3/4 using Nvidia over AMD but this might be different with oculink
*LOVE* that huge 10" thin bezel panel. I hope OneNet will make a OneXPlayer 3 "ultra" option with a 10" screen. Just big enough to be used as a laptop/tablet, but still small enough to be a handheld.
Yeah a form factor like that would be nice. I would like an 11 inch Ryzen tablet. That way it would be able to be used as a handheld and for productivity. Some steam deck users try to replace their laptop with the deck but the screen is simply too small to be used as a laptop replacement, and an external monitor would not be convenient to carry around.
It's amazing how Sony/PlayStation games are now how people showcase PC hardware. Sony really is taking over the industry, while Nintendo coasts, Valve chilling on a island somewhere, and Xbox is looking for a floatation device.
Have you ever considered doing a video on benchmarks at 720/800p 30fps with a little FSR and seeing the power draw in each game. Kind of like an expected battery life benchmark for each game.
Whole this 1200p +noisy fans high TDP thing is wrong.. 2560x1600 means 1280x800 without pixel interpolation.. that is way how to play at 15 TDP.. Who wants handheld with 1 hours battery at 25W TDP.. its nonse. 25W TPD is nice optimal use case, when you sit by electric plug, but its not normal use case..
With this device, gaming on 800p-1200p 25w is normal, because the battery is big enough, it is 67wh. It will give you at least 2 hours of gaming at such high wattage. The question is does it worth it over the Rog Ally? It has 32gb ram, 2TB, 7840u APU, 7500MT/z Ram, many many usb ports.
GPU uplift in no small pert thanks to the faster RAM, the handicap of pretty much all AMD APUs, even the 3400G saw huge gains if you could bump up the RAM while keeping the IMC/IF in 1:1 with RAM 5700G flies with 4600C18 RAM but to go over that you either need to run 2:1, or turn the iGPU off because it starts to become unstable.
OF note, the 5700G CPU can generally run 4800C18, with some golden samples hitting 5000C17 or 4933C16, you could probably get more samples higher, but i dont like upping the voltage on the SOC or core. The best aidoa 64 i've gotten has been 76GB/s with 48.3ns of latency with single rank 16GB kit of samsung bdye Sure i'll run a $80 kit of RAM at 1.6v just to see if i can get it to run, but not on a $200-350 CPU

gong by your other review of the 6800 u looks like gpu is 25% faster but it is the cpu that see the biggest gain at up to 40% boost as you said can only get better from here Zen 5 is going to be killer exciting times for APUs all around.

Would love to get this 7840U as a refreshed steam deck. I just love the ergonomics and mouse pads.
theres definately going to be a better and much more efficient chip by the time the steam deck 2 arrives. I sold my steam deck to get an alive, but you better believe the steam deck 2 will probably blow everything else out of the water now that valve knows theres a good market
imagine the steam deck giving us a motherboard upgrade with this cpu.
Imagine the steamdeck with a keyboard and a more pocketable form factor...
@@thibaldus3 More 'pocketable' and 'keyboard' doesn't fit in.
That would be cool but I couldn’t see that being any cheaper than $300+ and the installation would absolutely not be for the feint of heart.
Imagine Valve not being a shit company lmao
I appreciate you putting in some examples of games running at 800p! Looks to be the go-to resolution if we wanna stretch the battery life!
$1249!?! Definitly a lot more compared to other handhelds.
2 days of work. Not bad
It literally isn't lol
To be fair this is a full on laptop replacement plus a gaming console. But yeah, it's damn expensive.
@@flowerdealer truth but it is 1050$ now

