Gotta love that morning grin Tim!!! I know this video is quite old but I'm planning my first long distance Moto-camping trip (at the retired & youthful age of 60) to Montana from the Northeast this July and love the inspiration I get from you and your channel!!! ...thank you sir!!!
Love the idea of putting the date when you did this. For those of us planning similar trips it gives us a relative idea of what the weather is like in that part of the country that particular time of year. Great job Tim. Ride safe
Great point and I agree. A date when things are filmed would be great, for the reasons mentioned here and to better understand the cadence of the trip.
Totally agree! I live in Canada, but not too far away from where this is. We've had snow here, and are no where near 100 degrees anymore. This had to be a while ago. Hahaha.
Kyle: We MT kids all know the weather here is a perpetual variable. I live in Missoula & hike Glacier every year, so I'll give it a shot: Going to The Sun Road gets twenty feet of snow/year. It's never open before mid June, usually at least by July 4th. The best time for hiking/traffic is the last week of August as most kids/tourists are getting back to their lives. It's usually the best time for ripe huckleberries, currents, strawberries, & thimble berries, too. Mosquitos are as mild as they get. I have encountered grizzly bears in the wild 9 different times in MT. Bring protection if you plan to hike/camp, & always prepare & hang your food & aromatic everything's well away from tents. I hope this answers some of your questions. Enjoy Big Sky Country.
In 1990 I did that ride on a fully loaded touring bicycle in the rain, even having to replace a blown rear tyre part way up. On the run down I recall coasting for at least 25 minutes, what a relief. Outstanding run on a motorbike.
i've ridden the going-to-the-sun highway, so much fun. picked up a drunk kanuck hitchhiker at the base, then enjoyed a (cough) spirited ride with some friends... by the time we reached the end & stopped, the kanuck jumped off the bike & literally kissed the ground. also, he was completely sober. good times, thanks for the reminder of a great road. :-) PS -- good idea to avoid bears; i was run out of my campsite in the bridge nat'l forest by a griz.
While I have completed many of the 'bucket list' roads on my list, this is the one I would like to ride next. Thanks for sharing your ride and experiences with us. I've heard this road/park can get really busy due to the shorter riding season. Providing the date was a nice touch. Get you some good sleep.
I use to Fly forest fires and was lucky enough to fly the whole park several times, and on days off drive the roads, On of my favorite places in the world. First thing I noticed on the guy in the yellow shirt was the Bear spray. Thanks for ride.
This trip reminded of when I was riding through the states, I actually set up my tent at night along a gravel road and some cows woke me up I looked up and saw cows a house oh my no a good place to camp since I didn’t ask permission. I packed up and left, like you I road all day and it was late. I was too tired to continue. Your trips remind me of my adventures... great rides..
We did the Sun Road a few yrs ago. From Yellowstone North to Shelby then on US-2 to St. Mary's. Sun Road to West Glacier. Took US-2 around Glacier. Awesome ride.
I rode through Glacier in mid-June. The place was a parking lot of cars and campers. So much congestion that the Road to the Sun was closed. Ranger told me to "come back later." Glad that you got to ride it.
Reminisent of my ride there 5-6 years ago. Camped in the forest near the west entrance a good distance from the bike with all my food so the bears didn't get me. 6:08 Water was freezing in mid-August. Good to see the road construction completed. Still remember the miles of gravel road I rode on to get to the east side. Nowadays I find public camping sites and ask someone if I can sleep next to my bike on my cot.
Hi Tim., I keep noticing increasing production values over time, great work all round. I'd love to ride in the USA again. Just returned to the UK from Europe after 6.5 weeks touring. Took my 22kg camping bag, never used it once, ha ha. Just discovered airbnb. Usually always in my tent but this was a very different learning experience in October and November. Keep dodging them grizzlies 😇
Hey Tim 🤚🏼. It’s tues. evening here in Marietta Ga, temp low tonight expected low 20’s (ouch) Weekend forecast, am 33, high mid 50’s. Kinda difficult to ride the new Tiger in the forest. Will endeavor to persevere any chance I get. Happy Trails and Ride Safe as well👍🏼 😎 🌍
I'm watching this in November and the sun sets at 4:47 pm. reminds me of my college days of top ramen 😁 I had to quit eating those cup of noodles, to much sodium. Camping at places like that is part of the trip. I wouldn't mind at least you got a casino and gas station right there so its not all bad.
One of the best national parks for me. The first park I visited by myself. I feel that every national park has that moment that takes your breath away. Had more than one moment at Glacier. I was driving and saw some people pulled over to the side of the road. I was curious why they stopped since I didn't see anything. So I stopped and I will never forget the moment I turned around and saw this massive glacier behind me. Absolutely breathtaking! . The only problem with Glacier is I was too afraid to hike by myself (grizzlies) But I took advantage of ranger led hikes and had another moment when I saw that wild river. Can't wait to go back.
