Thank you for your intelligent and honest review. I am planning to buy a 2023 Mirage hatchback this fall, and I am more and more convinced that I'm making the right choice after seeing many reviews similar to yours.
I have the same car and color as the one Ben tested. It's a 2023. I love it! Back in the day I had VW Beetles, Nissan Sentra, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Yaris sedan, and three or four Geo Metro (Suzuki Swift rebadged). This car beats all of those in features and mileage. Soft ride, a bit too soft in the rear on the sedan when loaded. But that is to be expected from any vehicle that is loaded with people and luggage. Only negatives are high wind stability and the interior is a bit loud. But it is built to be a city car where those aren't really problems since speeds are lower. I live at about 4k feet in the mountains and drive at 70mph on roads around here and still love it. It has character and is fun to drive.
@@nunya9555 well said. Heck, Ben didn’t and should had covered ALL trim levels. His input on the car itself wasn’t even valid as he emphasized too much on base model
Do you know if you can adjust the brightness on the instrument cluster? I'm tempted to buy one brand-new but I couldn't find any button for that. Thank you.
I wish this segment was a lot more developed and it wasn't just the Mirage and Sentra competing for the bottom. I would love a super small 5 spd hatch that gets good gas mileage and is affordable, Sub $22,000
Sentra? You mean Versa. And the Versa is only cheaper than the Mirage bc Mitsubishi dropped the manual. Compare apples to apples and the Mirage is a better economy car since it has more options for the price and get better fuel economy.
I'm convinced that steering wheel is more expensive than the one in a Tesla Model 3. In fact the entire interior of this car is vastly superior to that in a Model 3.
This car is enough for my use. I just drive to work and home, sometimes go shopping. I think it's enough for me at an affordable price. I bought the car to use, I didn't buy the car to show off to anyone.
you could either buy this, or a used 2013-2016 lexus or toyota for the same price that would still outlast this. I bought my 2015 lexus ES350 with way more features and inexpensive maintenance with 50k miles for $19k. now it has 125k and no big maintenance issues. just shop around. This is the equivalent or getting a knock off car. to those who do end up getting this, please change your oil every 4-6k miles and change it after the first 1k miles!
Being able to have a fresh start with a new vehicle & warranty is very important for many Americans. Acceleration, however, is big deal too. A test drive of this, and Nissan’s Versa, is a must before pulling the trigger.
They both have the same Jatco trans, but the Mirage has a dipstick and is owner serviceable. The Mirage has a better warranty and mpg. The Versa may feel peppier, I don't know. If one wants a manual trans though, the Mirage is out. They stopped making them. I love my Mirage.
Exactly! It stupid of Ben to show bias really. Like he didn’t even bother mention another trim level available aka LE, BE, and SE that already worth paying for unlike The base trim level called ES (which IMO is not worth buying unless there a steep discount available which is unrealistic nowadays)
I am a G4 owner 2015 Model, It's faster if you put a little throttle going from 10kph to 80kph in 10 seconds you can feel the acceleration. 120kph in 17 seconds, however it lacks power and acceleration compared to 4 Cyclinder cars. Honda City with 4 cylinder and VTech is a good buy. Fuel is efficient and faster.
I recently bought the 2024 Mirage hatchback, I really like it so far. My commute to work is 80 miles each way, so I just wanted something with great fuel economy, cruise control, automatic/cvt transmission, and air conditioning of course (I'm in Florida). It's averaging over 45 miles per gallon so far and it has plenty of power for highway driving. I couldn't be happier, I'm honestly shocked that I don't see more of these cars on the road for how great the value is. By the way, I'm not a tiny person either, I'm 5'11" 220lbs. I also test drove the Nissan Kicks and actually felt less cramped in the Mirage. My dad, who is 5'11" 270lbs, rides shotgun fairly frequently and he fits just fine in the passenger seat as well.
I had a 2021 as a rental. Around town it's a great little car. On long highway drives it's slow and loud. The Versa is basically the same price and a much better car for long commutes.
