Loved this video Mikko! You’re right on the money about producing great artwork on cheap things. I first started digital art on my phone, and I’m still impressed by just how capable the IPhone is at producing good art! I also used cheap pencils for years and managed to make very realistic bird portraits. It’s all about your skills, and how you choose to use them 😁
The thing I miss about life drawing classes is that nobody came to ask what lump of charcoal I’m using. Everyone just talked about the art and the art of drawing.
My problem with Procreate Pocket is that I can’t get myself excited about painting with my finger. Hopefully, a good pressure-sensitive and precise stylus will eventually become available for the iPhone.
I exclusively use Procreate Pocket (can’t afford an iPad) and my stylus of choice is the Adonit Jot Pro 4. It takes a bit to get used to, but I’m able to crank out some quality work on it.
can i recommend you the arian pen? i have recently started using it and it works wonders on my iphone11. they claim it works with all mobile devices (including androids) and also iPads!! i hope this would be of help to you as much as it did for me :)
I laughed so hard when you compared it to writers getting asked what keyboard they use because.... YES. ALL THE TIME! :D What kind of keyboard? Really, that one?? What kind of pen, what kind of notebook, at what time do you write, do you drink coffee or tea, what kind of writing software... it never stops and people keep looking at me with wide eyes when I tell them that some parts of the short stories I sold were written on a napkin at a restaurant because both my phone and laptop were out of battery. And then people go on to attribute it to "eccentric creativity" instead of seeing it as just using what was available at the time. My guess is the unhealthy focus on tools is a result of being afraid to start and weird mystifying of creativity, it's endless preparation for a thing that never happens unless you sit down and do the ground work. That being said, Procreate should pay you for recommending their products because I'll download Procreate Pocket and use it next time I don't have my iPad with me! :D Before I upgraded to my new iPad Pro I used Procreate with my fingers on my super old iPad which did not support the Apple Pencil and it was fun. The results were nowhere near as good as your drawing here (honestly, it's amazing what you can do even on a super small screen!) but it was enough to make sure I really wanted to spend the money on a new iPad. It's really all about getting started! :)
Love your comments about iPad size. So many artists I saw have the 12.9 I felt pressure to buy that one. Then, after coming across a few female artists/people with smaller hands, they said that the 11 felt right and was perfect for them. I have very small hands and my reason for buying an iPad was because it is so portable. 3 days in, and I love my 11 inch iPad 😊
I have kind of specific needs because of this channel. Having my hand cover less of the screen makes these videos easier to watch. However that’s a very specific need and should make no difference to anyone who’s not running a channel. (Even then you could just supplement the footage with screen recording anyway)
I just recently found your channel and I'm so glad I did. It's been hard for me to feel creative or inspired during this pandemic and now wildfires (I live in California). But this video right here inspired me to make something today. Like you said, I have all the tools I need to be creative but I just have to enable myself to do so.
You are an awesome human being. I’ve been following you for about a year and your content just keeps getting better and better. Thanks for your encouragement to all budding artists, it really is appreciated. I only wish I could find a class local to me that teaches Procreate. I’m still a little daunted by it.
I just got procreate pocket and it’s super fun! You are absolutely right! When it comes to brushes, tablets, screen sizes it doesn’t matter at all. Also, your piece is soooo beautiful! Best of luck to you!
Not gonna lie i’ve been doubting myself because I don’t have an Ipad or a stylus for my Iphone but what you said at the end really motivated me and I’m gonna get myself together and work on my art for my clothing brand that i’m trying to start up. I used to feel limited to my resources but I have a whole new perspective and I now know that i’m the only one stopping myself. Thank you for the great words man!
You just offered the best reason that Apple should bring support to the iPhone for Apple Pencil. Sure, it would mean changing the screen, if using the same method as the iPad, but they could also use another technology instead. I love the intimacy of Procreate Pocket. It’s a nice sized canvas for illustration.
They kinda painted themselves into a corner when Steve Jobs made fun of phone stylii at the release of the first iPhone :/ I’d love to have a mini Apple Pencil for pocket but there might not be a mass audience for it and without that there’s no way apple will ever do it. Even 3rd party stylus makers are moving away from apple because of the iPad stylus is unbeatable.
Procreate Pocket is a big reason I wish there was Apple Pencil support on iPhone… the iPad Mini is quite tempting as a carry everywhere digital sketchbook because of Pencil support.
Yeah, even wacom pulled their iphone support from their stylus meant for phone and it’s a real hinderance to using the app. Finger painting is fun though. Just recently finished a painting done that way.
Man. Thanks for sharing. Love your work. You are super talented. Not in another lifetime, I could learn to be doing similar artwork as you have illustrated.
This is excellent 👍🏻 I love Procreate Pocket too ☺️ But I read a couple of months ago that Savage is not planning to update Pocket 😟 But if they see this, maybe they’ll change their mind 😄 And I totally agree with you about not needing the newest or the most expensive tools to be an artist. As is said of photography, “It’s not the camera, it’s the photographer”…it’s not the device, it’s the artist 😉
