as someone who is born & raised here in East LA, it hurts to see my largely mexican/ immigrant community disappear over time due to gentrification. families with generational homes are being displaced and those lots are now turning into expensive apartments for transplants who come here with misguided dreams. it hurts when i see people who solely come here to be an influencer just take up space in small communities and fail to acknowledge the natives and the culture. to them it’s just a background location to fuck around.

Im on the east coast dealing with the same thing and feel your pain. I watched a neighbor unfortunately lose her home and nearly my entire block has pretty much seen the same trend. Things are becoming pricier as well but the biggest slap in the face is the improvements folks been asking for years to have done happening now.
My family is from the south on a costal area home to many generations are being put up with condos and mansions. And now I hear puerto rico is getting the same treatment

it's crazy, same here in Denver too! It seems like every major city is just openly trying to displace its immigrant neighborhoods and turn them into techie hubs.....and somehow every city seems to be pulling it off. It just seems like it was part of a nefarious plan. I hate it, and I hate the pretentious techies that move in.

Yeah I mean can’t blame the people for wanting a place to stay and to follow their dreams. Blame the LANDLORDS and the government!!! Don’t blame the people. The majority of Gentrification might be done by a certain group, but that doesn’t change the fact that there are Mexicans that could displace Mexicans as well.

My main issue is that when these people leave LA they immediately trash it and call it “fake” while only hanging out with other influencers and not doing any fun activities that city has. It’s really hurtful to those born and raised in the city and transplants who actually enjoy living there. All of these influencers moving to NYC won’t change anything, especially if they continue to hang around other influencers. If anything, I get the sense that many of them will leave NYC way faster than they left LA because of the rats, extremely high cost of living, and realizing that so many other influencers are in NYC as well so their videos will no longer be able to stand out or will become flat.

I'm gonna call it now, the next hub will be European countries. I don't know which country/countries exactly (i can see France, the UK, or Italy?), but the next influencer hub will be the move outside of the US into Europe. Influencers are always looking for new ways to romanticize their videos/lives, and once one place is tired out and someone goes big in a certain location, they also go there or model their videos as if they are also in that location.

I feel like Paris is already romanticized by everyone around the world but especially Americans. The problem is that London and Paris are both very expensive since their local currencies (Euro and Pound) are much higher than the US dollar. An influencer that’s up and coming cannot afford to live in Paris or you’ll need a job on the side

@@Snoopdoggrocks I agree and see your point completely but at the same time I’m kinda like “ehhhh” that’s why I said France and not Paris to be honest. More people are now starting to focus on the country side of France because of cottage core aesthetic and the rise of people no longer wanting to work/ they want to enjoy the fruits of their labor. They might even decide to live close enough to Paris to where they could visit for quick trips.
I don’t really put anything past influencers. It may be expensive, but I could see some renting places for like 7-9 months to “refresh” or “find themselves”. I think videos placed in those locations from American vloggers will gather lots of views but for a shorter amount of time because it wouldn’t be genuine. But I did like your input!

A lot of the places these influencers show are less diverse, affluent, areas of the city that aren't even accessible to a lot of people that watch. Taking ubers everywhere and eating out everyday. I feel bad for the younger viewers that move to NYC as working class people that cannot realistically afford to do this. They experience a completely different NYC where they actually have to learn to be street smart, take the subway etc. I've seen it happen too often, where people come here and become disillusioned because they have to work 2-3 jobs to afford rent, and aren't able to club every weekend. This topic about NY kinda reminds me of Seoul to an extent. After I got into Korean culture and Idol music whilst it became widely popular the last couple of years, youtube recommended me so many influencers, mostly western and English-speaking, who lived in Seoul. A lot of their videos were mostly about wandering around the city with "Seoul" in their title, apartment hunting or talked a lot about popular culture there since k-pop got sooo much more attention at the time. And it was great content to capitalise and grow off of!
But nowadays the few influencers I follow who live there have kind of grown out of the "attention-seeking" titles and content for the most part. Instead they show their everyday life and interests while Seoul and South Korea are just the environment around them. For instance I love how Sissel Boe now focuses on self-help, calmness and makes content she loves while Seoul is just the environment she's in. Unfortunately the titles help bc she did have an apartment hunting video last year with Seoul in the title and it got so many views while her amazing calming vlogs without the city-title have much less...