Bought a 23 sedan earlier this year exactly like the one Ben drove. The color is diamond white, and has some pearl and metal flake. It is an upcharge special color. I think around $700. In the right light it is silver ish. When I got mine there were zero available on the lot. I had to put down a deposit and wait a week or so. The one I got was not expected by the dealer and they asked if I wanted it instead. Very happy with my decision. It is a good car! Took it on a thousand mile trip (one way) and got between 37 and 45 mpg driving in heavy traffic with lots of mountains and high speeds. There were 3 of us in the car and luggage for a week. The car seems to have more power now with around 7500 miles. It has a soft ride, but a bit under damped in the rear. Same trans as the Versa but this one has a dipstick and is easily serviced without a dealer computer.
Im honestly thinking about purchasing this as a long term car. I have owned a mitsubishi lancer and now I've been driving a chevy cobalt for the last 6 years
I did earlier this year, and love it. The cvt is user serviceable unlike the Versa, though they have the same trans. The Versa has to be hooked to a computer to get the right trans fluid level. But my Mirage has a dipstick. I have no doubt that a savvy guy could find a work around for filling the Versa, but as a mechanic myself, some things just are a pain to do. The Versa has more HP, which to some is a good thing. But that also lowers fuel economy and wears more on the cvt trans.
@nunya9555 its that CVT trans that gets me. I dealt with it in the Lancer model and it was okay because i sold the car but no idea how long it'd last. My Chevy cobalt is at 265,000 miles with only tires and regular oil change
There is no need to upgrade after you get one. It will serve you well unless you have a family of more than 4. I am middle aged and went back to this "basic" car that has more options than most cars made when I was first driving. Basic now was loaded then.
I have a 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback, and that little dude has never given me issues. It just does what it does, which is to take me from point A to point B.
I get that this car isn’t supposed to be fancy, but I seriously think that with it being that slow, it’s actually dangerous. There are times where you need to have some get up and go, and with this, if you had to gun it, like to avoid an accident, you’re completely screwed lol. There’s no pulling out in front of someone in this😂
Fair enough but in LA country with parking and rush hr this is a great car. I never need to go over 50mph to get to work. Back country I agree not a good car for evasive driving.
The manual version is much better as you can keep the revs high like a small displacement motorcycle. 3 banger makes much better sounds than your standard 4 cylinder. Cost of ownership is low with less oil, cheap tire replacement, and much less electronics to go bad.
I love this car to death learnt how to drive a manual in one and had great fun in it could send it flat out all the time and stay within the speed limit
You keep focusing on horsepower.we know it's slow ,but that's why it's perfect for a commuter car ..I think it's cute and very affordable with a great warranty..go Mitsubishi ❤
It is very refreshing not having to worry about driving a $45k+ vehicle around and worrying about it. These are fun simple cars people need to go back to basics to find out they do not need all of the junk tec. And stuff on new cars to have fun.
In my opinion, every car was designed to fulfill a specific mission or purpose. The Mitsubishi Mirage’s mission is to be an affordable, fuel-efficient, space-efficient, reliable, long-warranty vehicle. I believe it hits those marks commendably, but to do so, certain compromises are inevitable. To achieve the remarkably high fuel mileage, the car has to have a small, frugal engine and CVT transmission. It also requires a light-build with thin body panels and plastic interior trim and an absence of sound-deadening insulation. To be affordable, it was necessary to be very judicious with vehicle content, so one shouldn’t be surprised that it lacks a luxurious or high-quality feel. It’s clearly built to a certain price point. To meet reliability standards, it is simple and straightforward in its design and execution. Not a lot of electronics that can invite reliability issues as in more expensive cars. Finally, this is meant, first and foremost, to be a city car - thus its small exterior dimensions, good visibility, adequate low-speed torque, and soft suspension. Once you take the time to understand the mission of this unique car, it begins to make a lot of sense. It certainly falls short of more expensive cars out there, but it’s in a class by itself - an affordable, small, efficient city car, and for many of us, that’s all we’re looking for in a new car.
It's unnecessary. Just another thing to worry about. Let the car do it's thing. But it does have a light to tell the driver when the engine is cold, and hot.
Guys, I owned a 1987 Corolla. Carbureted and slow a/f. BUT Toyota put in a very smooth engine under the hood. A 1.6L 4 cyl with 74 hp. While it was slow, the engine was quiet and refined. This engine just doesn't sound good. Sounds strained. Wish it was a 4 cyl.
