At the tables that ive played at whenever a class has an ability that summons or adds a minion that minion get their own action and bonus action that is separate from the players however in intuitive order they always take their turn with you. honestly that is a homebrew i think should be at every table XD
Or bare minimum they roll their own initiative but get your proficiency modifiers like in BG3. They even get your modifiers on their rolls and AC.
Love your deep dives man, keep ‘em coming
I just allowed large beasts, added "The Call" to magically tame a beast upon a summons, and limited the beasts power level to 1 cr below the character level, so at third level you would get a cr 1 large beast.
Wouldn't that be cr 2 at level3
I don't think you get beastmaster until lvl 4 so I would give a cr 1 to a level 4. Yeah, I think you're right, my math was off.
@@thatguy5737 - cr 2 is too strong at lvl 3. Cr 1 starts at level 4 or even one below like cr 1/2
@@astraghost774 You get beastmaster at level 3. It's part of the sub class.
@@thatguy5737 Yeah, I did 1/2 at 3, cr 1 at lvl 4
My group dropped the Ranger's Companion rule out entirely and houseruled in the Hunter's Bond animal companion rules from Pathfinder instead. We still use it now, even after the Tasha's Cauldron update.
I house rule that a primal companion needs one bonus action to attack, but unless the pc wants that beast to do something else, the beast will continue to attack. We’ll see how it plays
This makes the most sense. Like why would they stop after 6 seconda and just sit there and wait for you to tell them to continue again?
I get what you mean, but the primal companion only needs a bonus action from levels 3 and 4. Once you get Extra Attack, you can use one of your attacks with your action to command it to attack, so you can free up your BA for some Spellcasting or Cunning Action
Im gonna be doing a beast master ranger/ battlemaster fighter as I can combine my fighter manoeuvers with my primal companion
Love the videos! I was wondering, where do you get you dnd B-roll videos and images? I see lots of official dnd photos and other things, and have been wanting to add similar things to my videos. Thanks for the great content (:
I love your videos. Thanks!
Good video with some great things to think about.
As another has mentioned, you have a choice of using a BA or an attack during your Attack action. What's fun at 17th level, with Swift Quiver, you can make 2 BA attacks, have your companion make 2 attacks as part of 1 attack in you Attack action and then you make a 3rd attack with your 2nd attack of your Attack action for 5 attacks.
Also, you didn't mention what I feel is the best part of the Beast Master - it's the only class with a companion where the companion moves on your turn, not after. It reflects how much more fluid you and your companion are compared to a Battle Smith or Drakewarden.
Love your video. Can't wait for drakewarden next~
Drakewarden is next!
@enterthedungeon looking forward to see videos
When using footage of fantasy shows as examples of what the Beastmaster looks like visually, it's a missed opportunity that the author of this video did not use any footage from the movie 'The Beastmaster'... aka, the greatest movie ever about a Beastmaster Ranger.
Sadly I've never heard of this movie lol

I think you can watch the movie on TH-cam. It isn't the best quality, but it should suffice if you are curious about seeing it.
Love the videos, btw.
Whoa. it’s a sword and sorcery flick from the 80s. It gained cult status for the gaudy awesomeness. It feels like a Beastmaster in the Dark Sun setting if you know old school dnd.
What about Druid shepherd
I prefer Ranger's Companion over Primal Companion.
Ok Enter the Dungeon Hear me out.
3 lvl dip in Rogue, Thief archetype, 2 bonus actions.
Just sayin!!!!