So much truth about creativity! Thanks for your thoughts and advice. It's easy to tell yourself "I'm not a good artist or I can't get better because I don't have access to X" (whatever thing you thing you need). You just need paper and a pencil. Cheers!
Hope you feel better or get to feeling better soon, mikko! I used to draw on post it notes for my coworkers as well- there was a particularly popular one where a wave washed in and took the stick figures head for a ride away in the water.. 🤪 love always from me and my toddler ❤️
Really love your positivity! You always seem to find the silver linings. Wish you had a patreon, membership, or some manner of supporting your YT efforts. You do so much good for so many, and not many younger creatives have the means. 👍
I understand that art educational material is pretty expensive. Now I understand the reason a bit better as I understand the cost of taxes and video production. However it’s a priority for me to keep this channel alive with free content for those who can’t attend my courses. Usually I teach through schools that are closed systems from normal people but I’m looking into creating something that would help people new to art. However that would mean not spending time with clients and as a freelancer every day has different type of value than for those that are in full time jobs. It’s a balancing act but I’m trying to make it work 🤷♂️
angrymikko I understand completely! After twenty years, two thirds as freelancer, time is scarce and valuable. Maybe put another way, I've already found career success in a creative field, and wish I could do what you're doing for the community. But I'll probably never be a teacher or TH-camr 😇 Instead, if I can contribute to people like you who inspire others, even if it's just covering a couple cafe visits per month to help your own inspiration, maybe it's a way I can give back to the community indirectly. Just a thought. Either way…keep up the great work mate!
You are an amazing person. What you are talking about applies to all of us and the lives we live. So positive. You turn all your lemons into lemonade. Thank you for sharing your beliefs and your creativity. Wish you would do one SLOW tutorial for us beginners. I watch you with CC and at the slowest speed :).
I also draw on post it notes at work, but I throw them away, because I'm afraid people will notice how much time I spend on drawing instead of my actual job :S
I’m always asking myself the question why you call yourself angrymikko]... you always bring positivity in you’re video’s. tell me why lol Love you’re vids mate looking forward to the new ones.
Your art is amazing! I just found out about the Procreate Pocket app (I have an iphone 11 Pro, but my ipad is really old and can't support the Procreate app). I have been searching and searching on TH-cam for tutorials on how to use this app - there is so much to learn and I can't find any videos for beginners that are very useful. I am a mixed media artist and would love to better learn how to use the app. Any suggestions on where to learn it? I've been "playing around" with it, but it isn't intuitive to me and am having trouble teaching myself.
I loved this video! I have decided to challenge myself to use procreate pocket as much as possible. I would love to see another video of you painting in the pocket version!
You can see me screen record the app but even with the largest iPhone it’s almost impossible to do overhead footage like in most of my videos. My fat fingers just cover up too much of the screen to see anything.
Such a cute wallpaper :D I wanted to download it, but unfortunately I'm incapable of using twitter and it literally put my language seetings to finnish (I guess, it was a northern language and nothing besides finnish would make sense xD)
@@angrymikko Hahah this is so true. It’s actually amazing how much better my second painting was so I can already see some improvements. I like how you can take a blob and turn it into a masterpiece. I learn a lot from your videos
I've used the new version for a few months now. I wish 3rd party stylus manufacturers hadn't fleed iphone but the new edits to filter menu work better on small screens.
All tools are just tools. I was drawing on post it notes during my school years while washing dishes in a restaurant. If you want to be creative and make something, there’s always a way.
@@angrymikko Exactly. Painters need to paint. Writers need to write. Sometimes I think fretting about the tools is a way to stop themselves because they are afraid they will fail. If they can blame it on not having the right tool, then they haven’t failed or given up. The tools have failed them.
Procreate is better cause we can use pen and big screen but procreate pocket is for iPhone users and procreate is for iPad so there is no choice for iPhone users

Foxxy “Unhealthy” focus is bad, but some things in brushes do matter a lot, so when you can’t find the one you need you start asking.

Hi love your style and videos
Please can U make detailed vid for pocket version
Great video. Sorry if someone has already asked but what stylus do you use on your iPhone?
None anymore just fingers. The stylus manufacturers dropped support for phones.
Can you make pixel brush on procreate pocket?
Very nice video! :)
I want to try this, because i dont have enough money to buy an ipad
Can't afford an iPad right now, but was wondering if the pocket version is good for anything at all :D thank you :)

Question: What about the overall Quality of the image if you would import it outside of Procreate Pocket? Does it downgrade or something like that?
It depends on the file/canvas size. I haven’t experienced a loss of quality.
Hii mikko.. Can i download procreate in Android.. I don't have apple phone
Procreate is exclusive to iOS devices.

so you use your fingers to create the art in procreate pocket?
Yes

It’s designed for phone. Ipad version is for ipad 🤷♂️
