    At the tables that ive played at whenever a class has an ability that summons or adds a minion that minion get their own action and bonus action that is separate from the players however in intuitive order they always take their turn with you. honestly that is a homebrew i think should be at every table XD

      Or bare minimum they roll their own initiative but get your proficiency modifiers like in BG3. They even get your modifiers on their rolls and AC.

    I just allowed large beasts, added "The Call" to magically tame a beast upon a summons, and limited the beasts power level to 1 cr below the character level, so at third level you would get a cr 1 large beast.

      I don't think you get beastmaster until lvl 4 so I would give a cr 1 to a level 4. Yeah, I think you're right, my math was off.

    I'm fairly new to D.N.D role-playing, and with my DM's help, I think we came up with an awesome character ~ Simian > beast-master > Ranger, & I'm really starting to enjoy it alot He's a fast climber in environments with trees/mountain ranges; extremely nimble in tight quarter battles with his high dexterity; and has an ~ Owl-bear as his animal companion that imprinted on him when a favored enemy killed his mom as a cub. I've enjoyed expanding this character as far as I have, and our small group is only at level 3 thus far!! This video has helped me grasp a few difficult concepts, so I wanted to leave this comment as a way of thanking you for this & other comprehensive guides I've taken inspiration/information from!

    My group dropped the Ranger's Companion rule out entirely and houseruled in the Hunter's Bond animal companion rules from Pathfinder instead. We still use it now, even after the Tasha's Cauldron update.

    I house rule that a primal companion needs one bonus action to attack, but unless the pc wants that beast to do something else, the beast will continue to attack. We’ll see how it plays

    • @TrixyTrixter
      @TrixyTrixter 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      This makes the most sense. Like why would they stop after 6 seconda and just sit there and wait for you to tell them to continue again?

    I get what you mean, but the primal companion only needs a bonus action from levels 3 and 4. Once you get Extra Attack, you can use one of your attacks with your action to command it to attack, so you can free up your BA for some Spellcasting or Cunning Action

  • @alorenho
    @alorenho 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    As another has mentioned, you have a choice of using a BA or an attack during your Attack action. What's fun at 17th level, with Swift Quiver, you can make 2 BA attacks, have your companion make 2 attacks as part of 1 attack in you Attack action and then you make a 3rd attack with your 2nd attack of your Attack action for 5 attacks.
    Also, you didn't mention what I feel is the best part of the Beast Master - it's the only class with a companion where the companion moves on your turn, not after. It reflects how much more fluid you and your companion are compared to a Battle Smith or Drakewarden.

    I made a goblin BM with a warg and a phasw spider as companions.
    The Goblin has no magic at all.
    His companions simply follow him cuz they want to. No magic bond of any kind.
    Blinkq is used for Phase Spider phasing ability.
    Let me know what i should add.

    I'm sorry if I missed something but I'm checking both Tasha's cauldron and the PHB and I don't see where it says that you get no spells as beast master. I thought you got your spells starting from lvl 2

    When using footage of fantasy shows as examples of what the Beastmaster looks like visually, it's a missed opportunity that the author of this video did not use any footage from the movie 'The Beastmaster'... aka, the greatest movie ever about a Beastmaster Ranger.

      Whoa. it’s a sword and sorcery flick from the 80s. It gained cult status for the gaudy awesomeness. It feels like a Beastmaster in the Dark Sun setting if you know old school dnd.

    Would it be too overpowered to have the beast only need a bonus action command to do something, then keep doing it without needing a bonus action command till its finished? Like attack, it keeps attacking until that foe is down, or you order it to run away or attack something else with another bonus action? How it is implemented just seems brain dead, it at least has animal level intelligence, an animal isn't just going to stand there in combat and only attack back if its told to every 6 seconds. Look at police dogs, or hunting hawks. Also why not give it some free spells to do with animals, like Speak with animals, and Buff Spells like Aid, barkskin, longstrider, Having buff spells you cast on yourself also effect the beast at 7th level would be great and not OP. Drake Ranger is just so much better in everyway.