Pro tip from a Montanan, pick any forest service road and usually you'll find at least a couple camp sites along it. Bring rope to tie anything scented like food or deodorants at least 15 feet up in the air in a nearby tree. If possible on a branch 3-5 feet out from the trunk so things like bears can't get it. Just throw the rope over the branch, hoist up the bag and tie it off to the trunk. I live in Missoula lots of great camping and scenery in the area. Sad you ended up having to pick a parking lot haha.
Another great vidro... well done. I've rode that pass several years ago.... and still believe it to be the most beautiful ride in North America.... and btw, definitely bear country. Glad you didn't chance it.. you wouldn't have rested anyway. Safe travels.
I have been to Glacier 4 times. Each visit was for a week, I highly recommended staying for at least 5 days, so that you can really experience, the wonders of Glacier, and Into the Canadian part of Waterton International Park. Glacier is a must do destination, and if you can do it, after school starts, it will be empty.
Did a big trip from KC to Banff in August, was through there. I will definitely suck it that that road is something to behold. And I will also comment that you can spend a lot of time in Idaho, it’s spectacular.
5 weeks on the road next summer !!! Pennsylvania to alberta ,BC , west coast , south west to home .will be in Glacier park for sure !! Wife has never been there ! My 3 rd time !! The multistrada will get to stretch her legs on that one !!!😄😄😄😎😎
I noticed that you covered your bike during the overnight in the casino parking lot. Do you normally cover your bike at night? Do you feel it's beneficial to haul a cover around while traveling?
I have been covering my bike since i left, it does seem worth while for a few reasons. For one peace of mind. It seems to keep people from noticing it, and the things that are left on it that could be easily taken. Plus if anyone tries to remove it i would hear it from my tent, animals included in that. It might be overkill but it helps me relax.
Was out there August 2018, road was closed at Logan’s Pass due to wildfires. Western half of Park was closed. Need to get back and see the western half. Maybe summer or fall 2021.
❤❤❤❤❤ It's my top 5 park so far. I was there about a week after you. It was gorgeous with all the wild flowers. Also went both ways on the Going to the Sun Road. Very cool they allowed you to sleep there.
Its one of my favorites too. Too bad I missed you there! I've heard the loop wasnt that impressive so I'm glad I did the road out and back instead of going around the park. Safe travels!
Did Going to the Sun road this July also with some friends it is just epic. A lot of traffic though but still worth it. You're correct on a bike is totally different experience than in a cage. I just absolutely love riding out west being from the Midwest it is just so completely different.
@@FTAAdventures Yes I am betting that we just missed each other in a few places. Yellowstone, Bad Lands, Wall-Drug, Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore. If you saw a Yellow V-Strom hanging around 3 Harley Baggers that was me. Lol
Still enjoying and looking forward to your videos. Yes, the breathtaking views and clear fresh water are important, yet I find myself drawn to your trials and tribulations of what happens when one undertakes the freedom of riding through this great country. When you mention that you’re “doing some things to the bike” - feel free to share that as well. Keep up the good work! Chin up, wheels down...

That’s a beauty of a ride if you can avoid the traffic or wknds. Yup , don’t get that smell in a car. If I’m riding in that area that’s the route I usually take back up into Canada in thru kananaskis which in itself is more beautiful riding. If you ever cross the border to Canada there u have a place to stay !
Hi, Thanks for another Great Video. What Year is your Bike, and how many Miles have you put on it already? I’m getting a 2006 R1200GS on 05-22-22 and can’t wait to go Riding. I just hope it’s as good of a Bike as it looks. I heard something about Brake Servo Problems on these, so I’m hoping it’s not anything Major or not Common. He said he hasn’t had any problems on this Bike. It’s a Beautiful Bike and very well taken care of. Any input from you would be really appreciated.
So I've been following you all year i just have to ask what are you planing to do through the winter? Im sure someone has asked this already but would be awesome if you could comment. BTW I've done that ride three times and it never gets old. Biggest problem I found was that car drivers are totally oblivious to motorcyclists and they just pull out right in front of you look you right int the eye like its you're fault. Still an awesome ride. Tim love what your doing if i had the balls to do the same I,m sure i would live a lot longer!! One other question if you could do the same thing on any other bike would you go for the beemer again? I have a V Strom 1000 and im not sure it could take the abuse your 1200 could take.
Hey Dave! In currently in Florida and will be staying in the southernmost states for the winter and also visiting Baja for a while. I will do a video about winter plans soon. Thanks!