Street legal go kart that is a fuel sipper to travel from point a to point b. If you are looking for a sports car buy a Lamborghini. If its not a Lamborghini it's not a sports car - Ricky Bobby
This cost more than an Mazda MX 30 here in Norway and you can get the Nissan Leaf brand new 10% under the sticker on that Mirage. The US car market is kind of strange to me. Now you understand why we buy EV's at such a scale(85-90%). ICE cars normally has a 25-120% duty taxed on import with most cars in the 35-60% rate except for some hybrids that are only taxed VAT, but they still cost 45.000$ for the cheaper ones. A toyota Yaris Hybrid cost OTR between 30-35.000$. Cars are getting insanley expensive. The powers of this world obviously want us to own nothing and be happy(Klaus Schwab). The big economic clampdown has only just started tough............
You buy EVs at such a scale because you are being forced into it. I do not mean that in a disrespectful way. As an American I am appalled that anyone spends more than $40k on any vehicle, period. But to then find out that the F150 is the biggest seller and the average price paid is $58k, I just have no words. Blessings to you my northern brother.
Honestly, I wish my 2009 Mazda 6 V6 had an old-fashioned lock on the outside of the trunk. Comes with a switch-blade style key-fob. But only two ways to unlock the trunk. Button on the fob or button just to the left of the steering wheel. So, if your fob is dead and you don't feel like spending $300 for a new one; yes you can use the physical key. Just not for the trunk! Unfortunately, every entry-level car nowadays (under $20K) uses the horribly unreliable Jatco CVT transmission. No thank you. Especially since literally no mechanic in America works on those. So, you have a tight budget. Need a basic car to get to and from work. Maybe to head to the supermarket once a week. Occasionally go out to have fun with your friends. You keep a car for a long time. You do routine maintenance. Then one day, you need a new transmission. Which will cost you nearly as much as the car is worth. Better off buying a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic that is just over a decade old. Those will likely be more reliable for about the same amount of money.
I would not mind having one of these cars. I am currently renting a hatchback G4. The only problem is that it does not have enough leg room in tbe driver seat. I am a little over 6 feet tall. Does anyone know if the sedan version has more leg room?

There’s 4 trim levels ES (base) LE BE SE (top) The LE IMO is worth it for those ultra minimalists out there. The BE is best for those who want this G4 to show some extra personalities plus extra features The Top trim level called SE is loaded with nice features like push button start, LED lights, LED daytime running light, and more. It best for those who wants conveniences. Opposite of LE imo. I have the G4 SE and it is the 2nd 1 I have had. Previously owned G4 ES with the manual. Sold it for the SE CVT.
Thank you.
I love mine!! Had a Sentra before and like my 2017 GT model so much more. Can’t see myself ever getting rid of it unless I have to!
For those with no car , this car is the best car.
I wish this segment was a lot more developed and it wasn't just the Mirage and Sentra competing for the bottom. I would love a super small 5 spd hatch that gets good gas mileage and is affordable, Sub $22,000
The fiesta ST was in this segment for 20k but Ford stopped production here in Murica.
You basically described the Kia soul
There were tons of economy cars back then. But now the market wants something more posh and sporty.
Sentra? You mean Versa. And the Versa is only cheaper than the Mirage bc Mitsubishi dropped the manual. Compare apples to apples and the Mirage is a better economy car since it has more options for the price and get better fuel economy.
I wish we had more cars like this. Just a good car with less luxury.
I'm convinced that steering wheel is more expensive than the one in a Tesla Model 3. In fact the entire interior of this car is vastly superior to that in a Model 3.
Teslas suck. They're just toys for rich nerds.
Nothing wrong with these little cars, also pretty dependable to boot.
Ben your age really shows here. You should have seen the cars as in their size on 14 inch wheels back in the 1960's. Really big cars.
Exactly. He failed to mention that the same car can be had in 15” tyres for $700 more! It called LE trim level, a step
Up from
Base trim.
Being able to have a fresh start with a new vehicle & warranty is very important for many Americans. Acceleration, however, is big deal too. A test drive of this, and Nissan’s Versa, is a must before pulling the trigger.
There already a video out there. It pick up fine. Not a snail car obviously but again no driver should be complacent anywhere
They both have the same Jatco trans, but the Mirage has a dipstick and is owner serviceable. The Mirage has a better warranty and mpg. The Versa may feel peppier, I don't know. If one wants a manual trans though, the Mirage is out. They stopped making them. I love my Mirage.
