I had a super eye-opening game last night. Was losing a high diamond game pretty damn bad (enemy pushed Junker Town with 2:38 left). I was doing bad, my dps + supp was doing bad, and we all deflected blame. But the person on my team that was doing the worst, one of my dps, instead of being negative, he actually gave my team a motivational speech through VC, sayin that we got this, and that it's possible. I then became way more active in comms, coordinated my dives with him (Ball + Genji) and we pushed all the way in overtime. Then, even when it was 1:00 to 3:38, we full held them and won the next rounds. Y'all, your teammates made it to the rank you're in for a reason. It's all in the coordination and the mental. You *can* win.
I think co tent creators like eskay and spilo have hit a super important niche of educational content that covers the mental side of overwatch. Thank you eskay for encouraging good vibes and generally encouraging the playerbase to be more comlassionate and calm!
Playing on comms in Overwatch is like talking to preschoolers who didnt have lunch and a nap today. You have to be super careful and very positive even when some teammates are throwing.
I used to like comm'ing and leading teams but at some point during I started to think of it as a "crutch". I thought "others climb without it, why should I have to go through the emotional burden of managing my teams emotions" But this video reminded me that comm's, leadership, maintaining positive vibes is a skill and that is important to the game. I wasn't treating that skill set with the respect it. deserves.
Exactly, man! A good high elo player that doesn't have that skill will always be at a disadvantage... (not gonna lie, it's a very high ceilings curve skill, though, lol)
I stopped comming because of the inevitable deluge of slurs the instant things go bad, directed at anyone who dares speak in voice chat. The Overwatch community is so miserable for the most part.
Quick question: how do you deal with the anxiety of talking in voice chat? especially as a woman. while most people will be nice, it only takes 1-2 people out of 50 to make you feel slightly cautious of joining vc.
❤️ I was going to address this in video but decided against it because it’s such a sad topic. The experience you get depends a lot on what game you’re playing and what elo you’re playing in. On my main account in Overwatch it’s rare that I get the sexist annoying bs, but on alt accounts and in other games I get it all the time. In those situations I always wait for someone else to talk first and see how the team vibes are. I can usually tell pretty well just off of how they act for a couple minutes whether or not I should speak and the unfortunate truth is that a lot of the time I shouldn’t. It’s so stupid that it is this way and I hate it!! Regardless even if you wait it out and only talk when you’re comfortable you’ll still get bs every now and then and I’ve cried because of it so many times. But each time it happens you get stronger, and each time you talk and queue again after it you’re winning against those idiots who try to put you down. I guess the answer is just talk as much as your mental can handle it, and there’s nothing wrong with not talking at all. Even in top 100 there are tons of players who don’t speak or even join voice chat. Keep yourself happy!! It’s not worth the mental anguish. But playing in groups and having duos can help a lot too. You can comm with them or just comm with your duo in group voice/discord
I've managed to hit gm without talking, I wonder how much better i could do if I was able to communicate well. I had some friends say that I'm decently good at it. I just feel like I freeze right as I'm about to speak to random people? I guess having a duo would help but I dont have one
@@Eskay_OWWaiting it out is what I do but I’ve found that the sexism doesn’t get to me as much as it used to anymore. Im trying to talk more to help other ladies feel comfortable in vc and you’ve given me the boost I need to start making an effort to comm
@@Eskay_OW I really wish you'd put this in the video to be honest, if I hadn't scrolled down here and opened the comments I would've left thinking you were only pro voice comms. There are so many reasons, especially competitive reasons to not use voice and that did not come through in the video at all. For too many people comms are not safe or accessible or even worth the mental energy (ie not even competitively helpful, rather a hinderance) and I wish more people knew, and were told, and reassured that by someone in T500 who can relate. I personally think the narrative that comms are so important is a load of bullshit and it just makes people - who for very valid reasons can't use them - feel even more anxious and shit. It also wastes so much mental space for you and your team mates unless done well. There's so many cultural considerations to be made too, just let people play. ***If*** people are keen to use voice, then let's talk to *them* about etiquette and effective communication. Comms are like the last 5% to greatness, if you're in T500 or high level scrims that 5% can be everything, heck it's the whole game at that point. For the more than 99% of the player-base though, whether you should or should not be using voice comms is so deeply dependent on a lot of things that these 'how to comm and carry your ranked games' never address :/ I rate the words about vibes at the end though
@@cogginsnuffto me I don't feel like comms are the last 5% I feel like ppl just excel at different in game tools- I hit top200 as a Brig main but my mechanics definitely have much to improve on, I feel like without comms I'd be a low masters player. Obviously I'm hard carried by being male presenting in the sense that noone hears a dude in voice and is creepy or violent towards them, which has given me a lot more practise learning how to com. Hitting top500 without comming is amazing to me, mad props
As someone who feels very uncomfortable and useless comming in games, I really appreciated this video! I've been looking for a good OW comms guide for a while, thank you so much for this!
The first tip actually works well even in other places. I'm temporarily living in Japan and most Japanese players will use the hello macro in game, but if you go out of your way to type "hello", "good morning", or "good evening" in chat, or say it in vc, you find that players are real responsive and will chime back with the same very politely to enthusiastically. Sets a good tone for the game to come.
