    I love the style of these videos, I never had or seen a vhs(due to the time I was born in) but this feels very nostalgic

    This was making the rounds of anime club meetings in the early 90s, and then into con video rooms. It is a laugh riot even if half the jokes are ouns that require context nobody had. It's still funny even if you don't get ALL the gags. Pretty good work for a comedy.

    Nothing to kick off a comedy anime review like a random uncut clip of Devilman crushing a head in his hand

    I might show it to an indian pupil from private tuition and ask him what he thinks of Santin. Depictions of such characters in anime seem to me quite rare, so rare that I never thought about it before.

    I'm not big on comedy anime but this one just looks golden! And you actually mentioned Isabelle of Paris! Why did I even watch that lol. A very fragmented show that doesn't give the main protagonist much to do and shares the spotlight between too many characters, but they have Karlov! A Frankenstein of sorts a la Boris Karloff! Man that was silly. Not nearly as silly as this one tho, thanks for bringing this to my attention!

    I just wanted to say how much I enjoy you and your videos. I am a kid of the 80s and this is so great to see reviews on anime I remember so fondly. I have been binge watching your channel just love what you do.

    I vaguely recall being aware of this one during the 90s, but had no idea it looked so good. If ever there was a title in desperate need of Discotek swooping in with a licence rescue, this would be it.

    You've seen the brief clip of an anime Varan (not Godzilla, sorry), now know the rest of the story! Joke aside, this video is most appreciated as all obscure comedies (especially the ones that are actually funny) need more love.

    Something I didn't learn until later; Ultimate Teacher OVA is based on a manga. And it's quite fateful to it, covering the first volume almost beat to beat.

    There are a few copies of the DVD out there (ADV failed while they were in final testing), but they wanted 200 bucks for it. Which is a little more than I can justify spending on a quickee OVA.
    You could have finished "Isabelle of Paris is.." With "..trying VERY hard to be Rose of Versailles."
    Considering this was a Shonen Sunday property (Adachi and Takahashi's home book), several of the characters having a certain Urusei Yatsura vibe isn't very surprising, nor the "clean look". However the baseball players look like they are a dig at "Bats and Terry" who ran in Shonen Jump at the same time this was coming out (and whose movie is mostly noted for being the double-feature with the Dirty Pair Movie).
    This is one of those shows that I am sure Ben Dunn saw that helped build Ninja High School.
    One of the last of the Patlabor OVAs (Girl from the Stars) also parodied/homaged Ultra Seven. In fact the climax is almost shot-to shot, down to being animated like a Tokusatsu fight.

    I can’t help but think of Kentucky Fried Movie: stupid as hell and us loving it. What impresses me is giving their best effort in animation. Just thinking of the effort exhausts me. As far as stereotypes, we all have a crack coming to us no matter what we are.

    I really like your videos! Would you mind putting the year the anime came out in the title of the video? It'd make your channel easier to navigate. Keep up the good work man! :)

    I have the opening theme. On a vinyl 45 bought in Osaka. (The closing theme, Kakurenbo, is the B side.) Niche within niche within niche. And I’ve got the old, old fansub with a translation that’s mostly made up (and even funnier than the legit one). I think it was originally recorded off of “Ben Dunn”’s community access anime show.

    17:15 Given that the pink haired girl's name is "Baradagi", and the fact that the black and white giant monster sequence is an almost 1 to 1 anime adaptation of a scene from the movie Daikaiju Varan (not Godzilla), I'd say that Baradagi's namesake is actually a direct reference to the monster Varan as he is referred to as "Baradagi" by the natives that believe him to be their malevolent god. I haven't seen this anime at all before so I don't know the actual dialogue that segues into the Varan anime sequence but given the context I've seen here, that would be my guess. Baradagi is for some reason, a reference to the 1957 movie Daikaiju Varan.

    • @DantheManIamIam

      Given that Varan was a movie that was buried by the likes of Rodan and Mothra coming out at the same time and the monster only ever appeared again in blink-and-you'll-miss-him fashion, I wonder if the obscurity was the joke there?

    what could have probably been less confusing for that ending gag between the cyborg characters was if the scientist swapped their bodies instead of giving them a sex change, the setup is perfect for it and would have probably had a better chance of hitting the mark of it being funny even if it might still be out of nowhere

    I think the reason aninated comedies rely more on voice acting and delivery to focus on mundane situations and life. This means less parodying action/adventure stuff and more the real problems real people face. Even stuff like Archer and the Venture Bros. tends to show the mundanity of fantastic situations. I think the humor of the mundane makes it so energetic, chaotic, fight driven animation isn't required as the humor is derived from what is said and less about what visual imagery is being conveyed through animation. There are exceptions but it seems most humor is derived from mundane situations.

    • @leroypreston2973
      @leroypreston2973 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the only time such stuff would use fantastical animation would be when satirizing looney tunes/other works or fantasy sequences.

    • @leroypreston2973
      @leroypreston2973 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plus I think looking at modern stuff, it's kind of hard to think about how to mix fantastic/zany elements with modern day writing.

    • @leroypreston2973
      @leroypreston2973 ปีที่แล้ว

      Especially with adult animation, of what kinds of visual gags you can come up with that aren't sex/grossout jokes or how to make such jokes smarter and be actually funny. Humor is complicated and doing visual gags too can be hard. Figuring out what can work in a smarter adult series is equally tricky. I think verbal humor works as it doesn't rely on creating zany imagery. I know it betrays the idea of animation being visual, but it may be this way unless a new type of humor can be figured out that uses visual gags.

    I saw the 'Littles' episode that Studio Gallop worked on, and it looked pretty good. Too bad Gallop didn't continue to work with DIC on the second seasons of 'Inspector Gadget', and 'Heathcliff' because they didn't look nearly as good.