Actually it’s a great car, but I must say, the way you advertised it, I’m sure you discouraged a lot of people, but overall great car
Exactly! It stupid of Ben to show bias really. Like he didn’t even bother mention another trim level available aka LE, BE, and SE that already worth paying for unlike
The base trim level called ES (which IMO is not worth buying unless there a steep discount available which is unrealistic nowadays)
That car should be no more than $10k in price.
Same can be said for Toyota Corolla
@@edgaryzen4925Give me some of what you're smoking lmfao 🤡
If that car was 10k. It would sell out in one day.
Yeah right! And a new Mercedes should be no more than $30k? Duh!
I’m almost to the point where I’d give up my suv for one of these. I’m tired of having an almost $800 car payment
Thats crazy, why?
We have a 23 mirage hatchback raliart version..fun drive,ez parking, low insurance cost, awesome mpg, and great warranty excellent value
That 80s/70s Honda Prelude at the back!
It’s a cool car. I’m getting a 2023 Prius xle for my next car. A decent step up from the 2015 smart Iv been driving the past three years.
I had a 2021 as a rental. Around town it's a great little car. On long highway drives it's slow and loud. The Versa is basically the same price and a much better car for long commutes.
Not bad looking. Just needs some bigger wheels and around 100 hp
This car's looking pretty good now what with current gas prices.
It’s cool seeing new car still being sold for relatively cheap. Definitely gonna consider a Mirage if I’m ever in need of a car on a tight budget.
U forgot to put it in sport mode it's slightly quicker compared to eco mode slide the shifter to the right on drive mode to put it in Ds
Gonna buy it, it’s my first car I’ll buy and is the one I can afford for now
There is no need to upgrade after you get one. It will serve you well unless you have a family of more than 4. I am middle aged and went back to this "basic" car that has more options than most cars made when I was first driving. Basic now was loaded then.
lol the route you take for this drive is right near a field I play softball at 🤣 didn't know you were a Utahn
A brand new economy car being anywhere near the neighborhood of 20k is unacceptable
?
@@lordrayden3045 it’s too expensive. It should be 12k or less

That’s ridiculous
I have a 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback, and that little dude has never given me issues. It just does what it does, which is to take me from point A to point B.
if Geo Metro still built cars for the U.S., this is it!
Yep, like a more powerful Metro sedan. I had many Metros, and this is a way better car. But it has that character and feel
Now my dream car!
@brianeugeneleefar from happening.
how about the nissan versa???
This car just screams “work harder!”
It screams “I don’t live my life being defined by my car” :) Spend the money on things that are actually important.
@@froggy0162 Best most aware comment!
Great review Ben ! I like the Mitsubishi for what it is , a simple runabout car you don't have to spend a lot of money to obtain and insure.
You need to test drive a Smart 453 Fortwo, it will blow your mind!
In a negative way..
I was really hoping this car had a manual transmission, would've loved a review on that
Unfortunately Mitsubishi dropped the manual last year or the year before.
This little car is awesome. It has more features than my 45K Gladiator. Kudos to Mitsubishi.
Had my 2015. One of the best cars I've owned!
Great review, Ben.
One good thing about driving a car from 2001 is when I eventually replace it with a Mirage the interior and tech won't feel like a step down.
It not that dangerous. Simply shift to Ds mode and floor the pedal. Beside no one should get too comfortable when driving. Defensive driving matters.
@@shaiapouf420around LA I was able to get 50 MPG in average thanks to 1.5-2k RPM, even in Ds mode when needed.
The manual version is much better as you can keep the revs high like a small displacement motorcycle. 3 banger makes much better sounds than your standard 4 cylinder. Cost of ownership is low with less oil, cheap tire replacement, and much less electronics to go bad.
I was around and driving in 1995. That ac control my friend is not like from 1995. You give 1995 way too much credit. 😂😂
LOL
Yep. This one is automatic climate control!
Japanese made cars are better and that's a fact I've owned many Japanese made cars and they are amazing. Made to last.
18k$ is quite expensive … I thought it is below 10k

Not after all the post-Covid price increases on all sold goods of all kinds nowadays. You'll never see low pricing like that anymore.