Keeping comms clear is an issue for me when I'm trying to keep the good vibes up. It's easy for me to automatically say something like "holy shit huge ult" mid-fight. Good to keep in mind for later, but cluttering comms before the reset can discourage people from comming useful info
eskay back with a banger video! something that i always forget to do is refer to yourself as the hero you play! like, as an ana player, i find myself saying “sombra on me”, but they don’t know who “me” is! they’ve only known my voice for three minutes. being in voice at all is super nerve wracking as a girl, so i usually wait to feel out the vibes of the team or a sick play to compliment
Excellent video, applicable not only to Overwatch 2 or gaming, but also IRL communication with any team, if you want to make a positive impact on the experience and outcome. Really well done, Eskay.
before clicking on this video i 100% expected to be a joke consisting of clips from games with absolutely hilariously useless comms, but it turned out to be a super great educational video!! a banger as always from eskay
I expected this to be like sleepy's "these comms will give you 100% winrate" vid where it was just 4 people yelling in chat while one screams "CLEAR COMMS!!" to no avail

Another banger from Eskay ❤ This video was a particularly good one, definitely absorbed some crucial stuff that I really needed to hear…so, thank you for that. ❤️ I’m a qp warrior but I still do a fair amount of comming. I think one of the biggest takeaways I got from this video was the very first tip…just saying hello to my team at the start of the game. Although I’m not afraid to speak over voice chat, I always wonder if I’ll sound like a big dork if I say hi right off the bat…but you’re so right, doing this breaks the ice and will hopefully lead to those who are in vc actually piping up because they know I’m listening and will respond if they have some info/strats to share.
I love watching this sort of stuff. I don't get to play OW as much as I used to, but seeing the game changing decisions like holding rally as orisa gets free picked under bridge is so cool
One of the very few videos I've ever "liked" (don't like clogging up the list of videos I want to revisit). The "get out or die" tip has been immensely helpful just in the few times I've used it since watching this video. Helps people like me that get tunnel visioned too easily realize that the fight is lost.
Every person in your game sounded so friendly and chill. if i joined a lobby plat lobby with "yo yo yo how you doin?" I'd probably get 1-2 "kys" in text chat. I don't even bother with comms unless others start comming cus it's every game in plat that someone is toxic.
i mean i dont think its that that bad, you get some chill people but definitely toxicity exists. I have peaked high gm on tank and sup, barely play dps but could probably reach gm if i really applied myself. I have also played in every role every rank up to diamond on various alts. People will shit talk, i will get flammed for locking the wrong character or not preforming, while literally playing my best character on my best role trying my hardest to win. Just ignore them 90% of the times they have no idea what they are talking about, and even if they do they communicate in such a negative way its not worth your time. Just try to stay positive and encourage your teammates to join vc. It does suck in lower ranks to deal with coms, its hard to get team to ever be positive unless im literally preforming my ass off, so i can imagine what its like if your just having an average or even bad game, the amount of toxicity does suck. Id saying trying to get a premade queue is a good idea, people that can keep a good clean mental, and com a bit. Having bad attitude in your lobby really does impact preformance.
While yes toxic people are super common, going in with the mindset that doing x is useless is also pretty damaging to your own mental before you even start the round. The only way to get better is learning how to deal with/overcome others’ attitudes and being able to preserve your own mental over the possibility of someone else’s being bad.
Was not expecting to come in to this with any knowledge, but I was surprised by the emphasis on maintaining a positive attitude. I’m working my way up from gold and the number of times I have to play mediator and defuse arguments is absurd. No one else seems to get it.
Some tips that should be mentioned for support/healers. Dos. 1. Comms should be used for 2v1 dive kill a healer or attacker on opposing side. Specify which enemy player and location. 2. Support players should stay with other members of team, rather than moving cart, or doing their own thing. 4. Generally stay with your tanks, unless your DP asks you to specifically come and dive a enemy specific. 5. Always stay alive, by using Tanks for shields, or being with 2 other team members. Ask team to ULT to keep you alive if necessary. Don'ts 1. Don't waste time shooting enemy tank by your self. 2. Be healing only one DP player, while leaving tanks and other dp without support, (unless specific clutch dive) 3. Don't be alone. 4. Dual with enemy players even other healers/supports. 5. Don't be in the front of your team (unless body blocking a low team member).
G freaking jeezies guys! That was an awesome last fight. I truly feel like when there's a good vibe it makes for a much better experience win or lose. It always works best when you start the match with a friendly cheerio to your team but also just being respectful helps keep everyone on side. This gave me a good mindset asjustment!