ive discussed this with my friends and time n time again I've wanted to speak on this. Lots of influencers and influencer striving people call LA "fake" and more recently have talked abt a "dark energy" however as someone who is from LA and has since had to leave bc of gentrification I know this is simply not the case if you go east of the financial district and spend time with the actual communities as opposed to attending influencer parties where no one really talks to each other outside of content creation and collaborations. most of these people doing even talk to their neighbors or know what they look like. Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley seem to be the next place with everyone coming into this new age spirituality and recognizing the magick held within the desert, sadly once again people like me will continue to be gentrified out of their homes.

I have family in Calexico Ca and the prices have went up there as well. These influencers seem to not comprehend at times how out of touch some things are when they make statements of dark energy in LA. Some people are drawn to different things but it’s the disappointment they aren’t willing to admit. They forget the reason why movies make places like Hollywood look amazing has a lot more to do with the characters the same way in reality what makes me fond of certain places is the people they interact with. Community is one unaddressed thing so if their values don’t align that’s why they feel lonely. Again, I will watch some of these influencer videos randomly but I just have to remind myself that it’s just a Pinterest video version and doesn’t always capture the reality of things. They are just editing to make their life be romanticized which there is nothing wrong with. But they have to understand just because your job allows you to make your life appear as a bubble doesn’t mean real life can translate the same way. Not everything is about waiting for things to happen to you.

I think there's also been a "de-glammorization" of LA as well. California now is increasing becoming associated with homelessness, and a gist of the inequality of America. About 70% of the homeless in LA have only been homeless for less than one or two years, so it's an exponentially growing problem. NYC isn't the only new "it" spot, but Austin as well. From the wildfires, the growing crime, the migrant crisis, and the homelessness, LA's no longer the city of angles it was 10 years ago. The image and reality of its no longer the place it was in those Kid Ink music videos way back when which drew so many people, and that doesn't sit well with influencers bougie image

As a California native I feel people who dislike here because of homelessness have difficulty with the idea that the world is not perfect and that the issues they wish to ignore can’t just go away just because you voted a certain way. Homelessness doesn’t go away until you adresss and fix the issue which is a big issue full of different layers. I know it upsets people because it makes them uncomfortable. I’ve seen the effects of homelessness trickle down to the I.E and I hope things can get fixed but I know things take time. Less than 5% of people of color that I’ve seen since working in Manhattan from the Bronx since about 2015 live in the central region of Manhattan, living in more of the pricer homes/apartments, where the flip side of about 95% are in the Products of Harlem, near Hurston Yards, the LES, etc. it’s very unfortunate. Going to events, restaurants, bars, shows, shops, parks etc all the time is common, and since a subway swipe costing less than $3 can get you places as distinct as Coney Island, Flushing, and MoMA, it's easy to have new experiences frequently.

I'm gonna take my previous comment back, I don't think NYC will ever be seen as "cheugy" but I think influencers will eventually find another hub years down the line. But i think that's normal with any industry, NY for finance, SF for tech, etc.

  • @shanisokay

I'm from Long Island and now live in the city and I do think the "concerns" over influencers romanticizing New York are overblown. I feel like no matter how many movies or shows take place in the city, it's still always held a pretty strong reputation as a tough city to make it in. In my experience, everyone leaves New York eventually, even natives. So this idea that influencers are going to swarm en masse and take over is just laughable to me. Give them five years of dealing with roaches, a guy shitting on the subway in front of them, sitting in a tunnel for over an hour with no confirmation as to why your train has stopped moving, and just the general annoyances of the city. They'll move on when they want to buy property and live a less stressful life. I think some people just want to justify something that's pretty simple, that you mentioned at the end of the video: they find the influencers' videos annoying. But it's not like some girl documenting her brunch in Soho is going to systematically destroy nyc, you know? As you said, they tend to stick to the already rich areas. Idk, the backlash against NYC tiktokers has felt pretty pearl-clutching/moral panic to me.