There's just something awesome about the adventure, the scenery and the challenges of finding a camp site. I can't get over how you've still got some snow there! Thought it would be getting warmer! We've got snow in our snowy mountains and a few hours away raging bushfires. It's crazy! Anyhow, great video as always mate, really enjoy it! I'm going to have to go back to your vlogging gear video, I just can't get mine right at the moment!
Hey Tim! Another great job! Did you ever listen to Aaron Copeland‘s fanfare for the common man? Every time I watch one of your great videos, I think that what you make is a fanfare for the common motorcyclist, LOL I always love the realism and the juxtaposition of The beauty that you see every day and the sometimes challenging situations that you run into when you want to end the day. Grizzly bears and casino parking lots are certainly more common than many of us would believe on a trip like yours. Thank you for sharing with us not only the splendor of the scenery, but the realism of day-to-day living on a motorcycle!
Nice video...Love the different shots. We rode The Going to the Sun Road In August on the way home from Canada. Loved it and will definitely do it again. Video coming soon, we are behind on editing. Thanks safe journey.
Nice video, I appreciate you sharing the logistical aspects, e.g. finding a camp site, as well that the beautiful scenery. I enjoy sharing your adventures but for some reason the search for basic human needs as you trek across the continent is more interesting to me than the majestic mountains & rivers you cross along the way. Don’t get me wrong, the landscape is amazing and I love it, just isn’t as interesting as your personal journey. ¡Via con Dios mi amigo! By the way... I saw you wearing a FTA hat in one of your videos so I bought one! Should be here in approximately a week:-)
Hey Rik, thanks for the comment! I get that about the scenery not being as valuable as the person journey. I will try to include more of that in the future. Thanks for buying a hat!
Tim, good idea riding back over Going to the Sun. I did the loop you initially discussed, wasn’t worth it. The scenery was real plain plus a lot of road construction.
There are alot of wild horses on the loop. Make sure to fill up on the east side... stop & go in the park eats up gas... I learned the hard way, forturnatly someone leant me some gas.
Back on the rails with this, Tim. Good. It must be a bitch editing clips that were shot 4-5-6 months before. I like the stream-of-consciousness patter while you're riding. It adds a dimension, especially to the unplanned decisions of a nomad. And a sense of the optimist v. cautious process.
I got in late to a KOA (only late camp option) in Arizona (I think Winslow area) and awakened the owner. He was annoyed. It was pitch black and he told me for $15 I could set up my tent by a hill across a road from the other campers. I thanked him, set up tent, snuggled into my mummy bag and fell soundly asleep. At approximately 2:00am the earth trembled and an ungodly and chest shaking sound awoke me. Never before nor since have I been so terrified. Trapped in my bag I realized I was about to be run over by a freight train. Death was upon me, or so I thought. A 4-5 engine coal train went wizzing by at 70mph feet from my tent. The hill was the railroad track berm. The train was seemingly miles long. After it passed I knew that my annoyed KOA manager had set me up because of my late near midnight arrival. One more similar train passed later that early morning which still scared me but as least I knew the second time I probably wasn’t going to die. I packed up early, around 6:30 am, and as I was pulling out of the KOA I waved at the laughing KOA owner on my way out. He knew I knew he new I knew he had set me up. I laughed with him as I waved goodbye. I think had I stayed he and I would have become good friends. A great prank deserves great respect. 😉
Hi Tim, I know how you feel camping ⛺️ on the AUTO RV PARKING LOT your video is like the real thing no more worrying about those camp destroying GRizzlies Bears 🐻 I need my beauty sleep 😴 hay who doesn’t, Going to the Sun 🌞 road is amazing just south of Alberta Canada nice Love ❤️ Montana Country. Ok State love ❤️ you’re videos!!!❤️🐻❤️👍
So Grasshopper, did you stack those rocks? If so, I have nothing more to teach you! Good video! I put myself in those "no campsite" situations more times than I'd like to admit. Freecampsites.net is my friend. Almost all casinos welcome anyone that may drop a dime!
Lol, U-Pick traffic over getting eaten by grizzly bear, come on man where's your adventurous side.😂 I once stayed at a campsite next to a freeway and boy did that suck.
Part of me really dislikes you, just about every video forces me to add yet another place to my bucket list, hahaha. Side note: I'd bet the house (see what I did there?) that the panel van in the Casino P-lot at 14:00, or so, is stealth camping.
Forty Times Around: I rode through a 99 mile stretch along a river with no cell reception, no gas, no services of any kind. I ended in Kalispell for the night and hit the Going to the Sun Road the next day. Two days later I was back in northeastern MN. Thoroughly enjoy you videos.