It was $10 to $14k.
@@streamingvideo6654 the Corolla was $17k. Incomparable era.
I think its funny that most of the parts in the interior look like they are from an 2010s Versa lol 😂
Slow car drives FAST is more fun than Fast car drives SLOW..😂
There was a news report that said that the chances of dying in this car were high.
Driving ANY car is the most dangerous thing you will do on a usual basis. Giant trucks and SUVs hit these little cars hard...
So Mitsubishi basically replaced most of their models with re-badged Renaults. I wonder whether they'll offer them in the US also.
It is very refreshing not having to worry about driving a $45k+ vehicle around and worrying about it. These are fun simple cars people need to go back to basics to find out they do not need all of the junk tec. And stuff on new cars to have fun.
why tf is that so damn expensive , it should half of that price
I mean a base Sandero which costs half as much has a manual transmission, no AC and 65hp

You feel it's slower because you put the AC on, it's a 3 Cyclinder engine. That's why it's fuel efficient and lacks power if the engine fan is on😂
3:30 "collision assistance" i dont want to see that on my car 😂
Got my daughter one and she loves it
In my opinion, every car was designed to fulfill a specific mission or purpose.
I would want a temperature gauge for the engine which looks like an option on this vehicle
When people mention slow, I think back when the VW Beetle only had about 43 hp.
Street legal go kart that is a fuel sipper to travel from point a to point b.
If you are looking for a sports car buy a Lamborghini.
If its not a Lamborghini it's not a sports car - Ricky Bobby
74 horses??!! 😂
No, hamsters. 🐹
Bro i used to drive a geo prism at over 110mph. Hell, i took a mazda protege to 145mph.

probably the only cvt that last because it doesnt have enough power to break it
Wish I had a Mitsubishi dealer closer to me.
I'm guessing this car has drum brakes in the rear at this price point
Yep. They work well on a 2200 pound car
Sounds like a lawn mower but if it's very reliable, I'll give u $10,000 to close the deal.
Nice car with great interior and good price ❤
I'm gonna be renting one of these, haha. Hopefully, it's fast enough for the freeway.
74 hp i think some 4 wheelers are faster 😅😂
Buy a manual.
I would not mind having one of these cars. I am currently renting a hatchback G4. The only problem is that it does not have enough leg room in tbe driver seat. I am a little over 6 feet tall. Does anyone know if the sedan version has more leg room?
when lancer v impreza war was over and u make a mini lancer with a subie brake lamp lol
what's this. finally a car designed with affordability in mind! its been about 15+ years since anyone has made any! too bad ford/Chevy/GM/dodge isn't into this kind of thing to drive down the costs even further for being domestic. i'm not about that %20+ income to a car payment nonsense. we need vehicles for the working class. no way you can buy anything even most used off minimum wage these days.
I will say that the G4 Mirage does have a a funky kinda look. But if you get one, get the ES model. It's loaded to the max and get it with the alloy wheels. The alloy makes it look like a little racer plus it doesn't look like S!@# like every other gas saving cars ever made
There’s 4 trim levels
ES (base)
LE
BE
SE (top)
The LE IMO is worth it for those ultra minimalists out there.
The BE is best for those who want this G4 to show some extra personalities plus extra features
The Top trim level called SE is loaded with nice features like push button start, LED lights, LED daytime running light, and more. It best for those who wants conveniences. Opposite of LE imo.
I have the G4 SE and it is the 2nd 1 I have had. Previously owned G4 ES with the manual. Sold it for the SE CVT. The different between these 2 is day and night
@@edgaryzen4925 Yup, I've got the G4 SE as well, mine is the 2023. I like all the features as well as the heated seats and the inferno red paint. Good luck with yours, I love mine
@@vinnygraziano1318 yeah I agree.
I must say, for a quirky good reason, every time I drive my G4 SE, it ALWAYS reminds me 1 thing below:
I successfully saved $$$ from buying the 23’ Toyota Corolla LE (base model) especially the fact that it gets much better gas mileage.
Yeah the Corolla overall is a much better car objectively speaking (and I’m not gonna deny that 🤷🏽) but it is no longer a bargain purchase. The L trim level (below LE) got discontinued unfortunately.
To each to own.
