This has been soooo helpful. You made all my fears disappear and made this so easy to follow. I can’t wait to follow you on other things. I will be one of your ever so faithful followers. Again thank you!! Wilma Hansen
So I have just finished my first vent following your tutorial and it came out PERFECTLY! Thank you so much for this video and your detailed instructions, it sewed up like a dream ❤
So appreciate this video, I now see what I was doing wrong. I am in the process of making skirts and had to resort to the simpler slit as I couldn't understand why I wasn't getting it right as you have just demonstrated. thanks again!
I must say thank you very much for this tutorial... been a while I been wanting to know how to do this. Going thru youtube I found you and then this vid and nowi can say you save a future designer time and talent. Bless your heart
I am a professional seamstress, but it has been years since I needed to alter and restore the kick pleat. Your video was perfect for a beginner or as a refresher!! Thank you so much!!!
Thank you! My pattern instructions made this look so difficult and I was at a loss (first skirt vent). But thanks to you I can do it now. Great instructions!
Thanks so much for this. You are so thourough with your instructions. You made it so simple to understand. I have just completed one skirt and on to the next thanks to you!
Thanks for the video, easy to follow and clear instructions! It was a refresher for me, as I have done the kick pleat a few times many years ago...however, I learned something new... to do a curve when cutting it out, instead of right angles. This may seem a simple thing to many, but to me it makes a whole lot of sense to do it....so thank you again, for the video. xoxo
Yes you could. For a similar to this, just make an exact duplicate out of your lining fabric. Both layers would get basted at the waistline, right before you put in the waistband. Do the vent extension for both layers separately but I always tack or slipstitch the lining slit to the main slit to keep them together.
thank you, thank you, thank you. I was a little stuck following my pattern. and you explained it very well, and right to the point. I really enjoy your videos. :-)
I bought a magazine with patterns and it seemed impossible to do. I almost gave up until I saw your video. You saved me. It looked so complicate but now it's so easy. Thank you for sharing
Eunice N. I've only watched your video twice and have a great desire to get my fabrics and supplies... My next step is to make a lovely dress. You are a great teacher!
What an excellent tutorial! I am inspired to make my tutorials on embroidery software better. Not only did you explain everything so well and eloquent but your editing and camera work was the bomb. I am subscribing and recommending.
I'm learning to sew and making a pencil skirt. I was confused about that vent extension in the pattern instructions. Thanks to your tutorial, I understand it now. Thanks a lot :-)
Hi, Thank you very much. I was looking for this and your clear and systematic video was so helpful to me for stitching my grand daughter's dress. How much distance should be taken from back neck of a dress and starting of invisible zipper. Is there any tutorial for cutting pattern of the overlapping sleeve of the dress. thanks once again.
is the kickpleat a different length currently? When I made my skirt, I made it the same hem length, otherwise, I think it might look odd. check our channel for the kickpleat tutorial, because I do go over hemming as it's a bit different.
I love your tutorials!!! I do have a question though. My friend asked me to hem a skirt with a kick pleat and she wants the kick pleat to be the same length. Is that a possibility considering the pattern?
Do you want the bag lining to have an actual opening or do you just want it to expand? If you're just looking for expanding maybe try a simple kickpleat style instead (releasing on tuesday. shhhhh) :)
Hi,I really love your tutorials as they are so easy to understand, but I wanted to ask,if you're lining a pencil skirt with a kick pleat, how do you go about it?It always confuses me when it comes to attaching the lining to the vent area..or do you have a tutorial of how to attach lining to a skirt? It would really be nice..thanks
I want to thank you also for such a clear instructional video for making the kick pleat - THANK YOU! I want to adapt it to my skirt pattern. Can you tell me how wide your kick pleat is? Or how far out do I go from my center back seam line?
Hi! Great tutorial, thank you very much for creating it; forgot loads since school. It seems like sewing a piece with lining would be a different story, how would one go about sewing lining to a vent? Thank you again!
CAL Pittman I would create a lining exactly like the outter shell. They'll get basted together at the waistline before putting on the waistband. I would make the lining slit and hemline just a little shorter/smaller than the outter shell at these points. When the outter shell hemline is finished, you can hand tack these two elements together. Hope this helps :)
Is there a way of creating a slit in a pencil skirt that you already pieced together? I tried to draft a pencil skirt and it's too narrow on the bottom!
Sure, the easiest way is to undo one of your seams, either the center back seam or one of your side seams. Just undo however long you want your slit to be. I would put a few tacking stitches though to keep your seam on the inside of the skirt.
so it is how to make your own pattern when you get the premium but I'm only a beginner I have never made a pattern would this be something that I could actually do as a beginner?
It's $5 monthly but there's no contract so you can pay for one month or several months. If you start with something like a basic skirt, it's not as hard as you think, but I recommend having a few commercial patterns under your belt before attempting it. When you're ready, come check it out :)
The issue is that if you just cut your skirt, you're not going to have that extra panel of fabric to turn to the inside so that the skirt looks finished. I recommend that you make this alteration to your pattern before cutting your fabric out.
hi professor pincushion, i would like to ask you a qn about collars. i have had a measurement chart for collar where it states : collar length÷6 +0.5 = horizontal. what may this horizontal mean?
Our $5/month premium membership is all inclusive and if there's a pattern associated with the tutorial, it doesn't cost anything extra. For our premium skirt tutorials, like basic skirt or pencil skirt, there are no pattern downloads. Instead these are pattern drafting tutorials, showing you how to create your own pattern based on your measurements.
you need to do it to the pattern before the cutting out your fabric. At the bottom of the center back seam, you can add that extra extension by 2" and I normally go up the skirt by about 8". If you want to actually see me draft it, you can check out our premium tutorial for pencil skirt pattern but it's only available on our site and you have to sign up for premium.
Thought I was back in the 50's looking at that skirt and stockings. Very smart
Thank you for this tutorial👏🏾I have been struggling for weeks to finish my client’s skirt, now I’m done ❤

