I have played with leather projects since the 70's. I am always glad to find new ideas and projects to try. I am not sure my skill level is up to yours. A CHALLENGE! Thanks for sharing.
I saw someone at a festival use the folding straw mechanism from a modern water bottle and then cut the straw to fit the leather canteen/costrel/leather water bottle to fit then they could just open the sippy straw to drink...I don't like using plastic or PVC for drinking because it has toxins from the plastic that leech into the water but it was a great idea.
@NilsBeardfoot : I saw an article in Make It With Leather several years ago, where the author made a similar bottle to yours. He showed how to use pitch to seal the bottle interior with, as well as the Cautions of handling hot pitch. I never got around to following his instructions and was just wondering if you had. Thanks for an excellent tutorial on making your leather bottles!
I can give you no guranty, but I was worring about the same. The liquid has barly any contact with the leather or glue, because of the thick wax layer inside, only on the opening it can be. I also made a test putting water inside for a day and it did not change the color or tasted any different.
Would be an option too, but it would be more difficult and you can sow on the opening already completely on before sowing the big pieces together. It's just for the handling easier, if you try it out in your way, please let me know how it turns out :)
I use it only with water, definitely no sugar. After use I wash it with water and let it dry completely. So I not really cleaning it, but with only using it with water there is not much to clean, but yes at some point it may need some cleaning after long use and then I may just replay partly the inside wax.
The only part i feel a bit doubtful of is the glue. The flask will be used to drink from i assume, so the toxicity risk of glue feels like a step worth skipping or altering.
You are right, but the same is true for the leather itself. When putting undyed veg tanned leather in water for a while there also will come substances off. This is way you should not save any bees wax, but in enough to be sure everything is well covered up and the water does not touch leather or glue; on the mouthpiece this is not so easy but there most of the time is no water
@Nils Beardfoot Leathercrafter myself, but i only use veg tanned. I have seen bottles being made with no glue however, so perhaps there are alternatives for you craft to skip that part. Just me thinking loud. As for the tip, you could switch that to cork fabric, as well as stitch it as a collar from the inside, instead of out and inwards. Get a good seal that way, and you don't need coloring. Anyways...just thinking out loud, and kudos for a good looking craft bud 👍
@@Grihmmy There are other ways yes, you could just punch the holes on both pieces in advance, but you would have to line it up perfect. I appreciated you thinking out loud, thank you :)
True, but its the same about the leather itself with left over tanning agent which is water solvable. The solution for both is enough wax covering it completely so the liquid inside has no directly contact to leather or contact cement. I was worryed about this as well so I but clear water in each finshed bottle, wayed a day and there was no color change from tanning agent
Of all the leather drinking vessels I've seen on TH-cam, this is one of the better ones that I've seen. Thank you.
Thank you, thats nice of you to say :)
Best leather artist I've seen.
Awe, thank you :)

Glade I can give you a new idea :)
Thank you - this is the first round flask build I've come across.
You're welcome :)
Ok first off, really cool canteen. Thank you for sharing
Thank you and you are welcome:)

Have you ever used pitch to coat the interior with?
Unfortunately I have not, so I can not tell you if and how it works

@@erikhoff5010 unfortunately I have not seen that artical, I could imagine it being use similar but the details beeing different
Is it safe to drink from it after those paint and glue job? Genuinely asking

how much water does it hold.?
About 0,7 l if you fill is completly
Why is the leather strap sewed on the bottom? Why not put that seam at the top with the spout since you are sewing the leather there anyway?

I add pine pitch to my bees wax it seals better
Good to know, thank you for the tip

Relax. Some glues don't just DRY - they CURE. Once this has happened the product is usually impervious to leaching.
@@susanp.collins7834 Is it the case with contact cement though?
Is There A Way I Can Make It Hold 500 Grammes Instead of That?
Yes, in theory you can reduce the the circle size a bit to reduce the volume. Reducing the diameter by 1-2 cm should already be enough
@@NilsBeardfoot ok But I Thought I Needed To Size it Up
@@The_UnderstoodOne nop, at 100% skale it is around 700 ml