Yea well said. The main difference between LA and NYC is that you can buy property of decent size still in the LA area. When these people want to live more comfortably, if they can afford it, just like everyone else they will move somewhere for better property and fancy school districts.
Ironically both LA and NYC are too gentrified for influencers to move to without already being upper class

I swear NYC is how LA was back then during the high TH-cam era where every plain Jane from a small town wants to move there to “find themselves” which leads to nothing but gentrification, price raising, and pushing POC out of the city where they grew up and lived their entire lives. Just for those same plain janes to get depressed within that same year of moving and move back to their parents house like nothing happened 😹 And as a born and raised New Yorker I laugh at this because, I see it all the time at the college I go to. However, I believe is that it’s okay to experience life and do what you wanna do but, don’t romanticize a place that you know based on your experiences would put others who sees you posting the “positive” or “fun” part of living in the city instead of the actual reality in a difficult situation when they move here or whatever the case maybe. At the end of the day if you really want to live in places like NYC or LA actually have a realistic plan whether it’s career based or in general.

I was out there for a few months & it's craaaazy how many homeless people are out there now. And considering you damn near gotta sell your soul to "make it" out there, it wasnt worth it for me.
The only thing I love about LA are the natives there. They some of the realest folks I ever met outside of Chicago people. But majority of LA natives are moving since they're getting crushed by rising housing costs, so the little bit of real soul that's left there is slowly fading away.

Here's a bit of my anecdotal evidence. As someone who frequently watching Streamers on Twitch a lot of the them have moved to Austin, Texas.
People such as Maya Higa, Weston and Kalynn Koury, JSchlatt, Mizkif, Sodapoppin, xQc, Trainwrecks, Alexandria and Andre Botez, and so many more have moved there within the past few years. These are just the bigger names, each of these have their own little group of other streamers that also live in Austin so collectively they have made it beneficial to be around eachother and a lot of the time live together in "Streamer Houses" making Austin the place to be for anybody who wants to frequently collab with one another.
I am pretty sure that is all started with Sodapoppin (who also brought Among Us into the mainstream so he has a way with starting trends) moved to Austin with a couple of his friends, all of which large names on Twitch, and slowly more came in creating more streamer houses.
I can say that as it stands now it's less of a place to go for aspiring Streamers with no connections to go to, instead it is more of a playground for those who are big to create content with one another and quite literally merge their viewerbase as one bigger number. Either way it is being seen by a new generation of Twitch viewers as the place to be for these influencers in the same way I saw LA and NYC when I was growing up.

And despite being middle-class now I don’t think my mindset will ever change and that I would automatically associate cities with being affluent I always have a more poor kind of mindset rather than a glamorous kind

But the danger is less in the average sea level, and more in high tides and flooding from storms. Hurricane Sandy only happened 10 years ago and displaced thousands of New Yorkers. These kinds of storms are going to happen more frequently with climate change.

For instance, because cost of living isn't expensive I can afford to have my pets(I rescued 10 cats and 2 dogs), I can collect things I like without it being a financial burden, I can curl up in bed and the neighborhood around me is mostly silent besides my neighbors 3 chihuahuas that bark at anything that goes by. It is a calm life.
I see the appeal to big city life in the sense that it has an aesthetic that appeals to most people. However. I would never move somewhere like that even if I would make a ton of money off of content. I would prefer to stay where I am and make content about my hobbies, books I'm reading, my pets, gardening throughout the seasons, sustainability.