MsAlicia03 thanks for the suggestion. I'll add it to my list

when drafting my pattern, I go out about 2". the length of the slit can really be whatever you decide. For something like this, it might be 8" or so.
if you don't want to put a lining in, how do you finish the rest of the seams?
i love this video, because I had no idea how to sew a back slit on my skirt. i love this video thank you.
is it possible to do a bag lining with a vent like that?
Hi! Great tutorial, thank you very much for creating it; forgot loads since school. It seems like sewing a piece with lining would be a different story, how would one go about sewing lining to a vent? Thank you again!

Is there a way of creating a slit in a pencil skirt that you already pieced together? I tried to draft a pencil skirt and it's too narrow on the bottom!
Where do I see the final product? ...thanks!
May I know this fabric type?.I like your channel.
Do you have a video on how to do this with a lined skirt?
not yet but I'll definitely add it to my list :)
Sure, the easiest way is to undo one of your seams, either the center back seam or one of your side seams. Just undo however long you want your slit to be. I would put a few tacking stitches though to keep your seam on the inside of the skirt.
This was great.. I love this material as well... What is this material?
+Crystal Codrington I think it's just apparel broadcloth
Good
I just got a skirt and it comes with an x stitch in the Bach am i sup poised to undo it or leave it as it is
I think you should cut it to let walking pleat open.
so it is how to make your own pattern when you get the premium but I'm only a beginner I have never made a pattern would this be something that I could actually do as a beginner?
It's $5 monthly but there's no contract so you can pay for one month or several months. If you start with something like a basic skirt, it's not as hard as you think, but I recommend having a few commercial patterns under your belt before attempting it. When you're ready, come check it out :)
is the membership per month or yearly?
Very thorough tutorial! Is it completely necessary to baste the two pieces together? Or can a more experienced seamstress skip that step?
You can skip it if you're feeling confident.
@@ProfessorPincushion awesome, thanks for your reply! You made this incredibly simple.
Can I add a kick pleat to a skirt that is already finished?
The issue is that if you just cut your skirt, you're not going to have that extra panel of fabric to turn to the inside so that the skirt looks finished. I recommend that you make this alteration to your pattern before cutting your fabric out.
What if you want to avoid stitching down the vent 1/4" edge and the stitching showing on the right side of the fabric??
if you do a small hand stitches, they tend to be less noticeable than machine stitches.
hi professor pincushion, i would like to ask you a qn about collars. i have had a measurement chart for collar where it states : collar length÷6 +0.5 = horizontal. what may this horizontal mean?
maybe they mean the width of the collar?
if I get your premium is the pattern for the skirt free or at a fee for the pattern?
Our $5/month premium membership is all inclusive and if there's a pattern associated with the tutorial, it doesn't cost anything extra. For our premium skirt tutorials, like basic skirt or pencil skirt, there are no pattern downloads. Instead these are pattern drafting tutorials, showing you how to create your own pattern based on your measurements.
Pls how do you cut the back of the skirt to make allowance for vent extension and dart?
you need to do it to the pattern before the cutting out your fabric. At the bottom of the center back seam, you can add that extra extension by 2" and I normally go up the skirt by about 8". If you want to actually see me draft it, you can check out our premium tutorial for pencil skirt pattern but it's only available on our site and you have to sign up for premium.
Professor Pincushion
Thank you for responding
How is this type of vent lined?
I did a skirt lining with a vent here: th-cam.com/video/sfSeW9n5YNc/w-d-xo.html
Thank you! :)
can you please sent me the video because i could hear you clear