Thank you for this video. Im working on making my team better with coms and this really helps. So far we have cilmbed from gold to plat and keeps climbing 👐. Saying play left or right on a sym wall is so smart❤
It's so embarrassing that a video like this was a must do... I mean, it's a competitive team mode. Being nice and positive to your own team is A MUST. So every time I listen/read a toxic comm, it's absolutely mind boggling.. like, "this kid doesn't know what game mode he selected? Or what game he just launched? ...Or he's here to just throw other people's game on purpose? What's the deal??!" Overwatch needs positive/good vibe interactions with teammates, for it's a team depending game. It's just so obvious - or at least it should...
i play on my switch and don’t have a mic, but i’m still in VC so i can hear call outs and for general comms. and i always thank whomever is giving comms
there's nothing wrong with stating your intentions clearly; if you want to come off as friendly you can either outright say "sorry if i come off wrong, i have troubles managing my tone", or using turns of phrase that can't really be taken off the wrong way like "can we try this for a second? i think i have a plan". In these situations it helps me to visualize this scenario: If i was ready to be angry at my teammate for whatever reason, which way could they tell me something that I would be inclined to listen? What kind of words or phrases would tell me this person is trying to help instead of judging me?
Honest opinion, if you break the ice and say hello at the beginning in a friendly tone, people wont take things personal if you make comms later even if they are agressive. If they do, say "dont take it personal im trying to help us win". At that point, anyone still agressive would have been regardless of your comms, and its a problem with their ego that hopefully gets better as they age:)
I'm in GM2 (and top 250 in ranked Open Queue, though who cares about open queue), and I just want to double down on the fact that just telling your team when they DON'T have to use ults and when they need to give up space to regroup can outright win you more games than any other tip here. In my experience, nothing can hurt your chances more than someone ulting an already lost fight - not only did you lose the fight and lose ground, but now you neutralized the ult econ advantage you would have had coming out of that lost fight. All really great tips though, excellent breakdown that a lot of people can learn from!
Great video. I will say, though, that as someone in the metal ranks, I've found that I tend to rank up more if I'm not in voice. I get tilted very easily (if I'm being flamed or whatever), and play at least a full rank lower. I cut vc out of my life and it's made overwatch a lot more fun for me.
Awesome video! What do I do when I start the game and say hello to everyone to start, and then everyone starts shitting on me because I said hello? Is there anyway to pull the team out of this beginning low morale? Or are those games just gonna be tough or maybe even unwinnable??
Tips on diffusing a situation if someone takes something the wrong way or immediately starts the game toxic and tilted? Sometimes people take even being positive at the start of the game as an attack or something and I want to know how to try and help cool them off so the team can have better synergy

So basically be an extrovert with the mind of shikamaru
Vibes, exactly the reason I don’t join coms anymore. Neutral vibes is better than voice 99% of the time
you're sick with the pen
I'm in GM2 (and top 250 in ranked Open Queue, though who cares about open queue), and I just want to double down on the fact that just telling your team when they DON'T have to use ults and when they need to give up space to regroup can outright win you more games than any other tip here. In my experience, nothing can hurt your chances more than someone ulting an already lost fight - not only did you lose the fight and lose ground, but now you neutralized the ult econ advantage you would have had coming out of that lost fight. All really great tips though, excellent breakdown that a lot of people can learn from!
In the first 1m of the video, it's absolutely hilarious to see Kephrii destroy Jay3 and Oualid as Orisa. Brilliant.
That was a very cool cube wow
I love the stick figures, what a great artist! xD
This is how educational content should be done the unranked to gms are extremely damaging to the already dying ow community
Correct coms are the best and are super helpful
Me in low plat who hasn't heard any comms in months: "hmmmm interesting"
ESKAY VID ESKAY VID and i just queued into lijang on lucio lfg
Someone needs to make a comms guide series. I don’t think anyone besides you has done a video on them, at least not that I know of.
THE DOOM NAMED ROSA PARKS LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Accelerandoooooooo!!!!! (havent heard Lucio say that in weeks lol)
Those close games are the best games
Couldn't agree more.
I always say “____ is one” then they are full healed a split second later
“Meow for nano”
Eskay coming at us with the 5th grade presentation
Awesome video! What do I do when I start the game and say hello to everyone to start, and then everyone starts shitting on me because I said hello? Is there anyway to pull the team out of this beginning low morale? Or are those games just gonna be tough or maybe even unwinnable??
We locked in that game LOL.
top notch game
Tips on diffusing a situation if someone takes something the wrong way or immediately starts the game toxic and tilted?
Sometimes people take even being positive at the start of the game as an attack or something and I want to know how to try and help cool them off so the team can have better synergy
Joke is on you Eskay, I'm too dysphoric about my voice for this to be relevant to me 🥲
rank 1 frog teachers social skills
Nah, Imma do my own thing (I would precede to just moan into my mic as loud as possible the entire time in the next game I played)
ESKAY I LOVE YOU ESKAY
In this video: how to talk to people.... IN REAL LIFE?!?!?!?
Tip one best tip 👍
I'm not doing it wrong and i have never been wrong but this was still a great video 😃
Yo yo yo! It’s a new Eskay video! How ya guys doinnn??
BRO YOU A READING THE SCRIPTS FROM MY BRAINNN
just watch jake go to war in the comms on stream, its so effective
I feel like we need to mention the inverse of this advice, if you can tilt the enemy team by making them argue with each other it's an easy dub.
trouble is there are a lot of games where people dont join vc or dont use it even when they need help these days
wait shes goated