I made that ride from Ohio and came in the east entrance of the park in August this year, all the gear I bought was from your channel i spent 15 days on the road could have used up the whole summer doing that stuff easy it’s a learning process thanks for all you do.
holy shit !i need to get to gnp. really cool that u put the date on the vid. just curious....how long on average does it take from filming to posting ? and how much time do you spend on editing , roughly ?
Thanks Paul! It takes anywhere from 10-16 hours to edit and upload everything for a video. Apparently at the moment I'm quite a few months behind but should catch up soon as I slowed down on the filming once I started heading east.
@@FTAAdventures hey tim , thank you once again for responding ! i often wondered how much time goes into your off the bike work. it is much more than i thought. coming from someone w no experience , now i know. i truly enjoy all of your videos . you are doing a great job and service . be safe and be well !

Hey Dave! In currently in Florida and will be staying in the southernmost states for the winter and also visiting Baja for a while. I will do a video about winter plans soon. Thanks!
Nice footage. Glad you weren’t bear bait.
Hi Tim, as always fantastic landscape, but a modest sleeping space! Greetings from Michael from Germany!
Hi Michael! Thanks my friend
Thanks Brett! The snow was only high up in elevation but still crazy to see that time of year. Safe travels!
Hey Tim! Another great job! Did you ever listen to Aaron Copeland‘s fanfare for the common man? Every time I watch one of your great videos, I think that what you make is a fanfare for the common motorcyclist, LOL
I always love the realism and the juxtaposition of The beauty that you see every day and the sometimes challenging situations that you run into when you want to end the day. Grizzly bears and casino parking lots are certainly more common than many of us would believe on a trip like yours. Thank you for sharing with us not only the splendor of the scenery, but the realism of day-to-day living on a motorcycle!
Thanks John! I've never listened to that but I will check it out 🙂
Best video yet. Winging it the way to go..
Thanks Dave!
Nice video...Love the different shots. We rode The Going to the Sun Road In August on the way home from Canada. Loved it and will definitely do it again. Video coming soon, we are behind on editing.
Thanks safe journey.
Thanks! Looking forward to seeing your video. I am also behind on editing 😬
Forty Times Around - Tim, you are a great guy. I’m happy to support you in my little, meager ways:-)
Hey Tim, Epic episode - What do you use to stop the microphone wind noise?
Tim, good idea riding back over Going to the Sun. I did the loop you initially discussed, wasn’t worth it. The scenery was real plain plus a lot of road construction.
Thanks! That is good to know for next time! Glad I didnt go that way.
Trying to learn, what are the "few, little things" you did to the bike?
Do you bring bear maze when sleeping in the woods
That is a great story Bruce thanks for sharing! Sounds like a great prank haha.
First question I had was - when was this ride? 'Cause I'm betting it wasn't in November. OK July - that sounds right!
Gud video. With all the open country you wud Invision many primitive camping opportunities. Though it is 🐻 country.
Thanks! Yes, Montana is a beautiful state indeed. Going to the Sun Road is so much fun.
I've camped like like a couple times. It sucks but it works. Woohoo no grisly bear
So Grasshopper, did you stack those rocks? If so, I have nothing more to teach you! Good video! I put myself in those "no campsite" situations more times than I'd like to admit. Freecampsites.net is my friend. Almost all casinos welcome anyone that may drop a dime!
Haha I didnt, but it was pretty neat. Guess I'll have to learn how to do that.
That is beautiful country, and that still beats the HELL out of our COWBOY CAMP LOL
Lol, U-Pick traffic over getting eaten by grizzly bear, come on man where's your adventurous side.😂 I once stayed at a campsite next to a freeway and boy did that suck.
"No body joined me" LMAO
Do you find lane splitting being illegal in most states annoying? I live in the UK and would probably stop biking if lane splitting became illegal.
Part of me really dislikes you, just about every video forces me to add yet another place to my bucket list, hahaha. Side note: I'd bet the house (see what I did there?) that the panel van in the Casino P-lot at 14:00, or so, is stealth camping.
Haha understandable Dave. There are lots of great places to see! I didnt notice that until you mentioned it, I bet you're right.
You said you came up through Idaho. Did you ride through the Nez Perce National Forest?
I did go through a little bit if it, its gorgeous!
Hey, Tim. For free, boondock, camping; try the campendium website
Pull 90% of the traffic out and Glacier is awesome - otherwise I would ride on the other side of the river
Hey Tim or anyone who knows. I think it was in Zion NP, What was the dirt road that is a must do? Snakes through a canyon etc. just planning my summer trip. Thanks to anyone who can answer.
Hi Bob! I think you mean the Mokee Dugway (and Valley of the Gods) and Zion is also worth a visit. Safe travels!
Thanks Tim
Ever had a run in with poisonous snake?