AMAZING! I dreamed of gaming on the go like this and now were here!
I'm still waiting on my retroid flip to be shipped which i preordered in March. I'll put my order in for this and hope it comes before the ryzen 8000 series comes out.
I clicked the video wondering if the device could handle SF VI, thanks for testing the demo already! Also living that eGPU life but I hadn't heard of using anything other than thunderbolt
I want AMD to bring this to the desktop space. Put the 780M graphics onto the desktop Zen 4 processors. And quad-channel? That unleashes the true potential of the iGPUs for sure!
they will be but more than likely coming in with mini pc's
sounds like there will be a good number of different options coming next year including a 40 cu apu next year from whats been leaked
It would make for a Great home server for Plex encoding without taking up an extra PCIE slot.
IF they are coming, it won't be before June.
they won't come, nobody would buy their amd gpus anymore lmao
@@ritogamo9830 The APUs are nowhere near as powerful as a full standalone GPU. These would appeal to the 'bottom end' of the market, where AMD doesn't have any product currently situated.
Excited for the eGPU Video!!!
GPD win4 with ryzen 7000 will be 🔥🔥🔥
I can believe this version is coming out so soon!
This is crazy. It has my computing power than my high end workstation from few years ago. Cool device. I do not think it is really a handheld, but some sparse work can be done on it too. In my opinion the screen resolution and size is a bit too big for hand held.
This thing can do 9 TFLOPS!!!! Now we just need to get this setup pack into a Switch 2 and get the price down to $399. I can dream...
Any chance of a side-by-side emulation comparison of this and the 6800U version? I like to know if it's worth it to upgrade to the 7840U. 👍
at 15w its not an upgrade
Thanks ETA, another great vid! cant wait for the 35w and external gpu test.
You are right. It is quite comfortable and ergonomic. There are even additional grips for it
These new amd mobile chips are blowing my mind it was only 10 years ago I got my laptop with an amd a10 6700 with a HD8670D igpu and it struggled with everything and now we have handheld systems that can run everything
AMD is killing it in the APU market. Nintendo needs to hit them up for their next system!!!
I am in love with this gpd ❤
I'd love to see what this chip is capable when plugged in and no concern for battery life. Also testing it with an egpu is super interesting as well.
wow. crazy apu. Gaming ultrabooks and Handhelds finally becoming exciting space to watch
Man, I’d love to see a how to video on building your own egpu!
Great idea
This is to me, the milestone where igpu begins to takeover. Just upgraded from a 1060 to an rx6600, and still use the 1060, it still ran elden Ring very well. Carrying that performance in 15-40 watts total is just crazy.
@@omotosake I have 4 PCs, I run all of them. I also use 2 laptops.
Jesus, this thing is huge for a portable handheld for gaming. Great performance but not sure how my wrists would hold up after some time.
It is not just for gaming. I'd replace my work laptop with this. Especially with the optional 4g dongle.
8bit do attached is a alternative.
the intro alone blew my mind lol
dang so that beats a 1650? Pretty amazing that on some triple A titles we can get 4+ hours of battery life gaming on battery
Would love to see Witcher 3 Complete Edition running on this thing,
Yes ❤
Live wallpapers are very beautiful.
DDR5X at 7500 is absolute must on this APU, fantastic boost in performance 👌
RDNA 3 needs the fastest Ram to get the most out of it, I hope other handhelds use this Ram and 800P screens.

