My mother watched this soap from the beginning until she died in 1974. I watched it with her on sick days and during the summer. Sometimes I'd come home from school and she'd excitedly tell me something that happened on the soap as if it were our own family. In 1986, I rented a VCR to record 30th anniversary show which brought back all the old characters like Ellen and Penny. The actor who played Chris died a few months later. I still have that tape and watch it occasionally. Started watching semi-regularly during the period when Meg Ryan, Marissa Tomei and Julianne Moore were on. Notice in this episode how leisurely the commercials were then. Now they'd fit 5 of them loudly into the same time slot.

She wasn't here very long but long enough to imprint on my life and my heart what unconditional love could be. 🙏🌈☝️♥️ Love you Grandma

I’ve read some backstory on Edie over the years, but it seems that there’s always some holes or gaps missing in her story. Too bad there aren’t more episodes available involving her story. Does anyone know why Edie and Penny were on the outs at this time? I think it’s interesting that her and other Hughes members were actually mentioned when Chris died in 1986. And I think Edith was also mentioned again in 2000 from what I read, but I can’t recall why? 🤔🤔

This is when woman weren’t in the working force and had time to catch up on their stories which were only 15 minutes long. I’m 56. My Mom never watched the soaps before, during or after. She watched once (I think ATWT) in the 60’s and my Father came home from work early and caught her crying. He said WTH are you crying about? She never watched a soap again. LOL!!! It just wasn’t her jam. She had 4 kids by then and didn’t have time or the desire to sit and watch tv during the day. After, I was born she always worked. That said, it must been so neat to watch these shows in the early days. They were simple but were high drama at their best.

My first visit to the set of ATWT was on 12/20/71 for the live broadcast of Episode #4068. Charles Paul (the musical director and organist) let me sit on the left end of the organ bench while he played the theme song and background music. He used a Steinway piano, Hammond B3 organ, and a Simone celeste. (The celeste was used for the bell tones in the middle break and the long closing theme.). At that time, the show originated from Studio 42 at the CBS Broadcast Center in Manhattan at 524 West 57 Street.

They are mostly Blue Collar and on Eastenders Lou Beale the Family Patriarch had an "Intervention" with her Children. There was her Son Pete, his Wife Kathy and their Son Ian. There was Pete's Twin Sister Pauline, her Husband Arthur, and their Children, Michelle, Martin (A Late In Life Baby), and Mark who would die of AIDS (He had unsafe sex with his Girlfriend). She didn't mince words and she tried to tell them to get their "act" together, only Kathy, Ian & Martin are still on the Canvas but they don't listen and pay the price.

So their characters (at around 24:40 and throughout this episode) were "Chris" and "Pa." Yet, I'll always associate the both of them with playing out a scene of ATWT on the Friday afternoon episode of November 22, 1963 at 1:40pm ET when, at that moment, they were abruptly interrupted by that CBS News bulletin that would change America forever. :( BTW. I was born in 1967 and I only have that knowledge from reading about it and by watching ingeminations (replays) of that particular footage on various documentaries produced over the years concerning the assassination of President Kennedy and about the history of television.

From what I read, she and Jim were meant to eventually marry and live happily ever after, which was planned by Irna Phillips (creator and writer of As the World Turns, and one of the originators of the soap opera genre on radio before moving the television).
Unfortunately, the execs at Proctor and Gamble who financed the soap didn't want to look like they approved of adultery, so Jim had to die, and within a few years Edie was out.
But Ruth Warrick did well in music and acting for decades before returning to soaps on All My Children years later.

They stopped making Ivory Snow because it was soap, and not detergent & would deactivate the fire retardant on children's pajamas.

Was that the very first TV broadcast of the show? I know it actually started on radio. Gosh, I guess since the shows were filmed in black & white, the actors didn't have to be good looking, huh?

Note: I did more research and learned I was incorrect. That info is in the following comment.
That's correct. It's unfortunate because there were so many creative people who never had the chance to make their mark on this new medium until racist barriers were broken down. And the struggle still continues, but we have great television from a diverse array of talented creators now.

    • @Phoenix-zy1cx

Wait, I was wrong! I just did some research and discovered The Hazel Scott Show, which was created and hosted by Hazel Scott, a jazz pianist and Civil Rights activist.
Here is the wiki article on her show: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hazel_Scott_Show
None of the episodes still exist, but in 1950 she made her mark on television and she definitely deserves to be remembered.
Hazel Scott's break into TV is told in the book "When Women Invented Television" by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, which includes the stories of the rise of 4 women who had significant impacts on the creation of TV before it became dominated by white men. It's a great book and a fun read!
