  • An episode of "As the World Turns" from 1961. This popular soap opera ran from 1956 to 2010. This episode is about a mother's attempts to get her son back, who was adopted by another two people several years earlier. There are something which should be noted: Being a daytime program, the episode runs notably shorter than a prime-time series of the same era.

My mother's favorite. I was to start first grade that autumn so I would have been watching this with her (no kindergarten in our small country community). All the old folks have passed except one 99 year old aunt who is still sharp.

I always found Ellen to be one of ATWT's most memorable characters, because of Patricia Bruder's sensitive performances, as well as the consistency of her character. Though she was a soft-spoken matriarchal supporting character in later years, I found it fascinating how Ellen survived decades of sorrow and scandal, including getting pregnant out of wedlock (and her status-conscious family's fear of embarrassment in the conservative, Midwestern town of Oakdale) her giving up Dan for adoption, and serving a prison term for the murder of the psychotic Franny Brennan. Ellen also had to deal with the tragic losses of her parents and stepfather Doug (her grandfather Judge Lowell was her most consistent parental figure), Dan, stepson Paul, and both husbands, Tim and David. Whenever there was a whiff of scandal involving Annie, Dee, Betsy, or especially Emily, Ellen worried that her daughters and granddaughters would experience the same pain she did (and in many cases, they did). I found Ellen, along with Bob, Lisa, Kim, John, and Nancy, to be Oakdale's ultimate survivors.

Right on point about Ellen's concern for her offspring suffering as she did. There's a 1972 episode where she shares that concern with Dan because of his problems with wife Susan. Ellen didn't want to see him fall into the trap of a loveless marriage like her parents had, and the effects of that marriage on her childhood.

Back in the 80's and 90's, she tried to guide wayward adult Emily, but often times, it fell on deaf ears.

This was my grandma's favorite soap . I think she watched it all through the 1960s and most of the 1970s.
My mom watched it for alittle while but her show mainly was One Life To Live

When I hear the theme song I think of my mom. She watched from 1957 till it went off the air. Brings back memories. ❤

How I miss the character of Ellen Lowell Stewart. Just wish she was invited back for the end of the show. She was a central character in my book. So much history there and the powers that be seemed to just throw her away

I heard the storyline of Ellen fighting for custody of Dan was controversial back then.

Patricia Bruder was a terrific actress. They aged her character when Ellen was still very young by powdering her hair and having her wear matronly clothes. She even altered her voice a bit to sound older.

A shame that Irna Phillips caused Rosemary Prinze to leave and never return full-time.

@Ila Hilda Sissac Creator Irna Phillips was controlling to the nth degree with her actors, especially with her tv baby ATWT. She fired Helen Wagner as Nancy Hughes cuz she didn't pour coffee correctly.

The most famous episode of this show is the one that was periodically interrupted, then finally pre-empted, due to the Kennedy assassination. The last bit of regularly scheduled programming before the network went to nonstop news coverage was a dog food commercial.

My brother was 10 and was watching with my mom that day. He still talks about it. Ironically, I used to record Y&R and ATWT and have hours of unedited 9/11 coverage on an old VHS tape.

Wow this must have been the storyline with Ellen Lowell later Stewart and Dan stewart and her getting Dan back who of course years later would end up fathering Betsy and Emily.
Not sure when David stewart got introduced who was Dan's biological dad.
And when Ellen married David and brought them together as a family and by the way the comments about Dan and Susan and it bieng a loveless marriage I dont know about that or wouid not necessarily say that but Susan was a hell raiser and an alcoholic. And of course Doug Marland brought Marie masters back as Susan and yes he had her make mistakes and do bad things at times like the whole bad Dr Bob cheating on Kim with Susan but did it so well.
    And got away with it.
If anyone deserves shame it's Mary Ellis bunim and shame on her for what she did to Eileen Fulton and shame on her for dropping Helen Wagner and Don mcgloughlin to recurring and Nancy and Chris back in 1982 1983.
But thank God Doug Marland came along and said the Hughes should be the center of the show and got Helen Wagner back and don mcloughlin back but sad he died a few months later.
In 1986 and shame on what the show did to Patricia Bruder I think around 1996 or 1997.
But at least Doug Marland kept her on the show after Henderson Forsythe died who played David Stewart.
Which I think happened in 1989 was when Henderson died over all the Doug Marland years were my favorite from 1985 to 1993.
As for Irma Phillips and her firing Helen Wagner over the coffee pouring incident p and g made her right away hire her back.
But as for Irma Phillips she got put in her place by harding Lemay and Paul Rauch years later over at another world in the 1970s.
As the medium did need to evolve out of the 1950s housewife model something harding Lemay understood and Doug Marland especially got And understood.
Finally I will say this Patricia Bruder was a, real talent and yes I believe she is still alive I know she did an interview with Alan Locher on his Locher Room podcast a few years ago.

How selfish of that woman to want to rip a 4-and-a-half-year-old child from the only family he knows, and the only life he knows. It's not as if he's still a newborn. Also, her attorney told her with the conflict of interest he will have to resign from his job to represent her but still she didn't care. I hope she lost her case.

    • @gabrielstern4992
      @gabrielstern4992 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Nope Ellen did get Dan back and even married his biological dad David stewart and that child is Dan swewart who would end up married to Susan stewart as played by the brilliant and lovable Marie masters even when Susan did bad things. and father Betsy Stewart with someone else and Emily stewart with Susan stewart but forget Susan's maiden name, and then marry Kim Hughes then die.
Shows how insensitive and reactive and probably how little you know about the shows history.
But this episode is a real gem because very little exists of the early years of atwt on tape before the show went from bieng live to taping.
Which would happen in the early 1970s
And this episode is an important document to a very important part of the shows history especially the baby Dan stewart storyline which was very bold for its time.
And a document of am important charecter and storyline in the shows history.

This must of been ground breaking at the time. I knew there was some mystery about Dan Stewart but never knew I didn’t start watching until I was little in the later 60’s. Watch my whole life until it went off the air.