Thanks for the great review. Currently own the WM2 6800u and can't wait to order the refresh. Performance looks fantastic and the form factor is hard to beat.
Indeed I love it too
The specs on this are really strong.
I have the 6800u it’s soldered, yes headphone & mic jack on back
all the "LPDDR" ram modules are soldered and can't be upgraded
The ally can't be a daily driver for work though
@@victorkreig6089 yeah I want that for gaming only
ill just keep the 6800u and get the ally instead which is more comfortable for handheld gaming....
Ally slower ram, smaller screen, smaller battery, less storage expandability, proprietary egpu connectivity, mind you if I had the 6800u I'd wait till next years version
@@Mrtickleberries yes
Hey I have a question, is the "CPU Package Power" the power consumption of the CPU or the whole SoC? İf it's just the CPUs power usage, how much power does the GPU use?
Cool, at last a mini PC with Ryzen 7x40 and LPDDR5... Awesome
Can't wait to get the delivery of my Framework laptop with a 7840u in a few months time.
Those CPU scores are insane. The Geekbench 6 scores are beating desktop 5800x3d and 5950x? I'm so confused is it really that good or am I missing something?
Memory ram faster ddr5x
wow this thing is a beast! so much performance for only 15 watts! it also looks like you can even lower the tdp below 15 watts, i wonder what you would need for some basic web browsing and 1080p youtube, maybe 5-10 watts? i wonder what the battery life on that would look like.
Entertaining
I guess Chinese texts look nicer on high resolution screen. They can run 3D games at 800p and run web browser and productivity apps at 1600p.
Its a marketing tool I guess
I cant wait to enjoy these devices in the future when the prices goes down.
These things are so insanely cool.. wish i could splurge on desktop parts and handhelds simultaneously. For now have to choose one or the other
This unit is pretty sweet and I'm glad you mentioned that it runs linux - can we get some info if the OCuLink works on a linux ?! Just if you mention it - yes or no - I mean worked out of the gate or needed some configuring - that would be enough :) Thanks and waiting for the test with the external GPU :)
Me personally, I am fine at a base 15w at 800p resolution to get the priority.
1. locked consistent stable ~ 60fps
2. maximize battery use
3. resolution.
Would be good to have sets of configurable power profiles.
Like if you dock your handheld gaming PC or connect it to a power source
it will switch to those settings - 33W, output to 1200P, etc...
damn looking good
picking up a 64gb version
Why? from all I've read 64gb is pointless over 32gb
@@Mrtickleberries doing also some ai stuff
This is amazing, finally we have the handhelds that Xbox and playstation denied us for decades . Perhaps technology just wasn't there but now it is , amazing.
Imagine Zen 5 with RDNA3/3+/4 on desktop at a 125W
I would personally love to see a foldable keyboard portion. Like just leave the controllers and have the actual keybooad fold back so it looks like a small handheld grip with a massive display on top and when you want to close it, unfold it again, and it looks just like the way you open it the first time ready to be close again. That would be ingenious enginnering.

😂😂😂 very funny
Bro it’s better than my desktop 😭
We need modular apu amd ram for these handhelds. These updates coming in too fast.
GPU uplift in no small pert thanks to the faster RAM, the handicap of pretty much all AMD APUs, even the 3400G saw huge gains if you could bump up the RAM while keeping the IMC/IF in 1:1 with RAM
5700G flies with 4600C18 RAM but to go over that you either need to run 2:1, or turn the iGPU off because it starts to become unstable.
OF note, the 5700G CPU can generally run 4800C18, with some golden samples hitting 5000C17 or 4933C16, you could probably get more samples higher, but i dont like upping the voltage on the SOC or core.
The best aidoa 64 i've gotten has been 76GB/s with 48.3ns of latency with single rank 16GB kit of samsung bdye
Sure i'll run a $80 kit of RAM at 1.6v just to see if i can get it to run, but not on a $200-350 CPU
It would be interesting to see how performs better the iGPU from the 7840U: '2GB vs 4GB vs 8GB' (6GB? Is that possible?)
5:53 That tuning menu is slick
You’d be a great guest on “Moore’s law is dead” channel. Love your APU analysis

gong by your other review of the 6800 u looks like gpu is 25% faster but it is the cpu that see the biggest gain at up to 40% boost as you said can only get better from here Zen 5 is going to be killer exciting times for APUs all around.
This is the one I'm waiting for. I'm looking for a handheld for gaming and a work machine for work/learning.

Oculink port is amazing! It can play different roles like laptop, minipc, gamepad, awesome!
Amazing how far PCs have come along. None of this would be possible without the 7nm or less manufacturing technologies of semiconductor devices from companies like TSMC.
